  • Denise Julia turns up the heat with R&B banger “B.A.D.,” featuring P-Lo

Denise Julia turns up the heat with R&B banger “B.A.D.,” featuring P-Lo

The sensual track empowers women to be confident about themselves.

Filipino R&B sensation Denise Julia returns with an upbeat banger that encourages young women to embrace their sexuality and feel confident about themselves. On “B.A.D.,” the rising phenom finds inspiration in writing an empowering track with delicate, pulsing rhythms and sensual undertones.

“The inspiration for the lyrics came about spontaneously,” shares the chart-topping siren. “I was freestyling on some beats when I came across a beat from an overseas producer based in Nigeria. We had collaborated on previous tracks, and this particular beat had a distinct R&B vibe I was searching for, and it was incredibly catchy.”

    Denise Julia

A departure from her usual style, Denise Julia’s “B.A.D.” reveals a significant step forward in terms of songwriting and production. The viral hitmaker takes pride in how the song showcases a more assured version of herself, not afraid to flesh out sprawling ideas and tackle more mature, out-of-the-box themes.

“I want B.A.D. to be the song you play when you want to feel confident, pretty, and to embrace your sexuality,” she explains. “It aligns with my goal of creating music that makes people feel beautiful and empowered, stemming from my past experiences of feeling out of place due to my appearance.”

“B.A.D.” is produced by constant collaborator JOEL from Nigeria, who has worked with the promising newcomer on her previous song “bum 2 me.” According to Denise Julia, JOEL has a knack for delivering edgy and sultry R&B music that embodies everything unassumingly cool about the genre.

Co-producers Duane, J. Greg, and Steelo came in to provide the final touches to the production, resulting in an explosive earworm with the past and present becoming more seamlessly intertwined.

The song also features rapper P-Lo, whose style and flow complement Julia’s incredible vocal chops. The “NVMD” songstress adds, “My manager, John Vincent Salcedo, knew him and reached out, and he sent over a verse. We collaborated on refining the final version, and he delivered an excellent, catchy verse that fits the song perfectly.”

Denise Julia’s new single serves as a precursor to some music-related plans in the pipeline. According to the R&B/soul newcomer, she is set to release a mini album soon, which will give a taste of what’s to come with her full-length album.

“Additionally, I have numerous shows lined up for this year,” the young songstress shares. “After taking a break to focus on the music, I’m thrilled to be back on the road and can’t wait to share the music with my fans. This mini album and the upcoming full-length album will be filled with pure R&B goodness.”

Denise Julia’s “B.A.D.” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Special thanks to Denise Julia’s manager, John Vincent Salcedo, and Carissa King, the creative director for all visuals assigned to the project.

  • Shoti reflects on Gen Z romance with new track “waiting 4 u (delulu)”

Shoti reflects on Gen Z romance with new track “waiting 4 u (delulu)”

The singer-songwriter/producer reflects on the unrealistic expectations about relationships in this new bedroom bop.

After gaining traction with his official debut track “LDR,” whose viral activity on TikTok fueled its popularity in Southeast Asia big time, Filipino bedroom pop artist Shoti wastes no time in releasing another slowcore bop that shows another emotional side.

His new single “waiting 4 u (delulu)” serves as a commentary for those individuals who find themselves in relationships without clear labels. Drawing from acoustic instrumentation with laid-back dreaminess, he delivers a candid remark about the state of young love in the time of Discord and digital nativity.

    Shoti

The breakout star provides an insightful observation about the trend prevalent among youngsters these days. “They share a deep connection and spend a lot of time together, yet they haven’t established official boyfriend-girlfriend status,” he shares. “In today’s generation, I’ve observed that many people, particularly from Gen Z, tend to have unrealistic expectations about relationships that may not align with reality. They yearn for a type of relationship that may not actually exist.”

To make things more special, Shoti penned the track in English and Cebuano, reflecting the beautiful nuances of his branding through a no-filter lens. He adds, “I compose songs spontaneously, and the Cebuano elements in my music flow naturally. I cherish its uniqueness, setting my songs apart. In the future, I plan to incorporate Filipino/Tagalog to enrich my musical expressions further.”

