We Are Imaginary finds clarity in restraint on self-titled third album

The acclaimed Filipino band embraces a renewed sense of artistic ease and confidence on their dreamy, noisy, but melodic indie rock release.

Filipino indie rock band We Are Imaginary has released their self-titled third album on all streaming and other digital music platforms worldwide via indie label floppydisks.

Produced by Joey Santos of Love One Another and Ahmad Tanji, the album delves into themes of identity, emotional reckoning, and acceptance. Sonically, it’s a dreamy guitar-rock record infused with shoegaze and noise-pop textures: drifting through warm, fuzzy soundscapes before pulling listeners back into tension, doom, and angst.

We Are Imaginary was also recorded by Angee Rozul and Santos at Love One Another studio, and was mixed by the latter and mastered by Adam Haggar at Mount Olympia Mastering.

Frontman Ahmad Tanji describes the record as an internal monologue: one that begins in uncertainty and gradually opens into moments of understanding and calm. Rather than chasing resolution, the 9-track release embraces the idea that not all experiences require closure.

“This collection also feels more cohesive,” Tanji reveals. “There’s a sense of comfort and confidence when we started laying down our parts. I guess that comes with growing with the band for 17 years and trusting the people you work with.”

On their self-titled record, the band allows itself to inhabit extremes: hushed passages give way to surging intensity, and vulnerability coexists with restraint. The result is a cohesive and patient record, unburdened by the need to prove anything. “It felt unforced,” Tanji shares, crediting the band’s 17 years together for the sense of comfort and trust that shaped the sessions.

Designed to be experienced as a complete work, We Are Imaginary rewards attentive listening. Its sequencing, subtle shifts, and quiet moments form a gradual arc: one best heard in a single sitting, on vinyl or through good speakers or headphones.

Tanji explains it best: “Angee Rozul worked with our taste and style perfectly as our recording engineer, letting us lean towards a more ‘90s sound this time around, while Joey (Santos) gave each song a massive and dynamic mix. We would exchange several drafts per song, stripping them to their most essential, capturing what arrangement works with the story.”

With this release, We Are Imaginary presents an honest distillation of who they are now: assured, reflective, and fully at ease with the space they occupy.

The band is also set to release the album on vinyl via Eikon Records sometime in the first quarter of the year. Pre-order here.

    About We Are Imaginary

We Are Imaginary is a Manila-based indie rock band that has been crafting emotionally resonant, guitar-driven anthems since 2008. Drawing comparisons to The Smashing Pumpkins with a lyrical sensibility reminiscent of Ben Gibbard, the band has carved out a distinct niche in the Philippine independent music scene.

Once known as Your Imaginary Friends, the band released two critically acclaimed EPs under their old name before rebranding due to trademark issues. Undeterred, they signed with respected local label Wide Eyed Records, releasing their debut full-length album, Death to Romanticism, in 2016 to widespread acclaim.

In 2018, to mark their 10th year, the band released “Dekada”, their first single in Filipino, showcasing their evolving sound and versatility. Following a pandemic-induced hiatus, they returned in 2023 with Swan Songs for Drifters, their fourth album, under emerging label Floppydisks—a record that reaffirmed their relevance and creativity in a fast changing musical landscape.

Internationally, We Are Imaginary has represented the Philippines at major regional events, including the Grass Tone Sound Festival (Thailand, 2015), Rocking the Region (Singapore, 2017), Archipelago Festival (Indonesia, 2017), and just recently, No Headliner 4 (Vietnam, 2025).

They have also opened for notable international acts such as Club 8, Moonpools & Caterpillars, and Beach Fossils. Currently composed of brothers Khalid (guitars) and Ahmad Tanji (vocals, guitars) and JJ Rodriguez (drums), the band is all set to release their fifth studio album this January 2026.

HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS IS FINALLY COMING TO MANILA FOR IF ONLY YOU WERE LONELY 20TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR

Filipino fans of emo and alternative rock are in for a historic night as American band HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS finally brings their If Only You Were Lonely 20th Anniversary Tour to Manila. The band will perform the iconic album live in its entirety on May 6, 2026, at the Skydome, SM North EDSA, marking their first-ever concert in the Philippines.

    Hawthorne Heights

The Manila stop is part of a limited anniversary tour celebrating one of the most influential emo records of the mid-2000s. If Only You Were Lonely, released in 2006, became a cultural touchstone for a generation navigating themes of heartbreak, vulnerability, and emotional catharsis. The album earned RIAA Gold certification and produced enduring tracks such as “Saying Sorry” and “Pens and Needles,” songs that continue to resonate with fans nearly two decades later. Unlike a standard tour setlist, the anniversary show is designed as a front-to-back performance of the album, allowing audiences to experience the record’s narrative arc as a complete live work. Their live performance has been praised internationally for its intimate yet explosive energy, transforming each night into a shared emotional experience between the band and the crowd.

