    Evanescence and Bush Live in Manila concert review

    The crowd got a taste of dark epic rock from Evanescence and 90s rock hits from Bush as both bands gave back to back performances last February 19, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. After 1 ½ decade British rock band Bush with front man Gavin Rossdale returned to Manila and performed their tunes showing that they’re still in the business.

    The band released their first album in 10 years called Sea Of The Memories.  With the band’s name at the background, Rossdale together with his band mates took the stage at exactly 8PM and immediately nailed their first song called Machinehead followed by Baby Come Home, both of these songs were received well by the audience. Early in the set, they played one of their most successful singles The Chemicals Between Us, the reaction from the crowd was great and loud.  It’s like there’s no signs of a hiatus from this band.

    Gavin interacted well to the audience, his energy was top the notch and recognized the crowd very much. They did not disappoint the fans by performing hits such as All My Life and Greedy Fly. His voice was not drowned out by the guitars, the live audience was able to witness his soaring vocals throughout the show. One of the highlights was when Gavin went into the audience.  He left the stage and ran through the entire venue reaching the hands of the fans and singing up to the upper levels. The crowd at the upper box A and B were visibly enjoying his performance. The concert did end well as they performed The Beatles’ Come Together and finished the entire set with their classics Glycerine and Come Down.  Bush thanked the audience for supporting them for years and left the stage.

    After a half hour of preparation, the main act Evanescence was ready to take stage, as the lights dimmed, the audience shouted with energy and anticipation. They kicked off their show with What You Want from their self-titled third album Evanescence.  The excitement of the audience was totally ecstatic. Up next was Going Under from their multi-platinum selling debut album Fallen. Amy Lee’s operatic voice dominated the big dome. Their third song of the night was The Other Side and immediately followed by Weight of the World. Unlike Bush, Evanescence rarely talked to their audience. Still, Amy delivered with incredible amount of energy, hypnotizing and soaring vocal style, best demonstrated on their ballads My Heart is Broken and Immortal.  She sat down with her piano and did three straight songs, Lost in Paradise, My Heart Is Broken and Lithium.  It’s so great seeing the softer side of Amy on her piano.

    They trended ten times on Twitter after the announcement was made. Their song “Don’t give up on ‘Us’” made it to number one on the local radio charts. In their first-ever production, Karpos Multimedia Inc. teamed up with Pulp Live Productions to bring in John, Garrett, Kennedy, Pat, and Jared to the Philippines for the first stop of their Pioneer tour.

    As the band was having their press conference over at Discovery Suites, die-hard Maine-iacs were already lining the halls leading to SM North Sky Dome, determined to get prime spots in the venue.

    “It’s just amazing,” said drummer Pat Kirch in response to Philippine Concerts’ question on how it feels to be back in Manila. Frontman John O’Callaghan acknowledged that it was the Philippine fans that brought them back, especially after such a warm welcome at their show last year. (more…)

The concert was a great experience mainly because of the unique collaboration between some of the bands and artists like Wolfgang with Gloc-9, Sandwich with Jay Durias, 6CycleMind with Eunice (of Gracenote) and Kleggy (of Banda ni Kleggy), Sponge Cola eith Chicosci and Itchyworms with Ebe Dancel.

    Avril Lavigne performed her 3rd successful concert in Manila last February 16, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Presented by Wilbros Live and Midas Promotions, Manila was the 2nd to the last stop of her Black Star Tour. The venue was packed with glowing stars from the fans. The venue was like a small galaxy full of stars.  She is still look young, beautiful, talented and has massive of fans that made a concert a sold out event and performed a 75-minute set that included all of her greatest and recent hits.

    The night started out with beats and hits from Somedaydream exactly at 8PM. Good thing it was on time because a lot of concert goers had to go to school next day.  A song called Black Star opened the show for her Manila tour same on what she did on her latest album Goodbye Lullaby. The stage lights appeared and Avril Lavigne went up the stage as well with complete live band, holding a neon green light up star while happily waving to the huge crowd. As expected, the fans went wild and shouted like crazy. The amazement of the entire Smart Araneta Coliseum was unbelievable. She immediately shifted to her up-tempo and the first hit single from Goodbye Lullaby, What The Hell. The 3rd song of the night was one of her biggest hits Sk8er Boi, during this performance the energy of Avril lifted the energy of the audience wherein everyone was jumping while singing this song. She performed another greatest hit He Wasn’t which was from her sophomore album Under My Skin. She belted out with her 6th song of the night called Alice, an OST from hit movie Alice In Wonderland. She hit all the high notes from the start up to the very end of this song.

