SB19โ€™s Josh Cullen forges own path with โ€œGet Rightโ€

The upbeat track is helmed by Josh Cullen himself with additional production by frequent collaborator Ocho the Bullet and UK-based indie sensation No Rome.

P-Pop superstar Josh Cullen reclaims creative independence on his own terms with the release of his new single โ€œGet Rightโ€ via Sony Music Entertainment.

The electro-pop banger finds the SB19 rapper and vocalist embracing his music journey while navigating the challenges of making a dent in a highly competitive industry as a solo act.

Josh explains, โ€œBasically, itโ€™s a declaration of my return, confidently showcasing my understanding of the game. The lyrics reflect my resilience, self-assurance, and the realization of how the industry operates. It’s about asserting my presence, owning my space, and creating music that resonates with who I am as an artist.โ€

Written and produced by Josh Cullen himself with frequent collaborator Ocho the Bullet and UK-based indie icon No Rome, the upbeat track marks a significant departure from the vibe and songwriting style of his previous releases. Integrating EDM, hip-hop, and hyper-pop influences with a bass-heavy production, โ€œGet Rightโ€ explores music for the sheer joy of reinvention and fun while tapping into a new sonic space that fits Joshโ€™s personal style and brand.

โ€œI was pretty much the brains and director of the process, but my cousin โ€˜Ochoโ€™ really elevated things, surpassing my expectations,โ€ the fast-rising producer and singer-songwriter explains. โ€œI might’ve pushed him a bit hard with my specific vision, which got a bit stressful. However, he went all out on this insane drop we’d been dreaming of. And you know what? The outcome exceeded all my expectations.โ€

Josh adds, โ€œAlso, No Rome, who was a co-producer, brought some crazy energy to the mix too. His input added this insane energy to the whole process. He really brought some fire to the table.โ€

    Josh Cullen

The release of the song comes with visuals developed by Josh himself. The music video features Josh and friends hanging out in Los Angeles, enjoying the warm climate and the laid-back, cosmopolitan lifestyle usually associated with the city.

โ€œI just went with the flow and let my creativity run wild during those times,โ€ said Josh. โ€œI wanted to bring the visuals I’ve had in mind since we started making the song to life, and LA turned out to be the perfect spot for it. Yet, truthfully, YouMeUs and my team in LA exceeded all expectations. Despite being only three people in LA, their effort and discipline were monumental. They managed to make it look like a full-blown production with their dedication, imagination, improvisation, and hard work.โ€

Josh Cullenโ€™s โ€œGet Rightโ€ is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. The music video drops tonight, December 15, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. on Josh Cullenโ€™s official YouTube page.

  • Tate McRae tops Apple Music charts in more than 10 countries

Tate McRae tops Apple Music charts in more than 10 countries

Breakthrough pop artist Tate McRae has recently dropped her highly anticipated sophomore album, Think Later.

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Tate McRae solidifies her breakout moment with the release of her highly anticipated sophomore album, THINK LATER via RCA Records.

Upon its debut, the pop blockbuster topped Apple Music in more than ten countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Norway, and more.

In the Philippines, Tate McRae peaked at no. 14 on Apple Music, and continues to blow up with smash singles โ€œgreedyโ€ and โ€œexesโ€ gaining traction on both streaming and top 40 radio.

THINK LATER and its 14 songs are steeped in pop appeal and infectious toplines. Showcasing Tate McRaeโ€™s boundless vocal talent and evolution as a songwriter, this new body of work explores the all-too-relatable feelings of falling in love and embracing the raw emotions that you experience as a result of leading with your intuition and heart.

Executive produced by hitmaker Ryan Tedder (Taylor Swift, Beyoncรฉ), the album features writing collaborators and producers including Amy Allen (Harry Styles, Justin Bieber), Jasper Harris (Doja Cat, Post Malone), Greg Kurstin (Adele, Pink), ILYA (Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith), Savan Kotecha (Ariana Grande, The Weeknd) and more.

