“LOLO AND THE KID” HIGHLY ANTICIPATED FILIPINO FILM ON NETFLIX!

Netflix has just unveiled a trailer for its highly anticipated Filipino film “Lolo and the Kid,” featuring the talented Joel Torre and the rising star Euwenn Mikael Aleta from “Firefly.”

A video captures the duo swiftly leaving a residence, likely after committing a theft, as other footage reveals them in different attire during the night, carrying away numerous bundles of items. Beyond the usual routines, the characters seem to relish their moments of togetherness, whether it’s visiting an amusement park, spending time at the beach, or exploring thrift stores.

Joel’s character, as the grandfather, appears to be unable to fulfill this responsibility. Joel’s character immerses himself in a captivating tale, while a clip shows Kid encountering an unfortunate accident. This leads to a series of clips showcasing the duo enjoying each other’s company, highlighted by a heartwarming rendition of Kenny Rogers’ “Through the Years.”

The trailer revealed brief appearances from Markki Stroem, Meryll Soriano, Joem Bascon, Shaina Magdayao, and Alfred Vargas, along with a special participation from JK Labajo.

The two main characters share their feelings for each other on a bus ride, and the title card appears as they strike a pose with sunglasses in Manila, accompanied by the song “Through the Years” playing in the background. The film is helmed by Benedict Mique. “Lolo and the Kid” will be available to stream on Netflix worldwide starting August 7.

  • JADE drops debut solo single โ€œAngel of My Dreamsโ€

JADE drops debut solo single โ€œAngel of My Dreamsโ€

“What I’m going for is a relentless, huge pop punch to the face. I want people to be like ‘oh my god, I didn’t expect that’ โ€“ but then want to listen to it again.โ€

JADE, a.k.a. Jade Thirlwall of multi-platinum selling, BRIT Award-winning pop phenomenon Little Mix, releases her highly anticipated debut solo single, โ€œAngel of My Dreams.โ€

JADE co-wrote ‘Angel of My Dreams’ in LA alongside Steph Jones (Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso), Pablo Bowman (Calvin Harris’ Miracle), and producer Mike Sabath (RAYE). The track is a frenetically shapeshifting, gloriously OTT banger that explores her love/hate relationship with a pop industry she’s been at the heart of since 2011.

    Jade

โ€œI didn’t want to do a safe first single, that was important to me,โ€ JADE states. โ€œI’m setting the tone of who I am as an artist on my own. I want people to hear it and be like ‘what the fuck is that song?’. My worst nightmare is for someone to hear my song and go ‘that’s nice’.โ€

The lyrical themes are brought to life via an eye-popping video that takes the song’s playful storytelling and blows it up into big neon letters. Directed by Aube Perrie (Harry Styles, Megan Thee Stallion), and filmed over four days (โ€œthe budget was budgetingโ€ laughs JADE), it’s a visual feast, inspired by the Fifth Element, Showgirls and Black Swan, that stars various versions of Jade all scrapping for the spotlight.

โ€œThereโ€™s 11 looks in the video! The concept is sort of rags to riches It was emotional actually because for one bit Iโ€™m busking and walking past a Sainsburyโ€™s Local. When I was 16, I would stand outside my local Sainsburyโ€™s and sing Christmas songs.โ€

It’s been a long, carefully chosen path to get to ‘Angel of My Dreams’. When Little Mix announced their hiatus in 2022, JADE started to set her solo career in motion across multiple studio sessions with collaborators including MNEK, Cirkut, Lostboy, RAYE, Lauren Aquilina, and Dave Hamelin alongside Mike, Steph and Pablo. ‘Angel of My Dreams’ immediately jumped out as the lead single. Built around a cheeky, knowing sample of Sandie Shaw’s 1967 hit ‘Puppet on a String’, lyrically JADE wanted to reflect on her time in an industry that has brought her both unimaginable highs and deep lows.

โ€œIt’s about how obsessed I am with the industry โ€“ so there are lyrics like โ€œlove when you call me a starโ€ โ€“ but also there’s the dark side that comes with that. It’s not as glam as it seems.โ€ The sample, which JADE had wanted to use in a song for years, was chosen very specifically. โ€œIn the beginning of our career you do think you are this puppet, but at the same time it isn’t true โ€“ we wrote a lot of our songs, and we were behind a lot of what we put out there. I resented that as a statement. So it felt natural to take that and show that it can be true and untrue at the same time.โ€

The track is Jade delivering Big Pop Girl Energy. It is, as she says, doing the most; it’s OTT, it’s ridiculous and it’s gloriously WTF.

