  • Youngjae, A Beautiful Person Inside Out

Youngjae, A Beautiful Person Inside Out

All-out love for Youngjae as Ahgases welcomed him back to the country with their warmest affection and loudest cheers!

Youngjae returned to the Philippine concert stage on February 24 for his Inside Out Tour at the New Frontier Theater. This marks his second solo event here, the previous one happened two years ago. Known as the main vocalist of GOT7, the 27-year-old singer showcased not only his many talents but also his unwavering sincerity toward his fans.

    Youngjae

The concert, which lasted for 2.5 hours, was a joy from start to finish. The setlist featured Youngjae’s personality inside out, so to speak. Starting with the grooves of “Vibin’” followed by the enticing “SUGAR” and the cheeky “Deal”, he flexed his smooth moves early on. His vocal prowess shone through his sweeter and slower songs like “Dreaming Again” and “Thinking of You”. He had the crowd hooked with the LSS-inducing “Do It,” his latest single.

Youngjae admitted he wasn’t feeling 100% that day. It seems he was going through a coughing spell which affected his singing, throwing off his focus at some parts of the show. Still, he tried his best to give more than 100% to his fans by powering through his performances and more importantly by openly communicating with them. He mostly spoke in Korean with a translator interpreting his words to the audience. In between songs, he would talk about tidbits of trivia for his songs: how “Lonely” is a song that best reflects his inner self and how he sets up many alarms just to get himself to wake up in the morning about “Snooze”.

It is a well-known fact that Youngjae is a huge fan of Bruno Mars, and he took the chance to highlight that while he was here. As a special gift for his Filipino fans, he performed a rendition of “When I Was Your Man”, citing Bruno’s deep connection to our country as the reason. He even promised to upload his cover of the song on YouTube soon.

In the middle of the show, he revealed that he has two sides: Artist Youngjae and Player Youngjae. Artist Youngjae is his serious, perfectionist side. Since 2016, he has been composing songs under the name Ars, lending a hand to some of GOT7’s discography. As a solo artist, he took on this endeavor unrelentingly as he took command of the songwriting for most of his tracks. On the other hand, Player Youngjae is more of a relaxed goofball, the kind that chooses to take things slowly. Conflicting as they might be, he said he needed both sides to make music. “Music is my safe place,” he explained.

“I want to work as a musician until I become an old man. I want more people to remember my music.”

    YOUNGJAE

Filipino Ahgases, of course, showered Youngjae with their heartfelt fan projects. Before the concert, they set up ‘Tindahan ni Youngjae’, a snack bar set up in the same fashion as a sari-sari store. Youngjae was so fond of it, he posted it in his Instagram stories. Another one was the banner project featuring Youngjae’s beloved pet, Coco. Holding up the banner, he was moved to tears because of his fans’ efforts and also because he missed his dog. Last but not least, Ahgases made a surprise video tribute featuring Youngjae’s moments from his debut up to his solo career.

Towards the end of his concert, he also performed a medley of GOT7 songs including “Hard Carry”, “Lullaby” and “Girls Girls Girls” which got Ahgases on their feet.

Overwhelmed by the love of his fans, Youngjae thanked the crowd again and again. He said that although he wasn’t feeling well, he was able to perform well because of their support. In the near future, he promised to show an improved version of himself as he works on new music.

The bonuses kept piling up even at the end as Youngjae asked the crowd which song they wanted to see him perform again. As fans would have it, they wouldn’t want him to leave so easily. Ever obliging, he ended up performing three additional repeat songs with full choreography for the encore. Truly, Youngjae is a beautiful person inside and out.

  • SB19’s Justin debuts solo project with the release of first single “surreal”

SB19’s Justin debuts solo project with the release of first single “surreal”

The P-Pop star also features Radkidz’s PABLO and Josue on production and Gelou of Pinoy girl group YARA on harmonies and backing vocals!

SB19’s Justin marks his official debut as a solo recording artist with the release of his new single “surreal,” out on February 29, 2024, via Sony Music Entertainment.

Written two years ago, the laidback track reflects the beauty of meaningful coincidences and dreams and how the impossible becomes a reality when a huge shift takes place, thanks to the perfect mix of timing, perseverance, and hard work.

For his part, the P-Pop star penned the lyrics with the tactile vulnerability of someone conveying his thoughts and projections straight to the listeners. Justin explains, “It’s all these scenarios that are unlikely to happen in the real world, but you find them as an escape from reality, so you continue to dream and dream… And surprisingly, you found someone who enjoys imagination as much as you do.”

