Calein: A band to watch out for in 2019

Taking the Metro Manila indie scene by storm, gig after gig in your favorite bars, Calein releases “Someone”, a song purely about loss and the darkness that comes along with losing a significant partner.

The latest single from the indie/alternative band starts with a sound that pre-empts listeners that the song will most likely make someone cry. As the lyrics go, vocalist and rhythm guitarist JD Mustacho sings about how this past significant partner has found her “Someone”, unfortunately in the shape of someone else, and how badly this has affected him. Just as when you allow yourself to indulge into sadness because of its sad-yet-honest lyrics and soulful sound, you’ll find your head bopping as the song transitions into its chorus and synth-ful drop as Calein perfectly creates this sadness into something beautiful; something worth slow dancing to, especially at live gigs. This is simply the sound of heartbreak in 2019.

Calein was originally formed in 2015, and today the band consists of vocalist/rhythm guitarist JD Mustacho, lead guitarist JP Isidro, and bassist Kleyo Aydalla. “Someone” is released under OC Records! Same record label with (Unique Salonga, Bita and the botflies, Callalily and more.

The breakout smash was the
highest-selling single by a debut artist in 2016, and catapulted the Danish artist to sold-out tours around the world, critical acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Billboard, and countless television performances, including The GRAMMY(r) Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards, where he was also nominated for “Best New Artist.”

While Lukas wrote the breakout debut album and subsequent smash “7 Years” in his mid-20s, grappling with the loss of his father, the new album sees Lukas push deeper still, holding a magnifying glass up to his life, laying bare his vulnerabilities and his fears, his sadness and his joy. Now 30, engaged to his long-term girlfriend, and proud father of a little girl, Viola, 3 serves as a “growing up” moment for Lukas as he transitions from son to father. • Taeyeon Heats Up Manila!

    Taeyeon Heats Up Manila!

Taeyeon of SNSD (So Nyuh Shi Dae/ Girls’ Generation) soared high with the recent Manila leg of her “S..” tour at the New Frontier Theatre last December 14.

SONEs (So-Wons), the fandom of SNSD, signifies that the group and their fans will forever be one, and it was indeed a night where Filipino SONEs and Taeyeon became one. Local SONEs have been anticipating Taeyeon’s return, since the last Manila concert that Girl’s Generation participated in is already three years ago. Well, it was definitely worth the wait, wasn’t it?

The sold-out concert for Taeyeon’s tour was full of energy and brimming with enthusiasm coming from both Taeyeon and the fans. The stage was set beautifully, and made the fans even more excited for what was to unfold for the next two hours. They kept on chanting Taengoo’s (Taeyeon’s nickname) name and sang along to her songs while waiting for the concert to start.

Taeyeon kicked off with “Here I Am”, where a music video was played in the background. It was followed by “I Got Love,” and “Fire” which was complimented by her red outfit. Known as one of the most powerful vocalists of Korea’s SM Entertainment label, Taeyeon belted out “Rain,” “All Night Long,” “Baram Baram” and “Why,”. She was impressed when PH SONE’s sang along., musing “Wow you know all my songs, I really didn’t expect the support from you guys, thank you so much”.

The concert felt like a fan meeting as she made sure to interact with her fans. There was even a moment when she shared her sentiments and PH SONEs kept on jeering her with “Iiyak na yan” to which she reacted. She was even tagged as the “Pambansang Beshy/Beshie” and she actively played along by repeating every Filipino word uttered by her fans. Taeyeon also conveyed how elated she was meeting her Filipino fans, saying

“How long have you guys waited for me? I also waited a long time for you guys. For us to come here, there are lots of things that happened, but I thought that you guys are the most important thing. I will go back to Korea thinking that my decision wasn’t wrong”

The concert progressed and she crooned the crowd with “One Day,” “Gemini,” “Christmas Without You” “I’m all Ears,” and “Gravity”. The climax of the night was the live rendition of her song “Fine”, which definitely sent goosebumps to every fan inside the theatre. She mentioned that it was her first time experiencing a warm December, and jokingly asked if a Philippine Santa wears a bikini. “It’s my first time to experience a really hot December. It’s not bad, it’s actually really good”.

As the concert went on, the energy from the audience never floundered as fans kept on livening the mood with loud cheers. Taeyeon said that the shrieks and cheers make it feel like World Cup and Olympics. “I really really feel that if we go to the World Cup, we’ll win”.