โ€œThis dawn of pop girls giving people everything is so exciting. It couldn’t be a better timing for my music. I’m so proud of it and I can say that with chest. The fans have waited long enough so now we just want to give it to them”.

The 2024 thrust of Watsons Playlist is all about supporting and empowering the P-Pop scene โ€“ bringing together P-Pop groups and fan communities for an epic celebration of music. โ€œThis 2024, we want to give the spotlight to the amazing P-Pop talents that we have โ€“ thriving in both the local scene and the global stage. It is our responsibility to support these talents as they banner Pinoy pride worldwide,โ€ said Jared De Guzman, Customer Director of Watsons Philippines and Head of Watsons Playlist. โ€œThrough Watsons Playlist, we also get to reward our Watsons Club members with a free concert when they can look good, do good, and feel great with Watsons.โ€

Ngayon, mayroon nang tulad ng Watsons Playlist na willing magbigay sa amin ng ganitong klaseng plataporma para ipamalas ang mga talents naming mga P-Pop artists.โ€

    SB19

    A feel-great night to remember

The Watsons Playlist artists enjoyed reconnecting with each other and their fans, including Aโ€™Tin, Magiliws, Anchors, Bullets, and Zaias. It was an evening for the P-Pop community. SB19โ€™s Stell said, โ€œWeโ€™re very excited na makasama kayo kasi yung mga ganitong klase bihira ito mangyari. Sa mga ganitong klaseng event lang tayo nabibigyan ng pagkakataong magkasama-samang lahat.โ€ Justin described it as a celebration and reunion.

HORI7ONโ€™s Marcus expressed the groupโ€™s honor at participating, โ€œThis is actually our first time to attend something like this. Definitely an honor to do it alongside other P-Pop acts. Weโ€™re very honored, and definitely, weโ€™ll do our best!โ€

  • SB19’s Justin defies expectations with Radkidz-produced track โ€œkaibiganโ€

SB19’s Justin defies expectations with Radkidz-produced track โ€œkaibiganโ€

Justin stars in the music video, along with Nicole Omillio of One More Chance stage adaptation and RJ Cruz of The Juans.

Justin delivers another track with an unfiltered creative pulse. The promising P-Pop star releases โ€œkaibigan,โ€ an anthemic track that finds the sweet spot most solo artists only dream of staying true to their roots while harnessing their fully realized potential.

The song channels the agony and frustration of expressing oneโ€™s true feelings to a friendโ€”a familiar premise that ends with an intriguing twist to its brand of storytelling.

โ€œTo be honest, thereโ€™s no actual or specific inspiration behind the song,โ€ Justin reveals. โ€œI wrote this tune from the perspective of an observer and wanderer: a person who enjoys movies with a coming-of-age slant.โ€

    Justin

    Radkidz collab

Layered with sonic complexities and refreshing builds, โ€œkaibiganโ€ simply defies expectations by giving Justin more room to experiment. Credit goes to Filipino production duo Radkidz (SB19โ€™s Pablo and his brother, Josue), who reconciled Justinโ€™s pop sensibilities with their envelope-pushing ideas. Both Pablo and Josue worked with Justin on his previously released solo tracks, โ€œsurrealโ€ and โ€œsunday morning.โ€

โ€œSimilar to surreal, I let them hear my demo in its ukulele version,โ€ Justin shares the production process behind his new track. “At first, it was more of a solemn and calm song, but as we navigated deeper through the collaboration and explored the material and its story, we came up with something that ripped out the emotional layers in the latter part.”

The charismatic member of SB19 specifically praised Radkidz for guiding him toward honing his sonic instincts while sticking to the brief.

โ€œThey added some interesting builds on the bridge and made me even scream towards the end. I personally donโ€™t see myself doing that, but thereโ€™s always a total payoff in accepting the challenge without giving in to your sense of inhibition. Iโ€™m actually thrilled with the final output.โ€

    About the music video

    Justin

SB19โ€™s Justin himself conceptualized the visual narrative that accompanies the track’s release. While he is responsible for the flow, the talented multi-hyphenate doesnโ€™t want to take all the credit for the MV, as he takes pride in the collaborative nature of filmmaking. He shares captainship with his team, particularly in coming up with the storyboard and the shot list.

