  • Clark Aurora Music Fest: A Two-Day OPM Extravaganza

Clark Aurora Music Fest: A Two-Day OPM Extravaganza

If you werenโ€™t in Clark Global City, Pampanga on April 16 and 17, you might have missed out on one of the most fun you would ever get to have this summer. Presented by EP!C Events, the Clark Aurora Music Fest featured some of the hottest Filipino acts and bands including December Avenue, Ben & Ben, Kamikazee, Parokya ni Edgar and Ely Buendia. The two-day music festival drew in an estimated total of 120,000 people who jumped and partied tirelessly. On center stage, bands played one by one, the stage with full-on spotlights, smoke machines, a disco ball and a giant LED screen.ย  On the side was a scenic view of hot air balloons floating amidst the sunset until the night sky. Nothing quite like it, to be honest.ย

The first day of the festival had a more chill, youthful vibe, featuring buzzing acts who are popular with the Gen-Z. Soft, acoustic ballads laden with bittersweet falsettos were the eveningโ€™s soundtrack. Amazingly, the fifty-thousand-strong crowd was heartily singing along to each artist.

First up was the eighteen-year old Cebu-based musician mrld, also known as Meriel De Jesus, whose presence immediately excited the crowd. She performed โ€œLigayaโ€, โ€œIkaw Pa Rinโ€ and โ€œAn Art Gallery Could Never Be As Unique As Youโ€.

Lola Amour turned the tables with their refreshing mix of pop, rock and funk. The band, armed with their brass instruments and witty lyrical quips, performed  โ€œPwede Baโ€, โ€œdahan-dahanโ€ and โ€œFallenโ€.

Next on the spotlight was another talented singer/songwriter Adie who mesmerized the crowd with songs like โ€œDungawโ€, โ€œParalumanโ€ and โ€œTahananโ€. He was joined by Janine Berdin for their collab track โ€œMahikaโ€.

When it was Arthur Neryโ€™s turn on stage, he received a lot of screams. Hailing from Cagayan de Oro, the suave singer stood out with his smooth falsettos.ย  โ€œHigaโ€, โ€œIsa Langโ€ and โ€œPagsamoโ€ were some of the songs he performed that evening.

As the night grew deeper, band December Avenue opened their set with a question, โ€œAnong level of pain ang gusto niyo?โ€ While that initially seemed to be a joke, we soon discovered that it really wasnโ€™t. The alternative rock band that has been in the industry since 2007ย  is known for their heartrendingly sad songs of cinematic proportions. When they performed that night, they captivated a whole sea of people to sing along with (extreme) feelings to songs likeย  โ€œBulongโ€ โ€œKung Di Rin Lang Ikawโ€ and โ€œHuling Sandaliโ€.

Folk pop band Ben & Ben was up for the finale and as always, they made it worth everyoneโ€™s time. Fireworks decorated the midnight sky while โ€œLangyang Pag-ibigโ€ burst into the airwaves. All nine members were visibly ecstatic to play for the crowd, thanking them for staying until the late hours just to see them play. The band also played an unreleased song โ€œCometsโ€ which reflects the musings of a lost love.

The second day of Clark Aurora Music Fest was when they brought out the electric guitars and large amps. The acts for the evening were the mainstays of many millennialsโ€™ playlist when they were younger.

In the afternoon, the show opened with pop-punk/emo bands Lunar Lights and Written in the Stars.

By evening, Silent Sanctuary, armed with their string instruments, took the stage. In an instant, the crowd became a huge karaoke wave. The band played a handful of songs from their 2007 album Fuchsiang Pag-ibig which launched them to mainstream popularity with songs like โ€œ14โ€, โ€œKundimanโ€ โ€œReboundโ€ and  โ€œIkaw Lamangโ€. In the middle of their set, frontman Sarkie Sarangay announced that he was looking for a certain person. Apparently, this person contacted them beforehand to ask permission to propose to his girlfriend. The couple got engaged in the middle of the crowd, with spotlights upon them.

Spongecola had a lot of surprises under their sleeves. While anyone would expect them to just play music, Yael Yuzon did a lot more than that โ€“ he was all about making a connection with the audience. He pulled in a crowd of fifty to sixty thousands with his theatrics. Seeing him introduce a song felt like watching a musical with a strong narrative. The crowd was more than willing to humor him as they jumped around and sang excitedly to the classic Spongecola songs likeย  โ€œTuliroโ€ โ€œBitiwโ€ โ€œTambayโ€ and the ever favorite โ€œJeepneyโ€.

Leave it to Kamikazee to be the wildcard in any concert. Jay Contreras was a radiant ball of energy onstage as he jumped high in the air, did headstands, threw his clothes (jacket and shoes) to the crowd, stripper-danced and climbed up the side railings. (Yes, all those things happened during their set.) The audience sang along to โ€œUnang Tikimโ€, โ€œMartyr Nyeberaโ€, โ€œHuling Sayawโ€ and โ€œNardaโ€. As a bonus, they gave in to the crowdโ€™s encore request with โ€œDoo Bidooโ€.