    The massive fans knew every word and sang along as she performed songs from her latest album such as Wish You Were Here and Smile plus old favorite rock ballad When You’re Gone which was one of the highlights of the night. Who can forget her number 1 hit Girlfriend, this song was received very well wherein everyone was singing their favorite part “Hey hey you you”. One of loudest audience participation happened during the refrain of I’m With You. She gave the fans to sing-along the refrain part over and over again like 3-4 times. Everyone was laughing and enjoying the moment. The way the song Airplanes shifted into My Happy Ending was great as well. (more…)

    Filipino-American, singer, songwriter and YouTube sensation AJ Rafael ended his Red Roses Southeast Asian Tour last January 18, 2012 in Manila and performed 2 shows together with his band at the Music Museum.  Initially it was a one night show only but due to demand of the public, promoter Monsoon Productions added one more show (5PM & 8PM). Thanks to YouTube for being part of his success to make independent artist like AJ Rafael to enter the music industry and share his stuff. It was my first time to watch a concert here and I can say that there are literally no bad seats at all. I didn’t know beforehand how personal and intimate AJ and his band would get with the audience and allows food to be brought in or delivered. His concert has been long anticipated by many of his Filipino fans. The excitement of the young fans and teen at hearts were pretty obvious to finally see the man who has 393,000 YouTube subscribers.  Some of them brought personalized banners hoping that AJ would notice their efforts.

    We’re treated first with the lovely music from acoustic sensations Krissy and Ericka. They performed mash ups of Superbass and California King Bed and followed by two of their original compositions and another pop mash up. There’s a short break to prepare for the set of AJ Rafael and his band. A video played on screen showing the adventures of AJ Rafael, Noah Bartfield, Andrew Rhim, Danny Morledge, Krissy and Ericka. The audience went wild during their first appearance on stage. It was roughly a 90-minute show full of extraordinary talent from AJ Rafael and his band. The crowd was definitely into it. Fans looked at each other in amazement. That was the moment that people realized how much stage presence the band truly had, like a solid brotherhood. He hit all the songs that brought him to reach what he is right now. He is so down to earth and treated the fans like his long time friends who are following his journey through social media like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Tumblr. He touched the songs like Emma Watson, Red Roses, Sparks Fly (with Krissy and Ericka), Without You, 500 Days, She Was Mine, We Could Happen, Here All Alone and When We Say (JuiceBox), Disney Medley and the best and most unexpected addition to the set was my personal favorite Showstopper. They waived their audience with more than good music but an epic experience! (more…)

    Pop-punk rockers Simple Plan brought its humor and talented live show last January 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum as part of their Get Your Heart On Tour. The stage kicked off with rockin’ sets by Kamikazee where they played some of their hits like “Narda,” “Halik,” “Ambisyoso,” “Martyr Nyebera”  and “Tsinelas.”  They did a good job of warming up the crowd.

    Californian pop-rock hitmakers and Grammy winner Train returned to Manila last December 7, 2011 for their once in a lifetime ride at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

    The show opened with 6 Cyclemind and performed a set of their OPM hits. The organizer arranged the set for the much-awaited performance of Train immediately after the last song from 6 Cyclemind. Train went on at exactly 9PM after the steam engine and train whistle sound effects. Pat opened their Save Me, San Francisco Tour in Manila with Parachute which got the crowd of over 5,000 fans energized for the entire set. The 2nd song of the night was one of their biggest hits called If It’s Love while taking photos of the audience.

    They also treated the fans with their cover of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing. During this song, Pat caught 2 girls singing in the crowd and immediately invited to go on stage to sing with him. One of the girls nailed the performance and wowed the entire arena including Pat.

