Linkin Park Hits Restart with From Zero

    Linkin Park From Zero

The global music scene just got its much-needed boost as Linkin Park released their new album From Zero on November 15. The 11-track album, which includes the #1 singles “The Emptiness Machine” and “Heavy is the Crown”, goes down to the roots of Linkin Park’s nu-metal origins fused with a rejuvenated take on electronic rock and progressive pop-esque threads, making it one of the most compelling rock albums released in recent time.

To say that it is one of the most anticipated albums in 2024 is an understatement. LP is, after all, one of the biggest and most influential rock bands of the 21st century. Chester Bennington’s untimely passing in 2017 left a huge void in the music industry and a bigger one in the band’s future. After a lot of push and pull, it took 7 years for the band to reconstruct its pieces, and decide to release new music. Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, Joe Hahn with the addition of Emily Armstrong on vocals and Colin Brittain on drums have now rebuilt Linkin Park with From Zero, and we are grateful for it.

Listening to From Zero for the first time felt like traversing different LP timelines while staying grounded in the present. There was a moment when “Two Faced” felt like a massive shoutback to Hybrid Theory with the pointed guitar riffs and unrelenting turntable scratches. “Cut the Bridge” harkens back to “Bleed It Out” with the rhythmic rap, propelled by sharp drum beats that lead to an anthemic chorus. The League of Legends Worlds 2024 soundtrack “Heavy is the Crown” was reminiscent of Meteora’s “Faint”, mashed with Minute to Midnight’s “Given Up”. Of course, the comeback track “The Emptiness Machine” felt like a walk between The Hunting Party and Living Things, an easy ear-friendly track for old and new fans alike. From Zero pulled from the intricate working of the old LP sound, with its edges refined and melodies fine-tuned to a more sophisticated body of music.

While a lot of people were skeptical of Emily’s vocal prowess, this album proved that she can stand her own ground proudly. Her vocals carried through the emotionally-charged crooning for “Over Each Other” and “Good Things Go” while also harnessing the rage-filled screaming for “Casualty” and “IGYEIH” (short for “I Gave You Everything I Have”). An interesting upgrade to LP’s repertoire is “Overflow” which builds an atmospherically haunting sound with the reverberating synth and the echoes of the vocals.

With From Zero, we can definitely say that Linkin Park is back! While nothing can ever replace Chester Bennington, the band has successfully managed to carve a new beginning for themselves by integrating the core of LP’s music and reconstructing it to fit the present. More exciting things ahead as Linkin Park is all set to embark on the 2nd leg of their From Zero World Tour in 2025 which includes more than 50 shows all over the globe. Hopefully, a Philippine stop will be included in the future as well!

Special thanks to Warner Music Philippines for inviting us to the Exclusive Listening Party for Linkin Park’s Brand New Album ‘From Zero’ held at 12 Monkeys Music Hall with live performances by Chicosci and Typecast.

Warner Music Philippines Unveils Remarkable Compilation Album in Celebration of 30th Year in the Industry

Let’s celebrate three decades of Warner Music PH with these wonderfully reimagined hits!

Warner Music Philippines, one of the country’s biggest record labels is celebrating their 30th year in the industry with an extravagant compilation, featuring a star-studded lineup of their own signed and managed talented artists, showcasing the diverse and vibrant music scene of today.

Before this project came to life and earlier this year, the label kicked off ‘We Play Here’, which is a series of live performances and events to bring fans as well as local and international artists even closer together. Its success was evident because the kick-off ‘We Play Here’ event held at Samsung Hall at SM Aura last April 27 headlined by Felip, Dilaw, Lola Amour, Leanne & Naara and more was joined and well-loved by lots of OPM fans.

Now in their 30th year, Warner Music PH’s dedication to supporting local talent has been stronger than ever. The renowned record label has curated an extraordinary musical experience by reviving some of the strongest hits on their catalog and making it a monumental compilation album, aptly titled ‘Warner 30th

To celebrate the release of these reimagined popular songs from the past decades, an upcoming milestone event is happening this December to guarantee to bring a one-of-a-kind, high-energy live music experience that’s truly unforgettable for everyone.

The ‘Warner 30th’ Compilation launch is to take place on December 8, 2023 at Balcony Music House in Makati. Audiences can look forward to electrifying performances by the label’s commendable artist roster: Lola AmourDilawJason DhakalRangel, and Jireh Lim.