Speaking on the album, Tate says, โ€œAfter freshly turning 20, when I began to zoom out and reflect on the relationships and situations in my life, I realized that a common thread was that I had been living and making decisions much more spontaneously and way less with my head for the past year. This album represents the feelings of falling in love, feeling glimpses of obsession, missing the signs, and feeling the repercussions. I really wanted to lean into a more pop-leaning sound and approach my writing from a way more playful and curious place. I was able to make this album with a few people I admire so much, and could not be more grateful.โ€

    Tracklist

    1. cut my hair
    2. greedy
    3. run for the hills
    4. hurt my feelings
    5. grave
    6. stay done
    7. exes
    8. weโ€™re not alike
    9. calgary
    10. messier
    11. think later
    12. guilty conscience
    13. want that too
    14. plastic palm trees

Lead single โ€œgreedy,โ€ earned the star her first #1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, Global Excl. US chart and Spotifyโ€™s Global chart. The self-assured hypnotic offering has garnered over 552 million streams to date and hit #7 on the Hot 100 along with #1 most added at Top 40 and Hot AC radio upon release. โ€œgreedyโ€ has been called โ€œan artistic turning pointโ€ฆ a propulsive self-empowerment anthem built around a firecracker of a pop hook that finds McRae dipping in and out of a falsetto while exuding unshakeable confidenceโ€ by Billboard.

Of all the new releases on November 17th, Tateโ€™s latest song โ€œexes,โ€ had the biggest debut on Spotifyโ€™s Global Top Songs chart. It was released alongside a steamy music video featuring intoxicating visuals and high-energy choreography as Tate and her dancers took over a rundown rodeo for the night. Making it her biggest first-week debut to date, โ€œexesโ€ has been deemed โ€œequally infectiousโ€ฆwith a chorus thatโ€™s catchy enough to put the same kind of success well within reachโ€ by Rolling Stone.

Last month, Tate made her musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live with host Jason Momoa where she performed her hit single โ€œgreedyโ€ and debuted a new song โ€œgrave.โ€ She was featured on the cover of Billboardโ€™s November Music Awards Issue and performed โ€œgreedyโ€ at the award show.

  • Sony Music Entertainment Philippines and Benj Pangilinan honor the tradition of โ€˜paying it forwardโ€™ through the Season of Giving campaign

Sony Music Entertainment Philippines and Benj Pangilinan honor the tradition of โ€˜paying it forwardโ€™ through the Season of Giving campaign

The initiative is part of a campaign to engage the country in a fight to alleviate food insecurity and malnutrition.

Sony Music Entertainment Philippines (SMEP) and Filipino singer-songwriter Benj Pangilinan have recently linked up with Rise Against Hunger Philippines (RAHP), an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, to support communities in Manila that are impacted by food insecurity and malnutrition.

This initiative is part of Sony Music Groupโ€™s global โ€˜Season of Givingโ€™ campaign, where the company upholds its commitment to collaborating with partner organizations through a series of in-person events and charitable activities.

For this particular project, the international record label has collaborated with Rise Against Hunger Philippines in enacting programs that are designed to uplift the lives of many people through food aid and entertainment. In a collective statement, RAHP was all praises to Sony Music Philippines and Benj for spreading the holiday joy with the children this season of giving. โ€œTheir dedication to give back not only makes this holiday season merrier for the kids but also makes our mission to achieve food security all the more possible.โ€

The fast-rising recording star has recently joined the SMEP team through a day of volunteering and performances at the Better World Tondo community center, which functions as a food bank and feeding center. This is where RAHP holds food drives, and the AHA Learning Center manages an after-class studying program for disadvantaged kids.

Aside from providing relief and assistance to the beneficiaries, Benj performed two songs, including his current single, โ€œDance Like You.โ€

โ€œGiving back has always been something Iโ€™ve loved doing,โ€ the Sony Music talent said. โ€œThis opportunity was a wonderful experience for me. Sometimes, when you bless others, you realize later how much youโ€™ve gained and learned from the experience. Iโ€™m also grateful to Sony and my management team from Genesis for sharing my vision when it comes to giving back to the community.โ€

Donning a hairnet, gloves, and a Rise Against Hunger PH apron, the young and promising artist engaged with the kids through fun games and activities and helped in the distribution of food.

