  • Shane Filan Charms Manila Yet Again

Shane Filan Charms Manila Yet Again

On September 15, Shane Filan returned to Manila for a solo concert at the KIA Theater. The 39-year old Irish singer, who is known as the lead singer of the immensely successful boyband Westlife, is no stranger to the Philippines.

After the band announced their split on 2012, Shane has then pursued a solo career. Since 2013, he had also visited Manila several times to promote his albums, holding mall shows and meet and greet sessions. By himself, he effortlessly drew crowds consisting of old and new fans alike.

Filipino balladeer Jed Madela opened the evening with an impressive performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings”/”Hero” and “Di Matitinag”. Upon entering the venue, he jested, “Akala niyo si Shane na ‘no? Pero bakit mataba,?” (‘You thought it was Shane’s turn, but why is he fat?) which the crowd accepted in good humor. Joke aside, his stage presence was amazing and his vocal prowess even more so.

Shane Filan’s concert at the KIA Theater was such a treat. Having seen a few of his mall shows for the past 5 years, his major solo show that evening was the one I looked forward to the most, and it definitely was the most memorable one yet.

Shane entered the stage in a simple yet classy black suit. The stage set-up was simple, having only a led screen at the back, but his charisma as he performed live was fascinating. He started his set with “Everything to Me”, “Unbreakable”, “This I Promise You” and “Heaven” which were tracks from his solo albums.

One fond memory of the evening happened at the middle of the concert, when Shane asked the crowd for a favor. As it turned out, that night happened to be the birthday of his 10-year-old son, Patrick. “I’m missing his birthday at home, but I couldn’t think of a better place to be than in Manila tonight,” he said. He then asked everyone to sing a birthday song Patrick while he took a video of it to send to him. Amusingly, he was very particular about the song ending with “dear Patrick” in contrast with the typical Filipino version of just ending it with “happy birthday to you”. “You forgot his name! That’s not gonna go down well in Ireland,” he joked. The crowd went on to sing the whole song twice to get it right.

It doesn’t end there. One lucky fan got a chance to come up the stage to get signed poster and more. Anna, who was holding up a banner saying “I’ve been waiting 16 years to get a hug from you”, actually made her dream a reality. She attended the concert with her husband who also got to do the same, plus they got a selfie with Shane. “I guess I just bring people together, don’t I?,” he teased.

The second half of the concert focused on the more nostalgic side as he started performing songs that were originally by Westlife including “My Love” and “If I Let You Go”. Manila also got another special moment as Shane Filan called on Jed Madela to perform “Flying Without Wings”.

“You’re such a good crowd. It’s incredible. The place is packed! Everbody is smiling at me! I don’t think I’ve seen so many happy people. It makes me very happy. It makes me smile, too,” Shane said to the crowd with a beaming smile on his face.

The most amazing thing about Shane Filan is his voice and the way he sings with such vitality and character. Next to that is the fact that he simply enjoys singing live, and you can see it in the way he holds himself onstage. In contrast to the sold-out arena shows that Westlife had before, the KIA Theater is rather compact. With the lights fully open, he scanned the crowd and took the time to look at people’s faces. The effort he makes to connect with his fans is astounding.

Shane is also very appreciative of Manila. “Every time I’m here, I feel like I’m welcome all the time. It’s like a second home.” Having been to Manila a lot as a member of Westlife and as a solo artist, it seems that he has grown fond of our country.

He also performed “You Raise Me Up” (which he claimed to be his favorite Westlife song). For the (unexpected) finale, he sang the upbeat “World of Our Own”.

Three weeks ago, I would have ended this article with something along the lines of “The nostalgia was overwhelming, it was really nice to hear the good, old songs from my childhood”. Well, those words are still true. After the show, I found myself reeling over Westlife’s old albums and the nostalgia damn near made me drown. However, much to my (and the world’s) surprise, Westlife announced on October 3 that they are indeed getting back together for new music and a new tour. I guess that’s one more thing we can all look forward to from here on out.

  • Taeyeon’s five songs which most of us can definitely relate to.

Taeyeon’s five songs which most of us can definitely relate to.

Taeyeon is known as the leader of SNSD/Girl’s Generation and their lead vocalist of the group. She is known for her wide range of vocals and catchy songs which most of us can definitely relate to.

