PLUUS, SBTown’s Newest Boy Group, Will Hold Their Debut Showcase

PLUUS is the newest boy group of Mr. Geong Seong Han, popularly known as Tatang Robin, the producer of the biggest boy group in the Philippines, together with Ms. Adie Hong, the South Korean trainer of SBTalent Camp. The six-member boy group is being managed by his now established company, SBTown, and is being co-managed by Ms. Kathleen Dy-Go, under the record label, Universal Records. The partnership of Universal Records and SBTown promises a successful management for the six-member boy group. With the team up of UR Managing Director Ms. Kathleen Dy-Go and Mr. Geong Seong Han, PLUUSโ€™ debut and future plans are positive and certain.

The name of the group came from the combination of the words โ€œPLUSโ€ and โ€œUSโ€ which means that PLUUS (pronounced as โ€œplusโ€) and their fandom are together in this journey from the start and will continue to stick together for a long time and that the boys will be here to ADD good things in their life.

PLUUS is set to officially debut in their showcase, PLUUS +ime is Now. The event will happen this coming March 31st, 3 PM, at Power Mac Center Spotlight, Circuit Makati.

PLUUS will exhibit everything they have trained for as they prepared a triple set of surprises for this event. Everything from their dance skills, vocals, and rap skills โ€” plus charm, they will showcase the power of six boys who are fully prepared to take a bigger stage. This 3-in-1 showcase comes with the addition of exploring the details of their debut album: PLUUS +.Y.M.

Exciting fact: PLUUS played an important part in the process of producing the debut album. They collectively wrote the songs and choreographed the dance for this debut. The music video will also be exclusively released first in the said event ahead of its official release on their YouTube channel. Plus, a bonus performance of a full English R&B song that aims to reach and conquer the global stage. These are all prepared by PLUUS for fans to see and enjoy because as excited as the fans are, all PLUUS members also canโ€™t wait to meet them.

Before debuting, PLUUS went through four years of extensive training and hardships. Admittedly, the boys said that the path to reaching this much was not easy. But with each other by their sides and the solid friendship they have made, their dream seems a lot more reachable for them. And these dreams are just not for themselves; it is also for the people who are with them along the way, and the people who are supporting them.

The boys are excited to be able to perform for fans in this debut showcase, PLUUS +ime is Now. A lot more performances, contents, and activities including their nationwide concert together with their sister group YGIG, are lined up for the group on this much awaited debut. And they plan to continue doing all these on bigger stages and audiences, officially as PLUUS.

  • Worth the Wait: WayVโ€™s Phantom Fan Meeting Completes Manila Stop

Worth the Wait: WayVโ€™s Phantom Fan Meeting Completes Manila Stop

    Promised kept. WayV came back.

Five months ago, WayV first stepped foot at The Big Dome for the I Pop U festival. It was quite an emotional event for the Weishennie fandom as a few days prior, SM Entertainment announced Ten and Winwinโ€™s withdrawal from participation due to health reasons. The four members who flew in apologized for being unable to perform and shared heartfelt promises of returning at a better time.

And on March 26, WayV finally made good on that promise, bringing the 2023 WayV Fanmeeting Tour [Phantom] to Manila. Excited Weishennies lined up early at the gates of Araneta Coliseum donning white, red, and, black themed outfits, some even wearing masks inspired by the fan meeting’s theme – Phantom. The night took off with back-to-back bangers “Kick Back” and “Try My Luck”, followed by the group introduction.

Hendery was the star of the sole game segment, opening his personal luggage for โ€œWhatโ€™s In My Bag.โ€ Each item in his carrier bore a backstory, and he was quick to spin tales with items embedded to inject Filipino elements, like an abaniko and a Good Morning towel.

The game was designed to show a relatable side to Hendery, but as he unpacked, we learned about everyone else too. He brings nail clippers gifted to him by Yangyangโ€™s mother, who Yangyang then proudly shared was also in attendance. Printed photos had them reminiscing about their time in the country last year, like dining on a boat and boarding a Vikings ride. They recalled fans screaming at them on the ride and checked if the same fans were in the audience. First-timer Ten mentioned a liking for polvoron and an interest in visiting Palawan, while Kun unintentionally spoiled possible Manila content by pointing out that they headed to Intramuros earlier in the day.