Below is the list of the most sought-after artists signed under Warner Music Philippines who joined the powerful compilation album:

Arthur Miguel, has been part of the Top 10 Spotify daily charts this year with his smash hit “LIhim”. His soothing vocals earned a surge of streams and  numerous Spotify playlists such as Hot Hits Philippines, Tatak Pinoy, Viral Hits Philippines, and many more. For this compilation album, he made a rendition of “Your Universe” by Rico Blanco.

A rising singer-songwriter, Noah Alejandre’s music speaks of the struggles and experiences of youngsters. His music is heartfelt, honest, and raw, evident in his singles “Nahuhulog Na Sa’yo”, “Entablado”, and “Di Man Tinadhana”. For the record label’s anniversary, he mesmerized everyone with his own version of Rico Blanco’s “Antukin”

Also, part of this big event are Cliff and Reanne Borella for their own refreshing rendition of Nina’s hit song “Jealous”.  Cliff is the most streamed artist in Eastern Visayas and a highly sought-after artist from Ormoc City, Leyte. He peaked at 950,000+ Monthly Listeners on Spotify for “Sunsets With You” which placed in several Spotify editorials and became hit trend in Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia and with over 31 million streams to date. Reanne, also a singer-songwriter from Leyte, gained recognition after winning Philpop 2020 with their bilingual single “Suyo” as one half of the indie pop duo, reon. Now she’s pursuing her career as a solo artist under Warner Music Philippines.

A true artist and performer since childhood, Rangel joined local talent competitions, learned to play the guitar and uploaded her first original song to Soundcloud in 2016. Her popularity rose further after being part of noontime show Eat Bulaga. She was part of Music Hero, a now disbanded pop-rock group that popularized a song she wrote — “KLWKN”. Since going solo and joining Warner Music Philippines, she has released “Hanggang Saan”, “DIKA”, “Babalik”, plus her own version of Kitchie Nadal’s hit, “Same Ground”.

Born into a family closely tied to music, jikamarie first made headlines for her track “lutang” which reached #22 on the Spotify Daily Chart. More releases followed with “Kailangan ko ng…” “KISLAP”, “the sun is you”, “HALIMAW”, and even collaborated with JRLDM and Jireh Lim. She brings good vibes with her own take on “Bulong” by Kitchie Nadal. To date, she is gearing up for her first debut album.

The talented contemporary queer R&B singer-songwriter Jason Dhakal is also part of the mix. His spectacular and refreshing revival of Sitti’s “Para Sa Akin” has taken the track to the top 50 on Spotify’s Daily Chart. Jason  marked his breakthrough with his critically-acclaimed debut EP ‘Night In’ in 2018 which saw collaboration tracks with Jess Connelly and dot.jaime. In 2020 he released ‘lovesound’ co-produced by celebrated local composer LUSTBASS. Jason also did a collaboration with Arthur Nery on “Happy w u” and was part of various local festivals Fête de la Musique, All Of The Noise, and Double Happiness by 88rising.

JRLDM who dropped notable singles “Patiwakal”, followed by “PARASITIKO” just teamed up with Party PaceASTRO, and Slimm in his refreshing R&B-Hip-hop version of “Laklak” popularized by rock band Teeth. His artist name is a stylized iteration of “Jerald-Damn”.

P-Pop Group 1st.One is also part of the celebration, crafting a poppy and danceable version of the hit song “Your Love” by Alamid.

“Chinelas”, one of Kamikazee’s earlier hits, was also given a total makeover from one of the most sought-after bands this year, Baguio’s pride Dilaw. The band teamed up with AsianCutie to create the track. The band went viral this year for their breakout song, “Uhaw (Tayong Lahat) with now over 124 million Spotify streams and millions of engagements on TikTok. The track won Best Alternative Recording, Best Performance by a Group Recording Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year at the 36th Awit Awards in November 2023.

Born and raised in Davao, Paul Pablo rose to popularity with songs like “Bangin”, “Kalawakan” and “Kaya”. He did a remarkable spin on Rico Blanco’s 2008 comeback single “Yugto.” His fresh take on OPM and the impressive LGBTQ representation is proves to be changing the game in the Philippines Music Industry.

