Filipino artists Maki, Munimuni, crwn, bird. and Muri to join AXEAN Festival 2024 in Bali, Indonesia

The inaugural event unveils its initial round of programming, which includes the addition of a songwriting camp.

After mounting successful in-person events in Singapore for two consecutive years (2022-2023), AXEAN announces its return to a new tropical destination a thousand miles away from its former homebase.

Filipino artists such as chart-topping R&B artist Maki, indie-folk collective Munimuni, electronic producer crwn, dream-pop band bird. and soul-jazz chanteuse Muri lead the first wave of acts performing at the international music festival which will take place in Bali, Indonesia, from September 28-29, 2024.
The first intra-regional music showcase event in Southeast Asia gears up for another meaningful convergence at the Jimbaran Hub, located on the southern tip of the island, and surrounded by breathtaking greenery and sunset views.

    First time in Bali

“It has always been our vision to make AXEAN a regional traveling festival, changing host countries every year, or even having multiple smaller editions in different countries,” AXEAN Festival co-founder and team leader Piyapong Muenprasertdee reveals. “The reasoning stemmed from us seeing that most Southeast Asian music markets are either very domestic or receptive towards only Western or K-pop artists when it comes to international artists. Thus, if we could help domestic artists cross borders within the region, there could be more opportunities for them to grow an international fanbase. After 2 years in Singapore, we felt it was the right time to try a new place, and Bali is a tropical paradise with a growing music scene, we think it is the perfect location for artists, delegates, and music lovers alike.”

The festival activities will kick off with a music industry mixer and a private music showcase of Balinese talents on the day before the festival. It will be followed by a two-day music conference with networking activities in the morning and a music showcase festival featuring more than 50 music acts from Southeast Asia and beyond.

    First wave of lineup

This year’s edition of AXEAN Festival takes pride in its diverse but strategically curated lineup from different parts of Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

The lineup includes: At Adau (MY), Batavia Collective (ID), bird. (PH), Common People Like You (TH), COTERIE (AU), crwn (PH), Dialog Dini Hari (ID), Funkindustry (FR), Gabe Watkins (TH), Grrrl Gang (ID), HARIKUYAMAKU (JP), I’mdifficult(TW),Josh Makazo (SG), lightcraft (ID), Linying (SG), LUSS (TH), M-Fatt (KH), Maki (PH), Milledenials (ID), mindfreakkk (TH), Munimuni (PH), Muri (PH), Norith & YuuHai (KH), Puman (CN), Rangga Jones(SG), RuthKo(KH),San & The Workshop (SG), Skandal (ID), The Dinosaur’s Skin (TW), The Hertz (HK), Tuimi (VN), Uudee’s Swashbuckling Dandies (MN), Vanthan (KH), VVAS (TH).

    International songwriting camp

The acclaimed international showcase festival will wrap up with a private songwriting camp, the newest addition to its diverse and extensive range of programming. The initiative aims to foster a spirit of creativity and inclusivity in a globalized setting while nurturing cross-cultural collaboration amongst the finest and most promising songwriters, producers, and artists in the ASEAN region and also from other regions of the world.

AXEAN Festival co-founder and co-director David Siow advocates for a more DIY approach to the songwriting camp, backed by its purpose of empowering and connecting a community of music creatives from all around the world while ensuring equitable outcomes and opportunities from the series of collaborative sessions.

“For us, it’s all about enabling artists and furthering their careers; for Bali, it just made sense to do a camp and create good vibes, memories, and tracks for all involved,” Siow explains.

Muenprasertdee, the festival’s co-director, also emphasized the importance of the songwriting camp, not just in breaking barriers literally and metaphorically, but also in producing strategic collaborations that have proven to help artists enter new markets by sharing fanbases. He cited Flower.far from Thailand with Fern. from the Philippines; and Vũ Thanh Vân from Vietnam with H 3 F from Thailand as some of the recent success stories.

“We hope a songwriting camp will help create an environment to foster more artistic collaborations and cross-border fanbases. Apart from some of this year’s showcasing artists, we have also invited some alumni, guest songwriters, and producers to make it more fun and productive! Be on the lookout for new music coming out from our camp!”