Sadly, the two-hour concert had to come to an end. Taeyeon performed “Time Lapse,”, “Circus,” and I” for her encore. “I think today’s concert will be very memorable for me. I’m so happy that I was able to sing to you guys for a very long time and I’m so happy that I was able to receive your energy and passion, SONEs are really the funniest in the world. PH SONEs are the best. SONE 짱야!!”

After years of waiting, the yearning heart of PH SONEs were quenched with fabulous performances from Taeyeon. We’ll definitely wait for the time that we’ll be able to see Taeyeon along with the other members of Girl’s Generation.

  • Shane Filan Charms Manila Yet Again

Shane Filan Charms Manila Yet Again

On September 15, Shane Filan returned to Manila for a solo concert at the KIA Theater. The 39-year old Irish singer, who is known as the lead singer of the immensely successful boyband Westlife, is no stranger to the Philippines.

After the band announced their split on 2012, Shane has then pursued a solo career. Since 2013, he had also visited Manila several times to promote his albums, holding mall shows and meet and greet sessions. By himself, he effortlessly drew crowds consisting of old and new fans alike.

Filipino balladeer Jed Madela opened the evening with an impressive performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings”/”Hero” and “Di Matitinag”. Upon entering the venue, he jested, “Akala niyo si Shane na ‘no? Pero bakit mataba,?” (‘You thought it was Shane’s turn, but why is he fat?) which the crowd accepted in good humor. Joke aside, his stage presence was amazing and his vocal prowess even more so.

Shane Filan’s concert at the KIA Theater was such a treat. Having seen a few of his mall shows for the past 5 years, his major solo show that evening was the one I looked forward to the most, and it definitely was the most memorable one yet.

Shane entered the stage in a simple yet classy black suit. The stage set-up was simple, having only a led screen at the back, but his charisma as he performed live was fascinating. He started his set with “Everything to Me”, “Unbreakable”, “This I Promise You” and “Heaven” which were tracks from his solo albums.

One fond memory of the evening happened at the middle of the concert, when Shane asked the crowd for a favor. As it turned out, that night happened to be the birthday of his 10-year-old son, Patrick. “I’m missing his birthday at home, but I couldn’t think of a better place to be than in Manila tonight,” he said. He then asked everyone to sing a birthday song Patrick while he took a video of it to send to him. Amusingly, he was very particular about the song ending with “dear Patrick” in contrast with the typical Filipino version of just ending it with “happy birthday to you”. “You forgot his name! That’s not gonna go down well in Ireland,” he joked. The crowd went on to sing the whole song twice to get it right.

It doesn’t end there. One lucky fan got a chance to come up the stage to get signed poster and more. Anna, who was holding up a banner saying “I’ve been waiting 16 years to get a hug from you”, actually made her dream a reality. She attended the concert with her husband who also got to do the same, plus they got a selfie with Shane. “I guess I just bring people together, don’t I?,” he teased.

The second half of the concert focused on the more nostalgic side as he started performing songs that were originally by Westlife including “My Love” and “If I Let You Go”. Manila also got another special moment as Shane Filan called on Jed Madela to perform “Flying Without Wings”.

“You’re such a good crowd. It’s incredible. The place is packed! Everbody is smiling at me! I don’t think I’ve seen so many happy people. It makes me very happy. It makes me smile, too,” Shane said to the crowd with a beaming smile on his face.

The most amazing thing about Shane Filan is his voice and the way he sings with such vitality and character. Next to that is the fact that he simply enjoys singing live, and you can see it in the way he holds himself onstage. In contrast to the sold-out arena shows that Westlife had before, the KIA Theater is rather compact. With the lights fully open, he scanned the crowd and took the time to look at people’s faces. The effort he makes to connect with his fans is astounding.

Shane is also very appreciative of Manila. “Every time I’m here, I feel like I’m welcome all the time. It’s like a second home.” Having been to Manila a lot as a member of Westlife and as a solo artist, it seems that he has grown fond of our country.

He also performed “You Raise Me Up” (which he claimed to be his favorite Westlife song). For the (unexpected) finale, he sang the upbeat “World of Our Own”.