In a random act of kindness, the multi-talented newcomer also talked to one of the ice cream cart vendors outside and bought his whole stock for the day. He distributed ice cream to the kids and moms who were present during the feeding program activity.

Benj shares, โ€œWe were about to leave, and I just saw the guy selling, so I just thought to help out. I didnโ€™t expect that a small act like that would have such a major impact on them. Iโ€™m always happy to help.โ€

Season of Giving, a global initiative of Sony Music Group, runs throughout the holiday season in collaboration with charity partners across Africa, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Continental Europe, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In addition to Benj Pangilinan, other notable artists who have volunteered with partner organizations and Sony Music Entertainment in the past two years include Shoti, NOBITA, and Hazel Faith.

This campaign also represents the companyโ€™s ongoing philanthropic commitment to forge partnerships and support communities that need it most, which are anchored in its culture of making a difference and contributing to social development through music.

โ€œAt Sony Music Philippines, we believe in using our platform to not only entertain but also to uplift and empower communities,โ€ Roslyn Pineda, General Manager, Philippines, Sony Music Entertainment, explains in a press statement. We are committed to continuing our Season of Giving initiatives and partnering with organizations like Rise Against Hunger Philippines to create a positive impact in our society.โ€

Pineda adds, โ€œTogether with artists like Benj Pangilinan, we look forward to more opportunities to give back and make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most. We are immensely proud of their dedication and grateful to have such compassionate individuals as part of our Sony Music family.โ€

Melodic Fusion: Flu Band, Hybs, and Benny Sings Concert Unites Sounds and Styles

On a Tuesday night in Manila, music enthusiasts gathered at The Filinvest Tent for an unforgettable concert experience featuring three sensational bands: FLU, HYBS, and Benny Sings. Produced by Karpos Live, the event promised a diverse range of musical styles and a night to remember.

FLU, the opening act, kicked off the evening with their energetic set. The band treated the audience to hits like “Get Down” and “Fine Day,” setting the tone for an evening filled with vibrant melodies. Grateful for the opportunity to share the stage with HYBS and Benny Sings, FLU expressed their appreciation during a heartfelt interlude. “Thank you, Hybs. Thank you, Benny Sings, for letting us be part of the show. It’s a great privilege,” they exclaimed before diving into more of their soulful tunes, including “Is This The Love That I Need” and “Ain’t Hiding.”

  • Offshore Music delivers โ€˜kaleidoscope of emotionsโ€™ on the 9-track holiday album, An Offshore Christmas

Offshore Music delivers โ€˜kaleidoscope of emotionsโ€™ on the 9-track holiday album, An Offshore Christmas

An Offshore Christmas features tracks from Ena Mori, Mt. Lewis, Elton Clark, Sansette, and more!

Offshore Music, a Manila-based record label known for its focus on creative integrity, captures the spirit of the holiday season with a new compilation album, An Offshore Christmas, featuring its stellar roster of local music acts.

Aptly titled An Offshore Christmas, the 9-track record earworms its way into the collective consciousness with diverse stories spanning generations and experiences, interpreting what Christmas meant from varied lenses: a joyful hymn that brims with life and humanity, a vodka-induced downer that revels in the sentiments of missing home, a quirky jam that envelopes listeners with comforting warmth, and simply, a frustrated sad song that barely keeps up with the seasonโ€™s booming, optimistic energy.

As Offshore Music CEO Ely Buendia puts it, โ€œThe album is a kaleidoscope of emotions, from melancholy to euphoria, as well as a feast for anyone who enjoys all kinds of music.โ€

Offshore Music General Manager Audry Dionisio takes pride in the recordโ€™s insistence not to be boxed in the usual category of how a holiday-inspired album should be. She points out, โ€œWe also made sure that people from different walks of life would not feel left out. Every song in the album can be played way past the Christmas season, thatโ€™s for sure.โ€

The Christmas-themed album features recently released tracks from its esteemed lineup of artists, including Pinkmen, Suspiria Pink, Elton Clark, Sansette, Eliza Marie, JR Oca Experience, Sulo, as well as additional new songs from ena mori and Mt. Lewis.

โ€œWith the new roster of artists on board, it also created a fresh and inspired energy within us to collaborate more with them and for them to showcase their abilities to the public more,โ€ Offshore Music A&R Director Pat Sarabia shares.