  • Kim Ji Won Mesmerizes Fans at Her Spectacular “Be My One” Fan Meet in the Philippines

Kim Ji Won Mesmerizes Fans at Her Spectacular “Be My One” Fan Meet in the Philippines

A sold-out fan meeting for Queen Kim Ji Won!

Kim Ji Won, the celebrated actress known for her role in the record-breaking K-drama Queen of Tears, made a remarkable debut in the Philippines with her very first fan meeting. On August 3, 2024, the New Frontier Theater buzzed excitedly as Be My One 1st Asia Fanmeeting Tour, presented by PULP Live World, unfolded into an extraordinary event. Unlike the usual one-hour fan meetings, Kim Ji Won’s showcase extended to over two hours, delivering an experience that fully captivates and engages fans.

The event was a grand success, with Filipino fans showing unwavering support during her one-night sold-out show. The warm reception included creative fan projects and heartfelt local recommendations, such as cheese ube ice cream and chicken inasal, which delighted the actress and are likely to draw her back to the Philippines!

Before this memorable fan meeting, Kim Ji Won also participated in an exclusive press conference, providing valuable insights and sharing her experiences with the Filipino media and audience.

    Intimate and Personal Press Conference

The actress shared some of her hobbies and insights about her being an actress for more than a decade. Kim Ji Won was asked about her preparation process for every new series, particularly noting her exceptional chemistry with fellow actors. She explained that her approach is quite straightforward. Kim Ji Won revealed that she thoroughly studies her scripts and engages in regular communication with directors to understand their vision for the drama. She also expressed gratitude for her supportive staff, efficient production team, and excellent co-stars, which she believes contribute significantly to her successful performances.

While Ji Won is favored a lot in romantic comedies, the actress expressed that if given the opportunity, she wants to try a different drama!

“Of course, romantic comedy is also my favorite, but if I could be given a chance to pick another genre, something very different like a thriller, maybe. I believe that fans will be more interested to see a different role in a different genre.”

As the actress is very well-known for delivering powerful scenes, she also talked about how she’s able to portray them on-screen, noting with thanks that she’s blessed to have good staff, good directors, and great co-actors, who talk her through the scenes and go through it with her before they shoot them, and the transition from script to on-screen is smooth because of the guidance she gets. So even though she feels pressured whenever she takes on a new drama, she uses this as a positive verve and thinks of it as a drive to work harder and provide K-drama fans with the best version of her.

When asked on who’s her favorite role to play? Her breakthrough role, of course, is the powerful Rachel Yoo from The Heirs! She expressed that it was the first time she portrayed a very strong character, and enjoyed the little antagonist role.

On to her hobbies or activities, she mentioned that while it’s hard to look for something that will keep her busy outside of the entertainment business, she mentioned that she’s currently into building LEGOs and spends time working on them! She’s also been watching romantic comedies as well, pinning “Silver Lining Playbook” as the basis of what she’s been interested in watching generally. She also adds NewJeans and aespa to her current listening playlist at right now, which we know are trending just like her!

And relating to doing something other than acting, she also talked about what job would she have preferred if she wasn’t an actress, while originally, she always said she wanted to be a kindergarten teacher, she realized that in our technologically advanced era, being an “EMOTICON CREATOR” is the route she wanted to take in. “I think you should just be good at drawing to become one,” and since we don’t have Emoticon Creators here in the Philippines, she said she’d be the first one here! Perhaps the actress has not shown all her talents yet and we may get to see her drawings too.

One of the goals of Kim Ji Won right now is to complete her Asian fan tour successfully, and wishes to make more memories with her “pen pals”, all over Asia, in the hopes that she can return their enthusiastic support. She’s very thrilled and excited to meet them all and tell them to not get sick.

Your one and only, Kim Ji Won

Kim Ji Won, renowned for her role in Queen of Tears, opened her fan meeting in the Philippines with a captivating performance of “Stupid Cupid,” the Princess Diary version. The event saw Kim Ji Won deeply moved by the enthusiastic support from her fans, which exceeded her expectations.