Three weeks ago, I would have ended this article with something along the lines of “The nostalgia was overwhelming, it was really nice to hear the good, old songs from my childhood”. Well, those words are still true. After the show, I found myself reeling over Westlife’s old albums and the nostalgia damn near made me drown. However, much to my (and the world’s) surprise, Westlife announced on October 3 that they are indeed getting back together for new music and a new tour. I guess that’s one more thing we can all look forward to from here on out.

  • Taeyeon’s five songs which most of us can definitely relate to.

Taeyeon’s five songs which most of us can definitely relate to.

Taeyeon is known as the leader of SNSD/Girl’s Generation and their lead vocalist of the group. She is known for her wide range of vocals and catchy songs which most of us can definitely relate to.

Here are some of Taeyeon’s songs that we’re looking forward to hear on her first solo concert here in MNL.

    1. Fine

This song was released last February 2017 and was included on her first studio album “My Voice”. This song is solely about how someone feels during break up. The songs focuses on Taeyeon’s vocal and that goosebumps feel when she launches herself for the chorus. You will definitely get the I-know-how-that-feels vibes.

    하루 한 달 일 년 그 쯤이면
    웃으며 추억 할 거라 했지만
    나는 아니야
    쉽지 않을 것 같아

( When one day, one month, one year passes
You said you’d probably smile and reminisce but not me, it won’t be easy for me.)

    2. I

This is her debut song as a solo artist. “I” was released last October 2015. Reading through the translated lyrics, the song is about someone who faces struggles in life, but instead of focusing on the unfavorable circumstances, she decided to see the beauty of life .

    빛을 쏟는 Sky
    그 아래 선 I
    꿈꾸듯이 Fly
    My Life is a Beauty

    (Sky that pours light
    (I) stand under it
    Fly as if I’m dreaming
    My life is a beauty)

    3. Rain

This was digitally release by SM Ent. for SMTown Station. This song really compliments Taeyeon’s voice. The song is pertaining to “Tears” that is being shed because of a painful breakup. This is about the agony and the tearful recollection.

비가 오면 내리는 기억에 번지는 아픔에
    흠뻑 쏟아지는 너를 보다
    선명했던 그 시간에 멈춘 채
    추억에 젖은 채
아름다웠던 너를 그려 in the rain

(Memories come down when it rains, spreading pain
Watching you as you get soaked
    Clear in that moment,
    wet with memories
I think of you when you were beautiful in the rain)

    4. 11:11

This song was released digitally on November 2016. The lyrics is about a girl’s reminiscences about making wishes with her former lover when the clock struck 11:11. 11:11 is a multidimensional bridge between 2 reality systems, the old reality of duality and the new reality of oneness.

    모든 게 자릴 찾아서 떠나가고
    넌 내 모든 걸 갖고서 떠나도
내 맘은 시계 속의 두 바늘처럼
    같은 곳을 두고 맴돌기만 해

(Everything finds its place and leaves
You took all of me and left
But like the two hands of the clock in my heart
I keep lingering in the same place)

    5. Why

This song was digitally released on June 2016. The lyrics of the song seems to saying goodbye to a long time love, her comfort zone and to finally move on. The Why music video was thought of to be an Epilogue of her song, Starlight (featuring Dean).

    쫓아가기도 벅차 숨이 찬
    세상이 전부는 아냐
    하루 종일 걸어도 똑같은
    풍경은 절대 보이지 않아
    하얀 종이에 적어 본 Why
    잉크처럼 번지는 맘
I’m falling, I’m falling, I’m falling to you

    (The world isn’t all about
    trying to catch up
Even if I walk all day the same
    landscape will never been seen
I wrote on white paper, why,
    my heart smears like ink
I’m falling, I’m falling, I’m falling to you)

Taeyeon’s songs are mostly about break up, heartbreaks and moving on. Don’t miss the chance to see her perform these songs live on 12/14 at New Frontier Theatre and be ready to be mesmerize by her voice.

They are selling tickets to ‘In Your Area in Manila Tour’ at six to 8 times their cover prices. The tickets which went on sale last week were all snapped up in just less than 1 hour. The tickets were originally priced between P2650 and P19750 and were sold via SM Ticket outlets and smtickets.com. They are available now on reseller site StubHub at severely marked-up prices. They are now being sold at P16, 660 for one general admission ticket up to P80,000 for a VIP ticket. This website is not authorised by the organiser to sell tickets to the concert.