Mt. Lewisโ€™ โ€œTrip To Jerusalem,โ€ the albumโ€™s focus track, provides a contemporary spin on The Eraserheadsโ€™ cult holiday classic while retaining the originalโ€™s intrinsic charm and fuzz. When asked about how he feels about the rendition, Ely Buendia expressed his approval of the bandโ€™s tenacity to breathe new life to an underrated, deep cut. โ€œWe thought it was fitting to honor their brave achievement by having one of our artists cover a song from Fruitcake for our own Christmas release.โ€

Another album highlight is ena moriโ€™s โ€œChristmas Song (Version II),โ€ a bittersweet little tune about choosing to celebrate Christmas alone with cats rather than joining a party filled with family members and friends who do nothing but send a minefield of emotional triggers. Over snappy, acoustic guitars and minimal percussions, the alt-pop star delivers an anthem that is bold and uncompromising in its message but remains hopeful amidst the intention to hide the hurting.

Offshore A&R Manager Otep Tumambing emphasizes that the holiday record is more than just a reinforcement of postcard-perfect tradition but also a time to nurse the wounds of isolation and griefโ€”all valid feelings that deserve to be celebrated on the same level as their merrier counterparts.

โ€œChristmas is one of the most celebrated holidays globally, symbolizing joy, togetherness, and generosity. An Offshore Christmas aims to provide our artists and their audience with a platform to express their views on Christmas, even if it’s about sadness and loneliness. Not everyone experiences the usual โ€˜happyโ€™ Christmas, and they deserve to be celebrated as well.โ€

โ€˜An Offshore Christmasโ€™ is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Offshore Music and Sony Music Entertainment.

    ABOUT THE ROSE:
The Korean Alt Pop band is composed of four members: vocalist and guitarist Woosung, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Dojoon, bassist Jaehyeong, and drummer Hajoon. Renowned since their inception for electrifying performances, The Rose quickly became one of Korea’s most sought-after groups delivering a series of critically acclaimed albums that resonated with fans worldwide. In 2019, three of the band members temporarily went on hiatus to fulfill their mandatory military service obligations, during which Woosung pursued a successful solo career, releasing captivating albums and embarking on sold-out world tours. In a moment of sheer joy for their devoted fans, The Rose reunited during one of Woosung’s performances in South Korea in 2022. This reunion paved the way for their first full-length album HEAL, which was inspired by the transformative power of music and the stories shared by both their fans and themselves. HEAL soared to #4 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart, while their accompanying HEAL Together World Tour drew an overwhelming crowd of over 90,000 attendees. Now, with their sophomore full-length album DUAL which made the Mediabase 200 chart in its first week of sales, The Rose takes their music to new heights with Rolling Stone UK calling it โ€œan album that takes you on a layered, emotional journey, full of elation, heartache and twists and turns – just like life itself.โ€ Building upon the emotional honesty and vulnerability showcased in HEAL, this latest offering explores the profound concept of ‘balance.’ Seamlessly merging light and dark elements, The Rose masterfully weaves emotions and sounds, capturing the dualistic essence that defines their music.

  • yama in Manila: Worth the Wait!

yama in Manila: Worth the Wait!

Japanese singer yama performs their first solo concert in the Philippines at The Podium Hall in Mandaluyong City on the 1st of December. Their tour aptly titled thanks for waiting is a treat for the fans who longed for the artist to come to Manila.

yamaโ€™s identity is generally shrouded in mystery. The singer is known for their trademark bright royal blue bob, matched with a white masquerade mask and a white hooded jacket, but their real name, age, and gender are intentionally left unidentified. (This is a subculture within the Japanese music industry wherein certain musical artists hide their identities completely.)

The concert started on a high note with the playful melody of โ€œHaru wo Tsugeruโ€, the famed debut song. yamaโ€™s astonishing vocal prowess shone throughout the evening, and fans were cheering from the get-go. If you had listened to any of their songs beforehand, youโ€™d be surprised by how the live performance sounded almost the same as the recorded versions. yamaโ€™s masterful control of their vocals coupled with their powerful delivery of the lyrics made the show extra memorable.

