  • Finally, Arctic Monkeys Live in Manila!

Finally, Arctic Monkeys Live in Manila!

The English rock band Arctic Monkeys finally made their phenomenal debut in the Philippine concert scene as they performed at the Filinvest Events Grounds in Alabang on March 6. Filipino fans had been dreaming of a Manila stop for more than a decade, and now that their wish had been granted, they did not fail to turn up and party like it wasnโ€™t Monday evening.

That day, the 2014 Tumblr indie aesthetic was suddenly everywhere. We saw droves of thousands of millennials and Gen Zs, clad in their chic indie sleazecore attire โ€“ black shirts, leather jackets, fishnets, combat boots and smudged eyeliners.

Composed of Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Matt Helders and Nick Malley, Arctic Monkeys played each song with surreal precision. At around 8:30 PM, they made their entrance with the darkly foreboding crawl of โ€œSculptures of Anything Goesโ€. This heavy mood was immediately flipped when โ€œBrianstormโ€, โ€œSnap Out of Itโ€ and โ€œCrying Lightningโ€ burst into the air.

Interestingly, the twenty-one song setlist was a well-blended amalgamation of Arctic Monkeysโ€™ discography. Itโ€™s a known fact that thereโ€™s this contrasting difference between their older songs in the early 2010s and their recent releases. From the raunchy, tremulous punk/garage rock that defined their first five albums, their new music has progressed to a slower and more refined jazz-infused lounge sound. Their setlist presented this divergence profoundly.  One minute, we were grooving silently to โ€œFour Out of Fiveโ€, the next we were jumping and screaming the words to โ€œArabellaโ€. It was this kind of turbulent energy that sustained their concert, quite unlike any other weโ€™ve seen, to be frank.

Frontman Alex Turner was not one for chitchat. The most I could remember from the evening, save for the occasional โ€œthank youโ€, was when he said โ€œArabella in Manilaโ€ before actually playing the song. In his signature chic look โ€“ sunglasses, coat, little neck scarf โ€“ he had this mesmerizing persona onstage as he stared down the crowd, lifted the mic stand and sang the songs in his impeccable Sheffield accent.

Their seven albums were also represented in their setlist: โ€œDonโ€™t Sit Down โ€˜Cause Iโ€™ve Moved Your Chairโ€ from Suck It and See, โ€œTeddy Pickerโ€ and โ€œDo Me a Favourโ€ from Favourite Worst Nightmare, โ€œPretty Visitorsโ€ and โ€œCornerstoneโ€ from Humbug, โ€œFrom the Ritz to the Rubbleโ€ from Whatever People Say I Am, Thatโ€™s What Iโ€™m Not, โ€œTranquility Base Hotel & Casinoโ€ from their 2018 album, โ€œBody Paintโ€ from The Car. Some undeniable crowd favorites were โ€œI Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloorโ€ โ€œDo I Wanna Know?โ€ and  โ€œWhyโ€™d You Only Call Me When You’re High?โ€.

The encore gave a satisfying finish to a marvelous show. When the light finally illuminated the mysterious mirrorball hanging on top of the stage, we knew it was time for that song. It was an enthralling experience to hear the languid wistfulness of โ€œThereโ€™d Better Be a Mirrorballโ€ as the broken mirror lights seemed to dance all over the stage. This was followed by a snazzy rearranged version of โ€œ505โ€, reminiscent of the vibe of The Car. For the real finale, the audience sang word-for-word to the anthemic โ€œR U Mine?โ€.

Finally seeing Arctic Monkeys live was everything I expected. At some point while listening to them play live, I had a moment when I thought they sounded exactly like they did in their records โ€“ from the vocals to the beats โ€“ which is something I find fascinating. Even their stoicism seemed like something cut out of their photos which I only used to see in Tumblr reblogs back in the days. The show was a dream come true, a concert bucket list item crossed out. Canโ€™t quite snap out of it, really.

This is Home: Stray Kids Reunite with PH STAYs in MANIAC Tour in Manila

Stray Kids came back with a show like no other for their Philippine STAYs.

