11 Artists We Wish To See In Manila Soon

The year 2019 saw a lot of international acts on the Philippine concert stage — from Maroon 5, Troye Sivan, Jason Mraz, Lauv, LANY, to BLACKPINK, EXO, Stray Kids, Jung Hae In, Park Seo Jun, Lee Seung Gi, Kang Daniel, among others. And although the concert scene in the country continues to blossom as more international artists are set to land in the archipelago for their respective shows, there are acts we could not help but wish to also see perform on the concert stage (real soon please).

    #1 Adele

Since giving us the ultimate hugot songs such as “Rolling In The Deep”, “Someone Like You”, “Hello”, and “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)”, we have been daydreaming of the day we get to hear these songs live from Adele herself that when her Adele Live 2016-2017 was announced, we were keeping our fingers crossed to see Philippines on the list. Unfortunately, the tour concluded without the Grammy award-winning singer stopping by Asia.

Still, the hope remains as the chart-topping singer is reportedly set to release new music soon and hopefully, go on tour again with the inclusion of Asian cities as stops. In the meantime, we wait for her return with her fourth studio album which is expected to released in December 2019 (still, no confirmation yet.)

    #2 Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys has been all over the globe for different concert tours since the band was formed in 2002. Unfortunately for Filipino fans of the English rock band, Alex, Matt, Jamie, and Nick have yet to bring their live performances to the Philippine concert stage and may have to wait a bit longer as they have just wrapped up their Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino Tour, their sixth headlining concert tour, in April this year.

Through the Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino Tour, Arctic Monkeys performed in a total of 86 shows in North America, Europe, Oceania, and Latin America. It also marked their first tour since the 2013-2014 AM Tour.

    #3 Melanie Martinez

Since wowing us with her performance of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” on The Voice, a performance that got Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, and Blake Sheldon hitting that “I Want You” button, we have wanted to hear Melanie Martinez sing live. With her K-12 Tour still on at the moment, we are keeping our fingers crossed that the “High School Sweethearts” singer will finally make her debut appearance on the local concert stage.

    #4 Rex Orange County

At 21, Alexander O’Connor, popularly known by his stage name Rex Orange County, has released three albums with Pony being his most recent release. The album contains a total of ten songs including “10/10”, “Pluto Projector”, and “Face to Face”. With a new album, we are also keeping our eyes glued to his social media channels in case he drops tour dates that will hopefully include the Philippines.

    #5 Drake

In case you did not know, Drake has yet to make a Philippine concert stage debut, meaning the country has never witnessed a live performance of the chart-topping and multi-awarded singer-songwriter. With his applause-worthy discography and amazing career, we are sure that he will definitely take over the concert stage that will get the crowd up their feet. But for now, we continue to hope that he will grace the Philippine concert stage in the future.

    #6 Post Malone

At the age of 24 years old, Austin Richard Post, more known by his stage name Post Malone, has achieved a lot — from chart-topping singles, Grammy nominations, and collaborations with brands like Crocs. Since he rose to fame through his 2015 single “White Iverson”, people have been wanting more of the unique artist who blends different music genres and captures the world with his songwriting and vocal style.

With his songs constantly on the charts in the Philippines, it is safe to say that music fans in the country wants Post Malone IN. A. CONCERT. PLEASE.

    #7 Billie Eilish

In case you did not know, it was Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” which broke the 19-week run of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” on Billboard Hot 100. With the 2019 single, the American singer-songwriter became the first artist born in the 2000s, as well as, the youngest artist since Lorde with “Royals”, to have a number-one single on Billboard.

The same year, Billie Eilish also went on tour, the When We All Fall Asleep Tour, which kicked off at the Coachella Festival and concluded in Mexico City. Unfortunately, Philippines was not a stop of the tour. She will once again embark on a tour titled Where Do We Go? World Tour which starts in Miami on March 9, 2020. It is still unclear if stops in Asia will be included in the tour as it will reportedly wrap up with a concert in London in July next year.

    #8 Lewis Capaldi

Even after a year since its release, Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s 2019 hit single “Someone You Loved” continues to chart in the Philippines. In fact, his album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, which features the song, hit gold in the country.

With the emerging popularity of the singer-songwriter in the archipelago, we are hoping he drops by the Philippines for a concert. Currently, he has an on-going tour, the Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent Tour.