“surreal” serves as a collaboration with Radkidz’s PABLO and Josue, with both producers adding dynamism to Justin’s compelling brand of introspection. The duo is instrumental in ensuring that Justin’s vision is carefully brought to life with subtlety and warmth while capturing the most exciting place the production can go.

“At first, when I wrote the lyrics with an initial melody, I thought they’d just tweak it,” shares Justin. “But the beautiful track they did, rich in harmonies and embellishment, sounds so fresh and new to my ears that I somehow forgot I wrote it in the first place. Both of them really enhanced my demo with a song that exceeded my expectations.”

The summery but easygoing song also features Gelou of Filipino girl group YARA on the bridge and the last chorus part. A friend and colleague of Justin, Gelou injected more flavor and depth into the material with her additional vocals.

    Justin

“surreal” will also be released with a music video conceptualized and directed by Justin himself, along with his college batchmate and now-Creative Manager of 1Z, Xi-Anne Avanceña. As a Filipino visionary artist at the crossroads of various creative disciplines, Justin sets his heart on sharing his artistic vision with the song he can rightfully claim as his own, while also being open to the ideas and strengths of his trusted collaborators.

Justin adds, “surreal’s MV is a collaboration with the most creative team I know. Joining us are Alan Ante and Stephanie Joy Cea as directors of photography for this project. They were very fun and nice to work with. They understand what the song is trying to say.”

When asked about the reason for releasing “surreal” and debuting his solo project, Justin explains that he was scared to do things alone at first, but because of the support of the people around him, the SB19 member finally found the courage to put his work where it’s most needed.

Justin’s “surreal” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

  • 5 Reasons Why Shōgun is a Must-Watch

    5 Reasons Why Shōgun is a Must-Watch

From the epic saga of power to the breathtaking production and costume design mirroring Feudal Japan to the commanding portrayal of the cast, Shōgun is your new weekly viewing habit, now available on Disney+.

No more rotting in your bed, spending your night’s doom scrolling. Shōgun, now available on Disney+, is one of the biggest and most anticipated shows of 2024. Ready your popcorn and make TV night an event worthy of lengthy and admittedly nerdy conversations with friends once more.

An engrossing historical drama, based on a best-selling novel with underlying themes of greed, loyalty, treachery, power, and passion –– satisfying every viewer’s appetite. Shōgun is produced by FX, the same studio that carries critically acclaimed shows such as The Bear, What We Do in the Shadows, American Horror Story, and Fargo.

Here are five reasons why it deserves to be part of your must-watch list:

    Shōgun

    The plot and the twists

Shōgun is big, bloody, and beautiful. While it is rooted in the real history of the period, the show follows fictional feudal lords as they each work their way to acquire more power and control. You will find yourself rooting for characters while suspecting others of their real motives. Cunning characters, their shady background, and twisted views will keep you on your toes as you immerse yourself into the worlds of a great Japanese military ruler, a Japanese noblewoman, and a Dutch pilot, all with their agendas.

The miniseries is a classic story about the fight for power and control but what the show does is depict Japanese culture in a way that’s never seen before on a show of this scale.
Is Shōgun worthy to stand among the favorites that ultimately changed the way we watch series? We will soon find out, but Shōgun does not disappoint for sure. Shōgun explores the political, cultural, and religious state of Feudal Japan as it collides and falls into chaos.

    Shōgun

    The source material

Shōgun is based on James Clavell’s renowned book, selling more than 15 million copies. It is set in 1600 Japan at the dawn of the Japanese civil war. And if you’re thinking you’ve seen a show like this before, it’s probably because it had previously graced TV–in 1980. The show was a hit and is considered one of the most successful miniseries produced by its home network.

Why recreate something already great then? In the case of Shōgun, the reason is multi-faceted. To honor the book’s fans and the author’s dedication to accurate details, telling the story from a more Japanese-centered lens, and to reflect the political climate of the time, and relating it to today’s landscape are just some of the driving forces behind the move. And if that’s not enough reason for you, even the author’s daughter, Michaela Clavell, who has been managing James Clavell’s publishing rights since 1981, approved of the show’s magnificent portrayal, which she expressed during the press conference. She serves as an executive producer for the show.

