The newly unveiled artwork features an extended Filipino family gathered on a scenic beach, presenting what appears to be a picture-perfect family portrait while hinting at the emotional complexities that lie beneath the surface.

Directed by Cholo H. Laurel, Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon follows Joanne “Jo,” portrayed by Sta. Maria, a television writer on the verge of a career-defining opportunity whose life is upended by the unexpected return of her estranged mother. Forced to confront unresolved childhood trauma, Jo embarks on an emotional journey that explores family, forgiveness, and self-discovery.

Reflecting on her character, Sta. Maria described Jo as “accomplished,” “intelligent,” and “very strong,” adding that the story ultimately asks what shaped her into the person she has become.

Opposite Sta. Maria is Agot Isidro as Paz, Jo’s strong-willed mother whose return from decades of living in New York sets the story in motion. As long-buried secrets gradually unfold, Paz’s past becomes central to the emotional conflict between mother and daughter.

Beyond its emotional core, the film explores the unique dynamics and imperfections of Filipino families, highlighting how shared experiences of love, conflict, misunderstandings, and reconciliation continue to shape relationships across generations.

Speaking during the Next on Netflix Philippines event in February, Laurel credited Netflix for allowing the project to remain true to its creative vision.

“They were willing to give it the creative freedom that we needed to be able to stay faithful to the vision,” he said.

Joining Sta. Maria and Isidro is an ensemble cast that includes Gabriel Lazaro, Gardo Versoza, Ruby Ruiz, RK Bagatsing, Mitch Valdez, and Angel Aquino.

Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon promises an intimate yet relatable portrait of a Filipino family navigating love, resentment, laughter, and regret—emotions that coexist as they rediscover one another despite years of distance.

The film premieres globally on Netflix on Aug. 13.