Over the years, the band has maintained a strong global following and continues to connect with fans through consistent international touring and high-impact live performances. The current touring lineup includes JT Woodruff (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Matt Ridenour (bass and backing vocals), and Mark McMillon (lead guitar).

For Filipino fans, the Manila concert represents more than just a tour stop; it is a long-awaited moment of recognition for a fanbase that has supported the band for years through streaming, social media, and word-of-mouth. The show also underscores the Philippines’ growing reputation as a key destination for major alternative and rock tours in Southeast Asia.

MidSummer Shares a Moment of Quiet Longing in New Indie Pop Track “Kailan Kaya”

Rising OPM indie band MidSummer under KDR Music House continues to carve its place in the local music scene with the release of their emotionally resonant track “Kailan Kaya” come this Friday Jan. 9, 2026. Hailing from the province of Davao Oriental, the five-piece band is united by a deep passion for music and a genuine desire to connect with listeners through honest storytelling and heartfelt performances.

From humble beginnings, MidSummer’s youthful energy and sincerity have steadily earned them attention, positioning them as one of the promising acts to watch in today’s evolving OPM landscape. Their music reflects the emotions of a new generation—raw, reflective, and deeply relatable.

“Kailan Kaya” is an introspective OPM indie pop song that captures the quiet ache of waiting for a love that has yet to fully arrive. In support of the release, MidSummer has embarked on a series of promotional appearances to connect with audiences both live and on-air. The band kicked off their promo run on January 4 at KDRAC At Night held at KDR Adventure Camp in Orani, Bataan, sharing the stage with Daryl Ong, Adelene Rabulan, and comedienne Orca.

On January 5, MidSummer took part in the taping of All Radio 103.5’s “All Pinoy,” which is set to air and stream on January 15. The following day, January 6, the band made the rounds with appearances on Good Morning Kuya, Morning Wish of Wish 107.5, and an IWantASAP taping scheduled to be streamed on January 18.

During their Manila promotions, the band expressed their heartfelt gratitude to their record label, KDR Music House, for the unwavering support, dedication, and tireless efforts in promoting MidSummer and their music. The group shared that the guidance and care they received while in Manila played a vital role in making their promotional activities meaningful and successful.

  • Humor on point! Lee Dong Wook is at HOME in Manila!

Humor on point! Lee Dong Wook is at HOME in Manila!

Going to Lee Dong Wook’s “My Sweet Home” fan meeting on December 20, 2025, at The Theatre at Solaire was like magic. It was an early Christmas present that lived up to all the hype!

From the moment the lights dimmed, Lee Dong Wook’s charismatic presence filled the venue with warmth and joy. Known for his iconic roles as the stoic Grim Reaper in Goblin and the fierce gumiho in Tale of the Nine Tailed, Wookie did not shy away and showed his playful, affectionate side and was genuinely touched by the love from Filipino fans.

The event was perfectly themed around “home,” which made it feel like a warm family gathering. The visuals were stunning, the sound was great, and there were festive holiday touches that made it feel like a family gathering.

WookDong talked about his career and shared personal stories from his series and behind-the-scenes of his work. He also talked about how he got from his early dramas to his most recent projects. He joked, “What, Pogi?” when he heard his new nicknames, “POGI” and “Mahal.” He said, “Hindi niyo lang naman sinasabi sakin yan; pati sa ibang artista sinasabi niyo yan,” which drew a loud scream from the crowd.

The games’ part was so funny. He was cool and competitive, but he failed every mission, which made it even funnier. He was charming, his quick wit was spot-on, and everything about him was lovable. Seeing him talk to fans during the Q&A, answer questions, and take requests made him seem more like an old friend than a distant star.

This queen showed up in a full-on Lee Dong Wook character photo dress and got a hug from Oppa himself! Core memory unlocked!

Lee Dong Wook kept saying that Manila feels like a second home to him, and Filipino Noehee’s energy was electric. He was truly humble when he thanked his Filipino fans. “Since My Girl 20 years ago, the love you gave me has left a big space in my heart, and whenever I hear the Philippines, you’re what I remember most.”

Whether you’re a Wookie fan or not, this fan meeting was an unforgettable night of laughter, “Sana ol Moments,” screams, and pure bliss. The sweetest gift of all this Christmas! It is intimate, heartfelt, and worth every peso—we can’t wait for him to come back! All thanks to Solaire for making this happen!
