  • Johnny Orlando: A Good Ride in Manila

Johnny Orlando: A Good Ride in Manila

Johnny Orlando returns to the Philippines for the Manila leg of The Ride Tour. Presented by Live Nation, the concert was held at 12 Monkeys Music Hall, Estancia, Pasig on November 20.

The 20-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter last visited during the live busking event with Zack Tabudlo at the Venice Grand Canal in August of last year. This time, he has amassed a steady number of fans who were very familiar with the majority of his songs.

The evening began with the opening act GUS (full name: Gus McMillan) who played a good set of his self-composed tracks like “Pluto” and “Big Things Small Seeds”.

When Johnny Orlando made his way to the center stage, the crowd was ecstatic. He started off with a slew of his “Boyfriend”, “Blur” and “You’re Just Drunk” which instantly connected with his fans, many of them singing along to every word.

The Ride’s setlist was a mix of catchy pop-rock tracks about young love – attraction, romance, and heartache – which resonated with the audience of mostly teenagers to young adults. Songs like “If he wanted to, he would”, “What If (I Told You I Like You”), and “leave the light on” were particularly in tune with the crowd. There were also mellow acoustic songs like “coping (1621)”, “all the things can go wrong” “someone will love you better”. Johnny also included a handful of new songs like “A Man Like Me”, “thinking of me” and “party for two”. His renditions of The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” and Katy Perry’s “The One that Got Away” were also appealing additions to the mix.

Johnny’s alluring presence onstage captivated his fans. The stage was set up very close to the audience, meaning that the artists were close enough to reach. Johnny Orlando was very accommodating all throughout the concert, obliging people’s requests and approaching them as close as he possibly could.

“It’s good to be back. You guys made me feel so welcome,” Johnny told the crowd as he thanked them again and again for coming to his show. He is set to release the album on December 8.

  • Ben&Ben explores themes of longing and loneliness in new single “Autumn”

Ben&Ben explores themes of longing and loneliness in new single “Autumn”

The emotional ballad serves as the first offering off the three-part release of Ben&Ben.

Ben&Ben expresses the loneliness that comes in waves after being apart from your loved one for so long.

On their new single, “Autumn,” out today via Sony Music Entertainment, the nine-piece collective copes with the emotional complications that hit home, resulting in a song about “the distance that people often unintentionally create with their other half, because of the changes that life throws at us.”

    Ben&Ben

According to the Paninidigan Kita hitmakers, the introspective track was written in Canada last year, right smack in the middle of their North American tour. The band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, Paolo Benjamin, felt an aching yearning to be with his significant other, as the long-distance proved to be very challenging for both of them.

“A few months later, in early 2023, brother Miguel Benjamin completed the lyrics, also adding a bridge about being in different seasons, which really completed the message of the song,” the folk-pop collective adds. “It speaks about themes of loneliness, yearning, and ultimately, hoping against hope that a new season will come.”

Marking a new chapter for the band, “Autumn” embraces a new direction that reveals subtle details with each listen. Blending rich, acoustic arrangements with lush textures and otherworldly touches, the emotional ballad is meticulously crafted to capture the yearning of being in a long-distance relationship with your other half.

The award-winning band explains in a collective statement, “Autumn is a song where we showcase how we’ve evolved and matured as a band. Writing-wise, we felt the perspective was a more realistic and mature take on the subject. Arrangement and production-wise, we discovered a lot of new ways to express sounds that achieve the emotion we were going for.”

The song is included in a three-part release that Ben&Ben hopes to share in the coming weeks. Aside from “Autumn,” the acclaimed Filipino act will also be dropping the full-band version of their new track “Courage” in the following week and a special collaboration with another artist, due December 8, 2023.

Ben&Ben’s “Autumn” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

  • Coloura drops sophomore EP, Love and Influence

Coloura drops sophomore EP, Love and Influence

The Cebu-based indie quartet delivers a sonically arresting mix of synth-pop anthems, electronic rock jams, ambient soundscapes, and heartfelt tunes.

Cebu-based indie quartet Coloura has finally released their highly anticipated sophomore EP, Love and Influence under Melt Records.

The 5-track release shapes up to be an absolute musical revelation—thanks to its shimmering hooks, undeniably catchy choruses, and infectious arrangements that take you back to the colorful era of ‘80s pop and 2000s electro-pop/rock.

The band explains in a collective statement, “Our music has been heavily inspired by pop, rock, and electronic music, but for this EP, we kind of just went along with whatever was comfortable and fun for us. We are really excited to hear people’s thoughts when they hear this EP.”

The EP, which showcases Coloura’s versatility and boundless creativity, is a testament to the band’s commitment to their craft. Each track tells a unique story and offers a distinct musical experience. With Jake Russell Relacion leading the charge, the band members have poured their hearts and souls into this project.

According to the band, the EP covers themes encompassing the romantic spectrum or dissolution of its stages, however, listeners would want to call it: mutual love, obsession, self-love, and acceptance. Jake penned most of the tracks in the mini-album, except for the hook/chorus of the lead single “Ecstasy,” which Rob (bassist) wrote.

To usher in the new album, they recently released their latest single, “Ecstasy,” which explores the intense and almost trance-like emotions that one experiences when infatuated with someone. Jake Relacion, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, shares his inspiration behind the song: “I was trying to reminisce about the feeling of being overly in love with someone.”

With its infectious melodies and catchy rhythms, “Ecstasy” promises to have you grooving along from the very first note.