FELIP surprised everyone with an acoustic guitar-driven version of “Moving Closer” which was originally performed by Never The Strangers off their 2012 self-titled album. The P-Pop soloist dropped his debut EP COM•PLEX this year and it was loaded with hip-hop, R&B, and trap music. His single “ROCKSTA” now has almost 3 million streams on Spotify.

Up-and-coming artist Nicole Anjela collaborated with Josh Dutch and did a soothing version of “So Blue” originally performed by Sinosikat?

Rising six-piece folk-pop band Sugarcane is also part of the compilation record, doing a captivating revival of “Set You Free,” one of the most popular songs from Side A. The band, who has over 2.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify has eight original songs in the millions of streams on the said platform. Their most popular song “Leonora” now has over 40.6 million streams. Their song “Paruparo” has been nominated for Song of the Year, Best Alternative Recording, and Best Collaboration in Awit Awards 2023.

Lastly, “Raining in Manila” hitmaker Lola Amour is part of the mix. The band, now with over 4.7 million Spotify monthly listeners is 2023’s breakthrough artist. For the record label’s 30th year anniversary, they did a refreshing take on Kitchie Nadal’s “Huwag Na Huwag Mong Sasabihin” which exploded during the early 2000s.

Fans can expect a blend of nostalgia and fresh vibes as Warner Music Philippines revisits iconic tracks from its illustrious catalog while introducing new and exciting sounds that continue to define the label’s future. Avail limited tickets for the ‘Warner 30th’ Compilation launch via warner30th.helixpay.ph.

  • FELIP, DILAW, LOLA AMOUR, AND MORE TO KICKOFF WARNER MUSIC PHILIPPINES’ ‘WE PLAY HERE’

FELIP, DILAW, LOLA AMOUR, AND MORE TO KICKOFF WARNER MUSIC PHILIPPINES’ ‘WE PLAY HERE’

The April 27 event jumpstarts the 30th anniversary celebration of the global music label’s presence in the Philippines.

It’s a celebration of star-studded proportions with the launch of Warner Music Philippines’ We Play Here!

As part of the label’s core mission to be at the forefront of championing Filipino music, Warner Music Philippines is celebrating its 30th anniversary in the country with a series of live performances and events to bring fans as well as local and international artists even closer together. To jumpstart the celebrations, six of the country’s most beloved musical acts are coming together for a one-of-a-kind, high-energy event.

SB19’s Ken—performing under his mononym FELIP—leads the lineup after his stellar solo debut earlier this year. After just three months since the release of his debut EP, COM·PLEX has over 3 million total streams on Spotify, with three of his singles charting on the platform’s Viral 50 Philippines playlist. He also received rave reviews for his dark and edgy brand of hip hop, with publications such as HipHopDX Asia saying that, “FELIP allows himself to go to the farthest, most experimental, and even most unthinkable places and tap into his own instincts to make music and art with the utmost freedom.”

The rising Davao-based hip hop group PLAYERTWO are expected to bring their a-game to the Samsung Hall stage. Composed of vocalists-producers Ivo Impreso, Luke April, Wave P, and visual directors Puhken and Ven Villariza, they soared to the top of the Spotify charts, with their breakout single “THAT’S MY BABY” garnering over 9 million streams. Their latest release, “TIKTIKTOKIN” has become a fan favorite as the quintet make their way all over the Philippines on their THAT’S MY BABY tour.

Rounding out the hip hop artists on the lineup is R&B singer and rapper JRLDM. A multi-awarded and internationally recognized performer, he is best known for his emotional and heartfelt flows that resonate with audiences. He, alongside labelmate Arkho of Midnasty, joined the inaugural edition of The Regionals: Philippines, the Philippine leg of the first ever Pan-Asia rap cypher series.

Rising pop band Dilaw will also be performing during the event. The band went viral on social media for their breakout song, “Uhaw (Tayong Lahat),” with over 22 million Spotify streams and over 1 million videos on TikTok. Just recently, the track clinched the top spot of Spotify’s Top Songs Philippines chart. They’re ready to bring their brand of unconventional lyricism and catchy tunes to the Samsung Hall stage.

