A Legend Reborn: National Artists’ Rock Opera Ballet “Tales of the Manuvu” Returns to the Stage this 2026!

TALES OF THE MANUVU MAR. 28-29 PROSCENIUM THEATER ROCKWELL, MAKATI

Alice Reyes Dance Philippines (ARDP), in collaboration with the University of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with the generous support of the Office of Senator Pia Cayetano, is proud to announce the 2026 restaging of Tales of the Manuvu.

Premiered in 1977, this production is the first Filipino rock opera ballet, masterfully weaving indigenous mythology with the vibrant energy of rock and pop music.Catch the strictly limited run at the Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati, on March 28–29.

A Historic Artistic Collaboration This masterpiece was born from the creative synergy of legendary Filipino artists. National Artist Alice Reyes provided the visionary direction and choreography, while National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera penned the libretto. Crucial to its iconic sound was the music composed by OPM icon Dero Pedero, with additional music by the rock band Afterbirth. The original production also featured stars of the Philippine theater and music scene, including Boy Camara, Anthony Castelo, Haji Alejandro, Celeste Legaspi, and the debut of newfound talent, Leah Navarro.

Reflecting on the production’s origins, National Artist Alice Reyes notes: “In 1976, Bien Lumbera and I were both delighted by E. Arsenio Manuel’s folk tales… We agreed that the tales could be rich material for a rock-opera ballet, a dance concept still in its nascent state in the Philippines. We opened on February 25, 1977, to a packed house in the CCP and never looked back. Forty-nine years later—and almost to the day—Tales of the Manuvu makes a strong comeback… Although dance is about change and movement, ARDP puts value and currency in proven works. It continues to foster a collaborative environment for Filipino artists—all in a mission to keep dance as an art form that provokes, excites, and engages the national spirit and consciousness.”

The 2026 Restaging The 2026 production is restaged by ARDP Ballet Master Lester Reguindin. This iteration features new set and costume designs by award-winning director and designer Loy Arcenas, and lighting design by Barbara Tan-Tiongco.

A Stellar Cast of Voices and Movement The production features a powerhouse ensemble of singers and dancers, continuing the tradition of featuring live vocalists and a rock band alongside technical brilliance. With a rotating cast, the production offers a unique experience at every performance.Audiences are invited to catch the different artistic interpretations of both the singers and dancers.

  • Bagets The Musical farewell show welcomes Bongga Ka, ‘Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical!

Bagets The Musical farewell show welcomes Bongga Ka, ‘Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical!

An emotional farewell performance marked the closing show of Bagets The Musical.

With diplomas held high and caps tossed in the air, the Class of ‘85 bid their farewell on stage. On March 22, Bagets The Musical successfully mounted its closing performances at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, concluding a 36-show run. The musical’s finale saw the barkada of Adie, Tonton, Gilbert, Arnel, and Topee, gather one last time as the stage erupted into a nostalgic ’80s party.

Newport World Resorts President and CEO Nilo Thaddeus Rodriguez expressed appreciation to theatergoers for supporting Bagets The Musical and the Philippine live theater.

During the curtain call, Newport World Resorts President and CEO Nilo Rodriguez recognized the partners and production team behind Bagets The Musical, including Viva Communications, The Philippine STAR, and PETA Plus. He also acknowledged director Maribel Legarda, the creative team, cast, musicians, and crew, and thanked audiences who supported the production throughout its run.

“Thank you for celebrating with us as we close the curtain on this 80s party onstage. Bagets The Musical is the latest chapter in what we have been building here: a stronger platform for live theater, powered by Filipino talent. Over the past year, this theater has welcomed different stories and different audiences, with one clear outcome: live performance grows when people choose to build it together,” Rodriguez said.

Following the remarks, the finale brought the story of the Class of ’85 to a close. The scene then shifted from the show’s ’80s setting to the disco nightlife of the ’70s, as the stage transformed into a Coco Banana–inspired party, recalling Manila’s iconic nightclub scene of the era.

A Coco Banana–themed performance revealed Bongga Ka, ’Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical as
the next production at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.