Almost four years after their first concert in the Philippines, South Korean boy group Stray Kids made their way back to the Philippine concert stage and brought their second world tour, MANIAC, to the SM Mall of Asia Arena with back-to-back concerts for their Philippine STAYs.

Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N kicked off the Manila leg of their world tour on March 11 with a three-hour show that saw them perform songs from their recent releases and their greatest hits from their earlier albums.

Before the show even began, Filipino STAYs filled the arena with enthusiasm and fervor as they sang along to the tracks and held up their lightsticks in support of their favorite boy band.

With Stray Kids strikingly charismatic in red, the highly anticipated concert officially began with “MANIAC”, “Venom”, and “Red Lights” from their million-selling albums Oddinary and Noeasy. In addition to the outstanding performances by the boy group, the MANIAC Tour concert featured a one-of-a-kind concert spectacle that included incredible stage designs, unusual props, mesmerizing lights, and a live band.

Leader Bang Chan then took the lead in greeting their Filipino fans after a long time following their first meeting in 2019. “You guys are very, very good at cheering today,” he commented as the crowd goes loud for the boy group. After a group greeting, the members individually said hello and introduced themselves in Filipino.

Following the high-energy start and now clad in a black-and-white ensemble, Stray Kids kept the momentum alive with “Easy” and “ALL IN”. Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N then brought everyone at the MOA Arena back to 2018 with “District 9”, the title track of their debut extended play I Am Not.

With performances of songs from not just their most recent albums but also from earlier onesโ€”songs that epitomized the boys’ remarkable artistry from the time they were rookiesโ€”the MANIAC Tour served as a tribute to the members’ artistic development. With their last concert in the Philippines dating back to 2019,ย the concert was a moment unlike any other, a nostalgic and proud feeling to have witnessed them in their first year since their debut to the million-seller and sold-out acts that they have become today.ย

The concert witnessed live stages of “Back Door”, “Charmer”, “Lonely St.”, “Side Effects”, “Thunderous”, “Domino”, “God’s Menu”, “Cheese”, “Yayaya”, and “Rock” before Stray Kids divided themselves into units with Bang Chan, Lee Know, Seungmin, and I.N performing “Waiting for Us”, while Changbin, Hyunjin, and Felix took on the stage with “Muddy Water”. During the interval before the unit stages, the boys had fun with STAYs and gifted them with spontaneous freestyle dance (Hyunjin), a cover of Dua Lipa’s “Love Again” (Felix), and Sam Fischer’s “This City” (Lee Know), and an acoustic version of NewJeans’ “OMG” (Seungmin).

“Case 143” got the MOA Arena echoing with love confessions for Stray Kids as STAYs scream “I love you” to the boy group. The boy group then ended the set prior to the encore with a jaw-dropping parade of performances of “Hellavator”, “Top”, and “Victory Song”.

While Stray Kids prepare for the encore stages, STAYs took the spotlight and gamely said yes to the missions prepared by the boysโ€”talented idols and talented fans (of all ages) united! Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N returned for the encore stages of “Fam”, “Miroh”, “Star Lost”, and “Haven”.

“Whenever we do a concert with STAYs, it’s not just us that’s doing the concert, but I feel like we’re doing it together because we sing together, dance together. We share love together,” Bang Chan remarked. Han, who had to sit down during the concert due to health reasons, received loud cheers from the fans, reassuring him of their understanding. Still, despite the limitations, he delivered nothing short of his best with an impressive display of his rap and vocals and a dominating stage presence that radiated throughout the show. In addition, the members made sure Han never felt left out, going their way to come to him.

“I know you guys really hate to hear this wordโ€”I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry about that. I know you guys are really worried about my condition issues and healthcare, but guys, to be honest, I really feel okay, I really feel great. Doing this show and your energy make my condition better. I feel great now,” Han said. He also urged the fans not to cry and assured them that he is really okay.

“The last time we came here was very beautiful. I can see why the people are so lovely, very loving, and very cheerful in a way. And seeing that, I feel like you guys really did cheer us up a lot. I felt that a lot today.”

    FELIX

MANIAC Tour in Manila was an auditory and visual display, a touching reunion, and teamwork that resulted in a successful event that would be talked about for days, months, and years to come. It was produced with astounding showmanship that demonstrated a concert unlike any other.

