  • The Fray expects a wild crowd tonight at the Big Dome

“We are doing this because we have something to say” “each one of us has been committed to each other” these what the band said when they’re asked why they’re still together during their press conference yesterday at the Crowne Plaza

It took them nearly 10 years before planning to do a concert in the Philippine and after waiting for 6 months, The Fray is ready to take the Manila stage tonight at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Fray, sat down with Philippine Concerts and other members of the press before heading to their Meet and Greet/CD signing session.
Many of us has started hearing of a band called The Fray when “How to Save a Life” became somewhat of an anthem in American TV shows, most specifically in Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve never actually gotten into that show, but the TV station insisted on using that song as the official background music for the show’s commercial which irrevocably played every 15 minutes. Strangely though, it never got into my nerves like all the other repetitive mainstream music. If anything, it had a sort of soothing effect.

  • Big Bang: Beyond Alive

    Big Bang: Beyond Alive

    big-bang-alive-tour-manila

As early as the afternoon, VIPs, how Big Bang fans are called, were already beginning to flock the surroundings of the Mall of Asia Arena. The booths outside, which featured the band’s official merchandise and some of their advertised brands, were raided by fans. Their life-sized cardboard representations alone proved to be quite an attraction to the frantic audience that was just waiting to storm the arena to see their much loved Korean boy band.

Even with the overflow of foreign acts that passed Manila, Big Bang’s Alive tour remained to be one of the highly anticipated events of the year as the band makes their way around unchartered territories for their first ever world tour. K-pop, which has spread its influence over people like wildfire, definitely burned its influence in the Philippines, as the genre infectiously catches more and more Filipino fans who ardently and painstakingly make the effort to learn their language just to sing along to their songs and understand their raw interviews.

Since their debut in 2006, T.O.P., G-Dragon, Daesung, Seungri and Taeyang have always stood out among others not just because of their undeniable good looks, but also with their trendsetting fashion sensibilities and their ability to compose their own songs. Over the years, they have proved to be capable as both musicians and performers by creating their own brand of hiphop. The band is now one of the most well known Korean acts across the world, inspiring a cult-like following from most of its fan base.

The 24th of October was marked as their first stop in Manila. Surely enough, no rain, no distance, no threat of bankruptcy was going to keep their fans from seeing the show. Outside, long queues of people were frantically waiting for the gates to open. The VIPs, proudly wearing crown headbands and strutting in outlandish fashion, eagerly waited to get in among thousands of others. On their hands were meticulously designed banners that express their appreciation for the five boys and the official Big Bang crown light sticks. Their imagination, running wild. Their anticipation, just so obviously soaring.

  • Bazooka Rocks the Metro

    Bazooka Rocks the Metro

Guest Post by Isabel R. Matias

    bazooka-rocks-the-maine

We live for the moments that truly make us feel alive. September 30, 2012 proved to be one of those extraordinary feats.

That last Sunday of September marked the first annual indoor music festival in the country. Bazooka Rocks Festival, as it is called, showcased three local and eight international acts in a span of over twelve hours. True to its name, the festival was an explosion of energy, sound and color.

As the preparations were made, attendees counted down the days. With each second the clock ticked, they were closer to the festival date. They were so eager that by the time the hour of the show arrived, the crowd was like a time bomb ready to explode.

The SMX Convention Center was the right venue, as it provided ample space for the concept of the festival. The stage was situated at the heart of the two connected halls – it was “one massive pit” – as the official poster advertised. Arcade booths, kiosks selling food, drinks, and booze, merchandise stalls, an eating area with school chairs, cellphone charging stations, and even a giant inflatable slide decorated the halls.

Before each band would dominate the stage, a countdown would take place, only reminding the crowd that they were minutes away from seeing their favorite band perform. Every time the musicians stepped or ran on stage, the crowd erupted in a frenzy.

At the outset were homegrown talents such as Penguin, Robin Nievera and Salamin. The audience was given a taste of local skill before foreign-cultivated artistry hit the stage.

At noon, Avastera took the stage. The Australian-based musicians have gone a long way since they released their EP, “The Clocks Have Ticked Too Long” early this year. For a band to have only released an EP and tour in international shores speaks volumes; they’ve achieved so much in just a span of a few months and are sure to take the world by stage one continent at a time.