    Shōgun

Japanese veteran actor and martial artist Hiroyuki Sanada leads the cast

Yes, the show’s lead does look familiar. Yes, you’ve seen him wield a katana many times before. And most recently, you’ve seen him in big Hollywood films alongside Keanu Reeves in John Wick and Brad Pitt in Bullet Train. But before all of that, he was also in Sigaw Ng Puso, a 1995 Filipino film with Lorna Tolentino and Sharmaine Arnaiz! Sanada is, indeed, no stranger to extravagant productions and heavy and dramatic storytelling. His decades-long career and expertise in the world of the samurai (he’s a martial artist, too!), made him a perfect fit as the show’s producer.

Other members of the stellar cast include actress Anna Sawai, who plays Lady Toda Mariko, and recently appeared in the Emmy-nominated limited series Pachinko. Cosmo Jarvis, known for his 2022 performance in Persuasion, stars as John Blackthorne. Acclaimed Japanese cast members include Tadanobu Asano (Welcome Home, Monet), Hiroto Kanai (Tuna Girl), Takehiro Hira (The Swarm), and Moeka Hoshi (Dependence).

The top-tier costumes and production design

No Japanese historical drama is complete without the iconic samurai armor, kimono, and katana. Soon, you’ll be wielding your Japanese sword and designing your costumes based on your favorite characters. The show exerted clear-cut direction to bring every aspect of the show, including gestures and etiquette per societal class, to accurately portray 1600 Japan. Shōgun employed several Japanese experts to serve as consultants for the show, including three masters of gestures. The group of advisors ensured that movement and behavior among the different classes of the Japanese characters were accurate to the period.

Travel back in time and live in Japan’s history-defining era. Centuries-old castles, fishing villages, traditional home interiors, and the 1600 Japanese landscape, including vegetation come alive as the show deploys an undefeated commitment to preserving the show’s accuracy to the most minute details.

    The big-gun directors

For a show of this scale, you need visionaries willing to spend years to make this show a reality. Shōgun employed the minds behind some of the most beautiful and captivating stories of recent times.

You may know Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed 4 episodes of Shōgun, for helming Watchmen in 2019 and The Terminal List in 2022. Thriller series director Jonathan van Tulleken directed 2 episodes of Shōgun, bringing with him his recent work with the post-apocalyptic dystopian thriller Snowpiercer in 2020. Japanese director Takeshi Fukunaga is no stranger to bringing Japanese stories to the screen with his recent work, Ainu Mosir. Hiromi Kamata also joins the list of top-gun directors, notable for his work in Selena: The Series.

These visionaries together make Shōgun a cinematic masterpiece you cannot miss. Stream Shōgun only on Disney+

Enter the world of Shōgun, poised to be the biggest show of 2024. The first two episodes of Shōgun are now available on Disney+ and will have a new episode weekly thereafter. Immerse yourself in the intricate world of the shōgunate, samurai, and intense Japanese politics. Follow Disney+ PH on Facebook and Instagram @DisneyPlusPH to know the latest updates about Shōgun and join the conversation using #Shōgun and #DisneyPlusPH.

  • The Cast of City Hunter and Their Onscreen Personas

The Cast of City Hunter and Their Onscreen Personas

The eagerly awaited Japanese live-action adaptation of “City Hunter,” the legendary manga that captivated Japan and sold over 50 million copies, will premiere on April 25. City Hunter follows Ryo Saeba (Ryohei Suzuki), a premier “sweeper” who navigates the shadowy depths of modern-day Shinjuku, Tokyo. Balancing a cool demeanor with a fun personality, Ryo takes on high-stakes challenges in the underworld. Misato Morita steps into the role of the heroine, Kaori Makimura, in this action-packed adventure.

In an exciting development, additional cast members have been announced for the characters of Hideyuki Makimura and Saeko Nogami, portrayed by Masanobu Ando and Fumino Kimura respectively. The character art of their on-screen personas has also been released, complementing the character art earlier revealed for Ryo and Kaori.

Masanobu Ando plays Hideyuki Makimura, Kaori Makimura’s older brother and Ryo’s close friend and “sweeper” partner. Once a skilled detective, he’s now retired due to an incident. However, he continues to use his abilities to support Ryo. Reflecting on his pivotal role, Ando says, “I felt immense pressure to do justice to the character, considering its popularity in the original manga and animation. I hope both existing fans of City Hunter and newcomers alike will enjoy the film.”