The concert ended with an energy that never wavers and a stronger promise to stay because STAYs make Stray Kids stayโ€”and this is home.

  • Ebe Dancel to stage repeat of โ€œSa Wakas: 20th Anniversaryโ€ Concert

Ebe Dancel to stage repeat of โ€œSa Wakas: 20th Anniversaryโ€ Concert

The award-winning singer-songwriter Ebe Dancel will be joined by ex-Sugarfree drummer Mitch Singson to honor the albumโ€™s lasting impact on the Philippine music scene!

Due to insistent public demand, Filipino singer-songwriter Ebe Dancel stages a repeat of Sa Wakas: 20th Anniversary Celebration, happening on March 31, 2023 (Friday), from 6 p.m. onwards at 123 Block, Mandala Park.

Celebrating the enduring legacy of Sugarfreeโ€™s iconic debut album, Sa Wakas The Repeat: 20th Anniversary Celebration will feature a longer, full-length set by Ebe Dancel and drummer Mitch Singson, as well as guest performances and surprises.

Presented by GNN Entertainment Productions and Backspacer Records, in partnership with 123 Block and Balcony Entertainment, the headline show will accommodate more people in the venue as requested by fans who were not able to attend the first one, which sold out in less than a day.

Part of the earnings will be donated to Parokya Ni Edgar guitarist Gab Chee Keeโ€™s hospital and medical expenses. Sa Wakas: official merch is also available via Backspacer Records’ official website, and will also be sold at the venue.

Sugarfree’s Sa Wakas, which came out in 2003, took confessional songwriting to a new level with anthems that reveal stories and experiences that are too embarrassingly painful to talk about in public. Critically acclaimed when it first came out in the early 2000s, the influential album eventually inspired a huge following and prompted a fan to write/produce an award-winning rock musical centered on its narrative.

Tickets to Sa Wakas The Repeat: 20th Anniversary Celebration are available for purchase starting March 13 (Monday) at 6 p.m. via bit.ly/sawakas20.

    Ticket Packages Available:

    • Regular Admissions (P1,500) – entrance to the event grounds

โ€œWeโ€™re coming out stronger this year with a more diverse lineup and activities,โ€ says Zarkโ€™s Burgers CEO Zark Varona. โ€œMake sure to pack your sunscreen as Zarkโ€™s Fest brings a festive experience in the best possible way. Weโ€™re scaling up our game with headline-worthy music representing various genres and demos, and weโ€™re also holding the event in a bigger, outdoor venue that allows people to move freely around the site and celebrate food, arts, and crafts with their family and friends. What we have is something game-changing and special, and I hope more people will get to experience that.โ€

This yearโ€™s edition ups the ante of the festival format by doubling down on the experience with fair-themed booths and a more family-friendly vibe. โ€œOur goal is to create a safe space where everyone is welcomed and included,โ€ Varona explains. โ€œHopefully with Zarkโ€™s Fest, weโ€™ll be able to deliver a music-filled destination for people from all walks of life.โ€

pH-1 announces Manila leg of โ€˜About Damn Timeโ€™ Asia tour

K-Hip Hop artist pH-1 is making his Philippine debut on May 3, 2023 at The Filinvest Tent, Alabang.

Karpos Live is bringing pH-1โ€™s About Damn Time Asia tour to Manila following the previously
announced dates in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.

Park Jun-won, more famously known as pH-1, is a South Korean rapper who has made waves
in the Korean hip-hop scene since 2016 with his debut single, โ€œWavyโ€.

His interest in hip-hop and rap was heavily influenced by his childhood growing up in New York,
where he said that all the kids listened to Eminem, 50 Cent and Jay-Z. It was only natural that
this ignited his passion to pursue a career in music that eventually, after consistent uploads to
SoundCloud, caught the attention of Korean global superstar, Jay Parkโ€“founder of H1GHR
MUSIC, an international hip-hop and R&B label.

Since signing to the label, he has released two albums, Halo in 2019 and BUT FOR NOW
LEAVE ME ALONE in 2022. His discography features notable collaborations with Jay Park,
Mokyo, Owen, and more recently, American R&B singer-songwriter, UMI.