He also self-produced the track in the comfort of his own bedroom, doing everything on his own terms as far as creative direction is concerned. After completing the process, Shoti asks for valuable feedback from his mom and friends, who, in return, help him polish his work from the perspective of an outsider.
“I’ve always enjoyed the process of creating, writing, and recording my own songs at my own pace and space,” says the Cebu-based artist. “I take the art form seriously, and I take pride in the fact that it comes from a place of vulnerability and rawness.”

waiting 4 u (delulu)” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anton Paras reminds listeners of the enduring power of love and hope even in the face of separation via his latest single under AltG Records, “Can’t Wait.”

The song is about a guy expressing how he feels about his long-distance relationship with the love of his life. Even in long-distance relationships, I believe that at the right time, they will come together in the end,” shares Anton.

The single also showcases Anton’s versatility as an artist because of its different genre and vibe from his previous works. “This is a totally different genre from the ones I’m used to. If the outcome of this song comes out positive, I will create more songs like this one.”

  • Ben&Ben Hopes to Uplift the World with Acoustic Version of “Courage”

Ben&Ben Hopes to Uplift the World with Acoustic Version of “Courage”

Ben&Ben encourages listeners to reach for their dreams and goals in life despite dealing with personal tribulations.

Ben&Ben asserts the power of surviving personal setbacks in life with another inspiring anthem.

The Filipino folk-pop outfit dedicates the stripped-down version of their new song “Courage (acoustic version)” to the dreamers who are struggling to pull up the strength to confront an unforgiving world.

“The past few months have been mentally tough for the band, with challenges surrounding us and driving us to low points and times of discouragement,” the chart-topping band shares in a press statement. “These valleys have been the inspiration for Courage. We realized that as visceral as the feeling of being hopeless may be for us, we wanted to channel it into an uplifting piece of music because it is something a lot of people are going through now but have a hard time verbalizing.”

Out today via Sony Music Entertainment, the stripped-down number is penned by Miguel and Paolo Benjamin and produced by frequent collaborator Jean Paul Verona, who wanted to focus on a back-to-basics approach while commanding the listener’s attention in every conceivable way—from the powerful lyrics down to the warm melodies.

The multi-awarded ensemble explains, “We went back to our roots for this one, wherein we let the reverberations of the acoustic guitars envelope the harmonies we did for the vocals. We kept it simple for the first release of Courage because we wanted to get the message of the song to our listeners as soon as possible.”

Taking a confident stride back to their distinct brand of intuitive intimacy, Ben&Ben’s “Courage (acoustic version)” offers a compelling snapshot of their journey as individuals and artists, one that isn’t necessarily perfect and full of wins but always clings on to perseverance and courage in a bid to make the world a better place to live in.

Ben&Ben looks forward to recording and arranging the final version of the song in the coming weeks. According to the nine-piece collective, this is the first time in their career that they’ll be premiering the track in a form that usually only the band members hear, which is the stripped-down version.

“Then, we’ll build it up together as a band as the weeks and months go by, and you’ll be hearing more of it as it happens,” the acclaimed band adds.

Ben&Ben has recently made headlines for bagging seven nominations at the 2023 Awit Awards, including the following categories: Song of the Year, Best Performance by a Group Artist, Best Pop Recording, Best Alternative Recording, Best Traditional/Contemporary Folk Recording, and Music Video of the Year. The Paninindigan Kita act is currently on a world tour, with remaining stops in Sydney and Dubai this month.

Ben&Ben’s “Courage (acoustic version)” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

  • Rock band Dilaw is back with new song “Orasa”

Rock band Dilaw is back with new song “Orasa”

It’s been a great year for the rock band Dilaw and their music. With the success of their debut hit in 2022 with “Uhaw,” the six-piece collective from Baguio is undoubtedly enjoying its time in the limelight. The band is back with the release of a new single titled “Orasa” under Warner Music Philippines. With its raw sound and empathetic lyrics, it’s a piece that even casual fans will love at first listen.

