    Rebelution Live in Manila

Rebelution fired up Manila’s summer concert season with sweltering sounds of roots reggae last April 11 at the SM North EDSA Skydome. It was everything one could expect from a reggae gig: everyone’s senses were filled and lit up with the spirit of Rebelution’s songs such as “Safe and Sound”, “More Love”, “So High,” and “Bright Side of Life”.

A Taste of Hip Hop from Epik High

South Korean hip-hop group Epik High recently visited Manila last April 18 for their Epik High Concert Parade at the SM North EDSA Skydome.

    Epik High Live in Manila

Tablo, Mithra, and DJ Tukutz opened the night with songs “Encore,” “Fly,” “Up,” and “Burj Khalifa.”

During their spiels, Tablo commented, “It’s really hot here! In Korea, it’s still a little winterish. We were surprised when we got here! I think it’s too hot, we need to cool down a bit.”

    epik-high-manila-2015

The trio then proceeded to sing tracks “It’s Cold,” “Umbrella,” “Map The Soul,” and “Happen Ending.”

Hundreds of Highskools (fanclub name) sang their heart out when the group sang “Love Love Love” and Tablo’s version of Big Bang Taeyang’s “Eyes, Nose, Lips.”

    epik-high-manila-concert

    epik-high-live-at-sm-skydome

The party was only getting started as Tablo shouted, “[You’re all] totally great! Hot is better than cold! It’s perfectly hot here! I love it! Should we get hotter?”

Fans jumped up and down when they performed “Kill This Love,” “High Technology,” “One,” and “New Beautiful.”

    epik-high-concert-2015

It was also a sight to see DJ Tukutz dance solo! We also can’t help but giggle at Tablo’s cute antics when he played with DJ Tukutz’s DJ set. And we also can’t forget how Mithra poured water over himself. Must have been really hot, eh? Hot enough for the three to also pour water over the audience! Highskools don’t seem to mind it, too.

Epik High then sang their last song for the night “Fan.” But fans won’t go home without hearing their latest single “Born Hater.” The fans chanted “Born Hater!” “Born Hater!”

A few seconds after, Tablo, Mithra, and DJ Tukutz came back on stage to finally sing the most anticipated song of the night “Born Hater.” They ended the night my personal favorite “Don’t Hate Me.”

    epik-high-sm-skydome

The intimate venue is really what made the concert even more special. It felt like one private party for all Filipino Highskools, we can’t wait till the boys visit the country again!

  • Hope Personified: The Script Inspires Manila Anew

Hope Personified: The Script Inspires Manila Anew

April 17th, 2015. The Mall of Asia Arena was teeming with fans who had waited weeks upon weeks for the return of Dublin-based trio, The Script.

Before long, the arena was plunged into darkness to deafening screams as the band made their entrance from the audience area flanked by carriers of huge green flags. The time had come to Paint the Town Green.

    the-script-live-in-manila-2015-moa-arena

Frontman Danny O’Donoghue led the audience in a left-right-and-center screaming match that left ears ringing before launching into Hail, Rain or Sunshine and transitioning to the massive hit, Breakeven.

“It’s a big big honor to be here again!” Danny told the crowd, “You guys have made us feel like the biggest f&%king band on the planet!”

Manila’s warm reception outdid itself for the song Superheroes, dedicated by the band to “anybody who’s going through hard times right now.” It was to no one’s surprise that everyone knew and sang every word at the top of their lungs. What was a breath of fresh air was the collective feeling of nothing but pure positivity that the song’s message elicited from the crowd.

    the-script-live-at-mall-of-asia-arena

“You guys look absolutely gorgeous.” said a smiling Danny after orchestrating an old fashioned singalong for We Cry. Notable at this point of the show was If You Could See Me Now, a song known to be dedicated to the late father of Danny as well as guitarist Mark Sheehan’s parents. The band’s moving delivery was bounced back to them by an enthralled audience who would not be daunted even by the fastest of rap segments.

Mark then shared a bit of advice with future songwriters in the audience:

“Be careful what songs you write,” he warned in front of screenshots from Man on a Wire onscreen. “Cause you’ll have to make a music video for it. I’m really really scared of heights and this song is inspired by that fear, that irrational fear of heights.”

    the-script-mark-sheehan

    the-script-manila-concert-2015

The picture of Irish grit, the band dropped jaws and raised eyebrows for a moment by addressing the audience in the front to have security lighten up. “Are you guys okay there in the front? Cause security is looking like a pain the ass.” they said to appreciative cheers. “Let them enjoy themselves. We came all this way to have a good time!”

Danny continued to shake things up by issuing a dare to the crowd– “Call an ex and let us speak to them.”

Phones practically flew onstage as front row members scrambled to call their former flames. One lucky fan was chosen and Danny swept up the phone to speak with him and asked him to stay on the line for the song Nothing.

“Many people here think you’re an a$&hole.” he mischievously told the boy on the phone. The final nail in the proverbial coffin– Danny ended the song and the call by having the entire arena yell “Goodbye, a&$hole!” — truly a moment we never imagined we’d see that night.

A brief interval brought the band to the B-Stage where they stood in a circle to perform Never Seen Anything “Quite Like You” and The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.

“You guys have given us –no joke– one of the best nights of our tour!” intimated Danny before leaving the stage. “That’s the power of music, it’s there for you no matter what.”

    the-script-live-in-manila-2015

Just as fans began to wonder where he had gone, yelling erupted from the lower box section of the Arena as Danny reappeared in the area. Camera in hand, he waded through the swarming crowd to sing You Won’t Feel a Thing. He made his way back to the stage soon enough for the band’s faux farewell. The audience shared the moment like an inside joke and sang the “ooh’s” of It’s Not Right For You with cellphones held alight.

