Rock band Sandwich Goes Kaswal, new EP is out under PolyEast Records

Sandwich, the beloved alternative rock band known for their distinctive sound and energetic performances, is excited to announce the release of their brand new EP titled “Kaswal.” This marks the first EP since its critically acclaimed release, “No Goodbyes,” in 2022. The upcoming EP, Kaswal, seems to have that added atmosphere of filtering it through a conscious lens of accessibility. While No Goodbyes captured a raw and unfiltered burst of creative energy, Kaswal reflects a more refined and conscious approach to songwriting, emphasizing accessibility while maintaining its signature style.

The EP was officially launched on March 26 at Apotheka Manila in Makati, featuring unforgettable performances from the band along with SUYEN, Ozo, Gloryen, and The Diegos. Additionally, PolyEast Records has renewed its contract with one of Pinoy rock’s enduring bands this year, solidifying a partnership that has withstood the test of time.

Track #1 is “Nyare?” released in April 2023. The song was borne out of guitarist Diego Castillo’s broken guitar riff he absent-mindedly recorded on an iPhone. The song has that crunchy electric guitar goodness that Sandwich that we have come to love from them since time immemorial, but with a little groovy funk thrown it. You can practically mosh and groove to it at the same time. The song is about experiencing a somewhat personal traumatic experience and keeping yourself from blowing it out of proportion.

“Ibang Araw Na Lang” is a song that reflects on how we should not let the downs we experience ruin the rest of our lives which are filled with ups, friends, and happy experiences. A track that once again came from a bunch of broken demos that drummer Mike Dizon took from Castillo when he asked for instrumental stuff he could use as a musical bed for his YouTube videos. Dizon, who has written lyrics for hit rock songs such as “Laklak”, for starters, started writing over it with the rest of the band (Myrene Academia on bass, Mong Alcaraz on guitar) adding their musical influence flourishes into the mix.

The third track is the critically acclaimed “Morena”, which frontman Raimund Marasigan always describes as their love song for the Filipino people and the Filipina color, “Ang pinakamagandang kulay sa balat ng lupa…” To paraphrase Castillo in a social media post he made in recent memory, while the song mainly has that harana, traditional folk song and rondalla elements at the forefront, modern elements and influences from James Brown, to the fuzz guitar of Os Mutantes and the tropicalia movement of Brazil to the spaghetti Western motif of Ennio Morricone while still channeling Maestros Abelardo, Santiago, and Molina. It is also an ode to our past, our present, and most importantly, our future.

Their most recent release, “Wag Ka Na Lang Kumagat” turns the inherent funk of this album even further with its dark turn and confrontational lyrics.

Key single “Tag-ulan na naman” has that slick, funky 70’s disco vibe. The song is about waking up on a rainy morning and wishing you didn’t have to get up and face the dread of a mundane daily life. The final cut, “Tag-araw” has that sinister clubby vibe to it that also tackles the dreariness of daily life, but from the perspective of a hot day.

The band has captured the counterculture sensitivities of alt-rock with cult favorites such as “Butterfly Carnival”, “Two-Trick Pony”, “Sugod”, “DVDx”, “Sunburn”, “Procrastinator”, “Betamax”, and “Selos”, among many others has struck again with Kaswal.

  • Indie rock artist SUYEN to relase much-awaited debut EP “Suyen Imnida”

Indie rock artist SUYEN to relase much-awaited debut EP “Suyen Imnida”

Following the success of her hit singles “Bente,” “Tampo,” and “Teka Lang! (looper machine),” rising indie rock star SUYEN is thrilled to announce the release of her debut EP, “Suyen Imnida,” under PolyEast Records through its sub-label, filtered music.

This highly anticipated six-track EP delves into themes of teenage punk and young love. The title track, “Suyen Imnida,” serves as an exciting introduction to SUYEN as an artist and is inspired by her real personality. “Suyen Imnida is a song about me– introduction siya kung sa galing yung name ko, taga san ako, ano yung mga gusto ko at mga struggles ko sa buhay. Ito usually ang first song ko sa gigs because it actually represents who I am.”