The group performed nine of their originals, including their latest single “Phantom”, and uber-sexy hits “Love Talk” and “Nectar”. A short cover medley included aespaโ€™s “Illusion”, NCT Dreamโ€™s “Candy“, and SHINeeโ€™s “Sherlock”. They made full use of the outfit-change breaks to share a glimpse of songs that didnโ€™t make the setlist. Kun and Xiaojun sang single verses of “Back To You”, “Sleepless”, and “After Midnight”. Meanwhile, Ten, Yangyang, and Hendery performed a snippet of fan-favorite “Low Low”, with the crowd supplying most of the lines.

The setlist was no surprise as there was little to no deviation from previous stops, but the joy of witnessing these songs live was euphoric.

A fan meeting is only as interesting as the artistsโ€™ personalities, and it’s only fun for the audience if the artists themselves are having fun onstage. The WayV fan meeting became memorable not only because of the boys’ talent but also their banter. The strength of their bond was reflected in how smoothly the show ran with the members carrying it entirely as their own guests, hosts, and hype men.

WayV delivered a great time with just nine songs and a modest production. It would be interesting to see what a full-scale production would unleash. Perhaps thatโ€™s what fans can look forward to.

  • Astro’s MoonBin and Sanha Make Manila Happy With Their Unique Scent

Astro’s MoonBin and Sanha Make Manila Happy With Their Unique Scent

Astroโ€™s Moon Bin and Sanhaโ€™s exciting, unique scent lingered in Manila after their Diffusion in Manila fan con.

MoonBin and Sanha debuted on the Manila stage as a subunit last March 25, 2023. The last time they were in Manila was with the full group in 2016. For Diffusion in Manila, a lot of activities were in store for Arohas to enjoy: from fellow Arohas giving out freebies to multiple fan projects to make the day an extra special one.

After all, MoonBin and Sanha were the next to visit Manilaโ€™s shores after Cha Eun Woo had his fan meeting last October 2019 and August 2022.

    Diffusion in Manila Fan Projects

There were a lot of fan projects that were executed: MoonBin and Sanha were presented with flower bouquets and cakes in their waiting room. Their waiting room also had wall decorations as well as post-its of Arohas messages to them and cute photo booth props.

For Arohas, the New Frontier Theater lobby was decorated with life-size standees, tarpaulin banners, a balloon arch with an Instagram frame, and the MoonBin and Sanha logo. And before the fan con date, another fan project was a ticket giveaway.

Some attendees were able to enter the venue for sound check, which was a fan benefit for some of the ticket tiers. Once they were seated inside, anticipation and excitement could be felt.

Diffusion in Manila: Sound Check Fan Benefit

MoonBin and Sanha came on stage for sound check: Sanha in black and Moon Bin in a soft blue outfit. The theater erupted in screams.

They were so surprised and happy at how excited and warm the fans were. The energy was high with fans chanting and singing loud to “Chup Chup”, “Dream Catcher”, and “All I Wanna Do”.

Other fan benefits included a meet and greet, a group photo opportunity, a special Manila unit photocard, and an individual photocard as well as a signed album. Some benefits were won by raffle.

Astroโ€™s Subunit MoonBin and Sanhaโ€™s Manila Debut

Finally, at 6 p.m., it was time for Moon Bin and Sanha to take the stage. As the lights turned off and the opening VCR began, the theater filled with screams and turned into a purple galaxy with Arohas waving their phones and robongs in the air.

The stage turned red and was filled with smoke and then two silhouettes appeared. The screaming only got louder. MoonBin and Sanha opened their Manila fan con with โ€œWHOโ€, โ€œBad Ideaโ€ and โ€œDIAโ€.

After officially introducing themselves, they even greeted the crowd with โ€œMabuhay!โ€

MoonBin and Sanhaโ€™s solo stages for Diffusion in Manila

After the second VCR was shown, the stage focused on Sanha as he performed solo with a mashup of “Distance” and “Wish”.

He sat on the stage with a spotlight on him and his guitar. As he sang, a collage of the six Astro members filled on screen. It was both a beautiful and a very emotional time for Arohas.

After Sanhaโ€™s heartwarming performance, it was MoonBinโ€™s turn for his solo performance of “Perfumer” and “Desire”. It was a roller coaster of emotions: from Sanhaโ€™s heart-tugging serenade to MoonBinโ€™s sultry performance.

The Diffusion in Manila Aroha Talk Segment

Since it was a fan con, there was also a segment for games and activities which they called Aroha talk.

MoonBin and Sanha saying Filipino phrases

Sam Oh hosted this fun segment and even asked Moon Bin and Sanha to say Filipino phrases such as:

    • Ang init – Itโ€™s hot
    • Charot – Just kidding
    • Mahal ko kayo – I love you

    Music quiz

The first activity was for them to identify songs as these songs played all at the same time. If they werenโ€™t able to identify all the songs, there would be a penalty, which was to dance. They could even enlist the help of Arohas in the audience to help them identify songs, which they did. Another game they played was a drawing quiz.