    The band also performed She’s On Fire wherein the vocalist picked a bunch of ladies in the crowd and each them received a shirt from the band. Selected girls were asked to show their talents through dancing and Pat made a deal that he will give a signed guitar to one lucky lady that will impress him on stage and he actually did, one of ladies received a signed black guitar from Pat.     Smart Araneta Coliseum was packed again last October 30 for a soulful and acoustic music on a Sunday night. The popular US singer-songwriter and Grammy winner Jason Mraz performed for almost 2 hours of pure talent together with his long-time friend and percussionist Toca Rivera. We never thought that the acoustic set-up of this concert would be possible enough to fill the coliseum but once again Dayly Entertainment brought up a huge success and organized this event that drew more than 12,000 attendees singing, dancing and stealing their own ways into Jason’s music.

    The coliseum was full of excitement, a lot of fans brought signs/posterboards like “Love the Jesus look Jason” , “Jason thank you for being my birthday gift” , “Jason, you changed our lives. Let’s hang out!” The evening opened with a song called “She’s The Bomb” , Jason Mraz was casual, wearing a yellow bandana and a T-shirt with a word PEACE and he wanted the crowd to feel as comfortable as he was onstage. The acoustic evening was truly made for the fans, he’s such an amazing crowd pleaser and makes you feel as if you were at the small venue. Mraz kept strumming along through tunes such as the “The Dynamo of Volition” and “Live High”. Unexpectedly he performed one of the Beatles’ classics “Across The Universe” and a cover Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon”. In between songs, Mraz engaged the crowd, leading call and response chants and making jokes. The performance of “Lucky” was one crowd-pleasing throwback and the fans screamed again on the top of their lungs and performed together with Mr A-Z with 2 of his biggest hits “You And I Both” and “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)”. He left the stage after his performance of “Details In The Fabric” and “Life Is Wonderful” making the audience chanting his name and “We want more, more, more”.

    As the night drew to a close and it was time for an encore, Jason and Toca came back with songs called “Rescue”, “Butterfly”, “The Freedom Song” and finished what appeared to be his final song called “I’m Yours” which brought down the house as he played with his guitar, making it a pure presentation of a musical genius.

    The set-up was perfect for an acoustic concert, it was not too flashy with 2 large screens. The sound was superb, the live singing voice was crystal clear. The energy of the crowd was unbelievable from start-finish, the ease and smooth sailing of the entire acoustic concert was amazing and everyone felt like part of the show.

  • An All Time High Moment To Remember


    Pop-punk rockers All Time Low brought its energetic live show to the Smart-Araneta Coliseum for their Dirty Work Tour in Manila last September 22, 2011. Front-act Typecast took the stage with 6 songs and noticed that the crowd was not familiar with their music. After Typecast, the set change for All Time Low that took nearly 15 minutes.

    The most requested band finally went up the stage with Art Of The State for the intro song and Do You Want Me (Dead?), as I expected the crowd went wild and definitely into it. PinoyHustlers looked at each other in amazement. The opening peformance was immediately followed with songs called Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t) and Jasey Rae making the audience more energetic. It was clearly obvious how much it meant to Alex, Jack, Rian and Zack to be given the opportunity to play in Manila for the first time. They’re surprised for the reaction of the crowd and even said that ‘best show ever’. During the concert I noticed that there were moments I barely hear the live singing voice of Alex primarily because the bass and drums dominated the sounds. In spite of this, I have to say I was impressed with the amount of energy they gave to their Pinoy fans who waited for years to see them live, thanks to Dayly Entertainment and Ovation Productions for granting the request of Pinoy Hustlers. The band also performed Forget About It and Poppin’ Champagne and their latest single Time Bomb. Their sense of humor came through well on Guts, Six Feet Under The Stars and most especially on I Feel Like Dancin. Coffee Shop Soundtrack and Sick Little Games were the 10th and 11th song and still the band’s energy was superb. The crowd and band’s engagement was impressive as Alex and Jack moved around the stage, while the audience kept throwing bras to the stage and Alex kept repeating how much he loved Manila and wanted everyone to get crazy.   • Incubus Rocked The Big Dome

    July 28, 2011 Thursday, Smart-Araneta Coliseum was packed. The sold out show also featured a set from the band Franco and they started the show right on track to warm up the audience. It took over 20 minutes before Incubus hit the stage and it was worth the wait.