Fumino Kimura plays Saeko Nogami, a detective from the Metropolitan Police Department who has a mysterious relationship with Ryo. Saeko and Hideyuki used to work together, and because of this relationship, she and Ryo still exchange information about the underworld. Her beauty, allure, and entertaining banter with Ryo have made her a fan-favorite in the original series. “The role of Saeko was a daunting offer, and I couldn’t imagine myself playing it,” Kimura admitted. “However, having the support and guidance of Ryohei Suzuki, our leading man and a fan of the original work, was incredibly reassuring. I’m confident that both longtime fans and new audiences are in for a treat with this film.”

Mark your calendars for City Hunter, streaming April 25, exclusively on Netflix.

  • GAYLE (My First Time) in Asia 2024 Tour is coming to Manila this May 29!

GAYLE (My First Time) in Asia 2024 Tour is coming to Manila this May 29!

    GAYLE Live in Manila 2024

American singer-songwriter GAYLE famed for the electrifying smash single “abcdefu” will be coming to Manila for the first time on May 29 at The Podium Hall. Tickets go on-sale on February 24 at 12PM via SMTickets.com and SM Tickets outlets. Presented by Eventim Live Asia and Wilbros Live.

    About GAYLE:

On her incendiary debut EP, a study of the human experience volume one, 19-year-old singer/songwriter GAYLE shared a batch of songs capturing the most specific and vividly real emotions: the tension between longing for connection and fearing vulnerability, the risk and thrill of refusing to compromise your own needs.

Released in early 2022, the six-track project features “abcdefu”: a double-platinum anthem that held the #1 spot on Top 40 radio for three consecutive weeks, topped the Billboard Global 200 for nine consecutive weeks, hit the top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and propelled the Nashville-based artist to such milestones as earning her first-ever GRAMMY Award nomination in the prestigious “Song of the Year” category, being named as a Billboard Music Awards finalist, and earn such honors as American Music Award and People’s Choice Award nominations in “New Artist of the Year,” 2 MTV VMA nominations, a Kid’s Choice Award nomination, and an NSAI Award in their “10 Songs I Wish I’d Written” list.

Amid navigating that whirlwind success, GAYLE headed back into the studio to create a study of the human experience volume two—a powerful new EP that doubles down on its predecessor’s unapologetic truth-telling, revealing even more of her inner world and cementing her status as a singular and immediately fascinating songwriter.

Her massively successful major-label debut, “abcdefu” has now amassed over two billion streams, while she has appeared on major TV shows like “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and earned such accolades as appearing on Billboard’s “21 Under 21” list and on Variety’s “Power of Young Hollywood Impact Report” for 2022, as well as being named a YouTube Artist On The Rise and an MTV Global Push Artist.

With tours supporting Taylor Swift and P!nk, and a live show resume that includes touring with Tate McRae and AJR, and playing a run of shows with pop-punk legends My Chemical Romance, GAYLE aims for what she refers to as “messy imperfection” in all of her live shows.

“I truly believe that music is a unifying force, and I want to give people the space to be completely themselves and to see that there are other people in the world who feel the same way they do,” she says. And as she’s witnessed repeatedly in the past year, there’s a certain undeniable power in fully owning and accepting your truth. “My songs tend to come from being uncomfortable with what I’m feeling and not wanting to focus on it, but then getting to the point where I just need to get it all out,” she says. “If my music can help other people to make better sense of themselves, to come to terms with who they are and what they’re feeling, then that means the world to me.”

  • Celebrated Broadway Actress Lea Salonga to Join The Tabernacle Choir on Tour of “Hope” to the Philippines

Celebrated Broadway Actress Lea Salonga to Join The Tabernacle Choir on Tour of “Hope” to the Philippines

Acclaimed Broadway singer and actress Lea Salonga will be the featured guest artist on the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square’s tour to the Philippines. This is the second stop on the Choir’s world tour of “Hope” and the first visit by the Choir to the Philippines.

Lea Salonga is a multiple award-winning actor and singer renowned across the world for her powerful voice and perfect pitch. She is best known for her Tony Award–winning role in Miss Saigon. In addition to the Tony, she has won the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World Awards in the field of musical theatre.

Given the positive experience she had when she joined The Tabernacle Choir for the first time, Lea Salonga stated in a media conference that was held at the Conrad Hotel in Pasay City that it was an easy decision for her to say yes to joining the choir for a second time.

“It was memorable not only from a musical standpoint, but I just remembered feeling, ‘this is something I’ll never, ever forget,” Lea said.

On February 27 and 28, at 8 p.m., the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila will host the free event.

