  • Dear Evan Hansen extends its Manila run until October 5

Dear Evan Hansen extends its Manila run until October 5

Manila โ€“ Due to the overwhelming response from the Filipino audience, GMG Productions announced today the final extension of the critically acclaimed, Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen in Manila. The production will now run from September 4 to October 5, 2025, at The Theatre at Solaire.

GMG Productionsโ€™ CEO Carlos Candal shared, “Bringing Dear Evan Hansen to Manila has been a long-awaited moment, and the response has been everything we hoped for and more. Weโ€™re happy to announce this final extension so even more audiences can experience the impact of this production.”

Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of Evan, an anxious high school student longing for a sense of belonging. When a misunderstanding spirals into something far bigger than he ever imagined, he faces an impossible decision: tell the truth and lose everything or embrace a lie that brings him closer to the life he has always dreamed of. As the story unfolds, Evan navigates the complexities of truth, connection, and self-acceptance in a world that often feels isolating.

The UK touring production of Dear Evan Hansen is produced by ATG Productions, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Nottingham Playhouse. Featuring music by the Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Oscar-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a book by Steven Levenson, Dear Evan Hansen has been recognized as one of the most impactful musicals of the past decade. It has won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

Director Adam Penford also shares, โ€œDear Evan Hansen has thrilled audiences on both sides of the Atlantic since it first premiered in 2016. Evan’s powerful story grips and moves people told through a captivating script and musical score. This exciting UK and International tour production offers the opportunity to reexamine some of its contemporary themes and present this brand-new version to more people.”

  • Come From Away: Catch the Hype!

Come From Away: Catch the Hype!

The multi-award-winning musical, which took Broadway, West End and even the Tiktok crowd by storm. has found its way to the Philippines, and weโ€™re here to tell you: itโ€™s definitely worth the hype.

Once again, UnionBank has partnered with GMG Productions to bring another memorable musical. Their entry this time is something you should experience for yourself.

With music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away, in its core, is an uplifting story about compassion amidst a desolate situation. Based on true events, it tells the story of a small town called Gander, Newfoundland when the United States closed its airspace during 9/11. 6,600 people from 38 different planes found themselves whisked away to the town that was to be their refuge for days.

Meanwhile, the locals, befuddled as they were, went the extra mile to welcome them โ€“ providing their basic essentials (food, accommodation, phone calls, etc.) as well as giving them the quintessential Newfoundland experience (booze, a stadium-sized barbeque party, the Screech In and just their pure hospitality). Amidst the growing anxiety and panic about what the world has come to, they all gradually find solace in one another, establishing genuine human connections.

Why should you watch the musical?

Philippine Concerts attended the Gala Night at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater on June 6, and we can tell you that Come From Away had become a global success for lots of good reasons.

In its 100-minute runtime โ€“ without any intermission โ€“ the musical was able to make the audience laugh, cry, and laugh then cry again. The story was simply heartwarming, and it was packed with enough humor, drama and tension to reel you in.

This was made possible by the dynamic group of characters brought to life by the talented all-Filipino ensemble that painted a comprehensive picture of thousands of confused and agitated passengers. Due to the nature of the story, each actor had to play a multitude of roles, and they enabled each one at the snap of a finger.

Directed by Michael Williams, Filipino talents took the helm of the production. Carla Guevara Laforteza stood out in her role as Hannah Oโ€™Rourke, a mother who was extremely worried for her firefighter son in New York. Herheartrending performance of โ€œI Am Hereโ€ was easily one that captured the hearts of the audience.  Dubbed as the First Lady of Philippine Theater, Menchu Lauchengco-Yuloโ€™s solo for โ€œMe and the Skyโ€ greatly exemplified the pride and passion of her character Beverley Bass, the first female captain of American Airlines.

There was also Sheila Francisco as the motherly Beulah Davis, a teacher in Gander who was always on her toes, attentive to each guestโ€™s needs. Stephen Cadd, who played Claude Elliot, the mayor of Gander, was a steadfast source of laughs. George Schulz and Topper Fabregas were a joy to witness as the gay couple Kevin T. and Kevin J. Caisa Borromeo gently portrayed the eagerness of Bonnie Harris, the animal welfare specialist who gave the much needed care for the animals on-board the planes. Cathy Azanza-Dy and Rycharde Everley were Diane and Nick, two souls that found romance in the most unexpected place. Watch out for their rapid-fire retorts, the way they seamlessly made a 360-degree shift instantly, a fascinating feat to witness upfront.