If his collaborations are a testament to his songwriting prowess, his live shows speak volumes to
    him being a natural-born performer.

You get to experience the whole spectrum at a pH-1 showโ€”from slow and laid-back beats to
picking up the tempo for his more upbeat and high intensity songs.

His energy doesnโ€™t falter and neither will yours with his ability to command the stage and
engage with the audience. Whether youโ€™re a new listener or a long-time fan, itโ€™s easy to go all in
and have a damn good K-Hip Hop show when itโ€™s pH-1โ€™s. If there’s one you should go to, itโ€™s this

  • New Core Memory with B.I Unlocked with The Hidden Stage in Manila Concert

New Core Memory with B.I Unlocked with The Hidden Stage in Manila Concert

Philippines IDs were in for another treat as B.I made his way back to the Philippines less than a year after his first fan meet!

South Korean rapper Kim Hanbin, more well-known by the stage name B.I, returned to Manila for an entire concert set, not falling short on performance and fan service. Pesented by Three Angles Production, the multi-talented, singer-songwriter, and producer held the B.I 2023 ASIA TOUR โ€“ L.O.L THE HIDDEN STAGE IN MANILA on March 5, 2023, in the PICC Plenary Hall.

SEE ALSO: B.I Gifts Fans with Memories to Remember for a Lifetime in Back-to-Back Fan Meetings

Proving once again his power as a soloist, the K-Pop star pulled in a full house of IDs with new songs in his arsenal and performed never-before-released tracks, some songs even performing for the Philippine crowd for the first time!

Hereโ€™s what we unpacked from the talented artistโ€™s concert with his ever-loyal fans.

    Make Me Go BTBT

Opening strong, B.I pulled an explosive start with his most famous and hard-hitting tracks. He performed โ€œBTBTโ€, originally released as a single with DeVita and Soulja Boy, and was later included as the first track of his recent mini-album, Love or Loved Part 1, โ€œBe Iโ€, a notable track he released when he joined Show Me the Money 3, โ€œOne and Onlyโ€, a solo song released from the album Return by his former group iKON and โ€œWaterfallโ€, from his first full album Waterfall marking his solo career. All the songs significantly highlighted his rapping and dancing skills.

During his ment, he teased the fans that the ENCORE for the latter part of the show is going to be based on the IDs reaction and energy throughout the evening. The fans showed off and started chanting the Philippinesโ€™ famous โ€œwalang uuwi!โ€ tagline. Hanbin immediately understood that it meant the fans didnโ€™t want him to go home, and the teasing continued when he responded, โ€œYou guys have to go homeโ€ฆ but we can choose what time.โ€

You can tell that the rapper loves his fans and is truly concerned for them when he repeatedly reminds everyone that safety is important. He also constantly asks if everyone is okay, to which the IDs always respond with a resounding yes.

Continuing with his set list, he went on and sang โ€œAlive + Flameโ€, and โ€œLoverโ€ all three songs plucked from his second mini album COSMOS and included โ€œIllusionโ€, โ€œGrayโ€ and โ€œRemember Meโ€ from his WATERFALL album. He also included the song โ€œGot It Like Thatโ€ which became a famous TikTok dance trend and โ€œDaydreamโ€ which featured LeeHi on the track, with which the fans sang along with.

    Up Close with Tangerine

Literally getting up close with the fans and throwing out all security measures, B.I hopped off the stage and roamed around the venue to get closer to the fans, something an artist rarely does! While singing Tangerine, Hanbin slowly walked into the pathways and serenaded the crowd. Of course, the IDs are extremely excited about this and we canโ€™t blame them for crowding him as he passes his way through, so Hanbin reminded everyone that he will make his way to the whole venue as long as the fans will let him pass. IDs immediately cleared the way and let everyone get a closer glimpse, a brief interaction, a short eye-to-eye, and all the kilig moments a fan could ask for as he continued to sing โ€œTangerine.โ€ He followed the song with โ€œNERDโ€ originally featuring COLDE as he walked back to the stage.

He then sang โ€œSTAYโ€ which featured Tablo from the album WATERFALL before going backstage for the second part of the set.

