  • Les Misérables in Manila: A Mirror of Filipino Resilience and Revolution!

Les Misérables in Manila: A Mirror of Filipino Resilience and Revolution!

At its core, the musical’s themes, poverty, social injustice, oppression, survival through hardship, redemption, and especially “righteous revolution” strike a chord in a country with a long history of fighting inequality and standing against tyranny. We Filipinos see ourselves in the barricade alongside the students of “Do You Hear the People Sing?” as they rise against injustice, reflecting our collective struggles for dignity and change amid ongoing economic challenges and systemic issues.

This show builds on the Les Misérables: The Staged Concert model by adding new set design and lighting to make it a great theater experience. Lea Salonga plays Madame Thénardier, Rachelle Ann Go plays Fantine, Red Concepcion plays Thénardier, and Emily Bautista, who is making her Manila debut as Eponine. Their involvement adds a meaningful local touch, bringing together stars from around the world with stars from the area. Filipino audiences now connect with several strong, interconnected reasons that make it feel less like foreign theater and more like a mirror to real life.

The story’s portrayal of desperation, stealing bread for survival, mothers sacrificing everything, the marginalized scraping by, feels achingly familiar in a society where resilience and communal support are cultural strengths. It’s not escapism; it’s recognition. The production employs over 100 staff members and promises a polished performance that spans approximately three hours, presenting the enduring themes of redemption, revolution, and resilience found in Victor Hugo’s narrative. The sound design is impressive and the balance between the live orchestra and vocal performances is perfect, which makes the whole thing more emotional. The live orchestra, which included Filipino and international musicians, was praised for providing a powerful audio experience. The technical aspects of the Solaire stage made the show feel more personal and emotional. The audience was full of excitement on gala night, with lots of applause and cheers. This Manila engagement is more than just a tour stop; it’s a celebration of Filipino talent set against a backdrop of great theater.

The current 2026 Manila run amplifies this connection through strong Filipino representation, creating a profound “homecoming” vibe. We have loved Les Mis for decades amid ongoing societal reflections, it remains a timeless, cathartic reminder of why people fight, and why and how we sing through the struggle. It just fits so perfectly: it’s not just watched; it’s felt, claimed, and lived.

Les Misérables: The World Tour Spectacular, celebrating the musical’s 40th anniversary, is currently being showcased at The Theatre at Solaire in Manila from January 20 to March 1, 2026.

  • Olivier Award-Winning Jesus Christ Superstar to Rock Manila in May 2026

Olivier Award-Winning Jesus Christ Superstar to Rock Manila in May 2026

Manila, Philippines – Following triumphant, sold-out seasons in London and an extensive tour across North America, the UK, and Australia, the reimagined, Olivier Award-winning production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar is set to make its highly anticipated Manila debut at The Theatre at Solaire from May 2 to 24, 2026.

    Jesus Christ Superstar Manila

Originally conceived at London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, this electrifying revival—directed by Timothy Sheader and choreographed by Drew McOnie—breathes raw, contemporary energy into the timeless 1970s rock opera. The creative team includes design by Tom Scutt, lighting by Lee Curran, sound by Nick Lidster, and music supervision by Tom Deering.

Told entirely through song, Jesus Christ Superstar re-examines the final week of Jesus Christ’s life through the conflicted perspective of Judas Iscariot. The score—penned by Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar, and Tony winners Rice and Lloyd Webber—features enduring anthems like “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane,” blending rock, gospel, and orchestral grandeur.

Since its 1971 Broadway premiere at the Mark Hellinger Theatre and 1972 West End opening at the Palace Theatre (where it ran for a then-record 3,358 performances), the musical has captivated global audiences. Notable milestones include a 2012 Broadway revival, an ITV casting competition Superstar that launched Ben Forster in an arena tour, and the Regent’s Park production that marked the show’s 45th anniversary.

This Manila engagement is produced by GMG Productions and David Ian for Crossroads Live and Work Light Productions, with the original staging by Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

“After incredible success in Australia and the UK, we’re delighted to be bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to Manila. This Olivier Award-winning production has amazed audiences around the world with its raw energy and breathtaking performances. Whether you’ve loved the show for decades or are discovering it for the first time, this will be an unforgettable experience.”

  • Dear Evan Hansen Resonates with Manila’s Young Audience

Dear Evan Hansen Resonates with Manila’s Young Audience

On September 5, GMG Productions rolled out the blue carpet for the gala night of Dear Evan Hansen at The Theatre at Solaire, marking the Manila debut of the UK touring cast. Ellis Kirk stepped into the titular role, with Sonny Monaghan as alternate.