The cast launched into an upbeat mashup of “Bongga Ka Day” and “Manila,” two hits associated with the pioneering OPM band Hotdog, whose music helped define the Manila Sound that dominated the airwaves in the late 1970s and early 1980s. From there, the performance transitioned into “Annie Batungbakal,” another Hotdog classic about a hardworking dispatcher from Frisco (San Francisco del Monte) who becomes a glamorous “disco queen” at Coco Banana.
Serving as the surprise reveal, the performance ultimately announced Bongga Ka, ‘Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical as the next major production coming to the Newport Performing Arts Theater stage.
With its final curtain call, Bagets The Musical concludes its run, while passing the spotlight to the next chapter in Newport World Resorts’ lineup of all-Filipino stage productions. K-pop’s champions of youth TWS (pronounced ‘Two-Us’), consisting of six members—SHINYU, DOHOON, YOUNGJAE, HANJIN, JIHOON, and KYUNGMIN, announces their much-anticipated VR concert, (hereinafter: ‘RUSH ROAD’), which is confirmed to be shown in Manila exclusively at Gateway Cineplex from 17 April to 26 April, 2026. Tickets will be available starting 28 March Saturday at 12 PM PHT via TicketNet.com.ph and TicketNet outlets, presented by Wilbros Live.

The title signifies the journey of youth racing endlessly, symbolically capturing a structural staging that involves entering a new world by following the path. Beyond simply watching the stage, the audience can experience deep immersion, feeling as if they are passing through a journey together with TWS.

This VR concert showcases diverse spatial transformations, starting from a rock festival scene where music explodes, continuing to a rooftop bathed in a golden sunset, and culminating in an aurora unfolding like a scene from a movie. The space and atmosphere transition organically, creating a three-dimensional experience unlike anything found elsewhere. It is also garnering anticipation by promising the longest running time among all VR concerts to date.

In addition, their hit songs “OVERDRIVE” and “plot twist” meet the VR stage, adding new visual spectacles. Furthermore, through “Oh Mymy : 7s,” a song that highlights the sextet’s synchronized choreography and powerful energy, you can enjoy their musical narrative that oscillates between excitement and confidence.

With AMAZE’s proprietary technology, ‘RUSH ROAD’ elevates its overall quality by implementing three-dimensional staging that feels like an extension of reality, stylish camera work, and sound design that maximizes their sense of presence. The refreshing energy and free, dynamic performance that define TWS, combined with VR technology, deliver a charm distinct from conventional stages.

‘RUSH ROAD’ expands the endlessly racing energy of youth into VR, where the focus is placed on the journey into a new world presented by TWS.

    About TWS
TWS (pronounced ‘Two-Us’), consisting of six members—SHINYU, DOHOON, YOUNGJAE, HANJIN, JIHOON, and KYUNGMIN—is a boy group introduced by PLEDIS Entertainment. The name is an abbreviation of ‘TWENTY FOUR SEVEN WITH US,’ bringing forward the expression ’24/7’ to symbolize their unwavering commitment to being with their listeners around the clock. As K-pop’s champions of youth, TWS guides listeners into their youthful evolution with their unique musical style that channels refreshing, unstoppable energy—dubbed ‘Boyhood Pop.’ Upon their breakout debut, the lead single “plot twist,” from their debut album Sparking Blue, became a long-running hit, charting on the Billboard Global 200 for 8 weeks and topping the annual chart of Korea’s leading streaming platform, Melon. Their five consecutive releases—including their debut album, 2nd mini album SUMMER BEAT!, 1st single Last Bell, 3rd mini album TRY WITH US, and 4th mini album play hard—all surpassed half a million sales, cementing their growing popularity in the music scene. The sextet’s remarkable rise was further recognized when the Billboard named them ‘K-Pop’s Rookie of the Month’ last January, and they were featured in the NME 100 as one of the emerging artists for 2025.

The highly anticipated show is set to premiere  soon as part of TV5’s Weekend Trip block and on the Viu app, taking that “Uy, Pilipins!” pride on the global stage.

