  • Globe and NABU are working together to help underprivileged Filipino youth learn to read

Globe and NABU are working together to help underprivileged Filipino youth learn to read

Illiteracy is a key issue that hampers an individual’s ability to function in society. It limits employment opportunities and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. In the Philippines, pockets of illiteracy remain despite having a basic literacy rate of more than 95%.

Recognizing the crucial role literacy plays in uplifting lives, Globe has partnered with NABU, a reading app and mother tongue publishing platform that makes literacy accessible to children globally. Based in New York, NABU is a nonprofit organization focused on eradicating poverty through increased literacy.

The partnership is in line with Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including UN SDG No. 4 on the provision of quality education, and UN SDG No. 17, which highlights the value of partnerships in achieving the sustainable development goals.

“Globe is always looking for ways to empower Filipinos. We believe that literacy is a fundamental right that should be accessible to everyone. This partnership with NABU will help us make reading more accessible to Filipinos, so they can learn, appreciate local culture, and reach their full potential,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer of the Globe Group.

“We are excited to be partnering with Globe on this project. This is the first time that we are venturing into the Philippine market. We are confident that this partnership will help us solve the imbalance in children’s book creation and distribution,” said Tanyella Evans, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Creator of NABU.

According to a joint report released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the World Bank titled “Where are we on Education Recovery?,” the Philippines is currently experiencing a “learning poverty” where an estimated 70% of 10-year olds in low- and middle-income countries are unable to read or comprehend a simple story.

Their findings also showed how learning has become further exacerbated by the global pandemic, driven by the disruption to in-person schooling.

Through this partnership, Globe will serve as a distribution unit for NABU’s e-books throughout the Philippines to complement students’ learning. Anyone can access the Nabu.org mobile app for free.

Together, the two organizations are bringing more than a hundred Filipino books, with some translated into regional languages such as Hiligaynon, Bicolano, Ilokano, Cebuano, and Maranao. NABU believes that helping children read in their local language first allows their confidence to grow. Having culturally-represented, original, and relatable stories in bilingual text increases the child’s motivation to read.

Over the next two years, Globe and NABU will seek to expand the platform’s reach by partnering with schools and learning facilities. NABU is also excited to hone the skills of Filipino creatives such as writers and illustrators to continue telling and creating more stories that reach a wider audience.

The NABU: Multilingual Kids Books app may be downloaded for free on Google Play Store and App Store. For further details, visit https://www.nabu.org/read/ or https://www.nabu.org/tl/philippines.

Globe has always been a strong advocate of reading and comprehension. It has the Globe eLibrary mobile app and website (https://globeelibrary.ph/), which contain hundreds of English classic titles, age-appropriate storybooks, eLearning videos, and other resource materials that can be viewed online or downloaded for later use.

Globe fully restores services in 7 typhoon-hit provinces

Globe has fully restored services in seven provinces stricken by Super Typhoon Karding less than 24 hours since the weather system left the Philippine area of responsibility, bringing back much needed connectivity in affected areas. Below are updates on Globe services in areas affected by the Typhoon.

As of Tuesday, Globe has reached 100% restoration in Northern Luzon provinces Bulacan, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Tarlac and Zambales, and in the Southern Luzon provinces of Rizal and Quezon, particularly the Polillo Group of Islands. This is on top of immediate restoration of service in Metro Manila.

Globe has fully restored services in seven provinces stricken by Super Typhoon Karding less than 24 hours since the weather system left the Philippine area of responsibility, bringing back much needed connectivity in affected areas.

Meanwhile, restoration efforts are nearly complete in Nueva Ecija, among the worst-hit provinces.

Globe initiated field operations in storm-hit areas even while the effects of Karding still lingered on Monday, sending out technical teams who were prepositioned in areas on the typhoon’s path before it made landfall.

“Our network personnel have been working round the clock to make sure outages due to Typhoon Karding will be minimal. Through their efforts, we quickly reached full restoration in most of the typhoon-hit provinces,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer of the Globe Group.

On Monday, Globe restored service in the National Capital Region and four islands in the Polillo group, including Burdeos, Patnanungan, Polillo and Jomalig. Teams finished restoring service in Panukulan, also in Polillo, Tuesday.

Karding left the Philippine area of responsibility Monday night after bringing heavy rains and howling winds in parts of Luzon, leaving at least eight dead and causing an estimated P160 million in agricultural damage, particularly in severely hit Nueva Ecija.

To ensure fast and efficient service restoration in anticipation of the monster storm, Globe had preposition field personnel over the weekend in areas forecast to be affected by Karding.

