Death Angel at Pulp Summer Slam XX: Judgement Day to be a Full-Circle Moment

For everyone that’s been part of the PULP SUMMER SLAM community throughout the Festival’s two-decade run, the return of Death Angel for PULP SUMMER SLAM XX: JUDGEMENT DAY feels like a full-circle moment. On May 16, 2020, at the Mall of Asia Arena, our blood brothers will be performing at the final installment of the festival, over a decade since they made history as the first international act to headline the Slam (PULP SUMMER SLAM VII: The Seven Deadly Sins in 2007). To have them by our side when we reach the end of the road, as they share the stage with the mighty Iron Maiden, truly makes for a beautiful and poetic ending.

“To be part of the final one after we’ve played it so many times it’s just an honor for us… we’re sad that it’s the final PULP SUMMER SLAM because we love that festival,” reflects lead guitarist Rob Cavestany in an exclusive interview with PULP Magazine. In between our first encounter in 2007 and what would be the final PULP SUMMER SLAM appearance for Death Angel, they have played the Festival three more times: PULP SUMMER SLAM XI: Ressurection, PULP SUMMER SLAM XIV: Children of the Damned, and most recently at PULP SUMMER SLAM XVII: Of Good and Evil. Truly, through the years, Death Angel have become an integral part of the history and legacy of Southeast Asia’s longest-running Metal festival.

Still, the final PULP SUMMER SLAM with Death Angel is more exciting than it is bittersweet. This far down the road, close to four decades since the band first emerged out of Daly City, California, more milestones deserve to be celebrated. The band has just released their ninth studio album Humanicide to high acclaim, and the title track has recently earned them their first GRAMMY nomination.

But perhaps the most important cause for celebration is the unbreakable connection that they’ve inevitably forged with their fans in the Philippines. Their integration into this unparalleled Philippine Metal tradition is something that is made even more meaningful by their Filipino descent. “Me, Ted, and half of Mark are Filipino. The original band had even two more Filipinos, so clearly, we’re known as this band of Filipinos. For us, playing in the Philippines, of course for our families, our parents, it’s like a big deal. And to us, it’s the Motherland, so that’s just amazing,” Cavestany tells PULP.

Death Angel are indeed making their way back to the Motherland to complete this beautiful circle and they will SEE YOU AT THE SLAM. Catch DEATH ANGEL along with IRON MAIDEN, BABYMETAL, DRAGONFORCE, and KING 810.
