Biyaheng Bente with Yeng: Twenty Years of Holding Hands, Strong Vocals, and a Journey That Still Feels Like Home

There are nights when time folds in on itself. When the lights hit the stage at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and a familiar voice cuts through the rain-soaked air outside, you don’t just hear songs, you remember who you were when you first sang them in your room, on the jeepney, or through heartbreak.

I still remember the day I lined up in front of the PBB House just to get tickets for the grand finale of Pinoy Dream Academy. I was rooting hard for her even then. Standing in that long line felt worth every minute because I knew I had to be there. I made it inside the Smart Araneta Coliseum and watched it all unfold live. When they crowned her Grand Star Dreamer and the stage lifted her as she sang “Salamat,” something shifted. That moment felt bigger than a reality show win. It felt like the start of something lasting.

Twenty years later, in the exact same venue, she ended Biyaheng Bente with that same song. Full circle. The girl who once stood elevated under those lights as a new champion closed her historic two-night anniversary run the same way, grateful, emotional, and still singing from the heart. Glad I stood in that line all those years ago. Glad I got to witness both beginnings and this beautiful continuation.

On Day 2 of Biyaheng Bente, Yeng Constantino didn’t just celebrate twenty years. She invited everyone to ride with her through every era, every scar, every quiet victory.

From the wide-eyed Grand Star Dreamer of Pinoy Dream Academy in 2006 to the Pop Rock Royalty who sold out two nights at the Big Dome, the journey has never felt manufactured. It always felt like hers, honest, a little rough around the edges, and full of heart.

She wrote “Hawak Kamay” at fourteen, in their house, when the world still felt small and the ache of a cousin leaving felt enormous. It wasn’t crafted for radio. It was a letter: Hawak-kamay, ‘di kita iiwan sa paglakbay. Dito sa mundong walang katiyakan. That same song later carried her through the Academy and into the hearts of a generation. On stage two decades later, it still lands with the same quiet power.

Before any of the fame, there was a father who believed hard enough to borrow money so his daughter could have her first guitar. That instrument wasn’t just wood and strings. It was permission. It was the first real step from dreaming about making music to actually doing it, turning the dream into something she could hold, play, and eventually share with the world. You could feel that origin story in every note she sang that night. The girl who once practiced in a house without all the advantages is the same woman still commanding the Big Dome with a voice that refuses to soften or fade.

And what a voice. After twenty years of live shows, studio sessions, and life itself, Yeng’s vocals remain startlingly strong, rich, controlled, and full of the same emotional honesty that made people fall in love with her in the first place. She moved through her entire catalogue with ease: the early hits that defined an era, the deeper cuts, the songs that soundtracked first loves and long nights.

The setlist felt less like a greatest-hits medley and more like opening a well-worn photo album. Nostalgic without being stuck in the past. Wide enough to hold every version of the people who showed up.

The surprises made the night even more special. Empoy turned “Chinito” into pure laughter and chaos in the best way. mrld, Angela Ken, Kyla, Sam Milby, the legend Ogie Alcasid, and JR Jimenez each stepped into the light and reminded everyone how far the ride has stretched. When Janine Bernine joined her, the two powerhouses traded lines and pushed each other, their voices locking and lifting in a friendly vocal fight that left the arena roaring. These weren’t just guest spots. They felt like friends who had been on the same long road, stopping by to say the journey was worth it.

Outside, the weather was unkind. Two sold-out shows, people still came, Yengsters who grew up with her music, newer fans discovering the catalogue for the first time, families who had passed the songs down. The Big Dome felt full in the way that matters most: not just bodies, but shared history.

At the end, the emotion finally broke through. Yeng stood there, flowers in hand from her husband, Yan, and the weight of twenty years landed all at once. She cried. She kissed him on stage. The arena watched a private moment made public, the quiet gratitude of a woman who never forgot how hard the early years were, how much her father sacrificed, how many hands had held hers along the way. She closed the historic two nights the only way that felt right: with “Salamat.”

Salamat for the songs written in small rooms.

Salamat for the borrowed money that bought a first guitar.

Salamat for the fans who showed up in the rain.

Salamat for a voice that still carries after two decades.

Salamat for the long biyahe that somehow still feels like it’s only just beginning.

On Day 2 of Biyaheng Bente, Yeng Constantino didn’t just look back. She held the hands of everyone who had ridden with her, and kept driving forward. Twenty years in, the music still feels like home.

Don’t miss Biyaheng Bente on September 20 at the SM Seaside Cebu Arena. Tickets are available at https://smtickets.com/events/view/18067