Come From Away is a refreshing take on musicals, as it placed the primary focus on the narrative and the music. From the get-go, โ€œWelcome to the Rockโ€ was a roaring invitation to Gander, propelled by the succession of fast-paced tracks like โ€œ38 Planesโ€ and โ€œBlanket and Beddingsโ€. When the mood turned sombre, songs like โ€œLead Us Out of the Nightโ€, โ€œPrayerโ€ and โ€œSomething Missingโ€ were notable emotional clinchers.

The stage was on the minimalist side, but the subtle changes made it easy to discern what was happening โ€“ the slight movements of the chair, the appearance of the arch, the turning of the signs on top. As the time went on, youโ€™ll find yourself hanging on every word from the cast, feeling how their anxiety shifted to openness and eventually, grace. The script was full of wit and humor, not a dull moment for the crowd.

Most importantly, Come From Away had its heart on the right place, with its inspiring message of human compassion โ€“ the mere act of extending help unconditionally in the face of tragedy, something that we can easily empathize with as Filipinos. It embodied what a community can do to lighten each otherโ€™s burdens, to find light in the darkest circumstances โ€“ commodities that the world needs more of at this time.

Be sure to catch Come From Away until June 29, 2025 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater!

  • Miss Saigon’s Timeless Themes Find a home in the heart of Manila!

Miss Saigon’s Timeless Themes Find a home in the heart of Manila!

“Miss Saigon” The widely acclaimed musical that tells the tragic love story between an American GI named Chris and a Vietnamese girl named Kim during the Vietnam War. Set in the tumultuous backdrop of Saigon in the 1970s, the musical explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the harrowing impact of war on individuals caught in its crossfire.

Manila has been a significant stop for “Miss Saigon” productions since the Philippines, with its own history intertwined with the Vietnam War era, that provides a unique perspective for audiences experiencing the show in Manila. The emotional depth of the storyline resonates with many Filipinos, given their own experiences of war, love, and sacrifice.

    1. Relevance โ€“ During the press conference, the cast discussed how the show is still relevant in 2024, saying, “We’re still seeing the emotional tolls of war going on in the world, and this shows better after 35 years, and we’re still seeing how relationships are shaped and affected by war, and so I think it’s something that we wish we weren’t seeing anymore. When we turn on the TV and see what’s going on around the world, it’s still happening. We still haven’t learned our lessons. We are still living in a world of war. The show flawlessly staged this scene. Kim, Chris, and The Engine-Queer were able to put the audience into the emotion that the show required.

    1. Empowering and Inclusiveness and the Asian Representation โ€“ As Claude-Michel Schรถnberg said, when he came to the Philippines, he heard a voice he had never heard before. It’s beautiful, and it’s amazing! Without the Philippines, the show will not open. You were born into a soup of talents. All thanks to this comment, and thanks to Miss Saigon for putting the Philippines on the map. The Asian representation in the cast was overflowing, as Seann Miley Moore said, Asian excellence and this cast are giving Slay-Asian pride. Even at the stage during the opening night, it was amassed, making each Filipino audience feel the big Asian pride. “I am actually involved, and this culture is quite close to my heart,” Nigel Huckle shared. “When I was really little, I lived in Singapore, and I had a nanny who lives in Ilo-Ilo. In 2016, we brought her to see the show, and we reunited after almost 20 years, and she’s coming here again to see the show!” I was nurtured by a Filipino so early in my life, and I’m learning and loving being in the Philippines.”
    1. Creativity and Freedom โ€“ During the press conference, the cast revealed that they had the freedom to fully embody their roles, setting a promising stage. Seann Miley Moore, who played the engineer, definitely steals the show by giving some tagalog quips! He added his own flair and a touch of Filipino authenticity to 1 of the segments. The cast members’ performances were heartfelt and captivating, taking the audience into the emotional journey of each of the characters. The set design, costumes, and choreography all come together seamlessly to transport the audience to the war-torn streets of Saigon.

Manila audiences should brace themselves for a rollercoaster of emotions, from the passionate love between Chris and Kim to the heart-wrenching realities of war and its aftermath. The musical’s powerful message about the enduring power of love in the face of adversity will strike a chord, especially for a country that understands all too well the struggles and sacrifices of wartime love. The musical’s impact goes beyond entertainment, as it will leave a lingering sense of awe and reverence. The musical’s legacy lives on as this is not just a theatrical production โ€“ it is a powerful reflection of the universal themes of love, sacrifice, and resilience that resonate with audiences and serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of storytelling.

The cast of the Miss Saigon Asian Tour is led by Abigail Adriano as Kim, Seann Miley Moore as the Engineer, Nigel Huckle as Chris, Laurence Mossman as Thuy, Kiara Dario as Gigi, Sarah Morrison as Ellen, and Lewis Francis as John. Miss Saigon’s Manila stop runs from March 23 to May 12, 2024.
