2023 ASIA ARTIST AWARDS: A Historic First in the Philippines

Celebrating Asian excellence, the AAA makes its Philippine debut with a star-studded lineup!

On December 14, 2023, the Philippine Arena is set to host a landmark event in the world of Asian entertainment: the 8th edition of the Asia Artist Awards (AAA). This year’s event is particularly special as it marks the first time the AAA will be held in the Philippines, a testament to the country’s vibrant love for K-culture and its emerging significance in the global entertainment landscape.

    2023 Asia Artist Awards

The 2023 Asia Artist Awards, known for honoring and celebrating the achievements of talented artists across the Asian entertainment industry, has garnered immense excitement and anticipation from fans across the globe.

The event will feature performances and appearances from various artists, including NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, SEVENTEEN’s BSS, ZEROBASEONE, BOYNEXTDOOR, Stray Kids, ITZY, THE BOYZ, NMIXX, Kwon Eunbi, Kep1er, SB19, Dreamcatcher, KARD, AKMU, &TEAM, Lee Youngji, STAYC, Ash Island, and many more! Additionally, renowned K-drama actors like Ahn Hyo-seop, Kim Seon-ho, Kim Se-jeong, and Moon Ga-young will also be in attendance, adding to the event’s allure.

Organized by STAR NEWS, TONZ ENTERTAINMENT, and PULP Live World, the Asia Artist Awards is more than an awards ceremony. Often compared to the Oscars and Grammys of Asia, it’s a celebration of Asian talent and creativity, bringing together artists, producers, directors, and celebrities from across the continent. Since its inception in 2016—a development spearheaded by the South Korean business newspaper Money Today, along with global media giants MTN and StarNews, the AAA has consistently celebrated the best the region has to offer in terms of film, music, television, and digital content.

Over the years, the AAA has recognized the talents of K-pop legends BTS and EXO, as well as trot singer Lim Young-woong, and actors Lee Jung-jae and Lee Seung-gi. Hallyu personalities Park Bo-gum and Im Yoon-ah were among the first recipients of the prestigious Asia Star Award. Since then, the AAA has also feted new blood, such as aespa and IVE. With its rich history of honoring established icons and spotlighting emerging talents, the AAA offers a panoramic view of Asia’s dynamic showbiz scene.

And now, the biggest awards ceremony that recognizes the talent in both the film and music industry is going to take place in the Philippine Arena.

  • Sony Music Entertainment Philippines and Shoti spread holiday cheer with this year’s ‘Season of Giving’ campaign

Sony Music Entertainment Philippines and Shoti spread holiday cheer with this year’s ‘Season of Giving’ campaign

The initiative is part of a campaign to engage the country in a fight to alleviate food insecurity and malnutrition.

Sony Music Entertainment Philippines (SMEP) continues to give back to disadvantaged communities through food aid and relief.

This comes as part of Sony Music Group’s global ‘Season of Giving’ campaign, where the company and its artists are paying it forward to the countries in which the international music label operates. Across the world, SMG is supporting global organizations dedicated to providing aid for those facing food insecurity, homelessness and refugee support, as well as music industry relief and educational programs for communities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, the international music label has partnered with Reach Out and Feed Philippines for a feeding program that provides assistance and relief to households in highly urbanized areas such as Barangay Damayang Lagi in Quezon City. Sony Music has been partners with them since last year, where they provided food aid, along with pop-rock band, NOBITA, to local communities impacted by the pandemic.

As reported by Reach Out and Feed Philippines, the community-wide initiative has supported more than 100,000 individuals to date.

Reach Out and Feed Philippines extended their deepest gratitude to Sony Music for providing valuable support to the feeding outreach. “Their support is not just a contribution; it’s a lifeline to those in need. Together, we’re making a tangible difference, one meal at a time,” Dawn Cabigon, Founder and Chairperson of Reach Out and Feed Philippines said.

The team, which was headed by Sony Music, distributed healthy meals to indigent families. Shoti, one of the label’s recording stars, volunteered and serenaded the beneficiaries with his music, which includes a performance of the viral smash “LDR,” the new single “waiting 4 u (delulu),” and a rendition of the holiday classic “Jingle Bell Rock.”

“I’ve received a lot of blessings this year,” said the teen pop singer-songwriter. “And the least thing that I can do is to pay it forward in my own little way. I’m grateful to my Sony Music family and Brgy. Damayang Lagi for the opportunity to bring joy and inspiration to these families. I’m honored to have used my platform in enacting impactful changes within the community, and I hope to be of service to more people in the future.”

Shoti also encouraged the children and parents to join him on the LDR TikTok dance trend, which drew cheers and laughter among the participants.

He’s one of the artists that supports Sony Music Entertainment’s countless philanthropic activities every year, with the utmost goal of creating valuable and positive social impact for a better future.

Roslyn Pineda, General Manager, Philippines, Sony Music Entertainment, expressed her gratitude to Shoti for his time and generosity to the cause. “I am incredibly proud of our young artist Shoti, who, at just 16 years old, displayed immense dedication and commitment by flying all the way from Cebu to Manila to participate in the feeding program organized by Reach Out and Feed Philippines. Shoti’s willingness to go the extra mile to make a difference is truly inspiring.”

Season of Giving, a global initiative of Sony Music Group, runs throughout the holiday season in collaboration with charity partners across Africa, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Continental Europe, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Facilitating volunteer events in each region where they have an office presence, Sony Music Group through Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, showed an unwavering commitment to help secure the resources needed to serve the most vulnerable individuals and families in different parts of the world.