The decision to bring the show to Manila was straightforward — the people wanted it. GMG Executive Producer Sam Sewell shared that their programming is shaped by audience surveys. With the chatter at the lobby before the show began, the city’s excitement was undeniable.

Dear Evan Hansen has become a touchstone of the musical theatre genre since its premiere in 2016, winning four Tony Awards, an Olivier, and a Grammy. But prestige alone doesn’t explain its endurance. Its narrative—a teenager spinning a lie into online virality—should read as bleak, yet the production offsets the gravity with humor. That balance leaned hard on Tom Dickerson’s Jared Kleinman, who kept the show buoyant as comic relief and chaos engine. “My happiness is based on whether the audience laughs,” he said at a press conference. By that measure, Manila delivered.

What makes the show resonate isn’t just the score or the accolades, but the mirror it holds up to its audience. Its portrayal of the weight of existence, the desire to disappear, and the fumbling attempts at connection in the age of social media are lived experiences for many.

Part of that connection is demographic. Sewell noted that Filipino theatergoers skew 10 to 12 years younger than their Western counterparts. With a youthful cast and storyline, the closeness in age makes the themes hit harder.

Rebecca McKinnis’ turn as Heidi Hansen drew some of the night’s loudest applause, while Kirk, as Evan, landed a standing ovation. His take on Evan embraced awkwardness without slipping into caricature, his vocals inevitably inviting comparisons to Ben Platt, the original Broadway Evan. Whether that proves a blessing or a burden is for the audience to decide.

Dear Evan Hansen runs until October 5 at The Theatre at Solaire, with tickets available
    via Ticketworld.com.ph.

Despite the admitted pressure, the cast received high praise from the press, with SPOT.ph describing them as “nothing short of stellar,” and Tatler Philippines stating, “[W]hat sets it apart is the cast’s bravery in portraying the characters’ plight with high emotion and sustained levels of tension and control.” The Daily Tribuneparticularly praised Adriano and Seann Miley Moore, noting, “Her rendition of ‘I’d Give My Life for You,’ as she cradles her son Tam in her arms, is so heartfelt and heart-wrenching that it feels like hearing it for the first time,” and Miley Moore, who“creates this shrewd, funny, and at times sympathetic character with his impressive vocal quality and range, in tandem with his seemingly boundless energy on stage.”

The heat is on in Manila as GMG Productions, in association with GWB Entertainment, has announced that Cameron Mackintosh’s globally acclaimed production of Boublil & Schönberg’s “Miss Saigon” is heading to The Theatre at Solaire this March 2024.

The internationally acclaimed new production of “Miss Saigon” opened in London in May 2014 to record-breaking advance sales and critical acclaim, winning an unprecedented 9 Whatsonstage Awards. It then opened on Broadway and a hugely successful US Tour followed with The New Yorker calling it “A Dynamite Broadway revival”. UK’s The Daily Telegraph wrote, “This thrilling new production spills out beyond theatre and speaks directly to the times we live in – magnificent performances.” The Daily Mail said, “The greatest musical of all time just got even better!”. It has just completed a hugely successful run at Sydney Opera House and, following limited seasons in Melbourne and Adelaide, the show will land in Manila, a city that has a deep connection with this musical, in March 2024.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh has shared his enthusiasm for bringing the title to the Philippines.  I’m absolutely thrilled to be bringing my spectacular new production of Miss Saigon to Manila. Without a doubt, it is the best production of Saigon I have ever produced, with one of the most brilliant casts that have ever performed the show around the world. I can’t envisage another show of this scale being done in Manila for the foreseeable future.”

Carlos Candal, GMG Productions’ CEO added that “Following the incredible success of Hamilton, and continuing with GMGP’s commitment to bringing the absolute pinnacle of musical entertainment to Manila, I could not be more excited to be presenting “Miss Saigon” at the Theater at Solaire. Filipinos have a deep connection with “Miss Saigon” because it has been the stage where countless Filipino artists have had their moment to shine.” “The production has given talents like Lea Salonga, Jon Jon Briones, Joanna Ampil, Rachelle Ann Go, and countless others a platform to showcase their extraordinary skills and passion, and we’re excited to welcome a new company of world-class performers to share the new staging of this phenomenal production”

Torben Brookman, Director of GWB Entertainment, shares “After witnessing the Opening Night of this production in Sydney recently, audiences are in for an absolute treat with the best production of this incredible show that I’ve ever seen – the heat will be on in Manila!