    #9 Eminem

For the past 31 years Eminem has been active in the music scene, the Philippines has yet to witness one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time perform live. We are not gonna keep this long and put out all the reasons why we need to because, really, an Eminem concert in the Philippines will surely be legendary.

    #10 Song Joong Ki

When Descendants of the Sun phenomenon hit the Philippines, admit it, we had expectations that maybe, just maybe, its lead star Song Joong Ki will finally make his debut on the Philippine stage through a fan meeting. In the first place, he was going around Asia through his 2016 Asia Fan Meeting Tour that saw him meet his fans in Thailand, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Unfortunately, he ended his fan meeting in 2016 in Shanghai. That’s why, the desire to see the actor for a fan meeting in the Philippines is strong for his fans who have been waiting to finally see him live. Although it is unlikely that he will be added to the list of Korean acts coming to the country this year, we will be more than happy to welcome him to the archipelago in 2020. So, Song Joong Ki, please come visit the Philippines soon!

    #11 Gong Yoo

Anne Curtis will probably join us in our plea for a Gong Yoo fan meeting. The South Korean actor, who first gained recognition in the Philippines as Choi Han Kyul in the 2007 drama Coffee Prince, won our hearts over and over as Seok Woo in Train to Busan and Kim Shin in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.

Like Song Joong Ki, Gong Yoo will also be unlikely to come to the Philippines this year, but with 365 days in a year, 2020 will have a lot of space for more Korean acts.

  • SF9 Shines Bright With Stellar Performances In “UNIXERSE” In Manila

SF9 Shines Bright With Stellar Performances In “UNIXERSE” In Manila

More than a year after their sweet fan meeting in 2018, Youngbin, Inseong, Jaeyoon, Dawon, Rowoon, Zuho, Taeyang, Hwiyoung, and Chani returned to the Philippines, bringing their talents and charms of cosmic proportions to the concert stage in the 2019 SF9 LIVE FANTASY #2 UNIXERSE held at the New Frontier Theater on November 16.

The venue was bustling with excitement as Fantasy from all over the Philippines (and the world) came together to cheer for their favorite boys and leave lasting memories. And when the lights dimmed, everyone was ready to be transported to another universe.

Oozing with charisma, SF9 kicked off the Manila leg of their tour with a triple-threat combination of “RPM”, “Now or Never”, and “Fanfare”. After hyping the crowd with their spectacular first set, the boys got the venue screaming with kilig as they showcase their Filipino skills with sweet words of “Namiss niyo ba kami?”, “Masaya ako”, and more, before serenading with “Midnight Road” and “Go Back In Time”, and bringing the Spanish feel with “O Sole Mio”.

But before Fantasy got the chance to recuperate from the spectacular stages, SF9 made it hard for them to breathe with a relay of solo stages starting with the hard-hitting and blazing rap of Youngbin, followed by Dawon’s too-cool-for-our-soul cover of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”.

After surprising us with his cool abs display in “RPM”, Jaeyoon gave us another reason to fall in love with him in his cover of Jeong Sewoon’s “My Ocean”. Zuho turned up the heat with an intoxicating performance of “Champagne” and the energy continued to rise up as Hwiyoung took the baton next with a captivating stage of “Snow”. Taeyang mesmerized Fantasy and got them all proud of his dancing skills in his solo stage which also featured an appearance from Zuho. Ending the relay of solo stages, Chani was ever-beautiful in his “Destiny” stage, perfectly executed in his hanbok.

Meanwhile, Inseong and Rowoon expressed their regret of being unable to prepare their respective solo stages for that night’s show — most probably due to their hectic schedules from their individual activities with Inseong hosting We K-Pop and Rowoon starring in the drama Extraordinary You.

Following their solo stages, the boys went on to create more memories with their Fantasy who have been waiting for their return and their first solo concert in the Philippines since last year. And although it took more than a year, the boy group, FNC Entertainment’s first male dance group, made sure that their fans will go home filled with unforgettable moments that they will remember with big smiles on their faces as they packed the evening with more of their songs such as “Dreamer”, “Jungle Game”, “Play Hard”, “Round and Round”, “Let’s Hangout”, “Mamma Mia”, “Photograph”, “Unlimited”, “See You Tomorrow”, and “Life Is So Beautiful”.

