ONE OK ROCK Is Coming To Manila For An Explosive Show In May

Get ready as PULP Live World makes this new year even more exciting with its first announcement for 2020. ONE OK ROCK EYE OF THE STORM ASIA TOUR 2020 Live in Manila, happening on May 2, 2020 at the Araneta Coliseum, is the newest addition to PULP’s explosive lineup of upcoming 2020 shows!

The Japanese rock phenoms are taking their most breathtaking world tour yet to the Philippines, and Manila will be in the path of this beautiful storm as AEG Presents and PULP Live World present this monumental show.

This upcoming concert marks ONE OK ROCK’s highly-awaited return to the Philippines, following memorable shows in 2016 and 2018 where they first built the solid connection that they have with their Filipino fans. Taka, Toru, Ryota, and Tomoya are excited to take us into their newest era as a band, having gone through many changes throughout a continuing story of evolution and progress.

The past year has indeed been a huge one for the quartet who have gone on to make an impact on a global scale with their latest album, Eye of the Storm. Released in February 2019, the latest ONE OK ROCK album features a side of the band that remains ambitious and hungry, eager to build on a fearless and unapologetic exploration of sounds and styles.

“Rather than it feeling like [other] albums we made, it feels like an extension of what we have been doing. And the fans, they have responded back—existing and new fans alike,” reflects ONE OK ROCK in an exclusive interview with PULP Magazine. “After all these years we are continuously evolving, taking a new shape. That’s Rock n Roll and that’s ONE OK ROCK!”

What we have are vivid memories of ONE OK ROCK proving themselves to be one of the best and most impressive live bands to play in the Philippines. The near-perfect execution of their over-the-top live performance is definitely something to look forward to, and is proof that they are still a pretty solid rock band, with their shows having a reputation for being some of the most energetic gigs for music fans to experience.

ONE OK ROCK have come a very long way. One might lose count of how many albums the Japanese quartet has put out throughout a career that has run for about 15 years now. But it’s undeniable that in these recent years, with their explosion in the US, in Europe, throughout Asia, and all over the international rock scene, the band has been relentless. They keep setting their sights on new goals as a band and they stop at nothing to reach them.

Happening on May 2, 2020 at the Araneta Coliseum, ONE OK ROCK EYE OF THE STORM ASIA TOUR 2020 Live in Manila is brought to you by AEG Presents and PULP Live World. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and we rock and roll by 8:00 p.m.

  • 13 B-Side Tracks Of SEVENTEEN That Make Our Days

13 B-Side Tracks Of SEVENTEEN That Make Our Days

Even before their official debut in 2015, the members of South Korean boy group SEVENTEEN have already impressed us with their seemingly innate talent to create music and performances, and through the years, they have proven the world perfectly fitted the title self-producing idols is to them.

In celebration of the boy group’s artistry and as we count down to only a month before SEVENTEEN WORLD TOUR “ODE TO YOU” IN MANILA, we took on the challenge to choose only 13 B-side tracks from the boys’ amazing discography — a difficult task, we must say — that deserve spots on your every day playlist.

SEE ALSO: 17 Reasons Why We Stan SEVENTEEN

    #1 Shining Diamond

“Shining Diamond” is the first track in SEVENTEEN’s debut extended play 17 Carat. Prior to being released as part of the EP’s track list, the boys performed the song for the first time at Yongsan iPark Mall in April 10, 2015 as part of their mission in SEVENTEEN Project: Debut Big Plan which aired the performance on its second episode.

The song was written by Woozi, Vernon, S.Coups, and Kim Min Jeong, with music by Woozi, MasterKey, and Rishi.

    #2 20

“20” is a song performed by the vocal team, composed of Jeonghan, Joshua, Woozi, DK, and Seungkwan. It is also part of the boys’ debut EP 17 Carat. The sweet lyrics, penned by Woozi and Won Yeong Heon, blend perfectly with the lovely voices of the vocal team.

    #3 Fronting

The hip hop team teamed up with Woozi and Hoshi for “Fronting”, the first track of the boy group’s second extended play Boys Be. S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon fronted their rap skills in this song, giving the fandom another track to flex to non-Carats.

The track was written by Woozi, S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon, with music and arrangement from Pledis Entertainment’s resident producer Bumzu.

    #4 Drift Away

No one will “drift away” from SEVENTEEN — that’s for sure — especially with tracks like “Drift Away” that will definitely make you slip deep into the diamond life. The song combines the vocals and rap skills of the boys perfectly, creating a perfect harmony with the right amount of vocals and raps in the song.

Sixth on the track list of the boy group’s first studio album Love & Letter, the song was penned by Woozi, S.Coups, Hoshi, Mingyu, and Seungkwan. Woozi also took charge of the music, while Bumzu arranged the song.

