Love can be exhilarating, messy and, sometimes, painful. For SB19’s Stell, all of those contradictions come together in “CRAZY,” his latest solo single that turns the rush of falling for someone into a reflection on everything love can teach us.
Released August 21, “CRAZY” captures the feeling of falling deeply for someone and wanting to hold on to every moment. Its accompanying music video, filmed against the backdrop of New York City, gives the song a cinematic setting for its story of romance and emotional vulnerability.
But beneath the song’s dreamy premise is a more complicated understanding of love. Stell approaches “CRAZY” not simply as a song about being swept away by another person, but as an acknowledgment of the emotions—both exhilarating and painful—that inevitably come with opening yourself up to someone.
That meant Stell had to fully surrender to the emotion of the song when bringing it to life. He admitted that preparing for “CRAZY” came with both excitement and nerves, particularly because he wanted to make sure he could deliver its emotional weight authentically.
“You really have to put yourself in that state or emotion to properly deliver the message. You have to genuinely feel the emotion so you can convey the message of the song and make the audience feel that desire for love to return.”
For Stell, that desire is only one part of the equation. Love, he says, also requires an acceptance of the possibility of getting hurt.
“I just want to tell everyone that love is a normal thing to experience. If you’re ready to love someone, you also have to be ready to get hurt. Sometimes, pain is also what teaches us and helps us understand ourselves better, especially when we go through difficult situations.”
It is a sentiment that gives “CRAZY” an emotional dimension beyond its romantic premise. Rather than treating heartbreak as something to simply move past, Stell sees it as an experience capable of changing the person who goes through it.
“Love comes in all forms, so it’s normal to feel pain and sadness, and we shouldn’t be afraid of those feelings. Sometimes, I wonder if I should be thankful that I experienced heartbreak because, at the end of the day, it made me stronger. I learned a lot from that experience, and it helped me understand myself better.”
That vulnerability carried into Stell’s live showcase on August 28, where he brought “CRAZY” to the stage in a free livestream for fans. The showcase also offered a glimpse into the breadth of his solo work, with Stell performing other songs from his repertoire, including his 2024 single “Room” and “Classic.”
The performance placed “CRAZY” alongside songs that have helped establish Stell’s identity as a solo artist, allowing him to explore different shades of his artistry while keeping his vocals and emotional delivery at the center.
For Stell, however, the song ultimately belongs as much to the listener as it does to him. He hopes “CRAZY” can make people revisit their own stories—the unexpected encounters, exhilarating highs, painful lows and unforgettable moments that become part of growing through love.
The goal is not necessarily to romanticize the hurt, but to recognize what remains after it: the lessons learned, the strength gained and the person one becomes along the way.
And when all is said and done, Stell wants listeners to be able to look back at the entire experience and simply say: “Wow, it was a crazy ride.”