Before ending the concert, each member expressed his feelings and left messages to Fantasy. The boys promised to work harder, come back with new music, and meet their Filipino fans once again. Despite having reached the end of the show, SF9 and Fantasy spent every minute with so much energy and happiness, capping the 2019 SF9 LIVE FANTASY #2 UNIXERSE with “Beautiful Light” and “Beat Goes On”.

Indeed, the night was fantastic in cosmic proportions and true to its name “UNIXERSE” as Youngbin, Inseong, Jaeyoon, Dawon, Rowoon, Zuho, Taeyang, Hwiyoung, Chani, and their beloved Fantasy transported us to a whole new universe, created by their love and support for each other. It was so bright and so spectacular, perfect for the shining talents and charms of SF9 which are intensified by the selfless dedication of Fantasy.

5 Covers Of Sam Tsui We Will Always Love

American singer-songwriter Sam Tsui was one of the pioneers who paved the way for a generation of YouTubers. With his amazing song covers, he built a name for himself — in and out of the platform. And as we countdown to his return to the Philippines, happening in ten days, we can’t help but look back on the song covers he released and impressed us with.

READ: Sam Tsui To Bring His “The Gold Jacket Tour” To Manila In November

    “Love Me Like You Do”

Uploaded on YouTube on March 15, 2015, Sam Tsui and Alex Goot’s cover of Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do”, which also served as an original soundtrack for the film 50 Shades of Gray, has amassed more than three million views since its release.

The cover received favorable reactions from viewers with many fans commending the quality of Tsui’s voice and the beautiful harmony it creates with Goot’s voice. A viewer also commented that he prefers the cover than the original.

“Say You Won’t Let Go/Someone Like You”

This mash-up was perfectly woven together with Sam Tsui and Vidya Vox, showing off a clean harmony that brings out the emotions of the songs and highlights their lyrics.

Since its release in May 2017, the video has been viewed more than 2.2 million times. Viewers were once again impressed by the cover and applauded the blending of the singers’ voices.

    “Just A Dream”

Sam Tsui dedicated this song cover to his good friend Christina Grimmie who passed away in 2016 at the age of 22. He previously collaborated with late singer for the same song which was uploaded on Kurt Hugo Schneider’s YouTube channel.

As of November 15, 2019, the video has been watched 6.5 million times since it was uploaded on June 11, 2016. Watch the emotional cover of Tsui below and his collaboration with Christina Grimmie.

    “Payphone/Telephone”

The American singer-songwriter also came out with an amazing mash-up of Maroon 5’s “Payphone” and Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” in 2012 which has now amassed more than 6.1 million views. Aside from his impressive vocals, he also wowed with his use of various instruments. And don’t be fooled by the title, because aside from “Payphone” and “Telephone”, he threw in another song!

“Thinking Out Loud/I’m Not The Only One”

Probably his most viewed video on his channel, this “Thinking Out Loud” x “I’m Not The Only One” mash-up got us the kilig feels! Sam Tsui collaborated with his husband and fellow singer Casey Breves for this amazing cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” and Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One”.

Now carving a new path as they write the latest chapter for the band, As I Lay Dying are currently setting the world ablaze. PULP Live World and Skesh Entertainment are excited to announce that As I Lay Dying are returning to the Philippines as part of their World Tour, years after the band first scorched Manila.

Hot on the heels of their brand new album Shaped By Fire, the metalcore behemoths are on track to reconnect with their Filipino fans, who last caught the band seven years ago at PULP SUMMER SLAM XIII: ‘Til Death Do Us Part. Finally, their Manila comeback is on the horizon. AS I LAY DYING: SHAPED BY FIRE ASIA TOUR LIVE IN MANILA takes place on January 20, 2020 at the Skydome, SM City North EDSA.

From ashes, the band reignited a fire that now burns brighter than it ever has now that the brotherhood has reassembled, following Tim Lambesis’ release and subsequent reconciliation with bandmates. “With everything that’s happened and all of the time away, there really was no other option than to be the best version of As I Lay Dying we could possibly be,” Tim has said in a statement. “We wanted to make sure we made an album that represented our best selves. Individually and collectively, a similar rebirth happened.” “We are tremendously grateful to have found positive resolve from the worst moments of our history,” the band comments. “Subsequent years found us on varied paths—all of which slowly led towards resolutions of growth, healing, and reconciliation.”