    #5 Monday to Saturday

“Monday to Saturday” treats listeners to another version of SEVENTEEN’s hit song “Mansae”, giving it a hip hop sound and lyrics while keeping the original’s highlight. It feels fresh, yet familiar at the same time. The song was performed by the hip hop team in the boy group’s concert and was later included in the Love & Letter album, along with the vocal team’s new take on “Adore U” and the performance team’s new version of “Shining Diamond”.

“Monday to Saturday” was written by Woozi, S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, Vernon, and Bumzu. Woozi, S.Coups, Vernon, and Bumzu worked on the music of the track.

    #6 Love Letter

A sweet love letter from SEVENTEEN arrived through the song “Love Letter”! Another track from Love & Letter album, the song was written by Woozi, S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon. Woozi worked with Won Young Heon and Dong Ne Hyung for the music.

A music video was also released with a cute dedication to Carats. It was the perfect summer song that will remind us of those summer loves. Plus, it was such a happy sight to see the boys having fun in the music video.

    #7 Healing

“Healing”, as it name suggests, is truly healing. The song’s upbeat sound and inspirational lyrics hit us deep and serve as reminder that it’s okay to take a break and prioritize ourselves.

“Healing” was released as part of the repackaged version of Love & Letter album. Woozi, S.Coups, Mingyu, Vernon, and Dino worked together to write the song. Similar with “Love Letter”, Woozi worked with Won Young Heon and Dong Ne Hyung for the song which also has a music video!

    #8 Highlight

“Highlight” was released as a performance unit song in the extended play Going SEVENTEEN. Later on, the boy group came out with a 13-member version which they performed in music shows and concerts.

All the members of the performance team, Hoshi, Jun, The8, and Dino, contributed on the song’s lyrics where they worked with Bumzu and Lee Yoo Jung. Hoshi also teamed up with Bumzu for the song’s music.

    #9 My I

“My I” is a song performed by Jun and The8 and was released as one of the tracks of SEVENTEEN’s fourth EP A|1. The song came out in two versions — Korean and Chinese. China-line also took charge in writing the lyrics of the song, together with Bumzu. Woozi also lent a hand to his members by making the music of the track.

“My I” was also accompanied by a beautiful and breathtaking choreography where Jun and The8 use ribbon. Did we say “My I” is beautiful? We are gonna say it again — it is beautiful.

    #10 Campfire

“Campfire” is a soothing song from the boy group’s second studio album Teen,Age, filled with warm words of promises to keep the memories and be together. It is a song written by Woozi, S.Coups, Jeonghan, Wonwoo, Mingyu, The8, DK, Vernon, and Seungkwan with Bumzu.

It once again showcased the perfect harmony of the members’ voices and how versatile each one of them.

    #11 Pinwheel

Speaking of harmony, the vocal team created a beautiful song that is a perfect background for a Korean drama — “Pinwheel”. “Pinwheel”, released in the Teen,Age album, is emotional in the most beautiful way.

Woozi wrote the song which served as the vocal team’s track in SEVENTEEN’s second studio album, along with the hip hop team’s “Trauma” and the performance team’s “Lilili Yabbay”. A music video was also released featuring the vocal team — Jeonghan, Joshua, Woozi, DK, and Seungkwan.

#12 Our Dawn Is Hotter Than Day

A song that will surely make your dawn hotter than day, “Our Dawn Is Hotter Than Day” has an addictive melody and chorus.

Released as one of the tracks of the You Make My Day EP, the song captivates listeners and make them dance along whenever the boys sing “Oh summer summer summer summer oh”.

    #13 Good To Me

Another catchy song from SEVENTEEN, “Good To Me” is the first track in the boy group’s sixth EP You Made My Dawn. The song was performed by the boys during their comeback week, together with their title track “Home”.

Woozi and Bumzu partnered for the song’s lyrics and music.

  • 7 Yeo Jin Goo Dramas To Watch Before His Manila Fan Meeting

7 Yeo Jin Goo Dramas To Watch Before His Manila Fan Meeting

February will start off extra sweet for fans of South Korean actor Yeo Jin Goo! The versatile actor will finally land on the Philippine shore for YEO JIN GOO <MEMORY LINE> FIRST FAN MEETING IN MANILA 2020, happening on February 1 at the New Frontier Theater.