Backed by keyboardist Akinori Handa and drummer Akinori Yamamoto, yamaโ€™s concert was a spark full of colors. They performed with a vibrant setlist including well-recognized songs from animes like โ€œColorโ€ from Spy X Family, โ€œOz.โ€ from Ranking of Kings, and โ€œslashโ€ from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. The funky โ€œDowntownโ€ and โ€œa.m.3:21โ€ got the crowd singing and clapping along. Delving into a more mellow side, yama also performed with the R&B-infused โ€œCreamโ€, the ballads โ€œpure colorsโ€ and โ€œhikari no yoruโ€.

During the entire show, photography and videography of any kind were not allowed. Thanks to this, the audience was focused on the artist and the music. Fans were dancing and cheering along (some with lightsticks as well) as each track played. The stage was rather set plainly, but the lighting was top-notch, with every flicker capturing the aura of every song.

Without the aid of a translator, yama spoke to the crowd in Japanese. Interestingly, the fans understood every word. The singer said the Philippines is one of the top listeners of their music on Spotify, and that is one of the reasons they chose to include Manila in the tour stop. Although yama seemed to be aloof at first, they expressed gratitude to the crowd and as the show progressed, they got more and more relaxed onstage.

Towards the end, the anthemic โ€œkubittakeโ€ (which translates to โ€œmadly in loveโ€), a crowd favorite, got people jumping and singing along. This was followed by the captivating acoustic rendition of โ€œMasshiroโ€ and the hopeful โ€œThe world is supposed to be beautifulโ€.

After the show, yama took a photo with some of the lucky fans outside the venue and posted it on Twitter.

Special thanks to Live Nation Philippines!

Warner Music Philippines Unveils Remarkable Compilation Album in Celebration of 30th Year in the Industry

Letโ€™s celebrate three decades of Warner Music PH with these wonderfully reimagined hits!

Warner Music Philippines, one of the countryโ€™s biggest record labels is celebrating their 30th year in the industry with an extravagant compilation, featuring a star-studded lineup of their own signed and managed talented artists, showcasing the diverse and vibrant music scene of today.

Before this project came to life and earlier this year, the label kicked off โ€˜We Play Hereโ€™, which is a series of live performances and events to bring fans as well as local and international artists even closer together. Its success was evident because the kick-off โ€˜We Play Hereโ€™ event held at Samsung Hall at SM Aura last April 27 headlined by Felip, Dilaw, Lola Amour, Leanne & Naara and more was joined and well-loved by lots of OPM fans.

Now in their 30th year, Warner Music PHโ€™s dedication to supporting local talent has been stronger than ever. The renowned record label has curated an extraordinary musical experience by reviving some of the strongest hits on their catalog and making it a monumental compilation album, aptly titled โ€˜Warner 30thโ€™

To celebrate the release of these reimagined popular songs from the past decades, an upcoming milestone event is happening this December to guarantee to bring a one-of-a-kind, high-energy live music experience thatโ€™s truly unforgettable for everyone.

The โ€˜Warner 30thโ€™ Compilation launch is to take place on December 8, 2023 at Balcony Music House in Makati. Audiences can look forward to electrifying performances by the label’s commendable artist roster: Lola AmourDilawJason DhakalRangel, and Jireh Lim.

Below is the list of the most sought-after artists signed under Warner Music Philippines who joined the powerful compilation album:

Arthur Miguel, has been part of the Top 10 Spotify daily charts this year with his smash hit โ€œLIhimโ€. His soothing vocals earned a surge of streams and  numerous Spotify playlists such as Hot Hits Philippines, Tatak Pinoy, Viral Hits Philippines, and many more. For this compilation album, he made a rendition of โ€œYour Universeโ€ by Rico Blanco.