The show blends food and cultural exchange as the stars break aside from their typical on-screen roles to run a fully operational Filipino pop-up restaurant in one of Seoul’s most dynamic districts. Throughout the show, the stars learn to prepare and serve Filipino comfort food favorites such as Chicken Inasal, Kare-kare, Sisig, and the ever-iconic Lechon—offering many Korean diners an exciting first taste of Filipino cuisine. The cast takes on the challenge of bringing these flavorful dishes to a new audience, spending up to 12 hours a day for seven straight days preparing, cooking, and serving dishes for diners.

Through food, travel, and shared experiences. At the center of it all is Filipino cuisine, and we’re excited to introduce it to a wider audience.”

Filming and editing for Kumusta is fully handled by Korean production company PODO Creative, while Rebisco serves as the program’s main sponsor.

  • SOUPSTAR MUSIC’S NEWEST ARTIST, JAMES LAGADIA, UNVEILS DEBUT SINGLE “DAHAN-DAHAN”

SOUPSTAR MUSIC’S NEWEST ARTIST, JAMES LAGADIA, UNVEILS DEBUT SINGLE “DAHAN-DAHAN”

Soupstar Music proudly introduces its newest recording artist, James Lagadia, as he officially steps into the spotlight with his debut single “Dahan-Dahan,” now available on all digital streaming platforms.

The track tells the story of love that grows little by little, a subtle moment when you realize that somewhere along the way you’ve already fallen. It’s not loud, not rushed but gentle, sincere, and deeply felt. According to James, the song reflects the gradual realization that someone has begun to mean more than you initially thought.

Before officially signing with Soupstar Music, James began performing in church as early as Grade 6. He occasionally stepped outside that space to join select open mics, using those rare opportunities to share his talent and build his confidence as a performer. One crucial moment of his life came when Soupstar Music organized an Open Mic at Velvet Playground, a space for emerging artists to showcase their original music.

James joined the event and performed one of his original compositions. That performance eventually led to an unexpected opportunity—an invitation to further develop his artistry under Soupstar Music’s artist development program. Through this process, the label worked closely with James in honing his sound, songwriting, and overall musical direction. His growth during the development stage eventually led to Soupstar Music officially signing him as one of the label’s recording artists.

Working closely with Eunice Jorge of Gracenote, who served as the producer of the track, James experienced the discipline, patience, and creative collaboration required to produce quality music. The single also features the guitar work of the veteran musician Christopher Buenviaje, a seasoned guitarist, producer, and recording engineer in the OPM industry. Buenviaje has worked with some of the Philippine’s famous artists such as Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Christian Bautista, and Noel Cabangon. Just like these notable artists, Buenviaje brings his signature musically and studio expertise to “Dahan-dahan.” Through long hours of vocal takes and careful refinements “Dahan-dahan” was shaped into a track that stays true to James’ honest and heartfelt songwriting style.

Musically, James describes his sound as emotionally deep and reflective, a song that listeners can quietly absorb and connect with. So, he hopes that his single “Dahan-dahan” gives listeners the courage to acknowledge and express what they truly feel.

“Gusto ko magkaroon sila ng lakas ng loob para sabihin na mahal nila yung isang tao.” James stated. James invites everyone to take a pause, feel the emotions, and let the song speak to them. “Dahan-dahan” available on all major streaming platforms starting March 13, 2026!

Her songwriting often captures honest emotions and everyday stories—qualities that have helped her cultivate a loyal audience through the years.

Eloisa began making music in 2013, initially treating busking as a hobby. However, the consistent experience of performing live and engaging with listeners eventually pushed her to pursue music full-time. What started as a simple passion soon turned into a defining path in her career.

Her growing recognition as a live performer led to memorable appearances on the iconic Wish Bus, as well as features on major Philippine radio and TV stations, where her vocal sincerity and unique acoustic style captured the attention of a wider audience.

Now entering an exciting new chapter, Eloisa has officially signed with KDR Music House, marking a fresh milestone in her journey as an artist. She is set to release her song, “Pag-asa,” in March 2026.