James Reid takes over The Hidden Stage

No one was prepared for what came next as B.I briefly took his break from the stage when none other than one of our own, James Reid, came into the show as a special guest! Undoubtedly loved by our own, the crowd went wild as he started his small portion of the evening with โ€œu & iโ€, a song James released with CARELESS.

After the song, the duo greeted each other on stage and shared the story with the fans about how they met in a concert of โ€˜The Roseโ€™ in South Korea. B.I shared that he made James promise to be a special guest at his concert if ever they come to the country, which he did!

During this interaction, they asked for suggestions from the fans about what street food they should both try together and James suggested our famous โ€œbalutโ€ to which Hanbin said they should both try together. Hanbin cutely showed a little jealousy tease, saying the fans screamed louder when James came out. The Philippine IDs assured B.I that heโ€™s the only one for them by cheering for him louder. A super cute interaction indeed!

Hanbin once again gave the floor to James Reid and the blonde, handsome Filipino singer/actor performed โ€œspotlightโ€, a song from the album lovescene:.

A very cute VCR appeared after this that garnered some laughs from the fans towards the end of the video as Hanbin asked in the VCR if the crowd would like to join him โ€œat the graduation party.โ€ We have commonly known that PICC is a graduation ceremony location that even some Philippine IDs went to the venue in their toga! What a fun coincidence!

B.I appeared after wearing a sparkly black jacket and sang โ€œilla illaโ€, โ€œEndless Summerโ€ and โ€œMiddle With Youโ€, all three emitting summer vibes. He continued the concert with more songs, all B-Sides of his albums with โ€œKeep Me Upโ€, โ€œNumbโ€, and โ€œNineteenโ€ (this part teasing the fans. with a see-through shirt), which led to a fan favorite, title track โ€œCosmosโ€. Inspired by the song, the fans started throwing their small confetti in the air whenever Hanbin sings the line, โ€œYou are my cosmos, ๋‚˜์˜ ์šฐ์ฃผ์•ผ (My universe)โ€ before retreating backstage to prepare for the encore because itโ€™s just too short to end the concert just like that!

    EN-CORE Memory with B.I

B.I came out and sang โ€œThenโ€ before talking to the fans again. The artist spoke in Korean for the first time in the night as heโ€™s been well-conversed in English the whole night. He thanked the fans for coming to the concert and thanked the staff, crew, and everyone who made the show possible. He took a picture with the fans after the ment to commemorate the night.

A surprise video appeared on screen and showcased one of the fan projects they prepared for Hanbin. Like their idol, who is also a producer, the IDs prepared, edited, shot, and PRODUCED the song playing in the video. Hanbin was holding his tears back in the middle of the video because of the touching message and the effort they put into him. When he turned around, another fan project was waiting for him as the Philippine IDs put a sticker on their flashlight phones and turned the crowd lights yellow.

After this, a touching performance of โ€œRe-Birthโ€ ensued, a song that signified Hanbinโ€™s rebirth in the industry as a soloist.

    Encoreโ€ฆ For Real

To summon B.I for the encore, the fans needed to muster all they got and scream for him to come out, and as always, the Philippine crowd did not disappoint. Hanbin returned this energy and repeated some songs he already performed earlier in the show, but on a different scale, turning the venue upside down. It was literally a moment to let loose and let go when he sang โ€œFlame.โ€ The place went on fire when he started spitting his verses, so it was only appropriate when he threw water on the crowd along with his dancers.

He once again sang โ€œIllusionโ€ and gave his dancers a spotlight by singing โ€œOne and Onlyโ€ also titled โ€œDotae”.

Making the night more special, B.I performed snippets of tracks for his unreleased album set for release in three to four months time. He made the fans promise that all the songs should not be released on social media, or he wonโ€™t return and Filo IDs kept this promise as no one in any form of social media has released or at least muted the videos uploaded. And you can tell Hanbin canโ€™t get enough of fan interaction when he decided to once again roam around the PICC.