A rising singer-songwriter, Noah Alejandreโ€™s music speaks of the struggles and experiences of youngsters. His music is heartfelt, honest, and raw, evident in his singles โ€œNahuhulog Na Saโ€™yoโ€, โ€œEntabladoโ€, and โ€œDi Man Tinadhanaโ€. For the record labelโ€™s anniversary, he mesmerized everyone with his own version of Rico Blancoโ€™s โ€œAntukinโ€

Also, part of this big event are Cliff and Reanne Borella for their own refreshing rendition of Ninaโ€™s hit song โ€œJealousโ€.  Cliff is the most streamed artist in Eastern Visayas and a highly sought-after artist from Ormoc City, Leyte. He peaked at 950,000+ Monthly Listeners on Spotify for โ€œSunsets With Youโ€ which placed in several Spotify editorials and became hit trend in Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia and with over 31 million streams to date. Reanne, also a singer-songwriter from Leyte, gained recognition after winning Philpop 2020 with their bilingual single โ€œSuyoโ€ as one half of the indie pop duo, reon. Now sheโ€™s pursuing her career as a solo artist under Warner Music Philippines.

A true artist and performer since childhood, Rangel joined local talent competitions, learned to play the guitar and uploaded her first original song to Soundcloud in 2016. Her popularity rose further after being part of noontime show Eat Bulaga. She was part of Music Hero, a now disbanded pop-rock group that popularized a song she wrote — โ€œKLWKNโ€. Since going solo and joining Warner Music Philippines, she has released โ€œHanggang Saanโ€, โ€œDIKAโ€, โ€œBabalikโ€, plus her own version of Kitchie Nadalโ€™s hit, โ€œSame Groundโ€.

Born into a family closely tied to music, jikamarie first made headlines for her track โ€œlutangโ€ which reached #22 on the Spotify Daily Chart. More releases followed with โ€œKailangan ko ngโ€ฆโ€ โ€œKISLAPโ€, โ€œthe sun is youโ€, โ€œHALIMAWโ€, and even collaborated with JRLDM and Jireh Lim. She brings good vibes with her own take on โ€œBulongโ€ by Kitchie Nadal. To date, she is gearing up for her first debut album.

The talented contemporary queer R&B singer-songwriter Jason Dhakal is also part of the mix. His spectacular and refreshing revival of Sittiโ€™s โ€œPara Sa Akinโ€ has taken the track to the top 50 on Spotifyโ€™s Daily Chart. Jason  marked his breakthrough with his critically-acclaimed debut EP โ€˜Night Inโ€™ in 2018 which saw collaboration tracks with Jess Connelly and dot.jaime. In 2020 he released โ€˜lovesoundโ€™ co-produced by celebrated local composer LUSTBASS. Jason also did a collaboration with Arthur Nery on โ€œHappy w uโ€ and was part of various local festivals Fรชte de la Musique, All Of The Noise, and Double Happiness by 88rising.

JRLDM who dropped notable singles โ€œPatiwakalโ€, followed by โ€œPARASITIKOโ€ just teamed up with Party PaceASTRO, and Slimm in his refreshing R&B-Hip-hop version of โ€œLaklakโ€ popularized by rock band Teeth. His artist name is a stylized iteration of โ€œJerald-Damnโ€.

P-Pop Group 1st.One is also part of the celebration, crafting a poppy and danceable version of the hit song โ€œYour Loveโ€ by Alamid.

โ€œChinelasโ€, one of Kamikazeeโ€™s earlier hits, was also given a total makeover from one of the most sought-after bands this year, Baguioโ€™s pride Dilaw. The band teamed up with AsianCutie to create the track. The band went viral this year for their breakout song, โ€œUhaw (Tayong Lahat) with now over 124 million Spotify streams and millions of engagements on TikTok. The track won Best Alternative Recording, Best Performance by a Group Recording Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year at the 36th Awit Awards in November 2023.

Born and raised in Davao, Paul Pablo rose to popularity with songs like โ€œBanginโ€, โ€œKalawakanโ€ and โ€œKayaโ€. He did a remarkable spin on Rico Blancoโ€™s 2008 comeback single โ€œYugto.โ€ His fresh take on OPM and the impressive LGBTQ representation is proves to be changing the game in the Philippines Music Industry.

FELIP surprised everyone with an acoustic guitar-driven version of โ€œMoving Closerโ€ which was originally performed by Never The Strangers off their 2012 self-titled album. The P-Pop soloist dropped his debut EP COMโ€ขPLEX this year and it was loaded with hip-hop, R&B, and trap music. His single โ€œROCKSTAโ€ now has almost 3 million streams on Spotify.