Fans can look forward to an eclectic mix of sounds showcasing her musical journey’s passion and energy. Other songs on the EP are “Isang Linggong Maghihintay”, “Something ‘bout u”, and “Suyen Imnida”. According to Suyen, the EP would not be possible without the help of Zild Benitez of the rock band IV of Spades as album producer and One Click Straight’s Sam Marquez as sound engineer.

Suyen has been performing gigs here and there as an emerging artist and has gained an impressive following on social media. She draws significant inspiration from local artists she admires. She shared, “I have always been a fan of (rock band) Sandwich, so I’m looking forward to working with them. Additionally, we are part of the same label. Their music has greatly inspired me throughout my journey of growing and honing my talent as a musician.”

“This EP has brought me a new perspective towards my music. The moment na andito na ako, mas na feel ko na seryoso na siya at di na lang siya hobby so may pressure talaga. But at the same time, since i’m only starting, ine-enjooy ko lang lahat ng moment,” she also added.

To celebrate the release, PolyEast Records hosted SUYEN’s EP launch on February 21 at Kowloon House in Quezon City. The event was also graced with performances by another PolyEast Records artist ila, Ena Mori, and Aunt Robert, concluding a night of unforgettable music and vibrant performances of young songwriters in the music scene.

Five years since his emergence in the music industry, acoustic balladeer TJ Monterde is set to perform in his first-ever concert titled “Ikaw at Ako”. Brought to you by PolyEast Records, join TJ in a one-night-only show on June 17 at the Music Museum.

Despite the constantly changing demand of listeners today, TJ has been consistent in producing his own songs instead of covers with singles like “Ikaw at Ako”, “Imahinasyon”, “Dating Tayo” and “Tulad Mo”. Releasing original hits one after another, TJ has definitely made a name for himself in today’s music scene.

TJ is thrilled to be performing side by side with a full band and working closely with musical director Jem Florendo. “What you hear on gigs, what you hear on the CDs or online, it’s going to be different. What you’re going to hear on the concert – everything is going to be different.” he shares.

“Ikaw at Ako,” TJ’s debut single that became a hit in 2013 quickly grew to become his signature song. He saw it fit for the title of his concert since this concert is really for his fans – “Ikaw” referring to his fans and “Ako” referring to TJ himself.

“June 5th is actually my fourth anniversary with TJFs. We started out back in 2012 and it was a small meet-up with 12 people. Eventually it grew to become what it is now so ito narin ‘yung celebration namin. It’s going to be TJ and my music listeners.” TJ opens about his fan base, TJFs.

Along with the concert, TJ will be launching his third and latest album, “Mahika” which he also included in the fifteen-song setlist. “This is my way of giving back to my supporters since day one… they were the ones who know my songs by heart so I’m excited to sing for them.” he adds.

The singer-songwiter has revealed that he chose all of the songs for the concert. While he will perform a few covers, he shares that 90% of the songs are his originals, “May Filipino, may 90s, may current hits, they’re my personal favorites – songs I grew up listening to. It’s going to be a peek at my playlist.”

When asked about what he felt about having his concert so early in his career, TJ has this to say: “I feel so blessed. Not everybody’s given the chance to be able to express themselves through music. I never imagined na magkakaconcert ako this soon. Sobrang overwhelming.”

PolyEast Records artist and young popstar Sassa Dagdag is revealed to have an appearance in the concert.
Back in 2011, TJ quickly gained attention from fans all over the country through his YouTube channel. With only his guitar in hand and his dreams at heart, TJ set off from his hometown Cagayan de Oro for Manila.

TJ released his second album titled “Imahinasyon” which was notably acclaimed in both radio and online platform. Now that he’s set to release his third album and solo concert, TJ humbly has this to say, “Through the experience, na-realize ko na the more you grow in this business, the more that you become open to growth.”

“Ikaw at Ako” concert is presented by Yamaha Motor Philippines in cooperation with UniSilverTime, AttiGo, Royqueen, Steeltech, and JCA Ventures. Special thanks to Montesa Medical Group by Shimmian Manila and Rice Top Asian Comfort Food.