Four of the Best KPOP acts in one Epic Show

Super Junior, Girl’s Generation, BTOB, and Red Velvet headline the first Best of Best KPOP Concert in the Philippines.

    snsd-live-at-philippine-arena suju-live-in-manila

One of K-pop’s biggest names, Super Junior and Girl’s Generation, along with two other promising groups, BTOB and Red Velvet, become the first ever K-pop acts to perform in the newly established Philippine Arena last April 12. Definitely one of the most surreal experiences for all Kpop fans. From the exciting pre-event activities to the unbelievable main show, I felt like I was transported to South Korea. Philippine Arena was already buzzing when I arrived at 5:00pm. There were activities and fun games outside the venue, amazing food stands and thousands of excited KPop fans.

    red-velvet-live-in-manila btob-live-in-manila

SM Entertainment’s rookie girl group Red Velvet opened the night with “Ice Cream Cake.” Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and newest member Yeri, were welcomed with screams and fan chants despite debuting only last August 2014.

Wendy, with her undeniable aegyo (cuteness,) returned the warm reception, “It’s our first time in the Philippines! Thank you so much, guys! It’s great! You guys are great!”

    red-velvet-philippine-arena

The girls also sang songs from their album, starting with “Somethin Kinda Crazy,” followed by “Candy,” and then ended with their debut song “Happiness”.

Next in line was Cube Entertainment’s seven-member boy group BTOB (also known as Born to Beat.) Eunkwang, Minhyuk, Changsub, Hyunsik, Peniel, Il-hoon, Sungjaemade their Filipina Melodies (their official fan club name) swoon with songs “Thriller,” “Second Confession,” and “Winter’s Tale.”

    born-to-beat-live-at-philippine-arena

    btob-live-at-philippine-arena

Youngest Sungjae also shouted “Mahal kita, Philippines!” While Il-hoon “thrilled” their fans when he said “I’ll make you happy tonight!”

The group ended their stage with hits song “Beep Beep,” and “WOW.”

Screams again filled the arena as Girl’s Generation went up the stage. The girls started with the Japanese version of “Mr. Taxi” and the Korean versions of “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)” and “Hoot.”

Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun wore matching pink dresses. The girls last performed in the Philippines, with former member Jessica, last January 2013 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. This is the first time the group performed as an eight-membered group in the country.

    girls-generation-live-in-manila

Girl’s Generation also took the fans back in time when they performed their earlier songs “Kissing You” and “Complete.”

Tiffany attested, “It’s been a long time since we sang “Complete” for you guys.”

    girls-generation-live-in-manila-2015

Seohyun then thanked the Filipino SONEs, “The energy you’re giving us, we’ll be taking back home with us. “Thank you so much! We love you!”

The group ended with another hit song “Mr. Mr.”

    super-junior-live-in-manila-2015

Last but definitely not the least, Super Junior finally (and literally) goes up the stage while singing “Shirt” followed by “This is Love” and “Evanesce.”

A sea of Sapphire Blue light sticks filled the arena, enough for member KangIn to exclaim, “I thought this was a Super Show!”

    super-junior-manila-concert-2015

Fans then chanted “SS6! SS6!” Asking the group to do another Super Show in the country soon.

Eight out of the thirteen members performed for the ELFs present at the Philippine Arena, namely Leeteuk, Heechul, Kangin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun.

The members showed off their usual goofy selves on stage, while telling their fans how much they missed them.

    Heechul shouted, “Mahal kita!”

    Leeteuk also greeted, “Mabuhay Philippine!”

Eunhyuk then added, “Really, long time no see!”

While Siwon asked, “We missed your voice! Did you miss us?”

The fans, of course, shouted “Yes!”

    super-junior-philippine-arena super-junior-live-in-manila

Afterwards, youngest Kyuhyun performed his solo song “At Gwanghwamun,” duo Donghae and Eunhyuk then wowed the crowed with “Oppa Oppa,” the rest of the members joined in before the song ended.

Super Junior ended the night with “Mr. Simple,” “Mamacita,” and a bit of their “Choki Choki Dance!”

    suju-live-in-manila

Being part of Best of Best in the Philippines was overwhelming. The choreography, personalities and colourful outfits were definitely the best. On the other hand, K-Pop fans were treated to a night that they will surely cherish forever. They got to see 4 of the best Kpop idols at the Philippine Arena and totally enjoyed all the performances. I’m looking forward to see more shows to be held at the biggest indoor arena in the world because of friendly staff, state of the art facilities, superb sound and affordable food inside the arena. Overall, the show was well-organized, from shuttle, pre-event show up to the main event. The atmosphere of the night was incredible and some people got really emotional towards the end of the show and I hope they will come back soon specially a solo show by SNSD.
