    IT’S TIME TO TRY DEFYING GRAVITY IN “AWITING WICKED.” GET A CHANCE TO BE A PART OF THE PHILIPPINE RENDITION OF “DEFYING GRAVITY” FROM “WICKED” AND APPEAR IN THE MUSIC VIDEO

    Filipino singers wanted! Universal Pictures Philippines wants aspiring singers from across the country to take a leap and submit your rendition of the song “Defying Gravity” from the hit musical “Wicked.” Winners will get a chance to sing the Philippines’ rendition of the song in a music video in the “Awiting Wicked” contest.

    The official Universal Pictures Philippines TikTok account (@UniversalPicsPH) has posted the  Awiting Wicked announcement and clips from the upcoming film “Wicked,” with the instrumental version of “Defying Gravity” that contestants can duet with. Entries should be tagged #AwitingWicked and entrants should set their accounts to public privacy setting so the video is visible. The promo will run from September 18 to September 29, 2024, after which thirty (30) winners will be given the chance to sing their rendition of “Defying Gravity,” and be part of the music video that will debut alongside “Wicked” as it arrives in Philippine cinemas on November 20, 2024.

    Bruno Major Beautifully Concludes World Tour in Manila

     

    “I’ve always felt very welcome here in the Philippines. I don’t know why it is that you love me here, but I want you to know that I’m extraordinarily thankful for it and I don’t take it for granted,” Bruno Major told the crowd at the PICC Plenary Hall. 

    The Philippines was the only country he went back and forth in the span of a few days. On September 7, he held his first show in Manila in the same venue wherein a full house welcomed him warmly. To follow his tour schedule, he flew to Hong Kong the very next day only to return to Manila to return for his second show here and to conclude his world tour.

    The 36-year old British singer-songwriter has gone around the world since last year with breaks few and far between. After the release of his widely acclaimed 3rd album Columbo in July 2023, he immediately began his quest to play as many cities as possible in his Tour of Planet Earth, spanning more than 40 shows, many of which were sold out. 

    Still, Manila was special to him. Bruno Major later revealed that his biggest crowd for his tour was also here. “I sold more than 7,000 tickets here. This is the most tickets I’ve sold in my life,” he said, thanking the crowd for their overwhelming appreciation.

    On his 2nd night in Manila, he made his entrance in a black tank top and red-black flare pants, a bit of a polar shift to his usual immaculate suit jacket and trousers combo. A short introduction was played and then ironically the first lines he sang were “The credits roll, you got the girl. The bad guy was defeated” from “The Show Must Goes On”.

    From then on, it was a slow and beautiful descent into the Major’s brand of sacred melancholy, the kind that goes between being despondently blue (“Fair-Weather Friend”, “Columbo”, “Places We Won’t Walk”) to being hopelessly in love (“Regent’s Park”, “Home”, “Just the Same”). The 2nd night crowd got a special insert song with the piano acoustic rendition of “Tapestry” from the 2020 album To Let A Good Thing Die.

    The audience unanimously took in each song in silent awe. It was almost theatrical how the crowd waited on his every word, respectfully taking in the music and singing along just a little to the lines that hit closest to home. 

    Bruno Major shared a few insightful anecdotes about his songs. He recounted that during soundcheck, a fan asked him what his favorite song that he wrote himself, and he thought “Strange Kind of Beautiful” was possibly the best answer. After singing “Tell Her”, he said that he wrote it when he wrote it while he and his girlfriend were having a tough time, but there’s a plot twist: they’re still together.  “Columbo” was a song he wrote about his beloved Ivory White 1981 Mercedes which he unfortunately crashed.

    “Thank you so much for opening your heart to me and my music. I will do my best to return the favor. I love you very much,” he thanked the crowd before heading into the encore with “Easily”. 

    On his Instagram post a few days after the concert, he said, “My mind is still strong but my body and soul need to rest ~ I’m going to go away for a while, to make another album. Promise me you’ll be there when I come back!!”

    Sugar Hiccup to Headline 4-City Tour in the Philippines and Singapore Next Month

    Award-winning and iconic dream pop band Sugar Hiccup will be reuniting in time for their post-30th anniversary!