“Pag-asa” reflects the painful realization of holding on to a love filled with uncertainty and empty promises. Through heartfelt lyrics and her signature pop-folk sound, Eloisa tells the story of someone finally choosing to stop hoping for something that may never return. Anchored by the line “Ayoko nang umasa sa wala,” the song becomes a quiet yet powerful declaration of letting go and choosing self-respect.

From the streets where she first shared her songs to larger stages ahead, Eloisa continues to prove that genuine music—and genuine connection—can start anywhere.

  • ‘Bagets’ generation and film stars react to Bagets The Musical!

‘Bagets’ generation and film stars react to Bagets The Musical!

Cast members of Bagets The Musical bring the youthful energy of the beloved coming-of-age story to the stage.

More than four decades after Bagets first captured the spirit of Filipino youth, its stage adaptation is stirring nostalgia among celebrities who grew up in the same era. From members of the original film’s cast to personalities who came of age in the 1980s, many are now sharing their excitement over seeing the beloved story return through Bagets The Musical.

Aga Muhlach joined his son, Andres Muhlach, during the show’s gala night curtain call as the younger actor steps into the role of Adie in Bagets The Musical.

No one perhaps feels that full-circle moment more deeply than Aga Muhlach, who played Adie in the original film and now watches his son Andres Muhlach take on the same role onstage. “I’m excited, I’m nervous, a bit emotional and like who would’ve thought 40 plus years after, my son would be playing my role? And the fact na na-revive yung Bagets is really, sakin, it’s parang out of this world, really,” Aga said.

But even with the weight of legacy, Aga was clear that this version belongs to the young cast carrying it today. “Bagets The Musical is not about me, it’s not about the Bagets cast, the original. It’s about you guys, so forget about us, just think about you. You guys are the stars of the show, so be like one and act like one.”

Singer and actor Raymond Lauchengco, who portrayed Arnel in the original Bagets, attended a performance of Bagets The Musical.

That same sense of joy was shared by Raymond Lauchengco, one of the original film’s stars whom played the role Arnel, who said the musical managed to give him an even bigger rush than revisiting the movie itself. “It was so much fun! I had so much fun! I think I had more fun watching the musical than I did watching the movie that I was in 42 years ago. So congratulations to everybody, thanks for all the energy, the wonderful, wonderful music that you’ve brought back to life.”

The film’s original stars (L-R) Herbert Bautista, Eula Valdes, Yayo Aguila, Cheska Iñigo Winebrenner, and Raymond Lauchengco reunited in support of the show and its new generation of cast.

Yayo Aguila, who played Rose in the 1984 film, shared her excitement seeing fellow Bagets stars relive the memories together. “Happy ako kasi natutuwa ako makita ’yung reaction ni Raymond, Herbert, Eula, ni Cheska,” she shared. “Ang saya lang to go back.”

Former beauty queen and actress Charlene Gonzalez-Muhlach showed support for her son Andres Muhlach during Bagets The Musical opening night.

For Charlene Gonzalez-Muhlach, the production is just as emotional from a mother’s point of view. “I’m very excited. I’m also very nervous. Alam ko rin lahat ng hirap that Andres went through,” she said. “He’s really stepping out of his comfort zone because he’s never sing, dance, and act all together.” She added that the project means even more for Aga and Andres. “I’m just so happy and blessed that Andres was given opportunity to work with great actors and PETA, and such a fabulous project like Bagets. And for him to portray his father’s role as Adie, it’s a full circle moment for him and for Aga as well.”

Senator Risa Hontiveros watched Bagets The Musical, saying the production’s classic ‘80s songs reminded her of the music she listened to during her college years.

Meanwhile, Senator Risa Hontiveros said the musical transported her straight back to her own youth in the ‘80s. “Oh my god, I really didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did, kasi nga Bagets The Musical, so akala ko yung anak ko at tsaka yung kaibigan niya ang mas mag eenjoy. But oh my god, from laughter to you know pleasure at the songs. Songs ng decade ko yan eh, ‘80s, nung nasa college ako.”