They danced to New Jeanโ€™s “OMG”, BSSโ€™s “Fighting”, Hoang Thuy Linhโ€™s “See Tinh”, and BLACKPINKโ€™s “Pink Venom”.

With the sense of smell being the highlight of their 3rd mini album and first fan con, the venue was also diffused with a fragrant aroma as they performed โ€œMadnessโ€, their latest title track from their Incense album.

Another VCR showed on the screen as the boys changed outfits signaling that it was time for more performances. The boys came out in cute outfits and performed โ€œChup Chupโ€, โ€œAloneโ€, and โ€œDream Catcherโ€.

But the show wasnโ€™t over yet as the best part was yet to come: the encore. They played an instrumental version of โ€œBooโ€ as lyrics flashed on-screen encouraging fans to sing along while waiting for the encore.

    Diffusion in Manila Encore

The encore began with โ€œAll I Wanna Doโ€ and the boys took fans by surprise as they went down to the aisles to serenade them.

Once they were back on stage, they proceeded to talk but then it was Arohasโ€™ turn to surprise them with the fan video. MoonBin and Sanha looked so touched and happy as they watched the video.

But the surprise wasnโ€™t over as an instrumental version of “Dream Catcher” filled the theater and Arohas united to serenade MoonBin and Sanha.

Before the final song of the night, MoonBin instructed Arohas to sing different octaves of the intro of โ€œYour Dayโ€. They even gave out signed plastic balls to Arohas. Fan interactions like these give extra special memories for fans to look back on.

The upbeat and energetic song, โ€œYour Dayโ€ was a great closing encore song to which they kept singing a few more times with Sanha even saying, โ€œDonโ€™t forget we will always be together!โ€ before launching into one more chorus of the song with confetti blasting to the audience area.

Ending on that high note, MoonBin, and Sanhaโ€™s unique performance scent would linger on, sparking joyful memories for Arohas to look back on.

  • Cedric Escobar Makes Long-Awaited Debut Single, โ€œโ€˜Di Na Baโ€

Cedric Escobar Makes Long-Awaited Debut Single, โ€œโ€˜Di Na Baโ€

    Single Available Now

Cedric Escobar may be a new name to the OPM scene, but heโ€™s one of the best rising artists to watch out for this year. At 23, heโ€™s reaching for his dreams as he signed a recording deal with PolyEast Records and finally releases his first-ever single, a heartbreaking ballad titled โ€˜Di Na Ba.’

Cedric launched his debut single โ€œโ€˜Di Na Baโ€ during the first โ€œThe LiVeRARY Night.โ€ The LiVeRARY is a series of online performances on YouTube created during the pandemic in 2021 eventually bringing the PolyEast Records artists to us live on stage. Co-presented by FUGA, the world’s leading B2B music distribution, marketing services and technology company, the event was held Tuesday, March 21, at 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub in Pasig City. Cedric performed his single along with some covers for the lively audience and a few people from the media.

Inspired by Cedricโ€™s anecdote of his love life, โ€œโ€˜Di Na Ba” is composed by his mentor and Introvoysโ€™ drummer, Paco Arespacochaga. The song is about asking a girl if thereโ€™s still a chance to reunite and continue their story, even if sheโ€™s already with someone new.

A musician at heart, the up-and-coming pop balladeer has been singing since he was a kid. Growing up in New York, he experienced joining a gospel choir and even entering competitions in other cities. Passionate for his craft, Cedric wanted to pursue music school. However, his parents were against it and he ended up studying for a medical course at Queens College, New York.

Equipped with experience in performing live, he first sang for KZ Tandingan in 2019 for her U.S. World Tour. Soon after, he also served as an opening act for artists such as Jaya, Juan Karlos, and even the Introvoys. That is where he met his mentor, Paco Arespacochaga.

Living in the Philippines since 2016, Cedric has been trying to establish his music career. But even though heโ€™s exposed to and heavily influenced by genres such as gospel, soul, and R&B, he wants to bring back the 90โ€™s OPM sound. Luckily, he already has a loyal following that has been supporting him throughout the process.

