As his four-night tour run in Hong Kong comes to a close, The Weeknd has released “Hong Kong (feat. 王菲季候風),” a cross-cultural tribute that brings one of Cantopop’s most enduring voices into his musical world. Built around Faye Wong’s 1993 classic “Monsoon” (季候風), the track draws from the original recording and its Cantonese vocals, offering a nod to the city’s musical heritage and the artist’s longstanding appreciation for its culture.

The song made its live debut on October 24 at Kai Tak Stadium, marking the opening night of The Weeknd’s four-show Hong Kong run. Beyond its musical reference, the release reflects his admiration for Cantopop and the cinema of Wong Kar-wai, whose films include Chungking Express, starring Wong alongside Tony Leung. Its cover artwork further reinforces that connection, featuring a photograph of Hong Kong from the personal collection of Christopher Doyle, the acclaimed cinematographer behind several of Wong Kar-wai’s most celebrated films.

The response has extended well beyond the stadium. A clip of the live performance shared during The Weeknd’s Instagram Live reportedly surpassed 18 million views and one million likes, while the release sparked renewed interest in Faye Wong’s original recording. “Monsoon” subsequently climbed music charts across China, reaching No. 1 on the rising charts of QQ Music and NetEase Cloud Music, No. 3 on Apple Music China on October 28, and the Top 10 on Spotify Hong Kong. It also rose 15 places to No. 3 on Shazam China’s daily chart. On Douyin, the topic “This time the seasonal wind is blowing especially hard” reached No. 8 on the platform’s official trending list, while The Weeknd’s Hong Kong post topped the Douyin Entertainment Chart with more than 288,000 likes. Faye Wong’s original music video also reportedly saw an increase in views and engagement.

The release arrives as The Weeknd prepares to bring the After Hours Til Dawn Stadium Tour to its final dates. Since launching in 2022, the tour has sold more than 7.5 million tickets and generated over $1 billion in revenue, making it the highest-grossing tour by a male solo artist. Its first-ever Asia leg expanded from 11 to 17 stadium shows in response to demand, with Kuala Lumpur set to host the final two performances on November 4 and 5.

With “Hong Kong,” The Weeknd closes this chapter of the tour by looking beyond the spectacle of the stadium and toward the music and culture of a city that has long captured his imagination. More than a regional tribute, the release has also introduced a new generation of listeners to a defining piece of Cantopop history.