    Pioneering Filipino dream-pop outfit Sugar Hiccup will embark on a Philippine tour next month to commemorate more than 30 years as a band.

    The award-winning indie quartet has announced their four-show run with stops in Manila, Singapore, Baguio, and Cebu.

    The Manila leg, which is produced by GNN Entertainment Productions and The Flying Lugaw, will feature long sets by the four-piece band, and will be supported by guest acts such as Aunt Robert, The Purest Blue, Taken By Cars, and Barbie Almalbis. The tour also partnered with Not Very Noise and John Bottles Events to bring Sugar Hiccup to Baguio and Cebu, respectively.

    Fans of Sugar Hiccup are in for a treat as the current lineup, composed of Melody del Mundo (vocals, lead guitars), Czandro Pollack (rhythm guitars), Iman Leonardo (bass), and Mervin Panganiban (drums), will be performing some of the cult favorites from their hit albums, Oracle and Womb, as well as some rarities and new recordings.

    Sugar Hiccup is one of the most iconic bands of the ‘90s alternative rock boom. Their ethereal sound, driven by shoegaze influences, dynamic drums, and high-pitched vocal stylings, opened the doors for female-fronted indie artists to embrace non-conventional forms of pop/rock music and deep-dive into the dreamier end of songwriting and production.

    Their debut album, Oracle sold more than 20,000 copies and won the Best Alternative Recording at the Awit Awards (the Philippines’ version of the Grammys), while its banner single “Five Years” earned two KATHA awards for Best Alternative Song and Best Alternative Performance by the songwriters’ organization KATHA. In 1998, the band released their sophomore album, Womb to critical acclaim.

    Raymond Lauchengco celebrates 40 years in showbiz with an anniversary show

    Singer Raymond Lauchengco celebrates 40 years in the entertainment industry with an 80s-inspired concert entitled “Just Got Lucky” at The Theatre at Solaire on November 23, 2024, Saturday, at 8 pm. Joining him on this special show are Bituin Escalante and other surprise guests.

    Raymond says, “For all of you who’ve listened to my music, and continue to listen after all these years, let me thank you by taking you back to where it all started: the 80s!”

    The singer behind hit songs such as “I Need You Back,” “So It’s You,” “Farewell” and many more heartfelt tunes, began his career as a young stage actor of Repertory Philippines. At age 18, Raymond was cast in Viva Films’ youth-oriented fiick “Bagets” which became a huge box-office hit and remains one of Philippine cinema’s most iconic movies of all time.

    Through the years, Raymond has sealed his status as one of the country’s premiere balladeers, and a distinguished director, photographer and sculptor, and award-winning recording artist and performer.

    The concert title is taken from an upbeat song that is part of the “Bagets” soundtrack.

    Raymond guarantees that the show is going to be more than a night of nostalgia. He says, “Let’s bring back some of the best ballads, OPM, and dance tunes of that decade. Come and celebrate with me. It’ll be fun!”

    For this one-night only concert, Raymond is collaborating with writer-director Waya Gallardo and musical director Marvin Querido.

    The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus stormed back into the Philippines with an explosive performance that reignited their connection with fans in Davao and Manila after an eight-year hiatus.

    The band’s comeback show on September 12, 2024, at the SM North EDSA Skydome was a sold-out spectacle, presented by PULP Live World, that confirmed their place in the hearts of Filipino rock enthusiasts. Formed in 2003 in the small town of Middleburg, Florida, the band swiftly established itself as a key player in the emo rock genre, becoming a mainstay on our playlists. Given that Filipinos are among the largest communities of emo enthusiasts, it’s no surprise that the show was a complete sell-out.

    Face Down and No Damn Regrets

    From the moment they hit the stage, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus delivered a setlist packed with their most iconic hits. The crowd was treated to a powerhouse performance of their top Spotify tracks—”Face Down,” “False Pretense,” “Your Guardian Angel,” “Damn Regret,” and “Cat and Mouse”—all from their acclaimed 2006 album Don’t You Fake It. These tracks, which have resonated with fans for years, turned the Skydome into a sea of raised fists and sing-along voices, underscoring why these songs remain fan favorites.