He shares, โ€œMasarap magkaroon ng fanbase na Filipino kasi iba tumangkilik ang mga Filipino sa mga artists.โ€

He says that heโ€™s been dreaming about it since childhood and it was part of his vision board. He has already stumbled upon opportunities but says, โ€œWhen it does come, it doesnโ€™t always come back. So when something like this happens, I must take the leap and give it my 100%.โ€ Cedric admits it took a long time, but itโ€™s finally happening as an album with his label PolyEast Records is set to be released this 2023 with songs all written in Tagalog.

โ€œโ€˜Di Na Baโ€ by Cedric Escobar is now on all digital music streaming platforms. You can also watch the official performance video on PolyEast Recordsโ€™ YouTube channel.

BLACKPINK staged the BLACKPINK WORLD TOUR [BORN PINK] MANILA (BULACAN) on March 25 and 26 at the Philippine Arena, four years after making their concert debut in the Philippines. JISOO, JENNIE, ROSร‰, and LISA triumphantly returned to the Philippine concert stage, greeted by a sea of pink lights and the relentless cheers of BLINKs who filled the arena during the girl group’s historic sold-out back-to-back shows.

It came as no surprise that the event etched a fresh chapter in the legacy of K-Pop in the Philippines. The anticipation for the event has been palpable from the tour’s announcement since it will be the first time in four years that the phenomenal girl group graces the local concert sceneโ€”in a larger venue with a bigger stage and a more extensive discography.

The girls kicked off the show with “How You Like That” and “Pretty Savage” from their million-selling debut studio album, The Album, and “Whistle” from their debut single album, Square One.

The members then took a moment to officially welcome BLINKs to the Philippine stop of their current world tour and individually said their hellos. They also expressed astonishment to the crowd that welcomed them to their return to the Philippine concert stage. “I did not know they have the seats up so high. It looks like it’s the stars up there,” JENNIE remarked.

A gorgeous illumination lit the arena and surrounded the girls like stars as they continued the concert with “Don’t Know What to Do” and “Lovesick Girls.” No signs of dwindling enthusiasm could be seen in the arena. With such fervor, the cheers grew louder and louder. The concert was absolutely worth the wait because BLACKPINK performed a gratifying opening set for their BLINKs.

BLACKPINK made a triumphant stage comeback, performing “Kill This Love,” “Crazy Over You,” “Playing With Fire,” “Tally,” and “Pink Venom” with fiery performances while donning a new set of outfits for the concert.

As BLACKPINK gets ready for their solo performances, YGX, a hip-hop dance crew under YG Entertainment, grabbed the stage and wowed the crowd with their incredible routines. In addition, BLACKPINK performed with the support of a live band made up of Yung, Chuckie G, Omar, and Bennie. This added another layer of richness to the already spectacular stages that BLACKPINK has created.

The subsequent solo performances by JISOO, JENNIE, ROSร‰, and LISA showed each performer’s distinct style and skills. JISOO, who will release her debut solo single album, Me, on March 31, enthralled the crowd with a cover of Camila Cabello’s “Liar.” JENNIE took the stage next with an unreleased track, “You & I (Moonlight),” paired with an entrancing partnered dance routine. ROSร‰ leaned into her rocker side as she began her solo set with “Hard to Love,” before mellowing it down with an emotional staging of “On the Ground.” LISA closed the solo stages with hard-hitting performances of “Money” and “Lalisa.”

BLACKPINK gave mesmerizing performances, never losing their enthusiasm and commanding the entire audience with their charm and stage presence. The audience was just as animated, mirroring the excitement and expectation of the performers with resounding applause and sing-alongs after each performance. Even ROSร‰ was visibly shocked by the volume of the concertgoers from the Philippines, saying that they were the loudest crowd they had ever heard.

While the girls performed “Shut Down,” “Typa Girl,” “DDU-DU DDU-DU,” and “Forever Young,” the Philippine Arena continued to quiver with unimaginable fervor.

A VCR was followed by encore performances of “Yes Yeah Yeah,” “Stay,” and “As If It’s Your Last” where JISOO, JENNIE, ROSร‰, and LISA moved closer to the audience, circled the stage, and engaged in active fan interaction. The girls were happy as they enjoyed themselves and shared those special moments with BLINKs.

Upon the song’s conclusion, ROSร‰ thanked everyone involved in the making of BLACKPINK WORLD TOUR [BORN PINK] MANILA (BULACAN). “And of course, thank you to our Philippine fans! Salamat po! We love you,” she added.

JENNIE added, “You guys were truly amazing tonight!” The girls then greeted and bowed to their Philippine BLINKs for the last time, expressing their thank yous to the amazing crowd of the evening. “This has been BLACKPINK! Kamsahamnida, salamat po,” they said as they waved goodbye and blew kisses to the fans.