Up-and-coming artist Nicole Anjela collaborated with Josh Dutch and did a soothing version of โ€œSo Blueโ€ originally performed by Sinosikat?

Rising six-piece folk-pop band Sugarcane is also part of the compilation record, doing a captivating revival of โ€œSet You Free,โ€ one of the most popular songs from Side A. The band, who has over 2.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify has eight original songs in the millions of streams on the said platform. Their most popular song โ€œLeonoraโ€ now has over 40.6 million streams. Their song โ€œParuparoโ€ has been nominated for Song of the Year, Best Alternative Recording, and Best Collaboration in Awit Awards 2023.

Lastly, โ€œRaining in Manilaโ€ hitmaker Lola Amour is part of the mix. The band, now with over 4.7 million Spotify monthly listeners is 2023โ€™s breakthrough artist. For the record labelโ€™s 30th year anniversary, they did a refreshing take on Kitchie Nadalโ€™s โ€œHuwag Na Huwag Mong Sasabihinโ€ which exploded during the early 2000s.

Fans can expect a blend of nostalgia and fresh vibes as Warner Music Philippines revisits iconic tracks from its illustrious catalog while introducing new and exciting sounds that continue to define the label’s future. Avail limited tickets for the โ€˜Warner 30thโ€™ Compilation launch via warner30th.helixpay.ph.

  • Live-Action โ€˜Yu Yu Hakushoโ€™ Trailer Unveils Trailblazing Visual Effects

Live-Action โ€˜Yu Yu Hakushoโ€™ Trailer Unveils Trailblazing Visual Effects

Ahead of the eagerly awaited debut ofย Yu Yu Hakushoย next week, the trailer is giving fans a taste of the groundbreaking visual effects that bring to life the intense battles between humans and demons, setting a new standard for live-action adaptations.

The five-episode series captures the essence of the original best-selling manga by incorporating supernatural elements in a way that appears realistic. This was made possible through the collaboration with Scanline VFX, known for their work on major Hollywood productions.

โ€œTo what extent CGI-characters can be shown close-up depends on the distance from the camera, whether thereโ€™s dialogue, and the facial expression,โ€ said visual effects director Tomofumi Akahane. โ€œWith Scanline VFX on board, we were able to reach higher than any other Japanese title and achieve a quality where the average viewer wonโ€™t be able to tell that CGI is actually CGI.โ€

The team made use of the latest performance capture technology, with 170 cameras filming the actors simultaneously in 360 degrees. This allows director Sho Tsukikawa to choose the best angle afterward as if moving a single camera, resulting in realistic CG character assets that seamlessly interact with the live-action elements.

Recreating battles between humans and demons

As the setting of Yu Yu Hakusho includes the Human World, the Demon World and the Spirit World, the team had to create many of the demons from scratch. And the battles between humans and demons were among the most difficult to recreate visually from the manga, especially the scenes with the Toguro Brothersโ€”the Elder Toguro can distort his body and the Younger Toguro can expand his muscles.

โ€œThe body size of the actors and the characters are different, so it was really hard to change the scale. It wasnโ€™t just a matter of changing their height, we needed to ensure that the sight lines of the opponents were accurate,โ€ said visual effects advisor Ryo Sakaguchi, who was the first Japanese visual producer to win a Scientific and Technical Award at the Oscars. The team ended up creating and printing 3D models of the Toguro Brothers, and attaching them to the actors for the shoot, so that it was easier and more natural for those acting opposite them.

Moreover, as many of the actors were not used to working with CGI during shoots, the production team came up with various ideas to help the actors perform, including having a stunt person wear blue clothes and fight opposite the actor.

โ€œHow do actors imagine an enemy that isnโ€™t actually in front of them?โ€ asked action director Takahito Ouchi. โ€œNo matter how much you tell them that an enemy is there, they need to get fired up enough to make it seem like they are really fighting. And that realism is born from the passion of the actors.โ€

The fate of the Human World lies in Yusukeโ€™s hands. Watch โ€˜Yu Yu Hakushoโ€™ on December 14, exclusively on Netflix.
