  • Dear Evan Hansen Resonates with Manila’s Young Audience

Dear Evan Hansen Resonates with Manila’s Young Audience

On September 5, GMG Productions rolled out the blue carpet for the gala night of Dear Evan Hansen at The Theatre at Solaire, marking the Manila debut of the UK touring cast. Ellis Kirk stepped into the titular role, with Sonny Monaghan as alternate.

The decision to bring the show to Manila was straightforward — the people wanted it. GMG Executive Producer Sam Sewell shared that their programming is shaped by audience surveys. With the chatter at the lobby before the show began, the city’s excitement was undeniable.

Dear Evan Hansen has become a touchstone of the musical theatre genre since its premiere in 2016, winning four Tony Awards, an Olivier, and a Grammy. But prestige alone doesn’t explain its endurance. Its narrative—a teenager spinning a lie into online virality—should read as bleak, yet the production offsets the gravity with humor. That balance leaned hard on Tom Dickerson’s Jared Kleinman, who kept the show buoyant as comic relief and chaos engine. “My happiness is based on whether the audience laughs,” he said at a press conference. By that measure, Manila delivered.

What makes the show resonate isn’t just the score or the accolades, but the mirror it holds up to its audience. Its portrayal of the weight of existence, the desire to disappear, and the fumbling attempts at connection in the age of social media are lived experiences for many.

Part of that connection is demographic. Sewell noted that Filipino theatergoers skew 10 to 12 years younger than their Western counterparts. With a youthful cast and storyline, the closeness in age makes the themes hit harder.

Rebecca McKinnis’ turn as Heidi Hansen drew some of the night’s loudest applause, while Kirk, as Evan, landed a standing ovation. His take on Evan embraced awkwardness without slipping into caricature, his vocals inevitably inviting comparisons to Ben Platt, the original Broadway Evan. Whether that proves a blessing or a burden is for the audience to decide.

Dear Evan Hansen runs until October 5 at The Theatre at Solaire, with tickets available
    via Ticketworld.com.ph.

  • New K-Fantasy ‘Genie, Make a Wish’ Trailer Blends Magic, Mischief, and Romance

New K-Fantasy ‘Genie, Make a Wish’ Trailer Blends Magic, Mischief, and Romance

The official trailer for “Genie, Make a Wish“, the highly-anticipated K-fantasy romantic comedy that stars Kim Woo-bin and Bae Suzy as a power couple, has been released by Netflix. The teaser blends contemporary psychological intrigue with aspects of ancient folklore. On October 3, the series will make its worldwide premiere.

In a thrilling romance that has the potential to end both of their worlds, it promises a deliciously sinister confrontation between a stoic master with psychopathic secrets and a thousand-year-old genie with devilish tendencies. “He’s not your average genie; he’s a truly evil one,” says the eerie voiceover of Genie (Kim Woo-bin), the main character, at the beginning of the trailer, which was released on Netflix. The scene alternates between Seoul’s neon-lit streets and Dubai’s lavish souks. As Genie entices her with forbidden fantasies and Ka-young coldly and precisely shoots down his plans, their relationship devolves into a game of wills and wits.

Three wishes that will permanently alter their lives bind them together in a deadly wager. “Genie, Make a Wish” is fundamentally about the thrilling conflict between chaos and control. Ka-young (Bae Suzy) has suppressed her darker impulses into a life of rigid routines and emotional numbness because she was raised by her strict grandmother. However, Genie awakens after a thousand years of sleep and brings a storm of magic, mischief, and possibly even love with him when she spontaneously travels to Dubai and retrieves the enchanted lamp.

The renowned Kim Eun-sook (“Goblin”, “The Glory”) wrote the script and Lee Byung-hun directed the 12-episode series.

There is no doubt that after October 3, spirits imprisoned in bottles and wish-granters will never be the same. “Genie, Make a Wish” will only be available for streaming on Netflix on October 3rd.