“As I Lay Dying’s collective purpose is to share a message of hope for everyone through the empowering outlet of music, and we are humbled by the overwhelming support we have received from family, friends, and fans so far.”

Indeed, Shaped By Fire marked a triumphant return for a band that, despite circumstances that set them back for years, has found it in them to forge on, as they’ve been reborn with a new purpose following a long-winding journey of reproach and redemption.

  • 5 IU Songs That Should Be Part Of Your Playlist

5 IU Songs That Should Be Part Of Your Playlist

In case you did not know (which we highly doubt), South Korean singer-songwriter and actress Lee Ji Eun, popularly known by her stage name IU, is finally making her Philippine concert stage debut at the SMART Araneta Coliseum on December 13 through the Manila leg of her 2019 IU TOUR CONCERT <LOVE, POEM>. Tickets to the concert will go on sale starting November 17 via TicketNet outlets and online at www.ticketnet.com.ph.

READ: IU To Finally Debut On Philippine Concert Stage Via “Love, Poem” In Manila In December

With a month to go before the show, we channel our excitement to see the multi-talented and ever-pretty singer-actress in the Philippine shore into a list of five songs of IU that you should definitely add to your playlist and listen on repeat as we count down to D-Day.

Ready, PH Uaenas? And so, we start!

    “Lost Child”

Avid fans of IU will know “Lost Child” as the singer’s debut single which she performed for the first time live at M! Countdown in September 2008. The song was later on released as the single of her debut extended play Lost and Found. Although the song and the EP did not do well commercially at that the time of its release, the chilling and haunting ballad remains to be a gem in IU’s discography as it showcased the amazing potential of the singer to pull such piece, considering she was only 15 years old when it came out.

    “Nagging”

While “Lost Child” is an emotional ballad, “Nagging” is an adorable song that captured the youthfulness of IU. Released in 2010, the singer-actress teamed up with 2AM’s Seulong for the single that went on to top Gaon Digital Chart. “Nagging”, written by Kim Eana and composed by Lee Min Soo, served as the theme song of the second season of the MBC variety show We Got Married.

    “Someday”

Dream High fans, put your hands up! This song will bring back the sweet memories of the lovely tandem of Jason (played by 2PM’s Wooyoung) and Pil Sook (played by IU). The single was part of the original soundtrack of the teen drama which also served as IU’s first acting role.

Known as one of IU’s best-selling singles for a soundtrack, “Someday” took on the number one spot on Gaon Digital Chart and sold more than two million digital copies by the end of 2011.

    “Palette”

An IU playlist will never be complete without “Palette”! The song was released in 2017 as part of the singer-songwriter’s fourth studio album of the same title and saw her collaborate with BIGBANG’s G-Dragon.

“Palette” was written by IU and G-Dragon, with IU producing and composing the track, as well. Tamar Herman of Billboard described the song as an “autobiographical reflection of the songstress growing into herself as a 20-something with a nine-year career under her belt.” Aside from the commercial success of the song and the album itself, it also received positive feedback with IU receiving praise for her songwriting.

    “Bbibbi”

Released in commemoration of her tenth anniversary, “Bbibbi” takes aim at haters and addresses IU’s feelings, while showcasing the singer’s growing confidence and maturity. And haters are definitely gonna hate, as the song went on to top music charts in South Korea and worldwide. It also received a platinum certification after surpassing 100 million streams and 2.5 million downloads.

Be ready to add more songs to your IU playlist as the singer-songwriter will release her ninth extended play Love Poem on November 18. And on December 13, sing along with IU as she stages her first solo concert in the Philippines at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Tickets will go on sale starting November 17 via TicketNet online and outlets.

The 2019 IU TOUR CONCERT <LOVE, POEM> in Manila is presented by Kakao M and PULP Live World.

  • 6 Day6 Songs That Overwhelm Us With Feels

6 Day6 Songs That Overwhelm Us With Feels

Since debuting in 2015 with the mini album The Day, fronted by “Congratulations”, South Korean band Day6 has continuously impressed, treating fans and casual listeners alike with a wide-ranging discography that explores various themes — from growing up, relationships, life, and so much more.