โ€œFor the direction of the MV, other than the rough storyboard, we make sure the producer knows the story behind it and what feeling we want to convey. I even sent movies and not just music video pegs for them to really understand what we wanted to achieve,โ€ the 1Z Entertainment act adds.

The music video for โ€œkaibiganโ€ stars theater actress Nicole Omillio, who recently made headlines as Basha on the stage adaptation of the hit movie One More Chance, and RJ Cruz of alternative pop band The Juans.

The concept of the MV captures the complexities of human connection. As the team puts it, the newest single from justin is a reminder that some things are better left unsaid: โ€œkaibigan is an embrace for the unrequited.โ€

Justin admits, โ€œTo be honest, the music video is very easy to digest. And that’s what I want: for people to relate to it and feel the story of the music and the music video.โ€

Justinโ€™s โ€œkaibiganโ€ is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch the music video here.

Maki, Moira, Johnoy Danao, Ice, VXON, and more join this yearโ€™s PhilPop Himig Handog interpreters

PhilPop Himig Handog releases a 12-song compilation on streaming platforms worldwide! Maki, Moira, Johnoy Danao, Ice, VXON, Ferdinand Aragon, and more, join this yearโ€™s esteemed roster of interpreters.

PhilPop Himig Handog Songwriting Competition has released a compilation featuring the top 12 songs that made it to the final round.

The diverse selection of fully produced tunes was handpicked by the two music institutions (PhilPop and Himig Handog), who have made history by teaming up to find the next wave of global superstars and industry titans.

    PhilPop Himig Handog

According to Jonathan Manalo, the creative director of ABS-CBN Music, the final roster of tracks was determined through a rigorous adjudication process. The selection of songs involved direct consultation with the songwriters to determine the creative direction of their respective material and identify collaborators who aligned with their overall vision for the competition.

Manalo explains, โ€œWe then shortlisted possible interpreters for each track, and a lot of things had to be considered or fall into place. The next steps include choosing an artist that fits the genre and production schedule. We couldnโ€™t simply pick someone based on name value. They had to make sense in terms of style, the songwriterโ€™s vision, and overall commitment to the song, among others.โ€

Some of the artists who interpreted the songs include chart-topping R&B sensation Maki, award-winning singer-songwriters Moira and Johnoy Danao, folk-pop icon Ice Seguerra, recording pop artist Jolianne, Cebuano pride Ferdinand Aragon, P-Pop boyband VXON, and newcomers: KHIMO; Lyka Estrella, Annrain, and Geca Morales; Kurt Fick; Noah Alejandre; Shantel Cyline and Extrapolation; and FANA and Tiara Shaye.

Dinah Remolacio, PhilPop Executive Producer, also emphasized the importance of finding the right team of producers when developing the final version of the songs.

โ€œRespect for language was also taken into consideration as we wanted artists who naturally spoke the languages that are not necessarily Tagalog and not someone who would pretend to sing in a language that he or she wasnโ€™t familiar with. Overall, the production was a process that required a lot of components to fall into place, as well as a lot of patience and dedication. But weโ€™re excited for people to finally hear these songs.โ€

The shortlisted entries explore the different facets of OPM in a modern, globalized setting while retaining its unique storytelling style and individuality. Based on the final output alone, the pioneering batch of PhilPop Himig Handog Songwriting Competition stays true to its unwavering commitment to promoting OPM on a scale thatโ€™s never been done before: break new territories and captivate the international audience with music that is distinctly global yet very Pinoy.

As Manalo puts it, โ€œThe Top 12 have been very proactive and collaborative in their tracks. They really care about the final output of their songs, and thereโ€™s a drive to achieve their vision for their respective tracks. There was definitely a conscious effort, not just to make these songs globally competitive but also to make them a beautiful reflection of this generationโ€™s stories and context. I think what weโ€™ll hear for this batch is a representation of the current landscape of OPM thatโ€™s very diverse, young, and vibrant.โ€

Remolacio adds, โ€œI think you can expect a fresh batch of pop songs that have the ability to break borders globally and represent the diverse but interconnected culture of our country. We hope that through these tracks, our local fandoms will be proud of our music, and we hope that these songs will strengthen the local music scene and the music breaking borders movement.โ€

Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino celebrates 10 years with a series of shows across Metro Manila

Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino (LMP) marks its highly anticipated celebration this year with a series of music events to foster deeper awareness and appreciation for Pinoy music.