Before “Orasa” was published on digital streaming platforms, the band had already performed the song in live gigs. In fact, many fans have already memorized the song and continue to rack up streams on digital platforms.  “Our fans are great, and they support any new music we perform or introduce. ‘Orasa’ has a chanty and catchy chorus, and I loved seeing the fans catch the melody and sing-along even without the song being released,” lead guitarist Leon Altomonte shares.

Recently, Orasa’s official music video has been released and has garnered impressive reactions from YouTube viewers. With vivid colors that can be seen through the band’s funky sense of fashion, the personality of each member shines throughout the video. We can also see a couple slowly entering a museum-like room with symbols representing something in their relationship.

To recall, Dilaw – an indie rock band formed in Baguio – reached their commercial breakthrough with the hit “Uhaw” and its re-released version “Uhaw (Tayong Lahat)” culled from the eclectic debut EP titled “Sansinukob.” Impressively, the latter gained the record on Spotify for the biggest single-day streams for an OPM song, peaked at #1 on the Viral-50 Philippines playlist, and made it to the #5 Global Viral playlist in March 2023. Not only that, the song was able to top the Billboard Philippines Songs for three consecutive weeks.

A testament to Filipinos and our love for music, it was easy for us to relate to “Uhaw” and have such passionate feelings for someone. Moreover, the two versions that have been released seem to have different appeals that people can’t get enough of. Inspired and influenced by blues and funky tunes, Dilaw’s musicality is something familiar yet fresh to our ears. Notably, they have also been included on the NME 100 as “one of the most essential emerging artists worldwide” in 2023.

Excitingly, the band’s latest single has the same theme — love. Although, “Orasa” focuses more on how bittersweet it is. It has a repetitive sound and steady rhythm, but the choir chants account for the fullness of the song. “Tungkol siya sa mga na-witness kong nadededz na pag-ibig, yung malapit na mag-break,” vocalist and songwriter Dilaw Obero explains. On why the song is titled that way, he adds, “Kapag andun ka kasi sa sitwasyon na yun, pakiramdam mo lahat paulit-ulit lang — parang binabali-baliktad lang na orasa bawat araw.”

Rhythm guitarist and composer Vie Dela Rosa also notes that the song is reminiscent of a toxic relationship. “Yung kahit ganun, gusto mo pa rin na andun ka.” Despite frustrations, the song carries a resilient hope or desire for someone’s return that perseveres through life’s twists and turns.

Now being received by the general public with its release on all digital streaming platforms, the band members of Dilaw want to share their thoughts on “Orasa” and their message to its listeners.

Dilaw was originally an alternative hip-hop duo consisting of singer-songwriter Dilaw Obero (vocals) and guitarist-instrumentalist Vie Dela Rosa. Eventually, the group expanded into a full indie rock collective with the addition of Wayne Dela Rosa (bass guitar), Leon Altomonte (guitar), En Altomonte (keyboards, synths), and Tobi Samson (drums).

On October 3, Dilaw and the band’s home label, Warner Music Philippines, will hold an intimate and exclusive “Di Ilaw Sa Gabing Mapanglaw” to celebrate the release with stripped-down performances with a string quartet. With attendees composed of fellow OPM artists, social media influencers, brand partners, and members of the media, it is expected that more and more people will continue to know the band and acknowledge them for their wonderful music.

Club Mild confronts past mistakes and regrets on new single “Sun Gazer”

Previously known as M1LDL1FE, the Singaporean alt-pop trio, Club Mild, embraces the next chapter of their music career with a balance of rhythm and introspection.

Singapore-based indie pop trio Club Mild confronts impermanence with regret and meaninglessness on their latest single, “Sun Gazer.” Weaving a tapestry of introspection that resonates on multiple levels, the indie pop anthem combines vivid lyrical metaphors with funk guitars and pulsating electronic beats—a musical ode to facing mortality, embracing meaninglessness, and the overwhelming power of being the author of your own life.

