On a cool and cozy January evening, Filipino fans converged at the Mall of Asia Arena for their long-awaited musical rendezvous with Michael Buble. The Philippines has always had a special place in the Canadian singer’s heart—he even called it his home—for it is his Filipino fans that gave him his first big break.
New York a capella group Naturally 7, opened the stage with their virtuoso voices. The lack of instrumentation highlighted their vocal play: their voices mimicked the instruments that each of them acted out. They warmed up the crowd, calling on them to dance as a sort of initiation before handing the stage over to Mr. Buble.

It’s a tale not quite literally as old as time, but one could ask just about anyone about Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and get a reminiscent smile in return.
The traditional fairytale from the pen of French novelist Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont may be better known these days for its 1991 cartoon adaptation, but noone could dispute the fact that it’s a story deeply ingrained in the hearts of a generation.
With this in mind, it came as no surprise that Manila instantly began buzzing when news broke that Ovation Productions would be bringing the stage adaptation of the classic to the Cultural Center of the Philippines. On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Philippine Concerts got to sit down with some of the play’s principal cast for a chat with Hilary Maiberger (Belle), Darick Pead (Beast), James May (Cogsworth), Hassan Nazari-Robati (Lumiere), Adam Dietlein (Gaston), and Jordan Aragon (Lefou).
PHILIPPINE CONCERTS: We’re so excited to have you here in Manila! You must be a long way from home. How are you liking your visit so far?
HILARY:
We’re like a 16 hour flight away from home. It’s crazy but it’s exciting.
DARICK:
We’re basically from the opposite side of the world which is awesome, I love it. We saw the Pope pass by and we -well, I- experienced my first earthquake here!

After the high noon sun, the boys of Tycho arrived from Japan to sit down and chat with the Philippine media. Scott Hansen together with his band mates Zac Brown, Rory O’Connor and Joe Davancens were welcomed at the Solaire Resort and Casino for a cozy press conference. Here are some of the questions and answers we were able to gather.
On your previous LPs, you’ve been playing alone. How does it work for you with having a band right now?
It’s actually made it a lot easier, and more comfortable. It’s also added to the show. It feels more visceral, and makes it more enjoyable. The whole idea behind Awake was to take what we do live and take that energy and translate it into a record.
Compared to your previous releases, Awake has noticeable changes on your style. What can you say about that?
Right on the dive, Zac and I started working together in a writing capacity. We hooked up with Rory and started playing deconstructed songs. We played it differently live than on the record. That’s what we wanted to accomplish with Awake. There was a definite shift in energy and focus. We spent a lot of time at the end of the process on the arrangements, stripping things down and making the ideas more concise.

British indie-rock band The 1975 played their first arena show last January 24, 2015 at Mall of Asia Arena, the first act from MMI Live’s British Invasion Concert Series.
Released in September 2013, the self-titled debut from the Manchester boys—whose sound does nothing to represent the 1970s—produced a handful of radio-friendly hits with “Chocolate,” “Settled Down” “Sex” “Heart Out” and “Girls.” To be honest, their music made me appreciate indie-rock and synth-pop. They have the perfect young alternative rock feel. They’ve been a band for a decade, but they broke out to the mainstream only last year. They caught my attention because they know how to create distinctive music with catchy lyrics and danceable melodies.