During the fan meeting, Kim Ji Won participated in a segment called ‘Be My Actor Playlist,’ where she discussed her top three K-drama roles. She expressed excitement about Descendants of the Sun and its international remakes, noting how different versions highlight various cultures. She also reflected on her role in My Liberation Notes, wishing for the strength of her character to be portrayed in real life. The reception for Queen of Tears was exceptional, as it continues to be her most popular K-drama to date, and that topped Netflix charts worldwide. Kim Ji Won admired the resilience of her character, who fought hard and never gave up.

Acknowledging her success in romantic comedies, Kim Ji Won was honored with the title “Queen of Romantic Comedy,” a recognition that both overwhelmed and motivated her. She expressed her gratitude to her fans, stating that their support empowers her to be a better actress. She identified the song “We Fight Ourselves” by Epik High featuring Younha as closely related to her character in Queen of Tears, reflecting her character’s emotional transformation.

In the segment ‘Be My Actor Story,’ Kim Ji Won and fans explored her character’s styles across her roles. This interactive segment resembled a World Cup-style competition, with her character from Queen of Tears, Hong Hae-in, emerging as the favorite for her wardrobe choices. Kim Ji Won also discussed her style, which, right now influenced by the warm South Korean weather, favoring short sleeves, cardigans, and comfortable footwear.

Another segment delved into her interests. Kim Ji Won revealed her favorite movie is UP and shared her top three desires: to travel (with the Philippines on her itinerary), take a pottery class (as she collects teacups), and visit an amusement park (where she is more interested in the food than extreme rides). She also shared a humorous tidbit about getting her dress soaked backstage due to her excitement, which required a quick blow-dry before meeting her fans.

But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”

  • Munimuni’s Alegorya: A Worthwhile Musical Experience

Munimuni’s Alegorya: A Worthwhile Musical Experience

Indie-folk band Munimuni held their concert titled Alegorya at the UP Theater on July 20, in celebration of their latest album of the same title.

It is the third major concert of their career, and their biggest one yet. Presented by Gabi Na Naman Productions, the show drew a crowd of more than a thousand people composed of Komunidad (their fanbase name) and music enthusiasts.

    Munimuni

Composed of Adj Jiao (guitars/vocals), John Owen Castro (flute/vocals), Jolo Ferrer (bass), Josh Tumaliuan (drums), Ben Ayes (guitars), Munimuni went far and beyond normal concert expectations to make sure that the three-hour show would be a worthwhile musical experience.

Even before the show started, the stage effects were on point. Entering the theater felt like entering a cave. In the background of the stage, stacks of blocks were illuminated by light radiating from water, as the sound of water droplets echoed mellifluously.

When Munimuni first appeared on stage, the five members played in their usual band set-up, starting with “Ako Lang Ba?”, a song that opened the descent to the preeminent emotion of the first part of their setlist: sadness. This was followed by tracks from their latest album Alegorya such as “Kapayapaan”, “Isang Araw ang Lumipas”, “Alat” and “Sikat ng Araw”. Adj asked the crowd in jest if they could still take more sadness after this, a comment which made the crowd laugh. The mood lightened up a few shades afterward when they played “Matimtiman”, “Kalsada”, “Dito Muna Tayo” and “Maligaya”.

The show went on a short break as the stage set-up was adjusted to accommodate their unplugged set, as well as their backing chamber orchestra. The members shared that this was the kind of set-up they were accustomed to when they were starting out since they did not have a drum kit at the time. Decked in all-white fits, Munimuni sat side-by-side in front of the stage and proceeded to play “Tanikala”. Joining them after were their special guests: Sofia Abrogar in “Pagsibol”, Clara Benin in “Tahanan” and Keiko Necesario in “Oras”. Each singer’s distinctive vocal color matched by the string arrangement made for some goosebump-inducing moments in the concert.

Their setlist also gave a spotlight to their heavier, angrier tracks such as “Respeto”, “Alegorya”, “Bukas Makalawa”, which culminated into the cathartic blend of the somber “Tiwala” and the discordant “Alpas”.