Pineda adds, “Sony Music Philippines is committed to continuing our Season of Giving initiatives and partnering with organizations like Reach Out and Feed Philippines to create a lasting change. Together with our artists, we will continue to use our platform to uplift and empower communities.”

This campaign also represents the company’s ongoing commitment to forge humanitarian partnerships and support communities that need it most, inside and outside the music industry.

  • Choi Woo Shik in Manila: A Promise Fulfilled

Choi Woo Shik in Manila: A Promise Fulfilled

Choi Woo Shik returned to the Philippines for his first-ever fan meeting titled Pinky Promise at the SM Skydome on November 16. Presented by Grand Larain Productions, the event treated the fans to an up close and personal meeting experience with the popular actor.

The 33-year-old Korean-Canadian actor is highly praised by fans and critics for his versatility. His notable roles include his stint as a two-faced tutor in Parasite, the affable classmate in Train to Busan, and the free-spirited illustrator in Our Beloved Summer.

Choi Woo Shik made his entrance to the stage by singing “The Giving Tree”, a ballad from Our Beloved Summer’s soundtrack. Fans cheered lovingly as snippets of the series flashed in the background.

Hosted by the bubbly Denise Laurel, an interview session was held with Woo Shik. He said that longed to go to the Philippines because he was unable to do so during the pandemic during which he only held an online fan meeting.

Now that he was finally here, he took the time to connect with his fans. He tried to speak English whenever he could. He also made it a point to look fans in the eyes and to wave at them as if to greet them again and again. Casual as he is, his answers were very spontaneous and straightforward.

Of all the characters he played, he finds Choi Ung from Our Beloved Summer as the most relatable, but he also has a side that shares similarities with Kim Kiwoo from Parasite. He also mentioned that one of his best memories as an actor is when he, along with the cast of Parasite, won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in the USA. He even brought the trophy to show it to the audience.

Last March, Woo Shik was spotted casually filming something in the residential area of Navotas City, much to everyone’s surprise. When asked about it, he said that it was such a short visit and he was not able to go around the country. He later said that he would consider the Philippines as one of his summer destinations.

The fan meeting also featured special video messages from his fellow Wooga Squad members BTS’ V / Kim Taehyung, Park Seojun, Park Hyungsik, and actress Jung Yumi from the reality show Jinny’s Kitchen. Each one expressed their positive affirmations for the star of the evening.

Lucky fans who won the raffle also got their chance to climb up on stage and interact with Woo Shik. A trivia game about the actor was held and the winners were able to take Polaroid selfies with him. One fan was so overwhelmed that she cried when she saw him up front. Woo Shik was taken aback by this and disclosed that it was the first time a fan cried in front of him.

As a bonus, he also prepared a sweet gift for his fans. As shown in the VCR, he asked the help of Jung Yonghwa, frontman of the Korean band CNBLUE, to teach him how to sing well onstage. As a dedicated actor, Woo Shik admits that he is not very confident with his musical chops, but when he sang a cover of “Love Light” by CNBLUE during the fan meeting, fans were very appreciative of his performance.

“I will always take this energy with me and become a good actor,” Choi Woo Shik told the crowd. He explained that he was nervous at first, but seeing the fans cheer for him gave him strength. Repeatedly, he thanked everyone for coming, and with a pinky promise, he vowed to come back to the Philippines again. To bid goodbye, he sang “Poom”, a collaboration song with Peakboy. A quick Hi-Bye Session for all attendees was held shortly after.

  • Johnny Orlando: A Good Ride in Manila

Johnny Orlando: A Good Ride in Manila

Johnny Orlando returns to the Philippines for the Manila leg of The Ride Tour. Presented by Live Nation, the concert was held at 12 Monkeys Music Hall, Estancia, Pasig on November 20.

The 20-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter last visited during the live busking event with Zack Tabudlo at the Venice Grand Canal in August of last year. This time, he has amassed a steady number of fans who were very familiar with the majority of his songs.

The evening began with the opening act GUS (full name: Gus McMillan) who played a good set of his self-composed tracks like “Pluto” and “Big Things Small Seeds”.

When Johnny Orlando made his way to the center stage, the crowd was ecstatic. He started off with a slew of his “Boyfriend”, “Blur” and “You’re Just Drunk” which instantly connected with his fans, many of them singing along to every word.

The Ride’s setlist was a mix of catchy pop-rock tracks about young love – attraction, romance, and heartache – which resonated with the audience of mostly teenagers to young adults. Songs like “If he wanted to, he would”, “What If (I Told You I Like You”), and “leave the light on” were particularly in tune with the crowd. There were also mellow acoustic songs like “coping (1621)”, “all the things can go wrong” “someone will love you better”. Johnny also included a handful of new songs like “A Man Like Me”, “thinking of me” and “party for two”. His renditions of The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” and Katy Perry’s “The One that Got Away” were also appealing additions to the mix.

Johnny’s alluring presence onstage captivated his fans. The stage was set up very close to the audience, meaning that the artists were close enough to reach. Johnny Orlando was very accommodating all throughout the concert, obliging people’s requests and approaching them as close as he possibly could.

“It’s good to be back. You guys made me feel so welcome,” Johnny told the crowd as he thanked them again and again for coming to his show. He is set to release the album on December 8.

Bared de Guia, “For months, we’ve had endless back-and-forth discussions with artist representatives on a possible set list for Manila. So for Filipino music fans, this is a great opportunity to watch a legend – two legends if you add Todd Rundgren – performing songs that remain staples of popular music to this day.