  • Han Sohee’s Little Garden of Sparkling Treasures: XOHEE LOVED ONES in Manila

Han Sohee’s Little Garden of Sparkling Treasures: XOHEE LOVED ONES in Manila

Hardwork, passion, dedication, and exceptional talent. That’s how South Korean actress Han Sohee worked her way to the top as a self-made woman in the entertainment industry, being recognized as a global star in this generation.

Han Sohee started her career playing supporting roles in various KDramas in 2017, until she got her breakthrough roles in 2019 KDrama “Abyss,” and her most famous character as Yeo Dakyung in 2020 phenomenal hit Korean series “The World of the Married.”

Han Sohee then began to garner her well-deserved recognition as she became the lead actress in two Netflix series: “Nevertheless” as Yoo Nabi and “Gyeongsong Creature” as Yoon Chaeok. This 2025, fans have been looking forward to see the unstoppable actress Han Sohee, who has proven her versatility and relentless energy and talent, as she will also be starring in massive projects such as the Korean remake of the 2015 American movie “The Intern,” reprising the role of Anne Hathaway, and playing the character of Cha Haein in Netflix’s live action adaptation of “Solo Leveling.” In addition, her first movie, “Project Y” had its premiere during the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 last September 10, 2025 playing the role of Miseon, and starring alongside South Korean actress Jeon Jongseo.

Celebrating her amazing achievements being in the industry for more than 7 years, Han Sohee took her precious time to meet her fans around the world through her fanmeeting tour, XOHEE LOVED ONES. 2025 Han Sohee 1st Fanmeeting World Tour <XOHEE LOVED ONES> in Manila, presented by LSquared Productions, was held at The Cove at Okada Manila. Filipino Sosamos filled the venue with their cheering banners and bright fanlights, eagerly waiting for their muse.

    Han Sohee

As soon as Han Sohee stepped out onstage, fans were blown away with her goddess-like beauty and charming personality. It was Han Sohee’s first fanmeet in Manila, however, she has gone in the country a few times for work. She explained the meaning behind the complete title of her tour “XOHEE LOVED ONES, You Are Sparkling Treasures To Me.” “Honestly, it is a return gift to my fans who gave me unconditional and endless love [and support] to me, so for me the fans are really treasures in my life that’s why I came up with this title.”

Filipino SOSAMO got to know more about their beloved Sohee through various segments of the show. During the first segment, XOHEE AWARDS, fans voted for a survey prior to the show, with which Sohee also picked her answers during the show. When asked which of her onscreen characters would she want to travel with, the fans answered Nabi of Nevertheless and Jiwoo of Your Name. However, Sohee picked Eunsu of Soundtrack #1 since she thinks this character has a bright personality and someone she could enjoy travelling with, contrary to her character Jiwoo who is quite dangerous. Meanwhile, she doesn’t want to travel with her character Chaeok from Gyeongseong Creature since she “is quite dangerous.” Fans were also asked which type of character would they want Sohee to play and they voted for either a psychopath or a doctor. Sohee also picked playing a psychopath in her future shows. “There are different kinds of emotions I can play and I personally think that I can do the charm of a psychopath well,” with Sohee posing a bit for the camera portraying a psychopath. Finally, Sohee was asked what her favorite Filipino traditional dish would be. Fans voted for adobo, but Sohee chose bulalo. “[I chose] bulalo because in Korea, it is similar with gomtang and I love it so much that’s why I chose it.” Sohee also shared that she loves rice so much, since the Philippines is a country that serves rice as a staple during meals.

As a creative and someone who loves art and to draw, Sohee got excited during the segment FANART FOR SOHEE, where fans submitted fanarts of Han Sohee and appreciated each of them by mimicking the poses drawn on fanarts. Sohee also played a few games with fans, from guessing games, to knowing the ultimate Sohee fan through a yes or no question, having the entire Cove crowd participate in this segment.