    Coloura

Coloura’s music can be described as a delightful mix of pop, rock, and electronic music, with various nuances influenced by each band member’s unique musical background. They released their first song “Losing My Mind” in 2019, echoing nuances from The 1975’s post-punk attitude and the sonically driven sounds of new wave and post-grunge. The release garnered attention in Cebu and beyond, leading to some highlighted music events along with the best bands today, such as Mandaue Nights, Thinking Chair, and many more.

In 2022, the genre-bending act released their debut EP, In Between, featuring the songs “Drive and Meet You,” First Time,” “Let This Go,” and more.

Coloura’s 5-track EP, Love and Influence is out now on all digital/streaming platforms worldwide via Melt Records.

  • SOS comes to terms with love and loss on the emotional anthem “Please Lang”

SOS comes to terms with love and loss on the emotional anthem “Please Lang”

The new track serves as the third offering from their upcoming EP, ‘It Was A Moment,’ due early next year.

Filipino indie rock quintet SOS delves into the impact of lost connections and romantic fallouts on “Please Lang,” their new single under Careless Music.

An emotional anthem that reflects on the weight of unresolved fights and the silent, often unacknowledged trauma it inflicts, “Please Lang” serves as the third offering off their upcoming five-track EP, It Was A Moment—to be released sometime in early 2024.

According to vocalist Roberto Seña, the guitar-driven song delivers confessional songwriting that is evident in most of their music.

“It’s a sad song that focuses on what happened rather than what could have been. It’s also just good fun, really—being able to laugh or have a sense of humor while experiencing inevitable heartbreak. Eventually, the song takes a darker turn as the song settles; things come to an end, and we just have to accept it.”

Over the course of two days, Seña wrote most of the lyrics during one of their jam sessions at Bavarian Records Studio in La Union, while guitarist Andrew Panopio helped with the second half of the song. The song was produced and arranged by the members of the band, resulting in a punchy but subdued release with ‘80s pop and ’90s alt-rock influences worn proudly on its sleeves.

Drummer King Puentespina shares, “I think we were slated to finish arranging another song that day, and during our lunch break, I opened a new project file wanting to jam something out. I remember laying in the chords, progression, and drums and it started morphing. I asked Andrew to go for the groove; Ram was on the keys, and everyone in the room could feel it. It just slowly brought itself together. Seña and Anjo came into the studio after one of their lunch breaks or meetings or something, and they all got excited. I remember stepping out for a meeting and dinner. I came back, and they had all the words down. It was insanely fun.”

“Please Lang” is the second single that features new member Ram Alonzo performing keyboard duties while also being prominently involved in the studio, aiding in the mixing and mastering of the material. He recalls being swept away by the fragility of the track, and how its tale of love and loss deeply resonated with him on a personal level.

“Working on this song felt particularly personal for me,” Ram admits. “While we were writing it, I was going through a similar experience to what the song is all about, which made listening to it kind of difficult. Masakit siya (It’s painful).”

The R&B newcomer celebrates love “in all its beautiful complexities”.

Multi-talented recording star Denise Julia continues to shape the trajectory of Filipino R&B with her debut mini-album, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 1), out this Friday, November 17, 2023, via Sony Music Entertainment.

Nestled between effortless cool and feminine grace, the hitmaker’s 7-track record essays the highs and lows of romantic commitment in the era of perpetual screentime and brief attention spans.
With a sweet voice that flutters gently above sonic flourishes, Denise Julia speaks her mind with wisdom beyond her years, delivering the material as if it were part of her joy, pain, and experience.

“This album isn’t just a bunch of songs; it’s like a journey through all the different parts of love—from the exciting beginnings to the tough endings, and finally, to those sweet, lingering moments,” the NVMD artist reveals in a statement. “Sweet Nothings is like looking back at my own experiences and the stories of others that touched me. It’s like a musical trip exploring the different sides of love.”

Combining R&B sensibilities with a modern touch of jazzy soundscapes, hip-hop beats, and suave instrumentation, Denise Julia takes reign of her narrative as she deals with different facets of love: the rough parts, the reassuringly sweet edges, and the meaty center, all of which make the experience worth rummaging for. As the young music icon explains it, “Each song talks about a different part of this feeling we all know.”

Denise Julia’s new album features production from her constant and trusted collaborators, including Joel Tracks, a prolific producer based in Nigeria; J.Greg and Duaneinsane, who played pivotal roles in bringing her vision to life; and Neo Cruz, who is responsible for making “Butterflies” a sultry number with signature smooth melodies.

Norwegian-Filipina artist and multi-instrumentalist HILLARI and acclaimed alt-R&B experimentalist Jason Dhakal also join Denise Julia on “Roster” and “Bum 2 Me,” respectively, adding an interesting dimension to the album’s delicately sparse but genuinely sophisticated sound.

There’s also the inescapable crossover hit “B.A.D.,” featuring acclaimed rapper P-Lo, whose style and flow complement Julia’s incredible vocal chops. To date, the catchy R&B jam has racked up more than 2 million streams on Spotify since its release, peaking at No. 66 and still going strong.

“Working alongside these musical geniuses was a transformative experience, offering me invaluable insights and learnings,” the R&B sensation shares. ‘Their expertise and creativity elevated the project to new heights, and I am truly grateful for the collaborative synergy that shaped the outcome.”

The album’s focus track, “Lackin’,” serves as another highlight: an airy lullaby that was inspired by one of her dreams. Denise Julia told her producers about how the dream felt like a “ghost in her mind” and that she had to immediately write the track over that ringing, familiar melody.

She adds, “I remember the pressure and excitement during the studio session, especially in the intro. This track stands out as one of my best-written pieces, capturing the raw emotion of a relationship where one person was lacking, yet I expressed the belief that the tables would turn and they’d crave my presence in return.”
