7 TXT B-Sides We Need to Hear Live

TXT consistently produces excellent works that contribute to their impressive catalog and make up an exceptional career — from their debut to their most current release.

TXT

It is no secret how the debut of TOMORROW X TOGETHER, commonly known as TXT, took the K-Pop world into a frenzy. The first boy group to debut in six years under Big Hit Entertainment (now, Big Hit Music) since BTS, TXT delivered more than the world asked for as they set record after record with their debut extended play, The Dream Chapter: Star.

Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and HueningKai broke the record for the most-viewed K-Pop debut music video within 24 hours for a boy group and the most-liked K-Pop debut music video within 24 hours with the music video of “Crown”. The single also debuted at the top of the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, while The Dream Chapter: Star set the record for the highest-charting debut album on Billboard by any male K-Pop group.

With the success of their debut EP, it is no longer surprising that TXT swept new artist and rookie awards from several award-giving bodies. They are the 10th best-selling Korean act in Gaon Chart history within the last ten years — a feat they achieved only three years after their debut. Cementing their position as one of the top K-Pop groups in their generation, the boy group is unstoppable in taking over charts, selling out concert venues, and putting their name on the top of the game.

Another First with TXT

And TXT is set to add another milestone in their career as Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and HueningKai make their way to the Philippine concert stage for the first time with back-to-back ACT: LOVE SICK in Manila concerts at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on October 27 and 28.

Only a week to go before the big day, allow us to countdown to the special day ahead with a list of seven B-sides we are earnestly praying to hear TXT perform live.

Blue Orangeade

The Dream Chapter: Star, 2019

We begin this list with a B-side from their debut extended play, The Dream Chapter: Star — “Blue Orangeade”. Produced by Slow Rabbit and written by the Big Hit Music producer together with Moonshine, Cazzi Opeia, Ellen Berg, and Supreme Boi, “Blue Orangeade” opens the EP with its energetic beats.

The song’s fundamental message—that a relationship can flourish despite seeming differences—is conveyed through a track that is chock-full of clever allusions. The song’s title, which features the complementary hues of blue and orange that also produce the sharpest contrast when combined, makes the main topic even more obvious.

Magic Island

The Dream Chapter: Magic, 2019

TXT did not slow down after their great debut; rather, they kept their motors running in preparation for another release that will shock the K-Pop scene. October 2019 saw the boy group return with their first studio album, The Dream Chapter: Magic.

And in this list, we highlight the sixth track in the album — “Magic Island”. Crystal Bell of MTV named the song one of The Best K-Pop B-sides Of 2019, describing it as a subdued track that inevitably lulls you into a feeling of deep serenity.

Maze in the Mirror

The Dream Chapter: Eternity, 2020

A track from the second extended play of TXT, The Dream Chapter: Eternity, “Maze in the Mirror” is the first official release of the boy group that was co-written by Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and HueningKai, together with Slow Rabbit. Beomgyu also collaborated with Slow Rabbit on the song’s production.

The core of TXT’s comradery was captured in the song, along with recollections from their competitive training years before their debut. In an interview with Billboard, Beomgyu shared that the incident that inspired the title was when, under pressure from intense training, they began to notice someone else in the mirrors who appeared to be lost in a maze. The words of this song display highly deep feelings, as evidenced by the lyrical references to attempting to locate oneself after being lost and little pleas to keep going.

I’m sure all the members agree but, personally, I had been under a lot of pressure to do well because I joined the company later than the other members did. What I felt then was, as I was practicing singing and dancing, I started to see somebody else from my own reflection in the mirror. It didn’t seem like the “me” I used to know. I felt like I was trapped in a maze. That’s how “Maze in the Mirror” came to be.

We Lost the Summer

Minisode 1: Blue Hour, 2020

“We Lost the Summer” saw the collaboration of TXT with English singer-songwriter Charlie XCX. The song, which served as the third track in the Minisode 1: Blue Hour extended play, retells the days and everything lost as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic (with an upbeat cadence), comparing the lockdown to a winter when everything appeared to be frozen in time.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Beomgyu shared, “Many teenagers could no longer go to school and hang out with each other, passing notes, sharing earbuds, and so on. It’s our story but it’s still a subject that teens all over the world can relate to. It’s the teen perspective and we wanted to address it through our music.”

Anti-Romantic

The Chaos Chapter: Freeze, 2021

Probably one of the most well-known and lauded B-sides of TXT, “Anti-Romantic” opens the boy group’s second studio album, The Chaos Chapter: Freeze. Sara Delgado of Teen Vogue described the song as a classic R&B-infused soft ballad and as the “older, wiser, and substantially more pessimistic sister “to another TXT song, “20cm”, from The Dream Chapter: Magic. “If one sings of innocent love, born between school walls, the other ditches rom-coms and love songs altogether,” she wrote.

MOA Diary (Dubaddu Wari Wari)

The Chaos Chapter: Fight or Escape, 2021

Coming as an additional track in the repackaged version of The Chaos Chapter: Freeze, “MOA Diary (Dubaddu Wari Wari)” is the eighth track in The Chaos Chapter: Fight or Escape album. Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and HueningKai contributed to writing the lyrics for the song.

“MOA Diary (Dubaddu Wari Wari)” is the boy group’s official fan song. With lyrics promising to be there until the sweeter end, every MOA deserves to hear their favorite boys sing this song live at least once in their lifetime and reminisce together about their journey with TXT.

Opening Sequence

Minisode 2: Thursday’s Child

“Opening Sequence”, a gritty rap-rock hybrid that starts Minisode 2: Thursday’s Child off on a considerably darker tone than its predecessor, portrays a tug-of-war within the mind of a conflicted person following an event that has left them mentally scarred and serves as a symbol for the first stage of mourning, denial.

Prepare yourself, Philippine MOAs, to see TXT and hear a portion of their remarkable repertoire that they have built over the years, including self-written and self-produced compositions that tell stories and convey the feelings and circumstances of this generation into words and music.