In addition to Lea, another Filipina singer-songwriter named Ysabelle Cuevas will be performing alongside the choir.

Many fans of all ages recognize Lea as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan for Mulan and Mulan II. Lea served as a judge on the Philippines hit version of “The Voice,” including the ratings juggernaut “The Voice Kids.” An avid techie and gamer, Lea divides her time between Manila, Philippines, with her family and the United States.

Under the direction of Mack Wilberg, music director of the Choir, and Ryan Murphy, associate music director, the “Hope” concerts will be held February 20–29 and feature Salonga and the Choir performing a repertoire that reflects, in part, the musicality of the country. Filipinos are a nation of singing people whose choral tradition started centuries ago with indigenous origins and has continued until today. Internationally, the Philippines has one of the highest viewerships of Music & the Spoken Word.

Wilberg said he looking forward to working with her again. “It was a delight to have Lea Salonga share her extraordinary talents at our Christmas concert last year in Salt Lake City. It is an honor for the Choir to go to Lea’s home country to perform with her again and experience the kindness of the Filippino people,” he said.

In addition to Lea as a guest artist, Ysabelle Cuevas, a celebrated singer-songwriter from the Philippines will also be joining the Choir in their performances. In 2018, Ysabelle’s original song “Daunted,” released through Warner Music Philippines, marked a significant milestone in her career, resonating with fans across East Asia and North America. Her passion for cultural connections extends beyond her original work. Ysabelle has gained worldwide acclaim for her covers, winning music contests and earning features in major publications. Her adept translations of Korean songs into Filipino and English demonstrate her unique ability to merge diverse musical traditions and appeal to a global audience.

Finally, the Choir will also be joined by husband and wife duo, Paolo Abrera and Suzie Entrata-Abrera who will act as narrators during the performances. Suzie and Paolo are both tv personalities and news anchors who are well known in the Philippines.

Over the next four years, the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra will travel twice a year to different parts of the world. Choir president Michael O. Leavitt said, “Our goal is to magnify the Choir’s impact throughout the world by helping people feel God’s love for His children. Our performances will be free. Many will be live streamed so local congregations in the regions we visit can invite their friends and communities to participate.”

  • Gordon Cormier and Dallas Liu Make Landmark Arrival in Manila for the Epic ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Event

Gordon Cormier and Dallas Liu Make Landmark Arrival in Manila for the Epic ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Event

The lead stars join regional press, content creators, and Filipino fans for the premiere of Netflix’s latest live-action series.

Gordon Cormier and Dallas Liu, the young actors from the highly-anticipated AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER series, landed in Manila for the press conference and premiere of the live-action adaptation. The duo received a warm Manila welcome as they spent a jam-packed day of activities with regional press and influencers from the country, as well as other delegates from the APAC region, to promote Netflix’s latest live-action offering.

During the press conference held at Marquis Events Place in BGC, Filipino-Canadian star Gordon had three words to describe the life-changing moment when he discovered that he booked the iconic role: ‘Tears. Crying. Happiness.’ Gordon, who plays Aang, expressed that he felt like he “grew” with his character and noted how easy it was for him to portray the more “happy” side of the young Avatar: “When we first shot the series, I was 11 years old, so I feel like I’ve grown up quite a bit. The happy side of Aang is quite easy for me because… you know. I think you could tell,” he added with a laugh, referring to his innate happy demeanor. “It was more difficult for me to tap into Aang’s emotional side.”

Speaking about their experiences in breathing new life into the adored characters, Dallas, who plays Prince Zuko, shared, “I really had to tap into the negativity of Prince Zuko and what he’s going through. There are different points in my life that I have to pull from specifically that I think worked well for specific scenes.” Dallas also mentioned that each cast member was able to “ground” their characters and bring them to life in a way that feels familiar: “I’m really excited for you guys to see it. I know you guys are stoked for it,” he added, alluding to the extensive fight scenes within the series.

Admitting that they bonded and got close while shooting the show, Dallas, the older of the two breakout stars, closes the press conference with advice and a wish for Gordon: “To have a strong base in your heart is extremely important. I hope the people supporting you at home keep your chin up and give you strong words of affirmation and continue to champion you through your journey.”

The press conference ended with a surprise reveal of a fun, special “Appa Air” promotional video of Melai Cantiveros that both the audience and the actors enjoyed.

Following the press conference, the duo headed to Central Square to check out the AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER activity zones at the cinema area, and made a surprise appearance during the fan screening to the delight of the lucky fans.