The Script soon obliged and returned to the stage for another set of songs. When the time came for No Good in Goodbye, Danny requested everyone present to “use your phones for something different. So many people spend their lives on their phones and don’t look up. For this one song, let’s live in the moment.”

    the-script-live-in-manila-crowd

And live in the moment Manila did. Thousands of tiny lights illuminated the MOA Arena for The Script’s final minutes onstage to create a little galaxy all our own, if only for a while.

To groans (and possibly tears) all around, the band bid their fans farewell. Dismay was quickly replaced with hope as they swore it would not be another two years before The Script returns to paint Manila green once again.

  • Four of the Best KPOP acts in one Epic Show

Four of the Best KPOP acts in one Epic Show

Super Junior, Girl’s Generation, BTOB, and Red Velvet headline the first Best of Best KPOP Concert in the Philippines.

    snsd-live-at-philippine-arena suju-live-in-manila

One of K-pop’s biggest names, Super Junior and Girl’s Generation, along with two other promising groups, BTOB and Red Velvet, become the first ever K-pop acts to perform in the newly established Philippine Arena last April 12. Definitely one of the most surreal experiences for all Kpop fans. From the exciting pre-event activities to the unbelievable main show, I felt like I was transported to South Korea. Philippine Arena was already buzzing when I arrived at 5:00pm. There were activities and fun games outside the venue, amazing food stands and thousands of excited KPop fans.

    red-velvet-live-in-manila btob-live-in-manila

SM Entertainment’s rookie girl group Red Velvet opened the night with “Ice Cream Cake.” Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and newest member Yeri, were welcomed with screams and fan chants despite debuting only last August 2014.

Wendy, with her undeniable aegyo (cuteness,) returned the warm reception, “It’s our first time in the Philippines! Thank you so much, guys! It’s great! You guys are great!”

    red-velvet-philippine-arena

The girls also sang songs from their album, starting with “Somethin Kinda Crazy,” followed by “Candy,” and then ended with their debut song “Happiness”.

Next in line was Cube Entertainment’s seven-member boy group BTOB (also known as Born to Beat.) Eunkwang, Minhyuk, Changsub, Hyunsik, Peniel, Il-hoon, Sungjaemade their Filipina Melodies (their official fan club name) swoon with songs “Thriller,” “Second Confession,” and “Winter’s Tale.”

    born-to-beat-live-at-philippine-arena

    btob-live-at-philippine-arena

Youngest Sungjae also shouted “Mahal kita, Philippines!” While Il-hoon “thrilled” their fans when he said “I’ll make you happy tonight!”

The group ended their stage with hits song “Beep Beep,” and “WOW.”

Screams again filled the arena as Girl’s Generation went up the stage. The girls started with the Japanese version of “Mr. Taxi” and the Korean versions of “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)” and “Hoot.”

    girls-generation-live-at-philippine-arena

Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun wore matching pink dresses. The girls last performed in the Philippines, with former member Jessica, last January 2013 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. This is the first time the group performed as an eight-membered group in the country.

    girls-generation-manila-concert-2015

    girls-generation-live-in-manila

Girl’s Generation also took the fans back in time when they performed their earlier songs “Kissing You” and “Complete.”

Tiffany attested, “It’s been a long time since we sang “Complete” for you guys.”

    girls-generation-live-in-manila-2015

Seohyun then thanked the Filipino SONEs, “The energy you’re giving us, we’ll be taking back home with us. “Thank you so much! We love you!”

The group ended with another hit song “Mr. Mr.”

    super-junior-live-in-manila-2015

Last but definitely not the least, Super Junior finally (and literally) goes up the stage while singing “Shirt” followed by “This is Love” and “Evanesce.”

A sea of Sapphire Blue light sticks filled the arena, enough for member KangIn to exclaim, “I thought this was a Super Show!”

    super-junior-manila-concert-2015

Fans then chanted “SS6! SS6!” Asking the group to do another Super Show in the country soon.

Eight out of the thirteen members performed for the ELFs present at the Philippine Arena, namely Leeteuk, Heechul, Kangin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun.

The members showed off their usual goofy selves on stage, while telling their fans how much they missed them.

    Heechul shouted, “Mahal kita!”

    Leeteuk also greeted, “Mabuhay Philippine!”

Eunhyuk then added, “Really, long time no see!”

While Siwon asked, “We missed your voice! Did you miss us?”

The fans, of course, shouted “Yes!”

    super-junior-philippine-arena super-junior-live-in-manila

Afterwards, youngest Kyuhyun performed his solo song “At Gwanghwamun,” duo Donghae and Eunhyuk then wowed the crowed with “Oppa Oppa,” the rest of the members joined in before the song ended.

Super Junior ended the night with “Mr. Simple,” “Mamacita,” and a bit of their “Choki Choki Dance!”

    suju-live-in-manila

Being part of Best of Best in the Philippines was overwhelming. The choreography, personalities and colourful outfits were definitely the best. On the other hand, K-Pop fans were treated to a night that they will surely cherish forever. They got to see 4 of the best Kpop idols at the Philippine Arena and totally enjoyed all the performances. I’m looking forward to see more shows to be held at the biggest indoor arena in the world because of friendly staff, state of the art facilities, superb sound and affordable food inside the arena. Overall, the show was well-organized, from shuttle, pre-event show up to the main event. The atmosphere of the night was incredible and some people got really emotional towards the end of the show and I hope they will come back soon specially a solo show by SNSD.