Finally, he performed an encore of โ€œCosmosโ€ making it more special as he amped up for the last song of the night and thanked the fans a hundredth time that night, promising that he will return.
One of the best things at a concert, despite its ending, is something to look forward to, which Hanbin did not fall short of giving. With the unreleased tracks already hinting to be hit, (we can testify to this, theyโ€™re REALLY good), and B.Iโ€™s promise of releasing them very soon, we can expect another concert tour to give us another excuse to use the colorful BINBONG and collect more memories with the shining soloist Hanbin.

The night ended with VIP and Gold ticket holders with a photo op and goodbye session with Hanbin, (we have no idea how he still has energy at this point of the evening), who smiled and posed and greeted the fans warmly despite the interactions lasting only a few seconds. It sure will leave another core memory for the Philippine IDs, whoโ€™s always been two steps behind the multi-talented artist, who never failed to become a huge inspiration.

the vowels they orbit drops sophomore EP, tuloy tuloy tuloy!

The six-track release of the vowels they orbit deals with braving the challenges in life despite brokenness and pain.

Filipino indie pop/rock band the vowels they orbit has finally released their sophomore EP, tuloy tuloy tuloy!, the highly anticipated follow-up to their acclaimed first record, Ang Unang Ikot.

Released under Sony Music Entertainment, the new EP shows lyrical and music growth without losing the well-rounded charm that made them an instant favorite when they first came out.

Thematically speaking, tuloy tuloy tuloy! speaks about never letting heartbreak get the best of you, and braving the world with newfound determination even when life gets more challenging than usual. The EP also deals with the concept of taking charge of your own story to make it a better one, and embracing the brokenness inside with the wishful thinking that youโ€™ll heal and improve someday.

โ€œIt is about finding ourselves caught in the cycle of our own emotions, yet still choosing to move forward,โ€ the Selos act shares in a collective statement. โ€œBecause this EP is a continuation of the first, the phase of emotions is a bit heavier โ€” from coping with the unfamiliar feeling of life without your first love in โ€˜Unaโ€™ to dealing with grief and the loss of a loved one in โ€˜Clutch.โ€™ However, it does end on a high note with โ€˜If You Come Back To Me,โ€™ talking about being sure of oneself and not relying on another to live and grow. In the next phase, we are looking forward to more healed feelings.โ€

the vowels they orbitโ€™s new EP, tuloy tuloy tuloy! is produced by Rye Sarmiento, guitarist of 6cyclemind and Banda Ni Kleggy, and was recorded in his studio, Backdoor Recording Studio, during a 6-day lock-in session in 2021. Inspired by iconic alt-pop acts The Cardigans and Moonpools & Caterpillars, Sarmiento wanted to capture the โ€˜90s sound in terms of arrangement and vibe, but made it a point to retain the bandโ€™s indie pop influences with a more organic, rock-oriented direction. โ€œWe also gave attention to the performances of each member, doing what they do best individually while still keeping their chemistry as one band.โ€

The majority of the songs from tuloy tuloy tuloy! were written and sung by lead vocalist/guitarist Nikka Melchor. Keyboardist Hannah dela Cruz wrote and performed โ€œClutch,โ€ and Jeremyโ€™s father, Ponciano Sayas, penned โ€œHere In My Arms,โ€ in which drummer Jeremy is a featured vocalist. The end result is a project that feels singular, yet distinctly unique in their surprising ways.

Aside from โ€œUna,โ€ โ€œBangungot,โ€ โ€œClutch,โ€ โ€œHere In My Arms,โ€ and โ€œIf You Come Back To Me,โ€ the EP also features the focus track โ€œSandali,โ€ which talks about the importance of slowing down and finding the light amidst everything. According to the five-piece act, the song was written by Nikka during the start of the pandemic, thus the lyrics. However, she realized that the message can still be applied to life, in general. โ€œWith so much going on, we tend to wonder when it will end.โ€

The EP release will be accompanied by a launch on March 11, 2023 (Saturday) at the 70s Bistro in Quezon City, featuring performances by the vowels they orbit, I Belong To The Zoo, Autotelic, syd hartha, Better Days, Hey June!, and Banda Ni Kleggy.

the vowels they orbitโ€™s โ€˜tuloy tuloy tuloy!‘ is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.