Each year was a witness to how much the band, composed of Jae, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon, has evolved and beautifully showcased their colors as a unique group and the first and only band to debut under JYP Entertainment. Recently back with their third studio album titled The Book of Us: Entropy, the boys continue to expand their music and venture into other themes. According to Young K during the press conference held in commemoration of the album’s release, The Book of Us: Entropy sings about the interactions between people and represents the warmth and coldness of these relationships. It also saw the band try variety of genres.

With their amazing releases, Jae, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon continue to leave their mark in the music industry as Day6 — a group that stays timeless and sing about every moment. And in appreciation for the music of Day6 and in anticipation of the boys’ return to the Philippine concert stage on November 23 at the SMART Araneta Coliseum, we listed down six of the many great hits that hit us hard with feels every time.

READ: 6 Reasons Why Day6 World Tour “Gravity” In Manila Is A Must-See Show

    “Congratulations”

“Congratulations”, the lead single of Day6’s first extended play The Day, is personally one of the best debut songs in K-Pop. It hooks you from the get go with Dowoon’s drum introduction that meets with a soft guitar entrance and Jae’s vocals. The lyrics pierce the heart with its bitter words. The pain relayed by the song was highlighted by the music video that features Choi Woo Shik and Jang Hee Ryung.

    “You Were Beautiful”

Released in February as part of the Every Day6 project, “You Were Beautiful” continues the story of “Congratulations” with its music video featuring Choi Woo Shik once again. The lyrics reminisce the memories the couple had — the guy appreciating the moments they had, but making it clear from the start that he does not have the intention to get back to what they had. It was a farewell song, of moving forward and finally getting a closure by coming into terms with the break up.

    For the last time

Your eyes that looked at me

Your voice that said “take care”

    Everything, everything

    even that, to me

    You were beautiful

Please tell me I’m not the only one that cries when listening to this song.

    “I Wait”

“I Wait” is the first single released through the Every Day6 project, along with the sidetrack “Goodbye Winter”. With this song, the band kicked off the monthly project with an impactful start, making the wait of My Days worthwhile as they get treated to an upbeat, rock song that begins with Wonpil’s keyboard and blends the message of the song nicely to the beats and the hints of melancholic melodies.

    “Hi Hello”

“Hi Hello” is another track from the Every Day6 project. Compared to “I Wait” and “You Were Beautiful”, this song was calmer and sweeter — a song that will be perfect for a summer road trip (or was it because of the music video?). The music video was also lovely and refreshing. While both “I Wait” and “You Were Beautiful” tug the heart with their seemingly melancholic lyrics, “Hi Hello” was delicate and filled with harmony.

    “I Need Somebody”

The October release for Every Day6 gifted the world with two impressive tracks from the boys — “When You Love Someone” and “I Need Somebody”. Both songs are mellow and slow in the best possible way and choosing one than the other has proven to be a challenging task, but for this list, “I Need Somebody” takes the spot as it conveys a different message from the other songs listed here.

The words “Why am I alone?” really get me every time I listen to this song. The lyrics of the song, overall, make you stare at nothingness and contemplate life, to be honest.

    “Beautiful Feeling”

We cannot end the list on a sad note, so what better way to cap it off but with “Beautiful Feeling”. I am a sucker for fan-dedicated songs and I really love the sound of this track — lighthearted and sweet. Day6 first performed the song during their You Made My Day fan meeting in Seoul in September 2018.

This list only highlighted six songs of Day6 — a challenge, to be honest — but the band has so much more to offer than what this article can contain. Check out the amazing discography of the band and dive into the most beautiful feeling of listening to their songs as we countdown to ten more days before Day6 hits Manila with the sweetest chaos at the SMART Araneta Coliseum on November 23!

  • Artist Spotlight: Getting To Know The Electronic Duo HONNE

Artist Spotlight: Getting To Know The Electronic Duo HONNE

Just under twelve months ago HONNE – aka singer Andy and producer James – released their debut single, Warm On A Cold Night, a lusty, nocturnal electro-R&B jam that sent the internet into a steamy stupor. Seemingly out of nowhere, and with limited fuss, two mysterious part-time music teachers from Bow in East London perfectly encapsulated those clammy, slightly drunken summer nights. It also marked out a new act who’s sound had arrived fully formed, their unique blend of warm electronic experimentation, vintage soul and massive pop hooks blending together to form something wonderfully timeless. “People struggle to draw a really direct comparison,” states James of HONNE’s sound. “I was relieved when loads of our friends said they didn’t know what it sounded like.” In fact, rather than straight up musical comparisons, the band rightly prefers to liken their cinematic music to a specific mood or feeling. “We always say it’s the kind of music you might listen to on a late night drive in the summer through the city with the windows down, cool breeze coming in. Bathed in the city lights.” Perfect.