Veteran singer-songwriter Barbie Almalbis later joined Munimuni on stage to perform “Tupa”, a collaboration song off their latest album. Before their performance together, Owen got a bit emotional while taking the time to thank the crowd. “Itong buong concert na ‘to, it is a step of faith for us. Di namin ma-imagine na more than 1,000 people are here to celebrate our music,” he said with a shaky voice. Barbie cheered on the band, saying that she and her husband are big fans of the band.

“Maraming salamat sa pagpunta,sa pagcelebrate kahit di ito parang normal celebration,” Adj also told the crowd. “Di lang siya celebration ng album, pero ng pagiging tao, ‘yung halaga ng buhay ng tao.” Adj further explained that their purpose as a band is to inspire hope in people – the kind that gives people a reason to keep living. “Ang pag-asa, nandiyan siya, isang magandang salita, isang magandang konsepto. Ebidensiya siya na lumalaban ka, na may hangad ka para mabuhay,” he said.

By all means, Munimuni’s Alegorya went beyond the concept of a usual album launch/concert. The UP Theater was the perfect venue for it as it was primarily the kind of show that demanded the audience to be still, to listen, and to take in every detail. From the get-go, it was evident that the band put every ounce of thought into giving the concert a strong visceral impact, a feat they achieved by fine-tuning the acoustics, synching the lighting to each track, coordinating with a chamber orchestra, and more.

The acoustics of the venue sounded so crisp and clean, making the string arrangement all the more stirring. The lighting direction was orchestrated so meticulously, that it felt like they were dancing to the melodies of each song. The setlist was arranged as if it follows a narrative that gradually unravels – one that begins with sadness, continues in hope, and ends in love/togetherness. The three hours were undoubtedly long, but it was a captivating journey, and every minute of it was valuable.

For the finale, Komunidad raised their orange lights as they sang along to the Munimuni anthem “Marilag”, a loud, magical moment in a show that was marked with solemnity. The band was about to leave the stage, but the audience called for an encore. The jovial “Bukang-Liwayway” officially closed the evening.

  • The Itchyworms Sells Out Beer and Pag-Ibig during Launch

The Itchyworms Sells Out Beer and Pag-Ibig during Launch

We got beer, loaded with a lot of music during The Itchyworms’ Beer O Pag-Ibig Grand Launch at the 123 Block on the evening of July 13.

Presented by Gabi Na Naman Productions, the event turned out to be a success as all the beer packs, composed of two spectacular flavors: Beer and Pag-Ibig sold out a few hours before The Itchyworms started the show.

Starting the party were the newcomers The Revisors, whose two members are Jazz Nicolas’ sons. The youngsters played a catchy mix of pop-rock reminiscent of the ‘90s. This was followed by Blaster and the Celestial Klowns who dished out a psychedelic blend of disco rock. Indie rock veteran Ciudad also entertained the crowd with favorites like “Get You Closer” and “My Emptiness”

When Ebe Dancel took the stage, he congratulated The Itchyworms for having their craft beer line. He shared that when Sugarfree was starting, they would often be in the same lineup in bar gigs. Whatever spare money they had, they used it to buy beer after gigs. Ebe played “Prom”, “Bawat Daan” and “Mariposa”.

The stars of the evening, The Itchyworms, showcased their extensively diverse musicality. Jugs Jugueta, Jazz Nicolas, Kelvin Yu, Mikey Amistoso, and Weckl Mercado were on top of their game as they played track after track, including newer material like “The Silence” and “Panic in My Mind”, a cover of The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and B-sides like “Pariwara” and “One Ball”.

The Itchyworms thanked the audience for supporting their beer venture and for coming to the show. “Daig pa namin San Miguel, nagsold out yung beer namin,” Jugs joked. They also said that they will be producing another batch soon.

Of course, the audience went wild when it was time for the all-time Itchyworms faves “Love Team”, “Buwan”, “Gusto Ko Lamang sa Buhay”, “Akin Ka na Lang” and the much celebrated “Beer”. The band was supposed to cap off the night after that, but they gave in to the crowd’s jeers for another song which turned out to be the bittersweet “Di Na Muli”.
