In a time when nostalgia is trending harder than ever and audiences are hungry for the music that raised them, Edgar “Bobot” Mortiz stands right in the middle of it all. He isn’t chasing trends. He’s reminding us why the classics never needed to go out of style in the first place.
Two years ago, as he marked his 70th birthday, Mortiz delivered on a long-held personal promise. He released Goin’ Standard, an all-standards vinyl album of songs either originated or made famous by the one and only Frank Sinatra. It wasn’t a comeback for the cameras. It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment for a man who started as a teenage singing champion on Tawag ng Tanghalan at just 13 years old, became one half of the iconic “Vi and Bot” love team with Vilma Santos, and later reinvented himself as one of Philippine television’s most influential directors and comedy masters.
The album was pure passion project. Eight tracks of smooth, lived-in vocals: “All My Tomorrows,” “Somewhere In Your Heart,” “How Do You Keep the Music Playing,” “You and Me (We Wanted It All),” “You Turned My World Around,” “You Will Be My Music,” “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,” and the swaggering closer “That’s Life.” His voice, gentle, familiar, still carrying that cool breeze of the 1970s crooner, glides through every note like someone who never really left the music, even when the spotlight moved on.
Then, this past June, he took it to the stage for the very first time as a solo concert artist. Backed by the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Rodel Colmenar, Goin’ Standard came alive. The night was packed. The reception was pure love. People didn’t just show up, they stayed, they felt it, and they left wanting more.
So he’s doing it again.