Mayonnaise also made their mark during their set as they revved up the crowd with their hard-hitting songs like โ€œBakit Part 2โ€, โ€œTayo na Lang Dalawaโ€ and the resurging smash hit โ€œJopayโ€. The band has been celebrating their 20th anniversary by going on tours across the Philippines. Theyโ€™re currently in Canada.ย

The much-awaited OPM titans Parokya ni Edgar was a joy to watch. For their introduction, Chito Miranda said in his mild-mannered tone, โ€œdahil late na, ito na po ang last song naminโ€. Thankfully, it was a joke. The band played an engaging set including some of their most popular hits like โ€œBuloyโ€, โ€œPara Saโ€™yoโ€, โ€œHaranaโ€ and โ€œYour Songโ€. One highlight of the evening was when Chito also called two people from the audience to perform โ€œBagkasanโ€ with him. The two fans nailed Gloc 9โ€™s and Francis Mโ€™s parts, much to everyoneโ€™s surprise. The band also took time to thank everyone who supported their guitarist Gab Chee Kee who was hospitalized recently due to complications caused by lymphoma. For their closing, Kamikazee joined them onstage to perform โ€œHalagaโ€.

The last act for the festival was Ely Buendia. The Eraserheads frontman performed a number of the bandโ€™s best hits including โ€œSpoliariumโ€, โ€œPare Koโ€, โ€œOverdriveโ€  and โ€œMagasinโ€ which unequivocally got everyone singing. He also revealed that the Heads have been practicing for their upcoming US tour. For the grand finale, he played โ€œAng Huling El Bimboโ€ as fireworks bloomed in the background.

Clark Aurora Music Fest was a great weekend experience. Seeing some of the rising OPM stars as well as the great OPM legends was worth the time and the trip. Hoping next year will be even grander!

    Special thanks to EP!C Events!

“Natapos ko ang kanta in less than an hour. Imagine the emotions I put on this song and sana magustuhan nyo ang kanta. The message of the song is about grief and loss. It’s also a song of hope na whatever happens in our lives maraming challenges and difficulties, maraming reasons to move forward at kakayanin naten.”

During the media conference, he told the press who were there the story of how he had lost his father and the emotional pain he had experienced as a result of losing a loved one. Regarding the creative process of writing and composing ‘Lisan’, he says that “I believe pag nasa peak tayo ng emotions, nakakapag come up tayo ng magagandang songs. I wrote ‘Lisan‘ during the first night ng burol ni papa. For this new single, parang tinulungan ako ni papa na ibigay yung mga right lyrics and right notes.

Vilmark expresses his gratitude and awe for being given another opportunity to perform his music on a massive scale with the support of GMA Music. “I’m just really blessed with the support and assistance that binibigay sa akin ng buong GMA Music family, I really wanted to release this song kasi I dedicate this to my father and I believe ito โ€˜yung perfect timing sa career ko to do something for him.โ€

Vilmark has high hopes that everybody who has the opportunity to listen to his music will be able to empathize with him and understand what he is going through. When he was competing in The Clash, his mother and father never missed an opportunity to cheer him on and show their support. It is only right that he should dedicate this song to one of the most significant persons in his life.

K-Verse Brings Together Taeyeon, The Boyz, and aespa for an Ultimate Concert

Three top K-Pop acts in one show: K-Verse delivered a concert that saw Taeyeon, The Boyz, and aespa take the stage in one night.

With an aim to promote the spirit of togetherness in support of each fandom while maintaining each other’s identity as a fan and with a promise to create a space where fans are the number one priority in knowing who they want to see and what theyโ€™d like to experience, K-Verse: The Ultimate Pop Universe brought together Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, The Boyz, and aespa for a one-night-only concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on April 11, 2023.

Presented by MakeitLive, Content Sandbox, FangirlAsia, A Planet Entertainment, and Sinchunoung, the concert marked a special event for each fandom with it being aespa’s first event in the Philippines, and Taeyeon and The Boyz’s comeback event in almost five years. Regardless of their fandom, Filipino SONEs, TheBs, and MYs welcomed all artists with resounding cheers and support.

    Next Level Stages with aespa

aespa opened K-Verse with their debut digital single, “Black Mamba,” which was first released in 2020 and later included as one of the tracks of their 2022 second extended play, Girls. The crowd was clearly thrilled to welcome Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning to the Philippine concert stage as they cheered loudly. Following “Black Mamba,” the girl group performed “Illusion,” a pre-release track from Girls.