    The lights dimmed and the band step off the stage, mobile phones lit up the venue, the crowd began to scream, and Incubus’ amazing show began. They started their set with the very energetic and one of the favorites Megalomaniac followed by one of their biggest hits Wish You Were Here. During their opening song we noticed that Mike was having trouble with his guitar and we’re surprised when he smashed the guitar but he managed to comeback immediately using another one. Members of the crowd are jumping, screaming, singing and head-banging as well The combined energy of the songs, the band and the audience was undeniably great. They continued with their known crowd-pleasers like Consequence, Pardon Me, Anna Molly and Love Hurts. Incubus has unforgettable stage presence, Brandon’s interaction with the audience was entertaining, they kept talking to the crowd, bantering and keeping it fun. Circles and Look Alive were the 7th and 8th song and Boyd’s voice was still rocking out. The 9th song Promises, Promises is from their latest album If Not Now, When. A mellow track and it’s really nice to hear a different sound from them between all their hits on the set list. The new song, left me with an impression of a more serious and focused Incubus. They also sang The Warmth and one of their most popular tracks Drive both from their 3rd album Make Yourself.  New songs Isadore and Adolescent were also included on the set list. The 20-year old band has never been afraid to experiment, and it paid off. Unexpectedly they performed Glass and my personal favorite Talk Shows On Mute. They also captivated the audience with their 17th song Crow.

    They left the stage for about 2-3 minutes and performed 3 encore songs including I Miss You, In the Company Of Wolves and ending the night with Nice To Know You. Needless to say, they hit a home run with their last song. Brandon’s voice didn’t change until their encore performance. From start to finish the concert was mind blowing. The lights and setup were little bit dim but the sound quality was good and the security was tight. Without a question, the crowd enjoyed them and even gave a standing ovation once the set was complete. They left a crowd of thousands cheering and wanting more.

    The anticipated  and exclusive performance of Miley Cyrus in Asia was held at Mall of Asia Concert Ground. Miley Cyrus: Corazon Gitano Tour in Manila was a huge success. The opening acts were Sam Concepcion and Elmo Magalona. They were entertaining and played songs that the crowd would definitely enjoy like Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and Somebody To Love, Kanye West’s All Of The Lights and Please Don’t Go by Mike Posner.

    The energy of the screaming fans were totally amazing as thousands of Miley fans waited for their idol to appear on stage.  Miley Cyrus got on the stage at 8:50PM dressed in a super hot white jacket outfit w/ a song called Liberty Walk. The Hannah Montana star was full of energy and performed like there’s no tomorrow. She got the audience up on their feet immediately making for a strong start of the show. Then she followed it up with Party In The USA which really drove the crowd wild. Kicking And Screaming and Robot were the 3rd and 4th from her setlist. She couldn’t stop saying “I love you guys” and “thank you for supporting me”. The animations clips flashed onto the billboard sized screen was visually amazing. The most surprising performances of the night were her covers of I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,Cherry Bomb, Bad Reputation from Joann Jett, the unforgettable cover of Poisons’ 80s classic rock ballad Every Rose Has Its Thorn and Nirvana’s Smells Like A Teen Spirit, proving her desire to entertain the parents who brought their kids to her concert. The music was loud, brilliant and she made the audience feel part of the show. She also performed Obsessed, Forgiveness and Love, Fly On The Wall, Scars and her rock anthem 7 Things. She revealed her other side with a song called Can’t Be Tamed. It was a very emotional moment and the time seemed to stop during The Climb as the crowd sang along as if it was their own with the star of the night. She hit every places on the stage so that the audience could see her no matter where they are. After The Climb she was very thankful to the audience ended up with a word “peace” and the crowd started to shout “Miley!” “Miley!” “we want more”.

    Convinced by her fans, Miley came back with a red dress and perfromed See You Again, My Hearts Beats For Love with Philippine Flag on widescreen and closed the show with Who Owns My Heart leaving over 30,000 of her fans with a huge smile who went to see the biggest star on Disney Channel. Everyone moved out of the venue and still mesmerized by the show and it’s star.