Beloved pop rock band Lola Amour is one of the biggest acts in the music industry—playing in some of the biggest malls, schools, and festivals in the country. Their status as a fan favorite in the country definitely shows, especially with multiple Awit Award nominations to their name. As one of the most exciting bands in the scene today, they’ve played in venues all over the country, from malls, and even music festivals. Get ready to sing along to some of their biggest hits like “Fallen,” “Pwede Ba,” or “Madali.”

Last but definitely not the least are the soul and R&B duo Leanne & Naara, who are set to complete the event’s star-studded lineup. The pair is considered as one of the most decorated contemporary acts today, especially after they dominated the Awit Awards and snagged the highly-coveted Song of the Year and Album of the Year awards. Their silky smooth vocals are sure to sweep audiences off their feet.

“Our We Play Here series showcases and celebrates everything that is so exciting about where this generation of Filipino artists is at right now,” shares Sarah Ismail, Managing Director of Warner Music Philippines. “The acts are bigger, better, and more diverse than ever before, and our whole team is so proud of the role that Warner Music Philippines is playing in the global rise of OPM.

Fans and music lovers alike can expect more events that showcase the pride of Filipino music in the coming months. Stay tuned!

We Play Here kicks off this April 27, 6 PM, Thursday at the SM Aura Samsung Hall. • Paramore drops new single and video, new album out next year

Paramore drops new single and video, new album out next year

Paramore are back with their first new music since 2017. The beloved Nashville-based trio of Zac Farro, Hayley Williams & Taylor York have returned from their hiatus – and the global pandemic – with “This Is Why”, one of the best songs of their already impressive repertoire. In what’s widely recognized as one of the most exciting musical returns of the year, the band have also announced the release of their long awaited sixth studio album, This is Why,for February 10th 2023 on Atlantic Records. Recorded in Los Angeles, California with long-time collaborator Carlos de la Garza, the album features 10 new Paramore songs with cover art shot by Zachary Gray.

Entering back into a world – and cultural landscape – very different from the one they last participated in, Paramore have returned with a song about exactly that. “This Is Why” is a deliciously infectious Paramore ear-worm for the post-truth world. Of the song, Williams says, “This Is Why was the very last song we wrote for the album. To be honest, I was so tired of writing lyrics but Taylor convinced Zac and I both that we should work on this last idea. What came out of it was the title track for the whole album. It summarizes the plethora of ridiculous emotions, the rollercoaster of being alive in 2022, having survived even just the last 3 or 4 years. You’d think after a global pandemic of fucking biblical proportions and the impending doom of a dying planet, that humans would have found it deep within themselves to be kinder or more empathetic or something.”

The video was directed by Turnstile’s Brendan Yates and filmed in Malibu, California last month. Speaking on the video and collaboration, Williams says, “It was so rad working with Brendan. I’ve known the Turnstile guys for a little while and was so psyched to have our worlds collide in this way. There’s a cool kinship between the way our bands do things… Hopefully we will get to play shows with them at some point,”

When Paramore revealed they were recording together in January 2022 the response from music fans around the world was immediate and celebratory. In the time since the Grammy-winning, RIAA-certified multi-Platinum band released their last album, After Laughter  – and Hayley Williams unveiled two lauded solo albums – Paramore have become more popular than ever.  Over the last few years Paramore’s influence and popularity has snowballed, as the age of streaming organically propelled them into a position as one of the world’s biggest, most culturally compelling rock bands. For the band, who formed as teenagers in Tennessee, their 20 year trajectory has seen them grow from youthful outsiders to bone-fide pop culture icons, permeating the musical landscape by inspiring a new generation of musical talent.

Renowned for their arena-filling and festival-headlining performance prowess, the opportunity to see Paramore play their first theater shows in years created headline news. • Get To Know JC Stewart

    Get To Know JC Stewart

A self-confessed Professional Sadboy, JC Stewart has had a summer to smile about. His recent single ‘Have You Had Enough Wine?’ earned Radio 1 play from Arielle Free and Scott Mills, as well as praise from Niall Horan. And his live profile is exploding too, following shows with Lauv and James Bay – not to mention the fact that all four shows in his upcoming residency at The Islington sold-out within a matter of hours.