JISOO, JENNIE, ROSร‰, and LISA were reunited with their Filipino BLINKs on the BLACKPINK WORLD TOUR [BORN PINK] MANILA (BULACAN) four years after their first performance in the Philippines. The excitement to see them on the local concert stage was palpable, with a sold-out crowd welcoming them back to the country for two nights of an unbelievable experience alongside an endless display of enthusiasm from their fans. Indeed, BLACKPINK’s dominance as one of the most successful and phenomenal K-Pop artists to ever make their debut was demonstrated by the back-to-back concerts, which were supported by nearly 100,000 Filipino fans who flocked to the largest indoor arena in the worldโ€” writing a new chapter in history.

  • Ebe Dancel on Music, Friendship, Beginnings, and His Career

Ebe Dancel on Music, Friendship, Beginnings, and His Career

ISA PA! Ebe Dancel, the former lead vocalist of one of the most well-known Pinoy bands, Sugarfree is set to repeat his concert SA WAKAS The Repeat: 20th Anniversary Celebration due to popular demand! With special guests Sandwich, Red Ollero, and Manila String Machine, the OPM legend is set to hold the concert on March 31, 2023, in 123 Block from 6 p.m. onwards.

In preparation for the concert, the veteran musician sits with the media to talk about his upcoming concert and all other intimate thoughts about music, friendships, humble beginnings, and staying in the music industry for over two decades.

Hereโ€™s what we unfolded with the legendary singer-songwriter:

Question: What made you decide to stage a repeat of the SA WAKAS concert?

Ebe Dancel: Two reasons: mas maraming di nakapanood (the first time) compared sa nanood. Days later, I was getting messages and letters from fans, asking for a Day 2. I spoke to Mitch (Singson, former drummer of Sugarfre) and as he was walking me to my car (after the first SA WAKAS) I said, โ€œI donโ€™t think I can do this again, pagod na ko, tanda na ko.โ€ Pero dahil dun sa clamor, I decided to it again. And then number 2, weโ€™re not announcing it but weโ€™re raising a fund for a friend who has cancer and who needs help.

Q: Is there going to be a difference in part 2 of the SA WAKAS concert, compared to the first one?

E: The lineup is different. Binawasan na namin, so we can play longer sets. Ewan ko kung paano nabitin sa 17 songs so dadagdagan pa namin ng 5 song so itโ€™s going to be 22. Thereโ€™s going to be more space this time because if Iโ€™m not mistaken, ‘yung last time naubos ‘yung tickets within 24 hours, and now it will be bigger. We have to rehearse first of course, so when I get back letโ€™s see what happens.

Q: What can you say about the success of the first concert of SA WAKAS last January, and for the SA WAKAS: THE REPEAT, what are some of your expectations?

E: Personally, wala akong expectations. I just want people to have a good time kasi sila yung humingi nito, so baka sila (the fans) yung may expectations. Ineenjoy ko lang bawat saglit na kaya ko pang tumugtog, kasi you never know kung hanggang kailan ko pwedeng gawin to.

Q: Who are the guest performers for the SA WAKAS: THE REPEAT?

E: Personal request ko ang Sandwich saka si Red (Ollero), so there’s gonna be comedy, there’s gonna music and there’s gonna be me, which is gonna be comedy and music. Yung Manila String Machine, late addition sila (but) I’m very grateful sa kanila because they volunteered. Nagkita kami in a wedding sa Rizal because we’re both performers. I guess they missed and I missed them too so magrerehearse ako with the quartet.

Q: Your personal guest performers are Sandwich and Red Ollero and now Manila String Machine. What are the things you liked about them the most and why you decided to invite them?

E: Sandwich will always be one of my favorite bands. When Sugarfree was just starting out, Sandwich yung palaging nagsasabing tumugtog kami with them. So malaking karangalan na pumayag sila at may orange sila. Si Red, nakakatawa kasi siya eh (laughs). Kailangan natin lahat tumawa, it’s important! And he’s a fantastic guy, I met him the first time yesterday and he’s great! Thereโ€™s a variety.. (of artists), you have Sandwich who will bring the house down. And then you have Red, who will bring the house down in his own way, and then you have me. And then the Manila String Machine pa na when I had my concertโ€ฆ I think ako yung huling nag-concert bago mag-lockdown nung 2020, I had a show in the Metro10 with the Manila String Machine. So medyo scared down lang sila ngayon when it comes to collaboration and you still get strings and parang for some reasons at tsaka yung mga strings (of their songs) palaging bagay so Iโ€™m looking forward to that part as well.