This fanmeet also never failed to showcase Sohee’s amazing creativity and jawdropping talent. Han Sohee premiered a VCR for the tour that she personally directed and produced, which perfectly encapsulated Sohee’s depth and love for her craft, the mini film giving the viewers pure cinema and ignited appreciation for Sohee’s creativity. Sohee also had the fans at the edge of their seats as she performed onstage covers of songs “Seoul City” by Jennie and “Whiplash” by æspa.

Han Sohee took the chance to engage and make her Filipino Sosamos’ wishes come true. Through the segment XOHEE’S MUST-DO LIST, fans were given the chance to write a few messages and requests for Sohee, which she picked onstage and grant for her fans. One of which is taking a selfie with a fan, wherein Sohee went down onstage to go to the chosen fan and make her wish come true. A fan who was celebrating her birthday also got to share a quick hug with Sohee. This being her first time in the country, Filipino Sosamos prepared a fan video message for Han Sohee, who eventually got emotional with the overwhelming love and support from her fans, who referred to themselves as Sohee’s “little garden of love.”

As her fanmeet came to an end, Sohee couldn’t hide her happiness, her heart full of love and appreciation for her fans. “Thank you for saying that I’m not alone. There were so many times that I have to overcome hardships, but the fans are there to fill me up. In the future, I’ll be there for you and protect you, my fans. Thank you for staying with me and for the loud cheers and energy. This will be an unforgettable day for me in my entire life.” Han Sohee promised to be back for her fans, and looking forward to meet them more often in the future. “We’re going meet again, right? ‘Til the next time we see each other again, be healthy and stay happy.”

  • Gab Cabangon marks debut as a solo artist with the indie guitar-pop track “Pieces”

Gab Cabangon marks debut as a solo artist with the indie guitar-pop track “Pieces”

The budding singer-songwriter releases a song that feels like a warm embrace in difficult times.

Filipino singer-songwriter Gab Cabangon steps into the spotlight with the release of “Pieces,” his first official single as a solo artist.

The acoustic indie pop track delivers an inspiring message for anyone going through the process of grief, uncertainty, and depression. Cabangon describes it as his “It’s Okay Not to Be Okay” song: an invitation for listeners to embrace vulnerability while holding on to the hope of healing and brighter days ahead.

“I want this song to be the soundtrack for people to allow themselves to go through the process of sadness and grief without feeling judged and without feeling alone,” Cabangon shares. “Part of the journey to fixing what may be broken is acknowledging the sadness and frustration that some things aren’t okay, but also knowing there will always be someone or something to help you stand up again.”

Originally penned as an anniversary gift to his then-girlfriend (now wife) during the pandemic, “Pieces” quickly evolved beyond a personal dedication. When Cabangon began performing it during livestreams and gigs, the song resonated deeply with audiences, often moving listeners to tears. The experience affirmed his decision to bring the song into the studio and share it with a wider audience.

“It also helps that I’m in a place right now where I could really invest in my music and do it at a certain level that I can be proud of,” Gab adds. “I also found friends and people who I wanted to collaborate with to bring my song to life both from a music standpoint and a visual standpoint. They helped me achieve the vision for the song, and they helped me be a better artist and collaborator during the process.”

The song is produced in collaboration with long-time friend and music director David Lina, who brought warmth and tender instrumental work to the arrangements, and mixed and mastered by Shadiel “Shad” Chan and Jan Fuertez, whose sonic touches complemented the poignant feel of the material. With lush acoustic textures and poignant storytelling, the song also reflects Cabangon’s vision of creating music that could easily belong to a film soundtrack.

“Pieces” marks a turning point in Cabangon’s career. After years of performing live (both solo and as the frontman of K.E.) and advocating for OPM, he admits that a shift in mindset allowed him to finally pursue recording as a solo artist.

Cabangon explains, “For the longest time, I was very hesitant to release new music as a solo artist. At first, I thought I would be content just being a gigging artist. But the hunger and desire to record and release new music never left me. So late last year, I made the conscious decision that I wanted to finally release music as ‘Gab Cabangon’.”