READ: Yeo Jin Goo To Create Lasting Memories With PH Fans In His First Manila Fan Meeting

Before we fall deeper in love with him next month, we celebrate his astonishing career as an actor through a look back on seven of his drama productions that definitely deserve to be part of our watch list — or should we say re-watch list? *winks

    #1 Moon Embracing The Sun

Yeo Jin Goo debuted as an actor in 2005 through the film Sad Movie which was then followed by roles television including the younger counterpart of the lead roles in Iljimae and Tazza. Although he has continuously appeared in various drama productions and impressed South Korea with his seemingly innate talent in acting, it was in 2012 when he rose to prominence following his appearance in Moon Embracing the Sun.

If you want to see Yeo Jin Goo in hanbok, walking handsomely on the palace grounds with Im Si Wan and if you are into sageuk with a bit of fantasy, check out Moon Embracing the Sun! The 2012 MBC drama dwells on the story of a Joseon king and a female shaman with a serving of political themes on the side. It is a well-loved drama which received an average rating of 33 percent from its 20-episode run. It was also named Best Drama in the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Yeo Jin Goo played the young version of Kim Soo Hyun’s character Lee Hwon, the crown prince. He was so good in his portrayal of the character that he received various accolades from the 6th Mnet 20’s Choice Awards4th Pierson Movie Festival, and MBC Drama Awards.

    #2 Missing You

Missing You reunited Yeo Jin Goo with his Moon Embracing the Sun co-star Kim So Hyun where they played the young versions of Park Yoo Chun and Yoon Eun Hye’s characters, respectively.

The 21-episode MBC drama followed the story of Lee Soo Yeon (Kim So Hyun/Yoon Eun Hye’s character) and Han Jung Woo (Yeo Jin Goo/Park Yoo Chun’s character) from their high school where they were separated due to an unfortunate incident to their reunion as adults where they try to reconcile and move on from the past that hunted them.

Aside from his acting skills, the actor showed off his amazing chemistry with fellow child actor Kim So Hyun in this drama production too!

    #3 Orange Marmalade

If you are into vampires and school dramas, Orange Marmalade is for you! Yeo Jin Goo played the character of Jung Jae Min, the most popular boy in school who hated vampires, but ended up falling in love with Baek Ma Ri (played by AOA’s Seolhyun) who hid her vampire identity.

It’s a unique story, set in a fictional world where humans and vampires coexist. Moreover, the drama marked Yeo Jin Goo’s first leading role on television, officially transitioning from being a child actor to a leading man! For his portrayal, he received the Best New Actor Award, Popularity Award for an Actor, and Best Couple Award with Seolhyun at the KBS Drama Awards.

    #4 Circle

Circle is a science-fiction drama that presented two parallel plots — one that took place in 2017 and one that happened in 2037. It presented an interesting plot that combined sci-fi and mystery. With only 12 episodes, Circle is the perfect drama to watch this weekend if you are in for a weekend date with Yeo Jin Goo!

The actor played Kim Woo Jin in the television series which aired on tvN from May 22 to June 27, 2017. He teamed up with Kim Kang Woo, Gong Seung Yeon, and Lee Gi Kwang in the drama.

    #5 The Crowned Clown

There is something about Yeo Jin Goo and sageuk that match perfectly well. And The Crowned Clown is another testament of that perfect match up! A remake of Masquerade, a 2012 South Korean film, the drama brought back viewers to the Joseon era where a king, in a move to save himself from the assassination ploys of his enemies, puts a clown who bears similar appearance as him, on the throne.

Yeo Jin Goo portrayed dual characters in the series — Ha Seon, the clown and Yi Heon, the King. His performance in the drama gave him a Best Actor nomination at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards.

    #6 My Absolute Boyfriend

My Absolute Boyfriend is already a familiar story to a number of people as it was based on a manga by Yuu Watase titled Absolute Boyfriend and was already adapted into dramas in Japan and Taiwan. But another version with THE Yeo Jin Goo as the “absolute boyfriend” will never hurt.

In the drama, Yeo Jin Goo is Zero Nine, a robot which was programmed to give his selfless and undivided love to his Um Da Da (played by Girls’ Day Min Ah), the woman who activated him.

    #7 Hotel Del Luna

Of course, this list will not be complete without a mention of the actor’s latest work, the well-loved drama Hotel Del Luna which paired him with IU.

Yeo Jin Goo portrayed Koo Chan Sung, a handsome and well-educated man (He is an MBA graduate from Harvard, y’all!), who became the new general manager of a unique and mysterious hotel called Hotel Del Luna which has the moody and seemingly cold-hearted Jang Man Wol (IU) as its owner.

Hotel Del Luna is one of the highest-rated Korean drama in cable history!

Jimmy Eat World To Stage First Manila Show In March

Yet another special show is coming your way from PULP Live World and Skesh Entertainment as JIMMY EAT WORLD are finally making their way to the Philippines, ending the wait that Filipino fans of the band have long endured. JIMMY EAT WORLD LIVE IN MANILA — SURVIVING: THE ASIA TOUR 2020 is happening on March 12, 2020 at the New Frontier Theater, marking the iconic emo/alternative rockers’ very first show in the country.

Ten albums into their continuing journey as a band, Jimmy Eat World have proven themselves to be a band that’s timeless. Surviving, their 10th and latest album, came out in 2019—that’s over 25 years since Jimmy Eat World became a band. Yet right now, it hasn’t felt like they would simply ride on waves of nostalgia; instead, one might say that every album they’ve put out since Bleed American has been representative of a certain point in time or era in the band’s journey, as well as in the life of a fan that has hurtled through adulthood and gone through the motions both on a personal level and in terms of seeing what happens in the world around us. Jimmy Eat World are the same band with the same energy, but with an evolving approach to songwriting and perhaps a progressing take on life as a whole. Succinct and strong, Surviving is all the proof we need that, about two and a half decades on, Jimmy Eat World are here to stay.

  • Yungblud To Make His Debut On Philippine Concert Stage In March

Yungblud To Make His Debut On Philippine Concert Stage In March

Heading to Manila for the very first time is London-based multi-instrumentalist YUNGBLUD, who has set out to include the Philippines in his upcoming Asian tour. Presented by PULP Live World and Skesh Entertainment, YUNGBLUD LIVE IN MANILA: TWISTED TALES OF THE RITALIN CLUB TOUR happens on March 20, 2020 at the SM City North EDSA Skydome.

The young trailblazer, otherwise known as Dominic Harrison, is one of his generation’s most promising and highly anticipated artists. Exploding into the scene in 2018 with his scathing debut album 21st Century Liability, the 22-year-old English singer/songwriter/musician has effortlessly established himself both within and across the pond. With a volatile, rebel-minded, hiphop-infused rock-and-roll style that a steadily growing fanbase deeply resonates with, YUNGBLUD has spawned an unstoppable movement—one spurred by genuine solidarity that has served as a touchstone for his new EP, the underrated youth.

“My fans are constantly telling me about the incredible things they’ve gone through, like coming out to their parents or transitioning to another gender. With every day, every gig, every DM, it’s become less and less about me and more about this whole collective of people coming together to fight for what we believe in,” says YUNGBLUD as he opens up about his fanbase, adding that the new EP is about the different people he’s met and the stories he’s heard over the past couple of years.

“In a world that’s consumed with unjustified hate and just expects us to fall in line, they’ve proven to me that my generation has the passion and intelligence to push for real unity and equality. I feel so hopeful now because of the people I get to meet and talk to every day,” reflects YUNGBLUD who, despite everything going on in the world, faces the road ahead with optimism. “I know that the future’s bright, because we’re the ones creating it.”

Not one to shy away from sticking a middle finger up to senseless oppression, the tongue-in-cheek, genre-bending icon has been encouraging people to be themselves distinctively—to be proud of themselves unapologetically. With commanding live energy and caustic social commentary, YUNGBLUD has proven himself to be quite the performer, breaking any barriers existing between him and his audience. And now he’s setting out to bring us into a movement bound by unity and inspired by hope.

YUNGBLUD LIVE IN MANILA: TWISTED TALES OF THE RITALIN CLUB TOUR, happening on March 20, 2020 at the SM City North EDSA Skydome, is presented by PULP Live World and Skesh Entertainment. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m.

  • VICTON Weaves Unforgettable Memories With PH ALICE In First Manila Fan Meeting

VICTON Weaves Unforgettable Memories With PH ALICE In First Manila Fan Meeting

Words and photos by Danica Lacson

Christmas came early for fans of South Korean boy group VICTON after the boy group treated them to an unforgettable evening of applause-worthy stages, fun interactions, and sweet display of charms in VICTON 1ST ASIA TOUR “VOICE TO ALICE” at the SM City North EDSA Skydome last December 21.

Seungsik, Heo Chan, Sejun, Hanse, Byungchan, and Subin kicked off their first solo fan meeting in the Philippines with “What Time Is It Now?”, a track from their debut extended play Voice To New World which came out in 2016. They then sat down for a talk session where they shared their thoughts on their Asia tour, getting their first win, and coming to the Philippines.

On holding their first solo event in the country, the boys admitted feeling worried and nervous. However, the warm and passionate welcome of their Filipino fans washed away the hesitations and brought them comfort. In fact, as soon as the members came out, Philippine Alice (VICTON’s fans) welcomed them with a sweet banner project to relay their support and express their love. The boys also shared more stories about themselves through the “Secret Photobook” segment where photos of the members or taken by the members were flashed on screen.

Despite the gloomy weather outside, the venue was filled with bright smiles and happy hearts of fans as their favorite boys made sure their wait will all be worth it with a serenade of “Farewell”, a song from their latest extended play Nostalgia.

While the boys prepare for another stage, a VCR of them having fun and playing games was played on screen, showing off their fun-loving nature and close relationship. Seungsik, Heo Chan, Sejun, Hanse, Byungchan, and Subin were so adorable as they take on the punishments.

Everything was all bright and fun, until VICTON returned on stage with a fiery display of their dance skills to the tune of “Gangsta”, making our jaws drop and exclaiming in awe. They then continued to show that they did not come to play with a cool stage of “New World”. *applause applause

But the boys are the only ones deserving the praise because their fans were also the coolest with the hot response they always give the boy group. Seungsik commended Alice for the superb energy, while Byungchan shared his hope that the energy will be sustained until the end (They did!).

VICTON then had a bit of fun together with their fans through a game that divided the boy group into two teams — Team Pabebe (a word they learned that evening) and Team Manila. The intense competition, which saw the members trying to make the audience guess the song name by dancing, resulted to a win by Team Manila. And although Team Pabebe lost the game and received the punishment of doing a sexy modelling, Team Manila generously granted the wish of fans and ended up doing the punishment as well!

Before performing “Time of Sorrow” and their latest song “Nostalgic Night”, the members expressed their hope to come back to Manila with a concert and to release a new album soon. They capped off the night with “Light”, words of gratitude to their fans for a beautiful ending to their Asia tour, and a promise to return soon.

With the Manila show, VICTON successfully concluded their Voice To Alice Asia Tour and granted the wish of their Alice to see them — a perfect gift for the Christmas season. And with their superb performances, lovable charms, and adorable personalities, the boys have surely captivated Manila and created unforgettable memories for their fans as they wait for their promised return.

  • All About WINNER: The Boy Group Who Impresses Everyone With Its Music

All About WINNER: The Boy Group Who Impresses Everyone With Its Music

Known for their potential to create high-quality music recognized by the general public, WINNER has earned the nickname “Trust & Listen” and astounded the Korean music scene with their every release.

Composed of Yoon, Jinu, Hoony, and Mino, the boy group has displayed their stability in the competitive world of K-Pop and their flexibility and diversity in terms of their music — not confining themselves to a four-cornered space, but going beyond corners and experiment beautifully on their art.

The members of WINNER have also actively participated in the production, composition, and songwriting for their albums that tackled various subjects including love, everyday life, and hope.

Before 2014: The Pre-Debut Era of WINNER

Prior to their debut, Yoon, Jinu, Hoony, and Mino participated on Mnet’s WIN: Who Is Next? as Team A, together with former member Nam Tae Hyun. The boys competed against Team B, whose members went on to debut as iKON with Chan Woo.

After three rounds of performances and public voting, Team A went on to win the competition, earning the name “WINNER”. The boys then served as the opening act at BIGBANG’s Japanese dome tour and star in their reality show WINNER TV. They also appeared as guest performers on 2NE1’s All or Nothing tour including the tour’s Manila leg. In addition, the boys joined their fellow YG artists in YG Family Power World Tour.

    2014: Guess Who’s Next — WINNER Makes Highly-Anticipated Debut

After the release of a number of teaser images and videos in anticipation of their debut and the holding of a showcase in the form of a launch party, WINNER made their official debut on August 17 through SBS’ Inkigayo and with the album 2014 S/S and songs “Empty” and “Color Ring”.

They then became the fastest group to win on a music show after securing first place on M! Countdown. Their album also earned the top spot on Gaon chart and Billboard World Album chart.

Their debut year was met with great success as they secure rookie awards and other citations in South Korea and abroad.

WINNER also released a Japanese version of 2014 S/S: Japan Collection and embarked on a Japan tour.

2016: Return With EXIT:E and Final Release As 5

Following their 18-month hiatus, WINNER came back with an extended play EXIT: E with had “Baby Baby” and “Sentimental” as lead singles.

The EP debuted at the top of Gaon chart and at the second spot of Billboard World Album chart. In addition, its lead singles went on to achieve an all-kill status — topping all eight major music streaming platforms. “Baby Baby” also became the most streamed song, among Korean releases, for the first half of the year on QQ Music.

That year, WINNER went on their first ever nationwide concert tour.

    2017: WINNER’s Fate As Four

In November 2016, Nam Tae Hyun left WINNER and YG Entertainment, leading for the boy group to reform into four members.

WINNER made their first release as a four-member boy group with the single album Fate Number For with “Really Really” and “Fool” as lead singles. They once again proved their status as digital monsters with “Really Really” placing number one on Gaon. The song also debuted at the third spot of Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

2017 also saw the boys come out with the single album Our Twenty For which also includes the singles “Love Me Love Me” and “Island”.

2018: Going Everywhere with a Wolrd Tour

The following year, they released their second studio album Everyday with the single of the same title. It was also in 2018 when the boys’ embarked in their first ever world tour Everywhere including Philippines as one of the tour’s stop.

Before 2018 ended, WINNER released the single album Millions which featured the single of the same name.

2019: Crossing Paths with WINNER with New Album and Tour

WINNER kicked off their 2019 releases with the extended play We, led by “Ah Yeah”. The EP topped Gaon with over 129,000 copies sold. They followed up We with their third EP titled Cross, released ahead of their upcoming Cross Tour which will once again see WINNER back in the Philippines for a concert on January 25, 2020 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

  • The Rose Blooms In First Concert In The Philippines

The Rose Blooms In First Concert In The Philippines

    By Sandra Mae Laureano

The Rose held their first ever concert in the Philippines at the Samsung Hall on December 15. Presented by MyMusicTaste, We Rose You: Live in Manila was a resounding success as Black Roses (The Rose fans) screamed and sang their hearts out for almost two hours. Their current world tour, which started in August, has reeled in crowds across Europe, America and Southeast Asia. They are also set to hold encore concerts in Seoul and Busan at the end of the month.

The Korean pop-rock band, composed of Woosung (lead vocals, guitar), Dojoon (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Jaehyeong (bass) and Hajoon (drums), is steadily gaining popularity globally due to their concoction of soft-rock that will catch your ears and slightly tug at your heartstrings.

Although the show did come with some delay due to the band fine-tuning the audio set-up, Black Roses were treated to a live audio feed of the band’s soundcheck session, hyping up the show even further. Fans patiently queued up early afternoon until 7:30 p.m. just to snag the best viewing spots in the concert. The standing area was visibly packed with people up to the back.

When the lights went out, the red glow of the band’s official lightsticks floated across the venue, the crowd’s cheers getting louder and louder by the second. They started off with ballads “I.L.Y.” and “Insomnia”. Immediately, fans were enthralled, singing along so intensely, the concert seemed like a huge sing-along with the band. This fervor lasted all throughout the evening.

“Sorry for the delay. We’re gonna give you guys the best show today,” leader Woosung told the crowd in the beginning.

Their setlist included most of their released songs with a few welcome surprises in between. It included “Candy (So Good)” and “BABY” from Void, as well as “I Don’t Know You” and “Take Me Down” from Dawn. The crowd got to hear the band’s unreleased tracks such as “Photographer”, “OMG” and “놓지 못하게 (Can’t Let Go)” which were songs from their time as an indie band circa 2015 to early 2017.

The Rose also performed striking covers of LANY’s “ILYSB”, The Script’s “Breakeven”, Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby” and The Beatles’ “Hey Jude”. Each member also had their time to shine with their solo/collab stages: Dojoon with James Bay’s “Hold Back the River”, Hajoon and Jaehyeong with Before You Exit’s “Soldier”. Woosung showed off a groovier side of himself with “MOON” and “FACE” from his solo album Wolf.

It seems the band was overwhelmed by the passion of their Filipino Black Roses who cheered and sang along from start to end.

“You know we’ve tried this in many, many cities. We’ve tried London, Moscow, every city. I think Manila is the best crowd,” Dojoon said, looking around the members who, in turn, nodded in approval.

“Manila has been the best crowd, the best country, the best city we’ve ever been to, so thank you! Thank you for your support! We rose you! We love you,” Woosung expressed his gratitude.

They capped off the evening with “RED” which is their latest single.

  • Lee Jin Hyuk Shines Like The Sun In His 1st Fan Meeting In Manila

Lee Jin Hyuk Shines Like The Sun In His 1st Fan Meeting In Manila

    By Sandra Mae Laureano

If you weren’t a fan of Lee Jin Hyuk before going to his fan meeting at the New Frontier Theater last Saturday, you would immediately be converted into one right after stepping out of the venue. On December 14, the 23-year old K-Pop artist held his first fan meeting in Manila, and he instantly captured a lot of hearts with his candid demeanor and dazzling positivity. Much like his famed nickname “Baby Sun”, he showed that he can be an energizing ray of optimism and fun that his fans (called “V-Dans”) need.

Lee Jin Hyuk first made his debut as a rapper of the ten-member boy group UP10TION in 2015. Four years later, he joined the (in)famous boy group survival reality show Produce X 101. While he didn’t make the cut, his participation in the show portrayed his many charms which, in turn, earned him the favor and interest of the general public. And what exactly are those charms? Read on to find out more.

#1 Lee Jin Hyuk is naturally bubbly and funny.

During the Q&A session, Jin Hyuk was so eager to speak. Sunny Kim, the emcee for the event, asked the questions in English. A translator who was beside him onstage relayed the message to him. He often answered in Korean while Sunny translated his words to the crowd. However, Jin Hyuk sometimes went the extra mile by expressing himself through sound effects and improvised actions.

For instance, when asked if he had already tried any Filipino food, he said he hadn’t, but backstage, his fans gave him a gift. He then acted out unveiling a certain item, his eyes widening in surprise and gave out a resounding “woah” and said something like “there was a small pig”. As it turned out, that was his first time to see the Filipino delicacy lechon (roasted suckling pig). He said he wasn’t able to try it at that time (probably because he didn’t know how to eat it), but he was certainly intrigued. He promised to try it after the show.

The fan meeting also included a slideshow of HYUKSTAGRAM (photos he posted on his Instagram) in different scenarios of daily life. It showed him taking a walk, doing photoshoots, taking selfies. Sunny remarked that even though he’s sweaty, he still looks good. Jin Hyuk wittily replied, “because I’m hot,” which had the crowd cheering and laughing. “Like the sun!” he exclaimed.

#2 He takes games very seriously. And yes, he tries his best in each one, too.

The fan meeting had a series of games, and Jin Hyuk was more than willing to take on the challenge. There was tumbang preso wherein he was given a giant rubber slipper to topple down a giant can. The catch: the slipper was extremely lightweight and would fly off in unwanted directions when hurled with full force. Jin Hyuk was in full-concentration mode as he tried repeatedly (and failed repeatedly as well), but with his determination, he actually succeeded. As a victory ceremony, he jumped around as if he won a huge tournament.

He also aced the 2X speed dance for his title track “I Like That”, did ten push-ups, showed three aegyo poses, shot through rows of balloons, and danced “Havana” like a pro during the random play dance game. Although it must have been tiring, the bright smile on his face never faltered.

One of the most memorable outcomes of the evening was the morning call challenge. Basically, he was tasked to create an alarm for the fans. He was hesitant at first, but he blurted out “Good morning, sweet darling”. As much as the fans were delighted, Jin Hyuk found himself uncontrollably laughing out of embarrassment. He even forbade V-Dans to post it on SNS, but of course, the recording found its way across the net. As a follow up to this, he also made a good night version in his V-Live two nights after the event.

#3 His rapper name would be MASA-RAP.

Jin Hyuk is mainly a rapper, but he has yet to be given a rapper name. Fortunately, Filipino V-Dans were smart enough to give him the name “MASA-RAP” which means “delicious”. Jin Hyuk, amused by the pun, tried on the name for a bit and did a short rap.

#4 When he takes the stage, he owns it.

After debuting as a solo artist last month, Lee Jin Hyuk is starting to make a name for himself as a performer. His album S.O.L gives a taste of his formidable rapping skills matched with his alluring stage presence. He performed the catchy “I Like That”, the dark “Villein” and the melodic “Follow Me & You” and he shone through all of them. While he might seem to be a goofball in daily life, he gets intensely serious for his live performances.

Trivia: When asked which song is his favorite, he said he liked all 3 songs equally because it showed his different sides.

#5 Jin Hyuk 60% legs. Literally.

Get this: Jin Hyuk is 185 cm tall. His legs are 110 cm long. This was measured by Sunny Kim using an actual tape measure. The title “Daddy Long Legs” really does suit him.

#6 He greatly values his V-Dans and HONEY10.

One of Jin Hyuk’s most endearing qualities is his receptivity towards his fans. During the fan meeting, he wasn’t focused in being the center of attention. He was also keen on hearing what his fans had to tell him. Fortunately for him, Filipino V-Dans and HONEY10 (fans of UP10TION) were more than willing to let themselves be heard. He patiently listened to the jeers and cheers of the audience when they chanted “walang uuwi” and suggested the MASA-RAP rapper name.

He also looks directly at his fans, in anticipation for their reaction to his words. At one point, he even mimicked a fan’s bewildered expression when he answered the question about his upcoming drama. (Another trivia: He was cast in a drama titled The Way He Remembers which is scheduled to air on March 2020.) He couldn’t reveal the fine details, but he gave out a hint: His role had something to do in the venue at that time. It was such a vague reply which probably explains the fan’s reaction.

Near the end of the evening, fans had a surprise for Lee Jin Hyuk. When he was asking the crowd to pose for a photo, suddenly a tribute video made by his fans was flashed on the screen. The video included snippets of his time with UP10TION up to his moments as a solo artist. Jin Hyuk, visibly taken aback, expressed his sincere appreciation for V-Dans and HONEY10 fans, saying he wouldn’t be here without them. He vowed to develop his skills as an artist and actor and to come back soon.

As a bonus, everyone in the crowd got to hi-touch Jin Hyuk before leaving the theater! What a perfect way to end the evening!

  • Super Junior Closes 2019 “Super Show 8” Concerts With A Meaningful Meeting Day With PH ELFs

Super Junior Closes 2019 “Super Show 8” Concerts With A Meaningful Meeting Day With PH ELFs

Words and photos by Danica Lacson

From the jaw-dropping and magnificent stage design and lighting to the solid and entertaining performances and heartwarming fandom love, SUPER JUNIOR WORLD TOUR – SUPER SHOW 8: INFINITE TIME in Manila was true to its name — it was, indeed, super.

December 15 marked another milestone as Super Junior — the first K-Pop boy group to ever stage a solo concert in the Philippines back in 2010 — stages their fifth solo concert in the country, bringing the final leg of Super Show 8 for 2019 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

It was a meaningful day for the boys, who returned to the Philippine concert stage after more than a year and following the end of all the members’ military service, and for ELFs as they celebrate 14 years of Super Junior’s outstanding career as a group and as individuals.

Excitement resonated all over the arena as the lights dimmed to signal the start of Super Show 8 which kicked off with a mesmerizing show by fans’ lightsticks flickering to the tune of “Superman”. It was marvelous and breathtakingly beautiful, painting promising another SUPER SHOW.

And the expectations were not wrong. The Kings of Hallyu delivered that and much more, opening the concert with “The Crown”, “A Man In Love”, “Bonamana”, and “Blue World” before proceeding to introduce themselves and poke fun at each other the Super Junior way. “Today is a meaningful day. Me and ELF, meeting day,” said maknae Kyuhyun who adorably tried to convey his message in English.

It was truly an unforgettable meeting day as the boys packed their three-hour concert with a diverse set list of songs of various genres and from their different albums in the past 14 years. ELFs witnessed the first live performances in the country of “Heads Up”, “I Think I”, “Somebody New”, and “Super Clap”, songs from Time Slip, the boy group’s ninth Korean-language studio album released in October this year.

The concert also reminisced Super Junior’s earlier eras and showcased the boys’ wide-ranging vocals through the stages of “Sexy, Free, and Single”, “Mr. Simple”, “Opera”, “Love Disease”, “She’s Gone”, “My All Is In You”, “Believe”, “No Other”, “Rokkugo”, “Devil”, “Shirt”, “Mamacita”, and “Black Suit”.

Super Junior – K.R.Y. got everyone wowing with their impressive solo dances, while Super Junior – D&E and Shindong sweetened the night with a lovely performance of “ELF Song”. Leader Leeteuk and Super Junior’s very own Santa Claus Siwon did not also miss the opportunity to show off their dancing skills through the unreleased song “Hairspray”. The members also added spice to their performances with dance breaks that deserved our super claps.

A Super Junior concert will never be complete without the legendary and timeless hit that catapulted the boy group to Hallyu King status — “Sorry, Sorry”! Leeteuk, Yesung, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun got everyone singing along to their greatest hits “Sorry, Sorry – Answer” and “Sorry, Sorry”. It was a nostalgic and proud moment, taking everyone back to the era that started it all for most ELFs in the Philippines before capping off the evening and ending a decade of Super Show with “Show” and “Too Many Beautiful Girls”.

Super Show 8 showed us the immense and unwavering influence of Super Junior in the country, solidifying their reign as Hallyu Kings, as ELFs made the concert more beautiful thanks to their efforts and dedication. Fans came together to gift their Supermen with touching support projects including banners, hearts, and a special message board that read “I (heart emoji) SJ”.

It was heartwarming to witness the solid passion of the fandom and the cheers they gave, not only the members present that evening, but to Heechul, who had to sit out of the tour due to health reasons and to Sungmin, who is currently on hiatus from the group activities. The fandom name is truly perfect because they are really the Everlasting Friends of Super Junior. As Leeteuk said, “There is no other like you guys.”

SUPER JUNIOR WORLD TOUR – SUPER SHOW 8: INFINITE TIME in Manila has ended with so much beautiful memories to look back to and promises to hold on to as we wait for the boys’ return with a new album and to start another decade of Super Show.

SUPER JUNIOR WORLD TOUR – SUPER SHOW 8: INFINITE TIME in Manila is presented by SM Entertainment, Label SJ, Dream Maker Entertainment, and PULP Live World, and powered by Globe. Special thanks to PULP Live World for the invitation to the event.