The week-long festivity, which takes place in various music venues and stages across Metro Manila from July 5 to 31, continues its commitment to promoting established and new homegrown music acts whose work has inspired the Filipino people or contributed to the advancement of the local economy and the arts.

    Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino

โ€œWhat makes LMP 2024 different from the previous celebrations is that it has a more โ€˜back-to-basicsโ€™ vibe and โ€˜keeping-it-simpleโ€™ feel,โ€ Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) Board member and Vice President for Special Projects Christian Bautista explains. โ€œThe focus and emphasis are on listening to and appreciating different artists sharing their music and stories in intimate settings. Our LMP this year is not focused on the spectacle but rather more on highlighting the artist and the song.โ€

This yearโ€™s LMP chronicles a decade of celebrating Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino by Proclamation No. 933, signed by late President Benigno Aquino III on December 19, 2014.

Returning on its tenth year to reintroduce its mandate to highlight Filipino singers and to showcase the richness and diversity of Filipino music, Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino aims to be more proactive in supporting Pinoy artists and ensuring that they are given a platform to present their work and their story to a global modern audience.

The commemoration of LMP is slated to take place in several areas with multiple dates and will feature more than 30 artists from OPMโ€™s roster and network of artists.

OPM Spotlight: LMP Night, which has championed some of the biggest and brightest local artists in recent years, will host performances and shows for the rest of the month at Kubo Bar in Kalayaan, Quezon City. Some of the headliners include Johnoy Danao, Sugarcane, jikamarie, Color It Red,, Mint Magic and many more from the OPM slate.

Other remote celebrations include OPM Spotlight: Rockwell LMP Series on July 24, 25, 26, and 28 at the Power Plant Mall in Makati City, and LMP24: PhilPop Night on July 31, 2024 at Kubo Bar. The latter puts a spotlight on select winners and participants from the prestigious annual songwriting competition, including Noah Alejandre, PhilPop 2020 Grand Champion; Davey Langit, PhilPop 2015 Top 3 Finalist and PhilPop 2013 Finalist; Kulas Basilonia, PhilPop 2020 Finalist; Hazel Faith, PhilPop North Luzon Boot Camp 2019 Fellow; and dwta, PhilPop 2021 DigiCamp Fellow. Ayala Land and Make It Makati will also be having a series of acoustic shows in partnership with OPM along with other activities related to the Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino celebration from July 21 to 28.

โ€œExpect beautiful music and heartfelt performances from the artists,โ€ Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) President Ogie Alcasid shares. โ€œWe hope that through this humble series of shows that weโ€™re doing, the Filipino audience will continue to love and support Filipino artists and Filipino music even after LMP.โ€

OPM Officer in Charge Gab Cabangon emphasizes that the goal of this yearโ€™s LMP has never changed. โ€œItโ€™s always been about the celebration and promotion of Filipino artists and Filipino music. That has always been our advocacy, to which we are fully committed as an organization. I guess what we could add to that is that this LMP celebration is also OPMโ€™s way to reintroduce itself to the general public and grow its community.โ€

The Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino was established under Proclamation No. 933, signed in 2014, with the initiative to celebrate Filipino music during the last week of July every year.

Since their debut in 2021, IVE has captured global attention, with two members gaining initial fame from a popular survival show. Their appeal has only grown, making them beloved worldwide.

IVE opened their much-anticipated concert with “I Am,” followed by “Royal” and “Blue Blood.” Each member then introduced themselves: Liz, Leeseo, Yujin, Wonyoung, Gaeul, and Rei. Gaeulโ€™s energetic floor checks hyped up the audience, setting the tone for the night.

Following the introductions, they performed “Blue Heart,” “Cherish,” and their debut hit “Eleven.” Another VCR transitioned to the next part of the show, where the girls, now in sparkly pink outfits, performed “Shine With Me,” a song dedicated to their journey with their DIVES.

Rei, Gaeul, and Wonyoung stayed on stage while the others took a break. Wonyoung shared that “Blue Heart” was written for those with broken hearts, and the trio chatted about Filipino food. Wonyoung mentioned fried bananas, Gaeul talked about fruits, and Rei enjoyed turon. They playfully named themselves the “Banana Girls.”