As the girls made their formal introductions, the audience erupted in enthusiastic cheers. They also kindly responded to inquiries regarding their time spent in the Philippines. They continued with performances of “Life’s Too Short”, their first song fully recorded in English, and “Lingo”.

Karina, who celebrated her birthday on April 11, received a beautiful present from her Philippine MYs in the form of a banner project and a birthday song. “You guys are my gift. I’m very thankful that you guys have given me a moment that is such a precious present and gift for me. Thank you so much,” Karina said. On Twitter, the K-Pop artist also shared a photo of the cake that her fans prepared for her on her special day. A special surprise was also given to Philippine MYs as the girls gave a sneak peek of their upcoming comeback, MY WORLD, which is set for release on May 8.

“First of all being here in the Philippines with all the members makes me really happy. And like the Philippine weather, you are so passionate. I really had a wonderful time here in the Philippines,” Ningning said, expressing also her love for the food in the country. Giselle echoed Ningning’s love for Filipino food and relayed her gratitude to the fans for coming to see them at K-Verse. “I was excited to come to the Philippines for the first time. We really enjoyed the food as Ningning said. Thank you, thank you so much for coming here tonight, being with us, and cheering us on. We hope we can come back soon, hopefully for our concert,” she said.

Like Giselle, Winter expressed her desire to return to the country and hold another performance. “It’s such a shame that we have a short time here in the Philippines. When we come back for a performance, you guys are gonna come with us, right? We thank you all for spending your precious time with us. We will make sure that aespa will come back,” she said.

aespa closed their set with their 2021 hit song, “Next Level”, which received the Digital Song Bonsang Award at the 2022 Golden Disc Awards and which gave the girl group the Best Dance Performance Award for a Female Group at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

A Thrilling Ride with The Boyz at K-Verse

The Boyz took the stage next, making their return to the Philippine concert stage in almost five years. The boy group, composed of Sangyeon, Jacob, Younghoon, Hyunjae, Juyeon, Kevin, New, Q, Ju Haknyeon, Sunwoo, and Eric, first came to the country in 2018 as part of the star-studded MBC Show Champion in Manila lineup.

Kicking off their comeback stage in the Philippines, the boy group performed “Roar” from their newest album, Be Awake. They then proceeded to greet The Bs with their trademark greeting and say hello to them individually. Sangyeon, Jacob, Younghoon, Hyunjae, Juyeon, Kevin, New, Q, Ju Haknyeon, Sunwoo, and Eric went back to performance mode and took the stage with back-to-back performances of “Maverick” and “The Stealer” from their Maverick and Chase albums, respectively.

Sunwoo received an advance birthday greeting from Philippine The Bs. The rapper showed his appreciation to the fans by bowing and saying thank you. He called the sweet gesture of fans a big present for him, highly appreciative of the birthday song. Sunwoo turned 23 years old on April 12.

After fired-up performances, The Boyz made a sweet return to the stage with a fun-filled performance of “Salty”, a track from their 2020 album, Reveal. They then came closer to fans, went around the stage, and interacted with fans in “Dancing Till We Drop”.

The boy group also made a declaration to return to the Philippines for a solo concert. “Philippines, make some noise if you want The Boyz back here,” Eric said, earning loud screams from the crowd.

They definitely turned everyone at the venue The Bs with an exhilarating stage of “Thrill Ride” from the Thrill-ing albumโ€”closing their incredible set.

    Beshie Taeyeon Returns to Manila

The final performer of K-Verse, King Taeyeon made her highly-awaited return to the local concert scene on April 11. The leader of Girls’ Generation got The Big Dome cheering in delight as she emerged on stage with her opening song, “I”. Life was truly a beauty as she followed it up with “Toddler”. The concert marked the first time that the singer performed “Toddler” live for her Philippine SONEs.

Greeting fans, Taeyeon admitted that it truly has been a while since she came to the country for a concert. But despite the long wait, her beshies are more than happy to welcome her back with their loudest cheers and banners.

Taeyeon acknowledged the passionate energy of Philippine SONEs. “Your reaction is so hot that it seems I really need to come back for a solo concert,” she said, a statement that garnered loud agreement from the crowd. She also shared that she is in the midst of preparing for a concert. “So if you guys wait for a little bit, I’ll make sure to come back and greet you all once again,” she added.

Taeyeon continued her performances with “Set Myself on Fire”, “Four Seasons”, and “What Do I Call You”. She then took a moment to once again express her gratitude for the cheers and reiterated her promise to come back.

Also for the first time, Taeyeon showed the Philippine crowd a live performance of “INVU” from her third studio album of the same name released in 2022.

A truly star-studded affair that brought together three of the best K-Pop acts, K-Verse made the dreams of MYs, The Bs, and SONEs come true with an ultimate show that saw aespa debut on the local concert stage and welcome The Boyz and Taeyeon back to Manila.
