One of the most respected R&B voices in the country, Luke Mejares returns to recording with “Tama Na,” a new single under PolyEast Records that showcases a more honest, confrontational side of artistry.
Written by Arnie Mendaros, the track captures the emotional toll of a relationship strained by constant arguments and the desperation to save a love worth fighting for. Moving through frustration, fear and determination, “Tama Na” follows a narrator pleading with his significant other to put an end to pointless fights before they destroy what they have built together.
For Mendaros, the song reflects a familiar reality in many relationships.
“So many relationships end this way. That’s why he’s begging her to stop, before it’s too late and everything is lost.” Says writer Arnie Mendaros.
Beyond its relatable narrative, “Tama Na” marks a shift in Luke’s musical direction, allowing him to push beyond conventional love songs and heartbreak narratives to a wider range of emotions through his music.
“Unlike my past tracks, “Tama Na” is much more confrontational and raw. The vocals and lyrics require a much more vulnerable, exhausted delivery than anything l’ve done before.” Luke shares.
Musically, the song draws inspiration from 1980s and 1990s Motown, blending soul and R&B and pop with distinctly OPM sensibility. Influenced by artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince and The Stylistics, the track combines classic musical influences with a contemporary approach to Filipino pop and soul.
“Sonically, I wanted to mirror the emotional tension of the lyrics. I was heavily influenced by pop, R&B & Motown drawing inspiration from artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, and The Stylistics,” Luke explains.
At the heart of “Tama Na” is Luke’s signature soulful vocals, which has helped establish him as one of the country’s standout R&B singers to a more deliberate recording and production process. From the raw, vulnerable vocal delivery to the interplay of his musical influences, each element is carefully shaped to capture the emotional weight of the lyrics. The result is a track that highlights Luke’s vocal versatility while bringing authenticity to its storytelling.