Q: How do you feel about your work inspiring generations and how they have become an โ€œanthemโ€ or โ€œsoundtrackโ€ that people are still asking for to this day?

E: Very honored because all my songs naman are born out of honesty, I never had a target market in mind, so anything goes, thereโ€™s no science to what I do. Which is why I think the fans appreciate the songs. And then, whatโ€™s good about it is like noong first concert may dumating na nanay, tapos sinabi niya sakin, โ€œPinapanood kita noong high-school (pa ako). Pinakilala niya yung anak niya who is now in high school so aside from the fact that she made me feel old, I think itโ€™s just wonderful that musicโ€“not just mineโ€“ transcends generations.

Q: Are there any new acts or new artists that you are looking forward to collaborating with, if not now, in the future?

E: Not new artist, but at some point I think I promised Maโ€™am Regine Velasquez-Alcasid a song. At some point I promised Miss Sarah Geronimo a song. So I donโ€™t know when I will finally have time for that so nasa bucket list ko โ€˜yon. Parang doon ako nagtetrend kaysa sa mga bagets.

Q: You released an EP last year HABANGBUHAY and it was a success. Will we expect new music from you soon and will we see a sneak peek in the SA WAKAS part 2?

E: No, Sa Wakas ay parang balik tanaw so weโ€™re going to play mostly Sugarfree songs, di ako papayag na we will not play the new songs but the show will mostly focus on the old songs. When it comes to new music, naisip ko na โ€˜yan kahapon eh. I think this year I need to start writing songs again and itโ€™s not gonna be an EP, itโ€™s gonna be a full album. Like maybe 10, 12 songs, like what we used to do back in the day. Ngayon kasi single-based na ang consumption ng music but I believe that there are still people who appreciate just the flow, the story of an entire album being told. Thatโ€™s my goal. Sana okay yung mga kanta.

Q: Did you ever get writerโ€™s block? If ever you did, how did you overcome them?

E: I personally donโ€™t believe in writerโ€™s block, I think we tend to be distracted to be what goes around us. Especially these days, everything goes around us. Sometimes I think the problem is itโ€™s not that you donโ€™t have a voice, people drown you out and they talk over you. So pag nilagay mo yung sarili mo sa isolation, which Iโ€™m very good at, I think I can sit down and sort through all the joys and pains of what is happening. And my manager, who is also my producer, Rico Blanco, we have conversations about songwriting. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you try writing about this and that,โ€ he said, and itโ€™s great that Iโ€™m surrounded by people who want to see me succeed, even after all these years.

Q: Since you are celebrating 20 years in the industry, if you have a message to yourself 20 years ago, what will it be?

E: Be patient and be kind. I was neither when I was starting out but there are things that you learn along the way and Iโ€™m fortunate to have mentors like Ryan Cayabyab and Gary V who reminded me that talent alone will not sustain you. You need to have dedication, hard work, and most of all you need to be kind to people.

Q: What are your thoughts about being grateful for your years in the industry?

E: Next year, I will be celebrating my 25th year in the industry. I officially started my career 1999. Hindi madaling tumagal ng lima or sampung taon sa industriyang ito, bukod sa talent, kailangan may hard work, kailangan may dedication and kailangan grateful ka kasi skill set ito na binigay ng Diyos saโ€™yo. So I think Iโ€™m merely an instrument tapos siya yung nagsusulat ng kanta. Not my hands, not my feet, not my voice but Godโ€™s. Alam naman yan ng mga ka-trabaho ko. Di man ako relihiyoso pero I talk to God many many times a day.

Q: In the first run of the SA WAKAS concert, 123 Block was decked out of campus fair decorations. Why do you think people associate SA WAKAS with high school or college life?

E: Well maybe itโ€™s because they were in high school or college when it came out and then we broke the album by doing school fairs, lahat na yata ng university natugtugan na namin so thatโ€™s how people found out about us. Tapos yun yung distinct memory nila about that album so binalik lang namin yung vibe na yon, complete with perya.

Q: Have you noticed any difference like now and then?

E: Same lang naman in the sense that they pay attention to the lyrics. Mas content over form ako eh. Iโ€™m not the best guitar player I know, Iโ€™m not the most technically skilled, so yung content and words, thatโ€™s the most Iโ€™m focused on. The old fans would buy the albums and listen from track 1 to track 10. Ngayon kasi sa dami ng nangyayari and everything so very accesible, the new fans can just skip tracks. So yun yung difference din, sa consumption but the love is the same.