Yujin, Leeseo, and Liz returned, allowing the โ€˜Banana Girlsโ€™ to step out too. The new trio continued the food discussion, with Liz praising our halo-halo, Leeseo talking about ube ice cream, and Yujin mentioning chicken adobo. They also discussed their outfits, with Liz dubbing herself the “Manila Princess.”

They then performed “Lips,” “Mine,” and “Off the Record.” Leeseo and Yujin engaged with the crowd, doing the Small Girl challenge. Leeseo shared her favorite outfit of the night and commented on the passionate energy of the Manila DIVEs, felt from the very first moment they emerged on stage that night.

The solo and collaboration stages began with Gaeul performing “7 Rings,” Rei singing “Every Summertime,” and the duo performing “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls. Liz and Wonyoung delivered “Reality,” and Yujin and Leeseo performed “Woman Like Me.”

As the concert neared its end, a VCR played before the group returned for a series of hits. They changed into black outfits for “Hypnosis” and “Accendio.” Leeseo noted PH DIVEsโ€™ love for “Accendio,” and Gaeul and Wonyoung mentioned how well they fit the songโ€™s concept with their pigtail hairdos. Rei and Gaeul shared a playful moment from their earlier performance where they lovingly kissed each otherโ€™s cheeks.

The night continued with their title tracks “Love Dive,” “Kitsch,” “Baddie,” “After Like,” and โ€œHEYAโ€, which drew loud cheers. During the fan interaction part where each fan gets the chance to be featured on the LED screen, one little lucky DIVE was captured dancing energetically to “After Like” on the LED screen. The encore began with “OTT,” and they took a group picture with a banner prepared by their PH DIVEs.

In their final ment, Rei expressed excitement about returning to Manila, Gaeul connected with fans who attended their last concert, and Wonyoung promised a swift return. Yujin noted the loud cheers, Leeseo expressed happiness at meeting the fans again, and Liz shared her high expectations for the night, which were met twice as much.

The encore song “All Night” was repeated multiple times, driven by the boundless energy of PH DIVES, perfectly ending the night with this energetic song.

  • Manila Falls for Onew’s Irresistible Charms

Manila Falls for Onew’s Irresistible Charms

Effortlessly charming and endlessly funny, K-Pop star Onew had Jjingus crying and laughing at his GUESS! fanmeet on July 4. The New Frontier Theater sparkled in the famously bright and beautiful pearl aqua colors of the SHINee fandom for the group leaderโ€™s first solo world tour since debuting in 2008.

Onew kicked off the evening with “Circle,” the title track from his album of the same name. Performances were few and far between, with Zairo on guitars as the sole accompaniment. He also performed “Sign” and concluded the night with an unreleased track titled “All Day.”

True to its name, the GUESS fanmeet was full of surprises. Segments ranged from sharing TMI of his recent photos and his favorite tunes (Harry Styles’ “As It Was” and SHINeeโ€™s “Love Like Oxygen,” both of which he sang snippets of), to drawing the Banaue Rice Terraces and Chocolate Hills, discussing style choices, playing party games, taking on a dance challenge, and sharing personal fun facts.

Onewโ€™s natural humor and playful banter kept the audience entertained throughout the night. At one point, he humorously referred to the green Chocolate Hills as matcha chocolate. When asked to share a message for his Filipino fans, he wittily responded, โ€œI always say be happy, but youโ€™re already happy, so letโ€™s consider this sectionโ€ฆ nothing.โ€ His contagious enthusiasm was evident from the moment he walked onstage, as he giddily jumped and matched the host’s energy. He even fell to his knees in laughter when asked to say, โ€œPogi Akoโ€ (I am handsome).

A notable highlight of the evening was the hi-bye session, typically reserved for those with the priciest tickets, which was extended to all attendees regardless of ticket tier. Everyone had a quick second to see Onewโ€™s beautiful eye smile up close.

Onew, along with SHINee, has been in the industry for 15 years, a major feat accompanied by adversities. He recently returned from a year-long health hiatus in April 2024, simultaneously announcing his separation from his long-time label. This fanmeet marked his return to Manila since his last visit in 2017 with SHINee for the One K Global Peace Concert. For Jjingus, his return, no matter how long it takes, is always worth the wait. As their banners proudly declare, โ€œWeโ€™re Not Going Anywhere.โ€