With “Pieces,” the budding artist offers a soundtrack to listeners’ life stories, exploring themes of love, healing, and resilience in a remarkably relatable way. As stated in his press statement, “Pieces” serves as an introduction to the themes that he will be writing as a recording artist.

“Not to give away too much, but I’d like to think that it’s the opening song to a letter that I’m writing for the people who are trying to learn to love again,” he adds. ‘People are definitely going to expect more music from me moving forward, and they’ll just have to keep on following my music journey to find out more.”

Gab Cabangon’s “Pieces” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide.

    About Gab Cabangon

As an introspective artist, Gab loves writing songs and stories about going through different phases of life and heartaches that are both romantic and non-romantic.

Today, Gab Cabangon debuts as a solo recording artist and continues to showcase his talents and share his songs and stories while championing Filipino music in every stage and space he performs. Apart from gracing intimate shows, he has performed abroad in small concerts and shows, particularly in the US and Australia. • The Juans crosses 10th anniversary with TAWID, an album that opens a universe to every feeling!

The Juans crosses 10th anniversary with TAWID, an album that opens a universe to every feeling!

Filipino pop-rock band The Juans has been a soundtrack of love, heartbreak and everything in between, since 2015. Composed of Carl Guevarra, Chael Adriano, Japs Mendoza and RJ Cruz, the band is celebrating its 10th anniversary with TAWID, a brand-new album that turns emotions into worlds to be explored, released last September 12, 2025.

TAWID invites listeners to cross from confusion to clarity, from hoping to healing, and from the weight of pain to something lighter.

“TAWID is a companion for anyone at the crossroads. It’s not about reaching the finish line, but about embracing the messy middle—the process of still crossing, still choosing, still feeling,” said Carl Guevarra, The Juans’ leader.

The Juans kicked off their anniversary events with TAWID LIVE: The Album Showcase at the SM North EDSA Skydome last August 29, where they treated the fans to an electrifying performance and first listen to the new tracks.

The album carries songs that mirror life’s highs, lows and in-betweens, including fan favorites Ngiti, Gusto Kita and Ako Na Lang, as well as new collaborations like Missed Call feat. Rhodessa and latest hit Ano Ba Talaga Tayo? feat. Janine Berdin.

The momentum carried on as the album officially dropped on Spotify, YouTube and digital streaming platforms last September 12. On the same day, the band launched their nationwide album tour at Glorietta, Makati, giving fans across the country a chance to experience the songs live.

From October to December 2025, The Juans will continue to bring TAWID closer to Juanistas nationwide with mall shows, live gigs and fan engagements.

With a decade of music behind them and a new era ahead, The Juans are ready to cross new borders—creatively and emotionally.

“We’ve always believed that there’s a The Juans song for every season you go through,” Carl added.

“TAWID is proof of that. Wherever you are in your journey, we hope this album feels like a friend walking with you.”

  • Relive the Bagets era: Meet the new Gilbert!

Relive the Bagets era: Meet the new Gilbert!

Noel Comia Jr. and Alamat’s Tomas Rodriguez revive the shy, mischievous heart of the ‘80s barkada

    Noel Comia Jr. as Gilbert
    Tomas Rodriguez as Gilbert

A new generation of stars is ready to bring fresh energy to the iconic Bagets barkada.

Bagets The Musical, the joint production of VIVA Communications Inc., The Philippine STAR and NEXT by Philstar Media Group, and Newport World Resorts, revives the friendships, mischief, and growing pains of high school life in a nostalgic return to the 1980s.

Get to know Noel Comia Jr. and Tomas Rodriguez as they step into the shoes of Gilbert, the geeky member of the group originally portrayed by Herbert Bautista.

Exploring Gilbert’s shy side with Noel Comia Jr.

What made the coming-of-age classic timeless was its relatability. That’s the spirit  Noel Comia Jr. is most excited to bring on stage.