    This concert was so well run from beginning to end. The stage set up was very appealing and huge to hold her dancers and her band. The setlist was solid and worth the price of admission ticket. The show knocked around from rock to pop to ballad and blend the set of the stage and styles into one. Miley touched most of the songs that made her a successful musician. A solid voice, amazing connection with the audience and great stage presence. Miley Cyrus is an incredible artist and performer who’ll be around for a long time.

    Mr. Big composed of Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar), Billy Sheehan (bass) and Pat Torpey (drums) rocked the Big Dome last night. The Highlights of the concert were the solos of Paul Gilbert on Guitars and Billy Sheehan on Bass (along with the Justin Bieber pose of Eric Martin) and of course their 2nd encore which they exchanged musical instruments with Gilbert on drums, Martin on guitars, Torpey on bass and Sheehan on vocals.

  • The Script in Manila: A Spectacular Sold-Out Crowd

     

    Pinoys were absolutely amazed with The Script. Emotions ran high on a Saturday night live as the band told the over 16,000 strong crowd how much it meant to them to fill the Araneta Coliseum. We can easily see their Irish eyes smiling from the beginning up to the end of the show. Manila was the band’s last tour in Asia in support of their latest record ‘Science And Faith’, last Saturday they played an incredible show to a sold out Manila crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

    They’ve brought refreshingly unique sound which mixes melodic pop-rock with soul and RnB. There were moments when they sound like U2 and Justin Timberlake.

    The Script went up onto stage with their first track on their sophomore album ‘You Won’t Feel a Thing’ followed by ‘Talk You Down’,then their first big hit and first ever single, ‘We Cry’ was the third song of the night. The vocals were absolutely amazing during ‘If You Ever Come Back’ and ‘Before The Worst’. Danny’s voice was very impressive. Not only his vocals were absolutely flawless, but the energy of all 3 band members plus the unbelievable spirit of the audience. O’Donoghue dominated the stage and the floor during If You See Kay, he’s running from side to side and often joining the crowd, getting up close and personal with female fans. The band sang and performed wonderfully and kept us entertained in between songs with banter between the members, getting camera and taking pics of the audience and explaining what some of the songs meant when they wrote them. My favorite was their stories during their ‘drunk moments’.

    ‘Dead Man Walking’ and ‘Science & Faith’ gave us another flavor from the concert. These 2 songs came from Science and Faith. One of the highlights was the all-time favorite ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ the boys and the audience went high and enjoyed the rapport especially the sing back to the band, they really appreciated a good and honest feedback. At the end of the song we all clapped and Danny was so speechless. The crowd became quiet during the fantastic acoustic version of ‘I’m Yours’. ‘Rusty Halo’ brought us another meaningful song with tempo rock beat. One of the favorite songs of the night ‘For the First Time’ and probably the most euphoric song of the night as everyone was singing along with the band. The Script brought the crowd to a climax with their monster hit ‘Breakeven’

    The Script live in Manila was entertaining from start to finish, the atmosphere was unreal with excellent lightings, balanced and amazing sounds, nice set-up of the stage and massive LED screens, it all hung together so well.

    April 8, 2011 long lines stretched at the Araneta Coliseum. The hit maker Bruno Mars had sold the place out with over 16000 people on a Friday night, did make it clear that Mars is touching people with his music. The opening acts were Juris and Michael Copon. They were great and played songs that are mainstream today such as Sa’yo Lamang, Baby and OMG.

    The singer/songwriter/producer gave the crowd a playful sense of humour and terrific vocals, while repping for the females (‘doo-wop’ grooves) and the fellas (‘hooligan’ joints), Mars’ first Philippine invasion was an impressive success for the rising star. The party atmosphere didn’t die down and he sounded amazing throughout the entire set. Long guitar solos became the norm and Mars was sure to make eye contact with a few fans up front. He played a lot of songs without any stopping to change clothes.The set list included “ The Other Side ” “Count On Me,” “Liquor Store”, “Our First Time”,  “Marry You”,  “Lazy Song” “Billie Jean” and ”I Want You Back” in support of and in tribute to one of his idols Michael Jackson. Bruno Mars also played his solo remixes of his two chart toppers, “Billionaire” and “Nothin’ On You,” were amazingly flipped and energized with the live band’s arrangement and jammed with Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