HONNE’s creation was the perfect example of happenstance, the pair meeting while at University. In fact, they were the first person each of them ran into, with their friendship bonded over a mutual love for Radiohead. “That was around six years ago now,” remembers Andy. “Within three days we were writing music together. We had a mutual love for music and different artists.” Spending nights writing and recording, the immediate and successful musical bond between the pair was in contrast to their musical pasts. “We were both in terrible bands when we were 13 or 14,” laughs James. “But Andy played me some of the songs he’d made at home, songs he was singing on, and I’d never met a male singer who liked the same sort of music as me. We’re both from the west country – Andy’s near Yeovil and I’m from near Salisbury. So in places so small it felt like no one else liked that same music.” Musically influenced initially by everything from the Arctic Monkeys (“lyrically there is a little bit of that story-telling type feel still in there,” says James) to vintage soul (check their cover of Darondo’s Didn’t I) to electronic pioneers like Apparat and Modeselektor to pure pop like Michael Jackson, the pair worked hard to finesse their sound. “It took a little while. It wasn’t until 18 months ago that we stumpled upon it”, says James. “A lot of time was spent on trial and error and learning how to do stuff and working on our production and songwriting skills,” adds Andy. “Even though we love electronic music we still wanted normal songwriting to be in there and to make sure the songs go somewhere and mean something to someone.”

This meticulous eye for detail in their music also transposed onto their name, HONNE. “It’s a Japanese word that means ‘true feelings’, so ones you only share with your closest companions,” explains Andy. “We happened upon the word and instantly fell in love with its meaning and we felt that it fit with what we’re writing. I’ve been there a few times now and I love it. My girlfriend lived there for about six months so I’ve spent a lot of time there.” This sense of communicating illicit desires and deeply personal moments is so ingrained in HONNE’s ethos that even their label name, Tatemae, is linked to it. “Tatemae is the counter word,” continues Andy. “HONNE is your true feelings shared with someone special, and your tatemae is what you give out in person to everyone else. So the label is the public outlet for our personal songs.”

While work had been going on behind the scenes for a little while (“We had 15 songs before we showed them to anyone,” says James), the duo wasted no time in getting their songs out there once they’d struck musical gold. The aforementioned Warm On A Cold Night and the stuttering majesty of second single All In The Value were released by Super Recordings (who were also responsible for early releases by Bondax and AlunaGeorge), all before a single gig had been played. “At the time we felt that Warm On A Cold Night epitomised our sound,” James explains of why that was the first song people should hear. “We were talking about a couple of options and we felt like the first song should be how we mean to go on, as in ‘this is HONNE’. It was our statement. As soon as we wrote that one we felt it was a good representation of us.” Following its release the pair played their debut, sold-out, gig at the Seabright Arms last November, then another sold-out one at the Electrowerks the following February, signing to Atlantic Records in-between. The latter meant they could finally leave their jobs as music teachers to focus fully on the band. “Andy was a music technician in a school in London and I was a guitar teacher in the same school and a few others as well,” explains James. “We started doing HONNE full time last Christmas. We enjoyed our jobs, but the aim was always to stop teaching and do music full time, it was all we thought about. I’d even write HONNE songs when kids didn’t turn up for lessons”.