According to David Siow, the band bassist, “Sun Gazer” was inspired by the feeling of being wracked with regrets that you end up “going around in circles” and “contemplating about bad life choices.”

Siow adds, “At the same time, you worry about making the same mistakes in the future. This back-and-forth between past regrets and fear of the future overwhelms you. It’s like staring at the sun, thinking you’ll find safety if you can find the edges. You end up in this hollow state of “not living”. Yeah, it’s about that, but with dancing.”

With a chorus that beckons, “I wanna go back and undo the things I’ve done,” the song captures the sentiment of being paralyzed by the weight of past mistakes. But amidst this introspection lies a spark of hope, a yearning to transcend the confines of regret and find forgiveness within.

The song is written and performed by Club Mild, and produced by Malcolm Besley, a record producer, songwriter, and mix engineer who is also the drummer of Northeast Party House, a Melbourne-based electronic indie band.

“We’ve always been fans of this band called Northeast Party House; we even covered one of their songs once,” shares Siow. “So when Paddy found out that their drummer, Malcolm Besley, was their main producer, we reached out, did the Zoom calls, and got to work. Malcolm is brilliant; he managed to make all of the elements of Sun Gazer really slap!”

Formerly known as M1LDL1FE, the eclectic Singaporean band has performed in the Philippines twice, sharing co-headliner billing with Deafheaven and Delta Sleep on 2018’s All Of The Noise and performing as one of the guest international acts at last year’s GNN Year End Show in 123 Block.

James Arthur announces new album, Bitter Sweet Love

Following his recent return with new tracks ‘Blindside’ & ‘A Year Ago’, James Arthur today announces his fifth, brand new studio album Bitter Sweet Love – out January 26th, 2024 on Columbia Records.

As well as featuring the two recently released singles, Bitter Sweet Love is James back to his very best, producing thirteen bites of world-class music. After being on stage, it struck him how his fifth album should sound. A sold-out crowd was singing along to his hits, immersed in the emotion that James could hear in his own voice.

Within days of the tour ending in the States, James began sessions with different producers to see who could click with his vision. His final stop was in L.A. with Steve Solomon, with whom he co-wrote his 2016 megahit ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’.

Back in Britain, James attempted to write with more producers, but none came close to his bond with Steve, who flew over to finish the album at Miloco Studios in South London last summer, and produce a mature body of work, full of depth and oozing the impeccable songwriting quality that has defined James’s esteemed career to date.

The Middlesbrough-born, recent Brit Billion-certified artist has scored 4 top 10 albums, with 2016’s Back From The Edge hitting the Number 1 spot and over his career has collaborated with the likes of Anne-Marie, Sigala, Rudimental, Marshmello & many more.

James is one of the world’s biggest streaming artists, with over 38 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ became his breakthrough hit in the US. It was officially the UK’s most-streamed song in 2016 and has gone on to be enjoyed via 4 billion streams while the song’s official video has achieved 1.5 billion views on YouTube. Earlier this year, the track became his first RIAA Diamond Single with 10 million certified units – making James one of just 100 recipients of an RIAA Diamond Single certification in the program’s history.

Other huge hit singles include: ‘Impossible’, ‘Can I Be Him’, ‘Sun Comes Up’, ‘Naked’, ‘Empty Space’, ‘Rewrite The Stars’, ‘Falling Like the Stars’, ‘Train Wreck’ and ‘Lasting Lover’, which are all certified platinum records. The song ‘Cars Outside’ is currently becoming another global hit for James.

Back from the Edge was released on October 28, 2016, and entered the UK Albums Chart at #1. James’ last album, 2021’s It’ll All Make Sense In The End, was a lockdown project recorded at home that leaned heavily on programmed beats.

“The more albums you make and the more success you have, the more the pressure tends to be upon you. But I genuinely felt like a kid again, just making music I loved, not worried about trying to please everyone.”