Q: You mentioned that this concert is going to help your friend who has cancer. What motivated you to start a concert with respect to your friend?

I donโ€™t want him to die. Gusto ko lang siyang tulungan in whatever capacity because this person has been so good to me. Noong tumakas ako papuntang La Union, he was there. Kahit nag-bibike lang kami, upo lang kami sa dagat, kain lang kami ng kung ano ano, but I feel itโ€™s my responsibility to give back. This person, kilala yan ng buong industriya kasi pag merong bagong lumalabas na kanta, siya yung pumupunta sa shows, siya yung nag-sheshare ng mga kanta so I guess this is just my way of helping him. I want him to be safe but his fight has just begun. Gusto kong maramdaman niya na kasama ako every step of the way.

Q: If you have a message to this friend of yours, what would that be?

E: I love you and weโ€™re gonna fight this together. Mas matindi yung laban mo pero lagi ko naman pinapa-alala sayo na di ka namin papabayaan.

Q: Since we are celebrating the anniversary of the SA WAKAS album, whatโ€™s your favorite song from that album and why?

E: Meron akong bias na song na that was never chosen as a single, itโ€™s called Insomnia. Itโ€™s not the most melodic, itโ€™s not pop, itโ€™s really loud. Noong sinulat ko yun, kiti-kiti ako, ngayon parin naman, so yun siguro, insomnia.

Q: What is your take on PPOP groups today and do you believe that they are noticed more than the veteran artists?

E: PPOP which is modeled after KPOP, worldwide phenomenon kasi yan eh. I think itโ€™s a matter of taste, maliit lang kasi yung mundo eh. Magsuportahan tayo, ganun nalang siguro.

Q: How does it feel to bring back your performances once again on stage?

E: Iโ€™m very excited to perform with Mitch again. We have been very good friends, especially after we both left the band. Nag-eenjoy lang kami.

Q: Can we talk about the sense of community in the music scene? Whenever someone needs help, youโ€™re all there for each other. Was it easy to find that sense of belonging in the industry?

E: Yung sense of belongingness, parang medyo matagal bago ko nahanap yung pwesto ko sa mundo but when it comes to commaradirie, hindi alam ng fans na magkakabarkada talaga kami. Iโ€™m very good friends with Itchyworms and Parokya ni Edgar, may Viber group ako na nandoon sila Ryan Cayabyab. So we talk all the time and whatโ€™s great about musicians is that when you get to know them as people, theyโ€™re even more fantastic, so that partโ€™s easy. So if someone needs help, everyone will pitch in because they will do the same to you.

Q: With the sense of belongingness that you mentioned, why is that (not easy)?

E: When we released the first album, it was the era of acoustics, sa left side yon. Tapos sa kanan, it was also the time of great heavy bands. Sila yung hari, so hindi alam ng label kung san kami ilalagay. So sabi namin, ilagay niyo po kami sa gitna. Kami na pong bahala. I think it worked.

Q: Do you still remember the very first time you heard your songs on the radio, does it still light for you when you revisit that moment?

Two radio stations played us. One was RX 93.1, si Fran pa yung nagpatugtog ng kanta namin. But para sa akin yung naaalala ko talaga is si Francis Brew of NU 107 had the show called In the Raw. Parang a week before, he mentioned he was going to feature Sugarfree, tapos ang sama ko kasi lumabas ako sa misa just to hear what he thought about the songs. Pakiramdam ko naman napatawad na ko ni God for that.

Q: Any plans after the SA WAKAS: The Repeat? Will there be a Threepeat? Do you have plans for Holy Week?

E: Threepeat? No na. Tuldukan na siguro natin dito. Plan for Holy Week, balak ko mag-bike ng mahabang-mahaba. I will try to 100km or more during the Holy Week. But new music, I think itโ€™s on the table and I think we need to start planning for my 25th Anniversary and a lot of uncertain and okay lang ako sa uncertainty of it all.

Q: As an artist or creative, what are the challenges of doing a repeat show?

E: That people have seen it already. So the challenge is to bring in something new and I listen to fans when they say, โ€œBitin naman.โ€ So sige, magdagdag pa tayo ng 5 songs or more. So thatโ€™s the primary challenge, I guess. But this is also an opportunity for those who couldnโ€™t go the first time around and for those who sent me letters.

Q: What do you think is the contribution to the growth and popularization of OPM?

E: I think I will let the fans decide kung ano man yung naging contribution namin. Pero as far as I know, our main goal is to write our songs and play them in public. So I think history will judge me based on the songs I wrote but is it my place to say kung ano yung contributions ko.