The first release under their new imprint Tatemae Recordings (via Atlantic) was the Coastal Love EP, a four-track symphony of “baby-making music” (as they put it) and slinky soft soul heralded by the gorgeous drift of the fluttering title track, inspired by Andy’s long distance relationship. “It started out with James – before he started the music he already had the title. He wrote the instrumental and sent it over to me. At the time I was in a long distance relationship, so I wrote about that, changing a few details to fit with James’ concept. Then we made it sound a bit more beach-y.” The sultry stylings of their music – “Everyone’s racy aren’t they? Even if they pretend they’re not,” laughs James at one point – is something they put down to the context it’s created in. “I can tell you why it’s got a night time feel and that’s because we were writing a lot at night,” explains Andy. “We’d get home from school and then write songs in the evening and into the night and then get up and go to school.” That’s not to say it’s all lush atmospherics, tactile beats and soft cooing, mind you. “I feel like there’s three sides to HONNE; the slower, more romantic stuff; the more night time, sexy feel and then the more upbeat and more summery songs,” says James. “We like doing a mixture of all of that.” In fact, their next single, the playful funk of Loves The Jobs You Hate, is musically more upbeat, a sweary rail against the frustrations and limitations of modern life centred around someone they’re still in contact with. “In terms of the lyrical content, some of it’s based on personal experiences but others are based on other people’s experiences too,” explains Andy tactfully. “There’s been a couple of awkward scenarios where something’s happened to a friend and I’ve written a song about it and they’ve gone ‘oh hang on a minute’.”

Perhaps the key element to HONNE’s music is its warmth; the way it seems to perfectly encapsulate a moment, while still being open and relatable to the listener. Lyrical observers and studio perfectionists, and with a burgeoning live reputation thanks to another recent series of sold out shows (in London, Paris and Berlin in May), the pair have built a hermetically sealed musical world all of their own, just twelve months into their life as a proper band. As work continues on their debut album, it already feels like HONNE have set out their stall as one of British music’s leading (night) lights.

  • Iron Maiden To Headline “PULP Summer Slam XX: Judgement Day”

Iron Maiden To Headline “PULP Summer Slam XX: Judgement Day”

PULP Summer Slam, Southeast Asia’s longest running metal festival, celebrates an unbroken two decades of live music performances and is still the only contemporary Philippine-based annual music festival and recognized by the prestigious Festival 250.

Once again ranking on the worldwide list, PULP Summer Slam has moved up to #225 from its previous rankings of #229 in 2017 and #249 in 2016. Festival 250 is an annual project from Festival Insights, an online B2B publication focused on the international festival industry.

Promoter Vernon Go says that this will likely be the final PULP Summer Slam and has aptly given it an ominous theme: JUDGEMENT DAY. “I believe having IRON MAIDEN headline our 20th year of PULP Summer Slam is not only historic but certainly poetic for metal fans,” says Go. “It is certainly a beautiful ending to two decades of metal mayhem in the Philippines, especially since it is their only Southeast Asian stop and the only East Asia tour date outside of Japan.”

“We’re delighted to finally come to the Philippines and present the Legacy of the Beast Tour to all our fans there! We’re immensely proud of this show and we’ve had great reactions from the many fans who came to see us in Europe, North America, Mexico, and South America,” comments Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson. “The production for the PULP Summer Slam is exactly the same as the other shows on this tour so far and is based on our mobile game The Legacy of the Beast which basically takes various incarnations of Eddie into many different Maiden Worlds. This inspired us to put together a stage show to take our fans through different Worlds and experiences set to appropriate songs,” he adds, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect during their headlining performance at the Slam. Hailed by global rave reviews, the tour’s production and setlist is inspired by Maiden’s free to play mobile game of the same name which is available on iOS and Android platforms.

“We feel we ended up with a very strong and well-balanced set mixing songs we haven’t played in many years like “Flight Of Icarus”, “Sign Of The Cross”, and “The Clansman” with songs we know the fans want to hear like “The Trooper”, “2 Minutes To Midnight”, “The Number Of The Beast”, “Fear Of The Dark”, “Run To The Hills”, “Hallowed Be Thy Name”, and others, reflecting the journey through the different themes of the show,” bassist and founding member Steve Harris adds, speaking about how the band came up with the tour’s monstrous setlist. “We’re excited to bring this show to Manila because our fans there have never seen these songs performed live before so we can’t wait to play them.”

Fans have been anticipating the ticket prices for this monumental event that also features four other incredible metal bands: Death Angel, BABYMETAL, Dragonforce, and KING 810.

Happening on May 16, 2020 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, tickets to PULP Summer Slam XX: Judgement Day will go on sale on Novemvber 30, 2019 at 12 noon through SM Tickets and AirAsia Red Tix. Tickets are priced as follows:
