INTERVIEW: Epik High on their Career, Future Plans, and How They Wished to be Remembered

After many years since their last solo concert in the country, Epik High will once again take the Philippine concert stage for the greatest show on Earth at the New Frontier Theater on November 30.

READ: Epik High Brings โ€œEpik High Is Hereโ€ Concert Tour to Manila in November

But, before they deliver another electrifying show, Tablo, DJ Tukutz, and Mithra Jin provided Philippine Concerts the opportunity to get to know the phenomenal trio who blessed the world with songs that resonate with every emotion, put truths into words, and give life moments the soundtrack we always deserved as they talk about their longstanding career, future plans, and advice to the next generation of artists.

Itโ€™s been almost two decades since you, DJ Tukutz, and Mithra Jin debuted as Epik High. How would you describe the last decades?

Tablo: Itโ€™s been an absolute roller coaster ride. The ups were exhilarating and the downs were frightening. I donโ€™t think there is any group that has lasted this long after being through so many catastrophes. We are actually happy that we can show our fans not only how to rise, but how to rise again after falling. Not many artists can do that.

Is there anything you wish you had done differently when you first started?

Tukutz: I wouldโ€™ve not met Tablo and become a boyband member.

Tablo: I wouldโ€™ve not met Tukutz and become happy.

    Mithra: No comment.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned throughout your long career?

Tablo: Be strong. But before that, have fun.

Many artists look up to you and see you as a role model in the industry. What valuable lessons would you like other artists to take away from your career?

    Tablo: Grow with your fans.

As part of this tour, you will be coming back to the Philippines. What type of memories did your last visit to Manila leave you with, and how does it feel to return to the Philippines and perform a solo concert again?

Mithra: We loved it so much we had to come back right away. Get tickets NOW!!!

What words will you use to describe your Filipino fans?

    Tablo: Beautiful.

    Tukutz: Kind

    Mithra: Exciting!

What kind of show should Epik High’s Filipino fans expect this time?

Tablo: It will be the greatest show on Earth. It might also be the last time we perform in Manila for a long time, so donโ€™t miss it.

What kind of music or album can we expect from Epik High in the future

Tablo: We have something almost ready. Letโ€™s just say, itโ€™ll be delicious.

Over the years, you have teamed up with numerous musicians. If you had the chance, among the artists you havenโ€™t collaborated with, who would you want to work with and what kind of project would you collaborate on?

Tablo: We would love to work with Filipino artists! Recommend them to us!!! And us to them please!!!

No one can deny your major contribution to the Korean music industry and the music industry in general, with nearly two decades under your belt, an impressive discography, multiple accolades, and more. Your influence is truly incalculable. What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

Tablo: We donโ€™t have grand wishes. Just want someone to remember that Epik High was here.

7 Epik High Songs to Add to Your Playlist

Epik High continues to be a K-Pop phenomenon and one of the most admired musicians in the world. They gave the world the best tunes, which resonate with every emotion and serve as a soundtrack for every occasion, through their remarkable and diverse repertoire.

As Tablo, DJ Tukutz, and Mithra Jin make their way to the Philippine concert stage, we reflect on the two-decade history of one of the long-standing groups whose music defined and continues to define generations. We reminisce on the years and count down the days before the Epik High is Here Tour lands in Manila with a list of seven of their songs that should be on everyone’s playlist.

SEE ALSO: Why EPIK HIGHโ€™s Manila Show is One that You Wouldnโ€™t Want to Miss

Song #1: Lesson One (Tablo’s Word)

“Lesson One (Tablo’s Word),” from Epik High’s debut Korean studio album, Map of the Human Soul, is a strong and controversial song that expresses and dives into the human truth. Despite its 2003 release, the song is still relevant and resonates with the world we live in and the ideologies that control humanity.

    Song #2: Fly

In the early years of Epik High, their “lyrically intricate music” did not appeal to the general population in South Korea, resulting in the dismal performance of their earlier releases. As a result, Swan Songs, their third studio album, was planned to be their final record. However, the universe had other ideas for the group, as it turned out to be the record that catapulted them to mainstream stardom.

The album, which features a variety and mix of hip-hop, electronica, rock, and jazz, was hailed by music critics and the Korean mainstream public upon its initial release. “Fly”, the lead single of Swan Songs, also gave Epik High five music show victories. In addition, the song earned the trio the Hip-Hop Award at the 2005 Golden Disc Award, Song of the Year at the 2005 Melon Music Award, and Best Hip-Hop Performance at the 2005 Mnet KM Music Video Festival.

    Song #3: Fan

Epik High continued to gain mainstream success with their fourth studio album, Remapping the Human Soul. Despite the album’s sales being age-restricted due to its contentious subject matter, which included sex, religion, and war, and several of its songs were forbidden from being broadcast on South Korean radio stations, the album became the third best-selling album of 2007 in South Korea. Remapping the Soul was named Album of the Year at the 2007 Mnet Asian Music Awards, Best Album at the 2007 Seoul Music Awards, and Best Hip Hop Album at the 2008 Korean Music Awards.

Leading the album as the title track, “Fan” went on to give Epik High five music show wins. It was also Cyworld Digital Music Awards’ Song of the Month in February and Mnet KM Music Festival’s Best Hip Hop Performance in 2007.

    Song #4: It’s Cold

A collaboration with Lee Hi, “It’s Cold” is one of the tracks of Epik High’s seventh studio album, 99 — their first release under YG Entertainment. The song also marked the trio’s first single following a three-year hiatus.

“It’s Cold” further proved the unwavering chart power of Epik High as it dominated various charts in South Korea upon its release and achieved an all-kill. The song highlights Tablo and Mithraโ€ฒs sensitive lyrics and features then-new artist Lee Hi’s unique vocal style. The song’s lyrics describe two people who are emotionally incapable after repeatedly falling in love and breaking up.

Song #5: Spoiler & Happen Ending

“Spoiler” and “Happen Ending” served as the title tracks of Shoebox, Epik High’s eighth studio album, which received much acclaim from critics and the general public as evidenced by its outstanding chart performance in South Korea and internationally. Billboard’s Jessica Oak described the album as “lavish both sonically and lyrically”.

“Happen Ending” is a sorrowful hip-hop ballad about feeling helpless and disillusioned about love following yet another failed romance. In contrast, “Spoiler” tells the tale of a man who predicts the end of his relationship after seeing a movie spoiler.

    Song #6: LOVEDRUNK

Teaming up with Crush on the song and with IU and Jin Seo Yeon on the music video, Epik High delivered a combination of a melancholic ballad and hip-hop in “LOVEDRUNK”, the title track of their second extended play, Sleepless in ____________. The song is immensely somber, with a standout performance from Crush.

Tablo also described the song as a song about realizing why people think alcohol tastes sweet after their first breakup or other traumatic experience.

“LOVEDRUNK” earned Epik High two music show wins and the Best Rap/Hip Hop Award at the 2019 Melon Music Awards.

    Song #7: Gray so Gray

Epik High reunited with singer-songwriter Younha in “Gray so Gray”, the lead single of Epik High Is Here ไธ‹, Part 2. The alternative-R&B single “Gray So Gray” elicits feelings of regret and longing in listeners by thriving on a bed of hip-hop beats and soaring with mellow piano notes and clear percussion sounds.

  • Ben&Ben delivers a love song that is unapologetically bare in its messaging on โ€œDearโ€

Ben&Ben delivers a love song that is unapologetically bare in its messaging on โ€œDearโ€

After bagging five wins including Album of the Year at the recently concluded Awit Awards 2022, Ben&Ben returns with a new single that captures the essence of romantic love without forcing or expecting anything in return.

Setting itself apart from the conventional themes often associated with the subject, the nine-piece band encapsulates love that is earned through perfect timing and experience.

On “Dear,” Ben&Ben interprets a love song that is unapologetically bare in its messaging.

“We think it’s equally important to drop any notion of wanting to deliberately steer clear of potential sounds and themes we may have already done when being unapologetic and honest in songwriting and arranging,” the folk-pop collective says in a statement. “Like in love, the more you fight the feeling, the more one might feel internally dissonant.”

Penned by Paolo Benjamin and Miguel Benjamin, “Dear” serves as a reflection of the bandโ€™s collective and individual experiences with love so far and how one becomes stronger after going through bittersweet lessons in life. The band recorded the song at A.R. Rahman’s Firdaus Studio during their time at Expo 2020 Dubai.

“Dear is a song that tries to capture the feeling of a deeper kind of romantic love; one that begins when a person surrenders the pursuit of a lover itself to a higher power,” reveals Ben&Ben.

From a production standpoint, “Dear” evokes the timeless feeling of nostalgia and earnestness, while capturing the sound of a generation drawn into โ€˜70s singer-songwriter calm and pop-rock vigor.

“Not only were we able to use their world-class studio space and equipment, but we also had the pleasure of working with the stellar team at Firdaus Studio, including Peter El Khoury, Alexander Theux, Theodore Danso, and Ali Hassan,” says the multi-award-winning band. “Unlike most of our tracks that we record individually in the studio, we decided to record this one together as a full band, and we feel the final track really reflects that more โ€˜old-schoolโ€™ feeling of looseness and authenticity.”

Ben&Ben hopes that music fans will connect instantly with the song and get a very valid answer to the question, “How do I know when Iโ€™m sure about somebody?” As the Paninindigan Kita act puts it, “We also just really hope this song connects people together in a way that they remember the people in their lives whom they can really call โ€˜Dearโ€™ as well.”

Ben&Benโ€™s “Dear” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch the recorded live version here.

Fantasy drama Alchemy of Souls captivated viewers with its magical story of mages finding their destinies and discovering love in the process. The series proved to be a hit all over the world and managed to stay on the Netflix Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) chart for an impressive 15 weeks. And now, the enchanting tale is set to resume on December 10 and we couldnโ€™t be more thrilled. With many stories left unfinished, here are some reasons why you canโ€™t miss the return of the series.

    Jang Ukโ€™s Evolution

Despite being born into a prominent mage family, Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) was initially unable to learn magical skills due to his birth secret. However, everything changes when he meets his new master. Jang Uk then fights against the destiny he was born into and gains new powers. Returning 3 years after coming back to life, Jang Uk is a completely changed person. Weโ€™re definitely intrigued to see a new side of Jang Uk soon.

    The Return of Naksu

Naksu (Go Youn-jung) was a powerful sorceress and assassin before ending up in the body of a blind woman named Mu-deok. From having murderous intentions to experiencing love, Naksu changes drastically. However, she becomes unable to control her situation and everything shifts. Now a mysterious woman with Naksuโ€™s appearance has emerged. Thereโ€™s much to be unraveled with this new development.

    The Friendships

Alchemy of Souls is such a satisfying blend of everything from magic, action, comedy, and friendship. All of the different friendships truly shine! The bromance relationships between Jang Uk, Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun), Park Dang-gu (Yoo In-soo), and crown prince Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) are so endearing. And we canโ€™t forget Mu-deokโ€™s friendships with the boys as well. Will their friendships stay the same or change?

    The Romance

    Alchemy of Souls

Of course, you canโ€™t leave out the romance. In addition to Jang Uk and Naksuโ€™s compelling love, we have many relationships to root for. Have Park Dang-gu and Jin Cho-yeon (Arin)โ€™s lovely plans changed? How about Park Jin (Yu Jun-sang) and Maid Kim (Oh Na-ra)? Will some of the single men find new love interests? Weโ€™re intensely invested in seeing some happy couples.

  • Wanderland Completes Wave 1 Artist Lineup for 2023

Wanderland Completes Wave 1 Artist Lineup for 2023

After a three-year long wait, Wanderland Music & Arts Festival is officially back on track after announcing their first wave of artists for their highly-anticipated return set on March 4 & 5, 2023.ย

The Wave 1 lineup consists of 11 acts that span across the globe with different styles, flairs, and influences, so thereโ€™s plenty to be excited about.

Let us give you a rundown.ย

    Wanderland Festival 2023

    Phoenix makes pivotal return

Right off the batโ€“Phoenix, a pop-alternative band from France, was announced to headline next yearโ€™s season.

Phoenix has been well-loved by Filipino fans, many who have been following them since the early 2000s. The opportunity to catch the bandโ€™s electrifying sounds and infectious melodies live is a champion move and is something one simply cannot pass upโ€“again.

Wanderland 2023 will mark Phoenixโ€™s third visit to the country and we can only imagine what a spectacle it will be.

    Soulful, swoon-worthy superstars

Fall into a dream-like state with soft, lush, and sentimental tunes from Men I Trust (CA) and Stephen Day (US). With carefully-curated melodies and thoughtfully-written lyrics, both artists lead the pack for music thatโ€™s perfect for embracing and romanticizing life.

If thereโ€™s something that could get you feeling like youโ€™re on cloud nine, youโ€™ve found your go-toโ€™s.

    Applaud to Asian acts

Wanderland also sets the stage for discovery and celebration of Asian music. Hailing from Taiwan are alternative-indie pop rock band, Sunset Rollercoaster, and singer-rapper, Leo Wang and making waves from South Korea are alternative K-Pop band, Balming Tiger and K-HipHop artist, George. They are all set to make their debut in the Philippines next year and weโ€™re pumped to experience the diversity and exciting talent from our friends in the region.

Itโ€™s about time we make more noise for Asian music!

Locals with versatile sounds and vocals

No Rome, a homegrown artist now based in London, is known for his collaborations with The 1975, Charli XCX, and dijon, but donโ€™t be fooledโ€”his solo music gets you even more hooked through his mix of shoegaze, R&B, and electronic dream-pop guaranteed to fall into your last song syndrome list.

Blaster, who recently pursued a solo career from the band, IV of Spades, made headlines when he debuted DISKO FOREVER (Japanese Version)โ€”yes, the song is completely sung in Japanese! If this is any indication of what an experimental journey his music holds, then weโ€™re all ears (and dance shoes ready) for what he has prepared for his festival performance.

August Wahh has been establishing her name in the music scene not only locally, but internationally, having been invited to the ASEAN Music Showcase Festival and opening for artists like Daniel Caesar and RAC. If youโ€™re looking to get into the vibe of neo-soul music, August Wahh is your girl.

The Sundown, based in Cebu and champions of Wanderbattle 2020, is finally making their way to Manila to bring their nostalgic anthems and tasteful Cebuano sounds on the Wanderland stage. As their name suggests, should we have them play the sunset slot?

Itโ€™s already a packed roster but itโ€™s just the beginning of the greatest comeback of team Wanderland.

Newsletter subscribers can enjoy a limited WANDERMAIL EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT beginning Nov. 24, 10AM – Nov. 30 or until supplies last. To unlock the discount, a code will be sent via email to each subscriber.

  • Space-Ta hosts listening party for Flight of the White Rekusasu album

Space-Ta hosts listening party for Flight of the White Rekusasu album

Electronic avant-pop artist Space-Ta threw a listening party at Whitespace Manila on November 18, 2022, to celebrate the upcoming release of his full-length debut album, Flight of the White Rekusasu.

Incorporating genre-blurring soundscapes with intricate beats and retro-futurist production, Space-Taโ€™s 8-track record blasted through the speakers as the audience enjoyed free-flowing cocktails and drinks against a backdrop of minimalist, underground club scene.

DJ acts Baby Oliv and Red-i complemented the mood of the event with banger-after-banger jams that evoke after-hour rumination in a retro-futuristic set.

A voiceover that hints about the concept behind Space-Taโ€™s new album was also played during one of the segments of the program. โ€œIn a world where the TIME COUNCIL has countlessly reformatted life as we know it, Space-Ta journeys back in time to explore extinct music genres and bring them back to the planet with the cinematic beauty that they once had,โ€ introduced the VO. โ€œAn enigmatic figure in the 2032 music scene, he opposes norms, defends freedom restricted by the powers-that-be, and rediscovers himself as an artist poised to transform the world.โ€

Flight of the White Rekusasu will be available on digital platforms worldwide on November 25, 2022. The album is set to be released under Lockdown Entertainmentโ€”home to several critically acclaimed artists in the Philippines such as Tarsius, Flying Ipis, Assembly Generals, and more.

    Space-Ta: About The Artist

An elusive figure in the music scene, Space-Ta is a time traveler-philanthropist-musician that lives in the year 2032. From a world where TIME COUNCIL has countlessly reformatted life as we know it, S-T moves back and forth in time to re-establish and reconnect erased music genres that were banned by the TC.

Like graffiti rivals, S-T re-establishes the undone music by collaborating with past musicians to bring back what was lost while simultaneously rediscovering himself in the process.
Space-Taโ€™s story is continually told through music, animation, and various forms of media- all of which are given to his listeners in small doses and through fleeting experiences.

  • Festival of Lights Is Back Live and On-Ground at Ayala Triangle Gardens

Festival of Lights Is Back Live and On-Ground at Ayala Triangle Gardens

Ayala Land makes Christmas happen with the return of Festival of Lights 2022!

After running virtual editions of the Festival of Lights to continue the well-loved tradition while ensuring safety during the pandemic, the most anticipated family Christmas tradition is back LIVE and ON-GROUND at Ayala Triangle Gardens with never-before-seen features to usher a BIGGER and BRIGHTER celebration.

Bobby Dy, Ayala Land President and CEO, shares, โ€œThe Festival of Lights is more than just a visual spectacle and delightful sounds. It is a well-loved annual tradition that has enabled us to connect with the community in a very unique way. It has brought joy to millions as it brings together people from all walks of life and from all over the country.โ€

In partnership with Kroma and Acid House, Ayala Land begins the affair with a fun and quirky introduction to the actual Light Show. Aimed to build a celebratory vibe by creating excitement in light the two-year pause, the intro videoโ€”following the idea of โ€œThe Christmas Lights Factoryโ€โ€”suggests that Santa and the elves are working hard to bring the Light Show back. Projected on the canopy faรงade, everyone gathered at Ayala Triangle Gardens will catch the elves as they prepare the Christmas lights machine to work. As soon as it does, the machine produces lights of various shapes, colors, and sizes. The elves, then, pick these up and transport each element from the screen to the trees surrounding ATG. It ends with Santa with a powerful switch that turns everything on, ready for the Light Show.

Director Ohm David and Lighting Designer Sueyen Austero conceptualized this yearโ€™s grand presentation. As Christmas tunes play, visuals will be projected on the trees around ATG. It begins with moving constellations that slowly form colorful indigenous patterns to tell the story of creation. As the scene builds, the screen blacks out then reveals stars, halos, parols, and other festive icons, which then merge to form a kaleidoscope of images. Moving and turning, it will ultimately end with an explosion of colors.

Accompanying the light show are three holiday medleys. The first is an orchestral rendition headed by the Manila Symphony Orchestra, followed by an upbeat TikTok rendition arranged by Jazz Nicolas and Mikey Amistoso, in collaboration with Tris Suguitan. The show concludes with a soothing chorale rendition by Jazz Nicolas and Mikey Amistoso.

The Festival of Lights has been globally recognized as as one of the best Christmas displays in the world, with many awards and citations received over the years. Bobby Dy furthers, โ€œItโ€™s a platform to showcase the Filipino talent. Together with our team, select Filipino designers, musical composers, and many local artists, have worked together to create this one-of-a-kind original show.โ€

Honorable Abby Binay, Mayor of Makati, muses, โ€œThe lights in Ayala Triangle have always been a symbol of hope, bringing people together and symbolizing the community spirit, which makes our city so unique. As we prepare for the Christmas festivities, let us all remember to keep that spirit alive and continue working towards a better and brighter future. In Makati, we make it happen.โ€

Everyone is invited to watch the Festival of Lights at Ayala Triangle Gardens running every night until January 8, 2023. The show plays every hour, with the first run at 6pm and last run at 10pm.

  • Dive into Netflixโ€™s Slumberland in Manila.

Dive into Netflixโ€™s Slumberland in Manila.

Recently, I had the pleasure of viewing Slumberland at Greenbelt Cinema 3 courtesy of Netflix Philippines, and I must say that it’s a great film full of exciting and meaningful experiences, touching moments, dreams, and hopes.

The film will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will also make you think about the world we live in. I think everyone should watch it at least once because of the compelling story it tells. There are highs and lows, but on the whole, it’s an excellent film that everyone should watch. You might want to bring a box of tissues along, though, because there are some emotional moments.