“We all have that experience of liking someone but not being able to share how we feel,” he shares. “Gilbert is awkward, self-conscious, and still figuring himself out.”

Comia draws on his musical theater background to add such depth to the role. His notable credits include Buruguduystunstugudunstuy: Ang Parokya ni Edgar Musical, Pinocchio and The Secret Garden with Repertory Philippines, and Fun Home with Miss Lea Salonga.

“What the audience might not know about Gilbert is that he’s the life of the party,” he says. “I’m excited to show that side, especially the kulitan with the barkada, because I never experienced that in high school.”

It’s that energy and camaraderie he hopes the audience will feel throughout the show.

“To be part of such an iconic stage play is an honor,” he says. “I’ll do my best to pay tribute to the character with respect.”

Why Tomas Rodriguez feels right at home in Bagets The Musical

If Comia dives into Gilbert’s more reserved energy, Tomas Rodriguez leans into the character’s mischief.

Kada high school barkada mayroong Gilbert. ‘Yung tipong mahiyain pero laging game sa kalokohan,” he begins with a laugh. “Doon ako nakaka-relate, sa kapilyuhan niya.”

A member of the P-pop boy group Alamat, the artist is known for his free-spirited nature.

He began his career in Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) 737 and later appeared in films like For the Love: Anghel, Kurdapya, The Ship Show, and Expensive Candy.

“This is my first theater stint, so medyo kinakabahan pero excited,” he admits. “Malaking tulong ang opportunity na ’to to help me grow in the arts and in acting.”

Rodriguez even went as far as training his glutes for a scene in the musical — a quirky kind of dedication that makes his performance all the more worth looking forward to.

“We have dancing and singing workshops lined up for this,” he concludes.

Comia and Rodriguez portray Gilbert in his entirety. From playful antics to quiet reflection, every moment feels familiar yet fresh. It’s a performance that captures the magic of adolescence.

  • A Rock Voice Resounds: Eric Martin’s Unleashed & Unplugged in Manila

A Rock Voice Resounds: Eric Martin’s Unleashed & Unplugged in Manila

Eric Martin is no stranger to Manila.

As the front man of MR. BIG, he has stood before thousands in packed arenas, his voice riding on waves of heavy riffs and thunderous drums. On September 15, 2025, that same voice was heard again in the city, though this time within the walls of Café Shylō, a venue whose scale could not have been further from the arenas of old.

Presented by PULP Live World, the evening titled Unleashed & Unplugged was less about volume and spectacle and more about rediscovering what happens when rock anthems are stripped to their core.

What followed was not merely a concert but a conversation. With guitarist David Cotterill beside him, Martin opened with “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy” and “Take Cover”, songs that in their original form carried the bravado of an era. Here they were leaner, more exposed, yet no less insistent. By the time “Alive and Kickin’” rolled in, the crowd was firmly with him. Manila was also treated to something exceptional: “Back in Blue”, an unreleased song rarely, if ever, performed. It felt less like a bonus track and more like a reminder that artists of Martin’s stature still have secrets left to share.

The set unfolded with deliberate pacing. “Wild World and Fragile” offered quiet, reflective passages, followed by the emotional peak of “Just Take My Heart.” Later came “Shine”, “Superfantastic”, “Promise Her the Moon”, and “Voodoo Kiss.” Each song carried the weight of familiarity, yet the intimacy of the room reshaped them into something almost personal. When the night closed with “To Be With You”, Martin’s most enduring hit with MR. BIG, the audience had already transformed into a chorus, singing not as spectators but as participants in a memory renewed.

Throughout, Martin treated the performance with a craftsman’s rigor. He repeatedly signaled for adjustments to his guitar sound, unwilling to let the technical details slip. His focus was not diluted by the smaller scale of the room. If anything, it sharpened. He sang as though the stakes were no different than at Araneta Coliseum or Budokan. That refusal to compromise elevated the performance, giving weight to every lyric he delivered.

At one point he paused to reflect, the room falling quiet as he spoke. “I will be forever known as the singer of MR. BIG,” he told the crowd, a statement delivered without irony or hesitation. It was both a recognition of how history will remember him and an acceptance of the role he continues to play in keeping those songs alive. The audience responded not with silence but with applause, as though to confirm that the legacy he named was still very much present before them.

Later, he leaned forward with something closer to a promise. “Maybe we can return next year,” he said, and the line drew a cheer that filled the café. The remark seemed casual on its surface, yet for fans who had followed the band across decades, it carried weight. It suggested continuity, the possibility that what had unfolded that night was not a farewell but a prelude. In the span of a few sentences, Martin bridged past and future, anchoring himself as both a figure of memory and an artist still writing the next chapter.

For fans who have followed MR. BIG across decades, the show was more than nostalgia. It was proof that a song can endure beyond the arena, that its power does not fade when the amplifiers are dialed back. In Pasig, Eric Martin’s voice remained both familiar and vital, and the Filipino audience responded in kind, singing with a devotion that has long made this city one of rock music’s most loyal homes.

  • Gloc-9 And Abaddon’s “Bonethugs” Is Not Your Typical Love Song!

Gloc-9 And Abaddon’s “Bonethugs” Is Not Your Typical Love Song!

Kung kailangan mo siyang suyuin, this song is for you. Rap heavyweight Gloc-9 teams up with lyrical beast Abaddon to drop “Bonethugs.” It’s the perfect anthem for couples who often find themselves in the midst of lovers’ quarrels.

This isn’t your typical love song; it’s real talk for real relationships served with that signature Pinoy hip-hop flavor. Gloc-9 and Abaddon spit truth about the relationship grind – the misunderstandings, the short tempers, the apologies that come after. It’s not always good times in a relationship, there are bumps, mistakes, misunderstandings, but at then and of the day your partner is your support and your teammate. As mentioned in the track: “Bakit hindi mo muna ako pakinggan (pwede bang ikaw muna ay makinig). Hindi yung agad-agad mo ‘kong pahihirapan (‘di ba tayo lang ang magkakampi)”

Straight off Gloc-9’s relentless monthly drop schedule, “Bonethugs” hits different with its “real talk,” tackling what it really takes to make love last. The track has bars that cut deep and make you reflect: “Kahit ang sahod ay sa akinse pa, kung may’rong babayaran, ako na’ng bahala, sagot kita. Tanging hiling ko lang ay lambing sa pag-sususumamo ko. Ako’y kakampi mo, pinapangako ko.”

Sometimes we fight hard, but we need to love harder. “Bonethugs” is out now on all major streaming platforms.

    BONETHUGS
    by Gloc-9 featuring Abaddon

    Intro
    Abaddon, Gloc-9

    Ano tatapusin o aayusin ba?
Ako ay papasukin, pag-usapan ng mabuti yan

    Abaddon Verse
    Hey, ano ang me’ron?
    Yow after inspection at sermon
balik ulit sa malamig na semento
Pasensiya ka na kung ‘di ako perpekto

    laging mali, laging lasing, laging
Pa easy-easy lang at walang dating sa’yo
Salamat at nagawa mo ‘kong tanggapin

    Ano tatapusin o aayusin ba?
Ako ay papasukin, pag-usapan ng mabuti yan

    Gloc-9 Verse

Malayo man ako’y lumalapit, tumatawid sa isang kalabit

Kahit itanong kay Krayzie, Layzie, Bizzy, Wish and Flesh

    Chorus
    Ano tatapusin o aayusin ba?
Ako ay papasukin, pag-usapan ng mabuti yan

    Outro
baka kasi galit ka lang ngayon
Magtanong muna kaya tayo kay Abaddon
O kaya kay Gloc-9, kapag online
Sige ibalik natin ng one more time

Kahit itanong kay Krayzie, Layzie, Bizzy, Wish and Flesh