What delighted her most was seeing how the musical reached viewers across generations. “Super nag enjoy yung mga bagets ko, nag enjoy ako na nasa college nung ‘80s, and that older couple married in the 80s super nag enjoy. My god, bravo talaga! Mabuhay kayo.” And in the final moments of the show, she said, the production made the audience feel part of the experience itself: “Yung closing scene ‘no? Salamat sinama niyo kaming lahat bilang graduation class of 1984!” More than a nostalgic throwback, Bagets The Musical is turning into a reunion of generations for those discovering the story for the first time, and for those who lived it the first time around.

Milo Cruz (Tonton), Noel Comia Jr. (Gilbert), Ethan David (Arnel), Andres Muhlach (Adie), and Sam Shoaf (Topee) take a post-show selfie backstage at the Newport Performing Arts Theater following the successful opening show of Bagets The Musical.

  • From hashtag to poetry: Gloc-9’s Makata Sa Pinas

From hashtag to poetry: Gloc-9’s Makata Sa Pinas

Rap icon Gloc-9 is re-introducing himself as Aristotle Pollisco, poet.

On March 12, 2026, at the Philippine Book Festival in SM Megamall, Gloc-9, going by his real name Aristotle Pollisco, will be launching seven poetry chapbooks under the omnibus title Makata Sa Pinas — a hashtag he has been using the past decade.

While Gloc-9 previously released the poetry book Akin Lang Naman in 2017 with ABS-CBN Publishing, this new project offers a different approach to presenting his work as poetry. This time, Gloc-9 envisioned a series of slimmer volumes—a concept that became the starting point of the project.

In collaboration with the small press Everything’s Fine, the idea grew into a deeper reexamination of his entire discography. By revisiting the recurring themes and subject matter that consistently surface throughout his music, seven chapbooks were developed, each shaped around these enduring ideas and reflections.

The first three chapbooks are personal. “Pagkatao” tracks his development as a poet, talking about his roots in Binangonan, Rizal, and how this formed him into the rapper that we now know as Gloc-9. “Pangarap” includes all the poems about his dreams of becoming a songwriter and a rapper, reaching those aspirations, and reassessing what that means to him. “Pursigi” talks about the kind of hard work and persistence that reaching one’s ambitions demands, the clarity of one’s goals, and the importance of holding on to one’s values.

From the personal, the next two chapbooks slowly shift to Gloc-9’s storytelling through poetry. “Pagibig” speaks of love — from the familial to the romantic, and to the ones that unravel and end painfully. “Komunidad” tells the stories of the people that exist in our local neighborhoods — the people we talk to, the ones we care for, the ones we rarely see.

The final two chapbooks turn to the more political dimensions of Gloc-9’s poetry. “Lipunan” reflects on the kind of society we have collectively—and often unconsciously—built, shaped by who we have become as people and by the hate and compassion we choose to nurture within it. “Bayan” is composed of the stories of our nation that few popular songwriters speak of, from the perspective of the struggling majority who suffer in the hands of the wealthy and powerful few.

In totality, the seven chapbooks of Makata Sa Pinas capture the 28 years of Aristotle Pollisco as the poet of the nation. It also reminds us of how much more he can continue to do, given where he comes from, who he has become, and the legacy he has continued to build.

Gloc-9 will be at the Makata Sa Pinas book launch on March 12, 2026, 5PM to 7PM, at the Philippine Book Festival 2026, Megatrade Hall, 5th Level, SM Megamall. Admission is free.

    About the books

Makata Sa Pinas: Mga Tula ni Aristotle Pollisco is a collection of seven poetry chapbooks by Gloc-9, whose real name is Aristotle Pollisco. The works draw inspiration from the themes and stories found throughout his 28-year discography as one of the Philippines’ most influential rapper-songwriters.

The seven chapbooks present Pollisco’s poetry as an evolving journey—beginning with reflections on the personal self, expanding into the life of the community, and ultimately engaging with the broader socio-political realities of the nation.

Each chapbook stands on its own through its distinct themes and subject matter. Taken together, however, they invite readers to reflect more deeply on their identity, their place within their communities, the roles they play in society, and the importance of remaining aware of and engaged with issues that shape the nation.