Here are some of Taeyeon’s songs that we’re looking forward to hear on her first solo concert here in MNL.

    1. Fine

This song was released last February 2017 and was included on her first studio album “My Voice”. This song is solely about how someone feels during break up. The songs focuses on Taeyeon’s vocal and that goosebumps feel when she launches herself for the chorus. You will definitely get the I-know-how-that-feels vibes.

    하루 한 달 일 년 그 쯤이면
    웃으며 추억 할 거라 했지만
    나는 아니야
    쉽지 않을 것 같아

( When one day, one month, one year passes
You said you’d probably smile and reminisce but not me, it won’t be easy for me.)

    2. I

This is her debut song as a solo artist. “I” was released last October 2015. Reading through the translated lyrics, the song is about someone who faces struggles in life, but instead of focusing on the unfavorable circumstances, she decided to see the beauty of life .

    빛을 쏟는 Sky
    그 아래 선 I
    꿈꾸듯이 Fly
    My Life is a Beauty

    (Sky that pours light
    (I) stand under it
    Fly as if I’m dreaming
    My life is a beauty)

    3. Rain

This was digitally release by SM Ent. for SMTown Station. This song really compliments Taeyeon’s voice. The song is pertaining to “Tears” that is being shed because of a painful breakup. This is about the agony and the tearful recollection.

비가 오면 내리는 기억에 번지는 아픔에
    흠뻑 쏟아지는 너를 보다
    선명했던 그 시간에 멈춘 채
    추억에 젖은 채
아름다웠던 너를 그려 in the rain

(Memories come down when it rains, spreading pain
Watching you as you get soaked
    Clear in that moment,
    wet with memories
I think of you when you were beautiful in the rain)

    4. 11:11

This song was released digitally on November 2016. The lyrics is about a girl’s reminiscences about making wishes with her former lover when the clock struck 11:11. 11:11 is a multidimensional bridge between 2 reality systems, the old reality of duality and the new reality of oneness.

    모든 게 자릴 찾아서 떠나가고
    넌 내 모든 걸 갖고서 떠나도
내 맘은 시계 속의 두 바늘처럼
    같은 곳을 두고 맴돌기만 해

(Everything finds its place and leaves
You took all of me and left
But like the two hands of the clock in my heart
I keep lingering in the same place)

    5. Why

This song was digitally released on June 2016. The lyrics of the song seems to saying goodbye to a long time love, her comfort zone and to finally move on. The Why music video was thought of to be an Epilogue of her song, Starlight (featuring Dean).

    쫓아가기도 벅차 숨이 찬
    세상이 전부는 아냐
    하루 종일 걸어도 똑같은
    풍경은 절대 보이지 않아
    하얀 종이에 적어 본 Why
    잉크처럼 번지는 맘
I’m falling, I’m falling, I’m falling to you

    (The world isn’t all about
    trying to catch up
Even if I walk all day the same
    landscape will never been seen
I wrote on white paper, why,
    my heart smears like ink
I’m falling, I’m falling, I’m falling to you)

Taeyeon’s songs are mostly about break up, heartbreaks and moving on. Don’t miss the chance to see her perform these songs live on 12/14 at New Frontier Theatre and be ready to be mesmerize by her voice.

  • The Intensified “Crank Up Manila” in a Nutshell.

The Intensified “Crank Up Manila” in a Nutshell.

Lee Jong Suk, one of the most renowned South Korean actors of today, and dubbed by his Filipino fans as “Higop King”, visited Manila last November 18. Crank Up in Manila is the last leg for LJS’s tour. The K-drama prince was greeted by his Filipino fans at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with roaring cheers and piercing shrieks.

As early as 2:00pm, fans of various age and genders, lined up outside the Coliseum waiting for the gates to open. The fan meeting has been anticipated by Filipino fans for quite a long time.

The fan meeting was hosted by Giselle Sanchez who is an avid fan of Lee Jong Suk. Giselle was vocal about how good looking the actor was and fans couldn’t agree more, as the Big Dome was filled with the deafening screams when she confessed “You are so handsome,” which brought a smile to Lee Jong Suk’s face. Aside from his handsome features and charming and bubbly personality, Lee Jong Suk made sure to connect with his fans through the event.