Now the young Northern Irish artist continues his positive momentum by sharing an acoustic session performance of his new single ‘Bones’. Filmed by Jackson Ducasse on the outskirts of London in a naturalistic, observational style, the session perfectly captures the traits that make him one to watch for the future. JC’s voice combines a soaring soulful power with an emotional resonance that brings the song’s lovelorn lyrics to life. “‘Bones’ is one of the most honest songs I have ever written,” says JC Stewart. “I wrote it the day after my first ever break-up and all the lyrics just spilled onto the page really quickly. I’m super excited that it’s coming out after so long!”

Today also sees JC sharing the studio version of ‘Bones’. In contrast to the raw intimacy of the session performance, this take on ‘Bones’ focuses on the song’s towering, anthemic nature. Its dramatic beats, strident synths and vocodered vocals take it in a modernist, alt-pop direction. JC Stewart co-wrote ‘Bones’ with Sam Merrifield (Lewis Capaldi, JP Cooper) and Dirty Hit artist Benjamin Francis Leftwich. The studio version of the track was produced by Nathaniel ‘Detonate’ Ledwidge and is released on his music and merch sub-brand Sunshine Boy. JC Stewart grew up in County Derry, Northern Ireland. The fourth generation of JC Stewarts in the family tree – the rest being grocers – the young musician was always destined to take a route less travelled. Citing diverse influences such as James Blake, Dermot Kennedy, Hozier, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and The Band, he crafts songs born from his own experiences of love and heartbreak that explode from intimate confessionals into bold anthems.

That skill has been heightened by collaborations with some of the world’s leading producers and songwriters including the Grammy-winning Fred Ball (The Carters), Justin Parker (Lana Del Rey), Greg Wells (Dua Lipa, Adele), Toby Gad (Jess Glynne, John Legend), Jon Green (Rag N Bone Man, James Bay) and Jonny Coffer (Beyoncé, Fall Out Boy) In addition to his own quickly ascending career, JC Stewart is also an in-demand collaborator for the next wave of young artists. He co-wrote ‘Hollywood’ with his friend Lewis Capaldi, with the song featuring on the latter’s smash hit debut album ‘Devilishly Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’. He then followed his set at Barn On The Farm by guesting during Maggie Rogers’ performance of ‘Alaska’ alongside Maisie Peters and others.

Bloc Party Live in Manila: A Rocking Miracle

    bloc-party-live-in-manila

We were hoping for a miracle, or something very close to it. Bloc Party made one happen in Manila.

Eight years after the release of their iconic debut album, Silent Alarm, Bloc Party finally made their first stop in Manila to give their Filipino fans a rocking musical experience that would be difficult to top. Before the Southeast Asia leg of their tour, Japan was the only Asian country the band had frequented over the years. Thank the heavens and all the goodness in the universe for their decision to put Manila in their itinerary for their world tour this year, because for the thousands of their hardcore fans who were in that hall, the experience really was one hell of a miracle.

For an hour and a half, the Hall D of World Trade Center echoed out the united roars and shrieks of the thousands of hardcore fans and music enthusiasts. Bloc Party’s Matt Tong Speaks

    bloc-party-live-in-manila

    “Raw. Aggressive. Heartfelt. Uninhibited.”

When asked to describe “Four” in four words, Matt Tong, drummer of Bloc Party, blurted out, with a bit of snigger and momentary hesitation. “Four”, the band’s latest album, is a surprise to the world of music. When the band decided to go on a hiatus in 2009, the fans weren’t sure they were getting back together. The truth was the four members of the band weren’t even sure either. Two years after, Bloc Party came back to the studio with grittier riffs and hard-hitting beats. Indeed, it is just as Matt said: “Four” is raw, aggressive, heartfelt and uninhibited.
Matt Tong, who was in Dublin, Ireland with the band for their show in Olympia Theatre, graced the Filipino media with a phone interview on February 13. It was about 12 noon there (8pm in Manila) when we got to talk to him. Apparently, he was having his breakfast. In good spirits, he took us, bit by bit, through “Four”, the band’s future and some of his personal quirks. Read on for the interesting conversation that transpired that evening.

Hiatus after “Intimacy” – how has this break contributed into building “Four”?
“…The break was instrumental in its ensuring we can get back and be decent human beings to one another. I think we grew up during that time. Having a couple of years away from the band made us realize that we valued being in the band and we valued playing music for each other as well.”
