Pop duo hailing from London, Oh Wonder is set to return to Manila for a solo show on July 21, 2017 at Samsung Hall, SM Aura. Relatively new to the music scene, Oh Wonder has experienced international fame in just a few short years.

2016 was a breakout year for Oh Wonder; today, the band’s members, Anthony West and Josephine Vander Gucht, take the Oh Wonder tour to venues like The Latitude Festival, Firefly Music Festival, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and more.

As their singles began to trickle into the music scene, the band signed a record deal with Republic Records and managed to sell out live shows in London, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Paris and New York – before completing their first album and without having ever performed live

While Oh Wonder has released many tracks, several stand out as their most popular. “Livewire,” for example, is a dreamy and dense track that features synchronized vocals and has claimed more than 113,000 streams on Soundcloud. Other fan favorites include “Crazy in Love,” which has grossed 29,000 streams on Soundcloud, “Body Gold” with 2.42 million streams, “Technicolour Beat” with 3.36 million listens, and “Drive” with 1.83 million listens.

  • Ovation Productions Announces Cast of Sister Act

Ovation Productions Announces Cast of Sister Act

Ovation Productions proudly announces its new theater offering to all musical theater fans with “SISTER ACT,” a hilarious, feel-good musical straight from Broadway, New York as it plays beginning June 27 – July 9 at the Theatre at Solaire.

Based on the mega-hit film from the 1990s, SISTER ACT will be performed in Manila for the first time on a limited two-week run and promises the audience to groove to the original score with music by 8-time Oscar Academy, Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning composer Alan Menken  (Disney’s Alladin, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, The Little Mermaid, Enchanted, Little Shop of Horrors), with its vast inspiration of musical styles from Motown, soul and funk to great big disco anthems.

Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, TROIKA Entertainment and Sister Act On Tour, LLC, SISTER ACT received five 2011 Tony® Award nominations including BEST MUSICAL, BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (Alan Menken (music)/Glenn Slater (lyrics), and BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL (Cheri & Bill Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane).

SISTER ACT tells the story of a wannabe disco diva Deloris Van Cartier whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder, and is put into protective custody in the one place the police are sure she won’t be found – a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco vibe and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so, blows her cover. Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, SISTER ACT is reason to rejoice!

“ To hear people laugh and cheer the way they do at SISTER ACT — a show people think they know but are pleasantly surprised to discover is not what they are expecting — is a magical experience for a producer,” says Producer Whoopi Goldberg, who also played the lead role of Deloris in the 1992 Hollywood blockbuster.

For the Manila production, the cast of SISTER ACT are as follows:

DENÉ HILL (Deloris Van Cartier) is an award winning international opera singer who recently co-starred in the PBS Docu-drama “A Time for Greatness,” where she played the role of Geraldine Whittington, the first African American secretary in the White House, to President LBJ.  Her recent musical theater credits include: International Opera Tour of Porgy and Bess (Annie) directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, Civil War (Bessie Tole), The Butterfly’s Day (Guardian Angel) New York Off-Broadway premiere, with additional musical credits in Dreamgirls, Footloose, Hairspray and Hair. Opera credits include: La Boheme (Musetta), and Don Giovanni (Zerlina). Dené earned a Bachelor of Music at University of Texas at Arlington and studied at Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy.

REBECCA MASON-WYGAL (Mother Superior) toured the USA in Mamma Mia!, understudying  the lead roles of Donna & Rosie. She is a founding member of Coeurage Theatre Company in Los Angeles.

Such a Heavenly View: Coldplay Brings Magic to Manila

Filling the 35,000 capacity of the Mall of Asia Concert Ground on Coldplay’s first ever gig in Manila and with tickets selling like hotcakes during Citi pre-sale, Globe pre-sale and public sale in November last year, it was evident that this show was going to be one of the biggest concerts that Manila has ever had. My friends never encountered a bigger battle trying to score tickets at the SM outlets and online before.

  • Shawn Mendes Treats Manila Better

    Shawn Mendes Treats Manila Better

It was hard to know what to expect last Saturday night as the packed-out MOA Arena eagerly awaited for Shawn Mendes to hit the stage.

He drew thousands of fans to Mall of Asia Arena. The 18-year-old Canadian singer whose singles “Stitches”, “Treat You Better” and “Mercy” became huge hits worldwide, finally performed for the first time in Manila, proving the teen heartthrob has come a long way from posting covers on Vine, a social video app that allows users to upload and share videos and follow those who create them. The screams were deafening and the crowd was on their feet.

Wearing a dark grey shirt and black pants, Shawn kicked off the show with “Something Big,” a track off of his debut album, Handwritten. The stage production was simple, but he did a great job in commanding the stage. Shawn was very interactive with his fans throughout the set. Fans were singing along so loud that there was a point where I couldn’t hear him. He even said that the Manila leg of his world tour might be the loudest crowd he had ever played to.

The second song of the night was “The Weight”, which is his favorite one to perform live. Considering that his first Manila show was part of the Handwritten World Tour, Shawn still performed seven songs from his second album, Illuminate. Through his stage presence and the way he sings every song, Shawn brings emotion, soul, and everything he’s got. Shawn makes everyone feel welcomed, connected and part of something special.

The singer-songwriter treated fans to his lyrical prowess of “Three Empty Words” and “Patience.” One of the highlights of the night was when he performed his current hit, “Mercy” which fired up the crowd.

Between songs, Shawn took the time to talk to the crowd, sharing stories and expressing his love for our country. After serenading the crowd with “Never Be Alone”, which fans lit up the arena with their phones, he went to his piano for a performance of “Life of the Party.” He had the crowd in the palm of his hands. Mendes could have asked them to do anything. He instructed and they followed. The crowd was singing, dancing and crying as he closed the set with “Stitches.”

When majority of the audience is in their teens, one would find it tough to silence an entire arena. The fans were unstoppable singing and screaming their hearts out. Seeing Shawn Mendes perform a 90-minute set while playing his guitar was incredible. Sure, other artists can sing and play instruments too, but very few can do so with dedication, passion and love for their fans. His concerts are authentic: no lip synching and background vocals. Words cannot capture the magical feeling of experiencing the music of Shawn Mendes live in Manila.

  • What You Missed – Goo Goo Dolls Live in Manila

What You Missed – Goo Goo Dolls Live in Manila

It took them quite a long time to perform in Manila, and damn well they did, finally. Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik said so himself, that the band could have gone here earlier to perform before the crowd of Nineties kids–by age and at heart–presumably during a more youthful and energetic time, and maybe even having either original drummer George Tutuska or his successor Mike Malinin in tow. But that night in Araneta was no time and place for regrets, not on the part of the band and the devoted fans who showed up to make the night successfully memorable.