Filipino fans are crazy in love with the Korean actor Lee Jong Suk, so here is the transcript of the Question and Answer segment where you can get to know more about him.

GS: What kind of son are you?

LJS: I tried my best to be a friend like my mom but I really don’t know”. (Whoa friendly indeed!)

GS: Is your mom similar to you or the opposite?

LKS: Because she is my mom, I guess we are alike.

GS: Aside from your mom who among your family has similar personality like you? example your looks?

LJS: My younger brother actually kind of looks like me but now he gained a bit of weight so I think if he loses weight and goes to a diet we will look alike again.

GS: Will he join showbiz business also?

LJS: No, he will not join the showbiz business but he co-owns the cafe.

(FYI: Korean actor and model Kim Woo Bin, close friend of Lee Jong Suk who was diagnosed of nasopharyngeal cancer last year, was seen hanging out with LJS at the cafe most of the time! )

GS: How do you manage stress? Or how do you de-stress?

LJS: I usually release my stress by eating good stuff, delicious food but now since I’m entering a new drama I really can’t release my stress that way, but I think meeting my fans like this is how I can release my stress.

GS: What are you anticipating here in the Philippines?

LJS: I feel really thankful and surprised when you are shouting my name at the airport already. I felt bad that I wasn’t able to greet you there, so I’m happy we were able to see each other today.

GS: For you, how meaningful is your 2018?

LJS: So 2018, I turned 30 in the Korean age system, and so I think because of that I tried to become more mature and I have a lot of thoughts. I also met my fans through fan meetings, and also I am thinking of what to do on my next project, and because next year we might have a break from each other.

GS: How do you spend your last day of the year? For example this December 31, do you have special plans?

LJS: I usually spend my last days of the year doing shooting! Probably I’ll be shooting again this year, but I hope to spend it more special so on the last month left I would think hard of what to do.

But this question definitely got the fans swooning more over the actor.

GS: Your fans love you so much, are there any memories from your fans that you find special?

    LJS: RIGHT NOW!

The question and answer went on asking the actor about the most memorable role he portrayed, to which he responded Jung Jae Chan for While You Were Sleeping.

The three best kiss scenes were also played into the screen which set up the romantic atmosphere in the Coliseum. First best kiss scene was from Pinocchio with Park Shin Hye ( the scene where Choi Dal Po back hugged Choi In Ha), 2nd best kiss scene is from While You Were Sleeping with Bae Suzy and the last but the best one (I must say!) is from the scene in W with Han Hyo Joo ( the part where Kang Chul visited Oh Yeon Joo in prison).

GS: What was the most difficult scene to shoot?

LJS: There was a time when I had to jump into the bridge, so I think that time I was scared and nervous about that.

There was also a segment called OX Talk for “O” Yes and “X” for No.

    Be ready for this!

    Forbidden Love – O

    I am a jealous person – O

Man and Woman can become friends – O

I am consistent the Ideal type – O

I am very active and enthusiastic when falling in love – O

    GS: Why a jealous person?

LJS: I don’t know, but I have a lot of jealousy in me.

GS: Can you please give an example of active and enthusiastic when falling in love?

LJS: When I want something, I have to have it.

(Wow! says the fans and LJS! and then all the fans were screaming and went wild )

    *Example of Ideal type

LJS: I want someone who is wise!

Aside from the interview portion, LJS showcased his talent when he played the piano with the song “My Soul” and “Will You Know/Do You Know”. He countlessly apologized to his fans as he kept on committing mistakes hitting the wrong note on the keyboard. “Today, I really want to do my best” said Lee Jong Suk. The fans made sure to commend the actor by saying “괜찮아요’ (It’s Okay). He also cheerfully joined a game with his fans who were given a chance to see him up-close and to hug him onstage.

“I know that this is the last stop but I am so glad that I was able to do it here in Manila. Thanks for the memories that I can bring home with me. Thank you and I love you guys. I hope you guys go back home safely. You guys are my pride and today’s memories. I will never forget you. Thank you”.

The actor then concluded “Crank Up in Manila” with the songs “Come to Me and Only Then” which is part of the original sound track of While You Were Sleeping. The two hours quickly passed by and sadly, our oppa’s fanmeeting has come to an end, but surely Filipino fans will continue to support you on your future projects.
