A new kind of tide is set to hit Philippine shores this month. Since their inception in 1998, Christian rock band Relient K has toured around the globe. 15 years and nine albums later, they are finally stopping by our 7,107 islands. They’ve definitely come a long way from where they started in Ohio.

The band has been together for more than a decade and a half. In that span of time they’ve bagged a few awards and nominations, lost a few members, and of course, evolved as musicians. Those curious with the origin of their name, it stems from one of the vehicles of guitarist Matt Hoopes, a Plymouth Reliant K.

They are currently composed of vocalist, guitarist and pianist Matt Thiessen; guitarist Matt Hoopes; guitarist, banjo, bell, and omnichord player Jon Schneck; bassist John Warne; and drummer Ethan Luck. The latter three were unable to join the spring tour this year, so whether or not they will be back for their upcoming shows in Manila is still not known.

Recognized for injecting humorous allusions with their alternative rock sound with songs like My Girlfriend, Pressing On and Hello McFly, Relient K also shows their more serious musical side with their later albums. Another huge factor in their music is their ability to incorporate their faith in their songs. For first time listeners, here’s a short list of songs to check out: Be My Escape, Forget and Not Slow Down, High of 75, Sadie Hawkins Dance, and Don’t Blink. The list doesn’t have to end there. If those songs appeal to you, it’s up to you to venture and find your own Relient K favorites.