    The band’s commitment to fan engagement was on full display as they took interactive experiences to new heights. In a standout moment, they invited fans on stage for a lively game of “Guess That Song.” Ronnie Winter’s playful snippets of their tracks had the crowd guessing the song titles, transforming the concert into a shared celebration of their mutual passion for music. This fan-centric approach not only highlighted the band’s dedication to their supporters but also tapped into the Filipino love for interactive and participatory experiences.

    Ronnie Winter also took time to reflect on the nostalgic bond between the band and their fans. He noted that many in the crowd likely grew up listening to The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus during their high school years. This connection was further emphasized when the band covered Blink-182’s “All the Small Things,” a track that resonated with their teenage years. “You listen to us during your high school years? We wanna share with you what we listened to during our high school!”

    This gesture underscored the lasting influence of their music and created a bridge between past and present, reinforcing the deep-rooted connection they share with their audience.
    The concert’s high turnout was a clear indication of the band’s enduring popularity and the excitement surrounding their live performances, even after years away.     Star Wars: A New Hope In Concert – An Immersive Cinematic Experience

    Jedi robes, Darth Vader helmets, clone trooper uniforms and lightsabers of different colors filled the halls of The Theatre at Solaire on September 7 and 8. Star Wars fans of all ages arrived in their preferred intergalactic fashion – some content with just a simple shirt while some going all the way with their mini Wookiee and Grogu plushies. For two nights, Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert was playing, and everyone who witnessed it got an experience of a lifetime. 

    The concept of ‘film concerts’ is slowly but surely finding its niche in the Philippine concert scene. When this concert was announced, the demand was so astounding, it gave rise to three shows over the weekend. Watching an entire movie accompanied by a live orchestra could be an unusual idea at first, but wait until you experience it for yourself, and you’ll surely be singing your own praises..

    Under the baton of Maestro Gerard Salonga, the force of the 81-piece Filharmonika Orchestra played the scores composed by the legendary John Williams as the movie ran. Just like the usual theater set-up, the movie was projected on the big screen at the center of the stage. Underneath it was the orchestra, waiting on cue to play on cue.

    The Filharmonika Orchestra played seamlessly, so much that sometimes, it was easy to forget that an entire troop of people were actually there, performing live as each scene went on. It’s only when you look down and see the machinations rolling or when you hear that unmistakable drop of the beats that you’re wonderfully reminded of the fact. 

    The concert made the experience of watching Star Wars: A New Hope so immersively intense, that it induced goosebumps and a few tears at times. When the booming trumpets and horns of the main theme came in during the opening crawl, the sense of excitement was just palpable. When the strings swelled as Luke Skywalker gazed longingly at the binary sunset over the Tatooine Desert, it ushered in a mixture of melancholy and hope. There was also the thrumming thrill of the Battle of Yavin wherein the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star. Although we mostly knew the penultimate outcome, the tension was amplified a hundredfold. Lastly, the Royal Award Ceremony at the Throne Room up to the credits roll was a blast of resounding triumph.

    As a welcome bonus, Gerard Salonga and the Filharmonika Orchestra returned for an encore performance of the “Star Wars Main Theme”. As a perfect closing to the evening, the audience expressed their appreciation by giving them a standing ovation.

    Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert elevated the experience of watching a beloved classic, inspiring a newfound appreciation of its masterfully rendered soundtrack. We could all re-watch the same movie on our television screens, but the opportunity to see it with a live orchestra rarely comes by. After the concert, we’ll probably never hear the main theme the same ever again after this. Going by those perks alone, being there was worth the money and the time.

    The HSCC is an online band sensation from Australia, founded in 2017 by Arranger and Producer Constantine Delo, along with a cohort of seasoned Adelaide session musicians who got together for a lark to record their favorite songs from the 70’s and 80’s. The band’s unique blend, high-energy performance, and catchy tunes garnered viewers from Australia and abroad.  

    Following on from HSCC’s major internet success, the band now tours throughout the world to audiences far and wide. Releasing videos weekly, they perform all of pop’s greatest and most popular hits, sounding faithful to the sound of the original recording and getting praised by the original artists themselves.