Q: Why Red Ollero and how do you think will the show proceed given then heโ€™s a comedy act and why a comedy act in the first place?

E: Kausap ko lang siya kahapon eh and I told him my one frustation in life is I really wanted to be a stand up comic at some point in my life pero masyado kasi akong seryoso eh for my own good. Tapos pag nag-jojoke ako, hindi nila alam kung kailan ako seryoso or nagpapatawa. Red has his own magic. I think heโ€™s a fantastic person. What I do during morning is I go to his page and I laugh then I feel like we donโ€™t have to take life too seriously. Chill lang. Enjoy life.

Q: How will this show be different besides the lined-up performers?

E: Other people are joining me on stage aside from Mitch. Weโ€™re going to make the venue a little bigger to accommodate more people. Iโ€™m hoping the lights are better and not that it was bad the last time but weโ€™re gonna work on the technical aspect of the show. Weโ€™re gonna include visuals because we have an LED screen this time. Usually in concerts like this, one month ahead, dapat plantsado na lahat, pero nilalaro-laro pa kasi namin yung pwedeng gawin sa concert. While itโ€™s a concert, we want to treat it as something very intimate na kahit madami or konti yung manonood, parang yun naman yata yung strength ng music na ginawa ko, itโ€™s gotta be intimate however big or small the venue is but weโ€™re gonna tweak things a bit and see where it goes.

    Final message:

Ebe Dancel: Iโ€™d like to thank you all in advance for helping us promote this show. Kailangang-kailangan ko yung tulong ng media kasi on my own, di naman ako maalam sa social media, so malaking tulong na nandyan kasi. Those who missed out, tickets can go very slowly or very fast so I hope you get yours soon. And very blessed po ako na nandito ako sa harap niyo, sa harap ng fans. That is never lost to me. I hope to see you all at the concert!

  • The Itchyworms dedicate new song โ€œPanic In My Mindโ€ to Chino Singson

The Itchyworms dedicate new song โ€œPanic In My Mindโ€ to Chino Singson

The upbeat, โ€˜60s-inspired track can also be interpreted in many ways, according to lead vocalist and drummer Jazz Nicolas

The Itchyworms are back with an upbeat, retro-pop tune that deals with the dread of knowing that your loved one will be moving away to a different place for good.

Their new single โ€œPanic In My Mindโ€ was specifically written for their bandmate Chino Singson, who moved to Canada with his family to start a new life.

But according to Jazz Nicolas (lead vocals, drums, piano, keyboards, and keytar), who wrote the song based on a real-life event, the meaning behind โ€œPanic In My Mindโ€ can be taken in multiple ways. โ€œThe second half of the song shifts the narrative to a bitter person whose ex-partner is now with someone else, and is having a jealous existential crisis because of that.โ€

The Itchyworms’ signature sound lives on in “Panic in My Mind,” which blends intricate vocal harmonies and colorful melodies with โ€˜60s-style pop. A perfect accompaniment for its lyrics, which talk about pining over someone in a world where they are the anomaly, the arrangement turns up the excitement a few more notches with its nuanced musicality. Itโ€™s done with effortless grace and less theatrics.

โ€œWe were going for a more organic sound with acoustic instruments as opposed to our previous album, Waiting For The End To Start, which had a lot of electronic elements,โ€ Nicolas explains. โ€œIt also has a โ€˜60s vibe due to the jangly guitars and three-part harmonies.โ€

โ€œPanic In My Mindโ€ is produced by Jazz Nicolas and Mikey Amistoso. The latter is a long-time friend and collaborator, who is now officially part of the band.

โ€œHe co-produced the song with us, played various instruments, and sang harmonies,โ€ Nicolas adds.

The Itchyworms are set to embark on their first US tour, dubbed โ€œAkin Ka Na Lang, Amerika.โ€

The multi-city concert kicks off on March 24 in New York City, New York, and will wrap up on April 7 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here are the official dates and venues:

    • March 24 – New York (D’Haven)
    • March 25 – Fort Worth (Ridglea Theater)
    • March 26 – San Antonio (The Grand Event Center)
    • March 29 – Houston (Gerry’s Grill)
    • March 31 – San Francisco (Bal Theater)
    • April 1 – Los Angeles (The Noypitz DTLA)
    • April 2 – San Diego (Lola Happy Bistro)
    • April 5 – Chicago (Michella Terrace)
    • April 7 – Las Vegas (Diversion Amusements)
