You should have heard the collective squeal-scream (Screal? Definitely not ‘squeam’ though) of fans during last May’s Wanderland Music and Arts Festival when Karpos Multimedia announced Bombay Bicycle Club’s performance for July. It was the same screal–with more applause this time–that reverberated throughout the World Trade Center
when the award-winning English indie rock band gave their Filipino fans enough reason to venture to the venue through a monsoon evening. Almost needless to say, it was the fans’ energy that made frontman Jack Steadman gush out: “I haven’t been to a country where were greeted with such love.” That’s how we are here, gentlemen.

We’re close to the day of reckoning again as one of the highly anticipated pop-punk festival blasts off once again. Or should we say, “days” of reckoning? On its third year, Bazooka Rocks Festival is back with a louder and more vibrant lineup. To add to the thrill, it is extended for another whole day. This time, Pulp Live World tops their previous festivals by adding a more diverse set of acts including pop-punk, post hardcore/emo, an indie pop and even a metalcore band. On August 30 and 31 at the SMX Convention Center, get ready for a blast of music, fun and overall happiness as Bazooka Rocks Festival 3 is guaranteed to rock your socks off. Expect a curiously amusing set of attractions and games, with freebies and surprises attached to them.
The band lineup is divided into a specific grouping. For the first day, the more “veteran” post-hardcore bands are set to play (those that have been together since the early 2000s or even earlier). On the 2nd day, the “contemporary” pop-punk bands are set to thrill.
Read on for a short introduction of the foreign acts for the two days.
DAY 1: August 30, 2014
The 1st day is dominated by post-hardcore bands who were in the limelight in early to late 2000s. In the headlines are The Used and Taking Back Sunday who are known to be great friends with each other. They’ve toured and headlined shows together across America and certain parts of the world. Both bands have also performed in Manila on separate occasions in 2012.
The Used is a rock band formed in 2001, composed of Bert McCracken, Quin Allman, Jeph Howard and Dan Whitesides. They are known for songs like “Blue and Yellow”, “Taste of Ink”, “All That I’ve Got”, “I Caught Fire (In Your Eyes)” and more recently “Cry”. The band has just released their 6th studio album this April titled “Imaginary Enemy”.

Taking Back Sunday released their first album titled “Tell All Your Friends” in 2002, which turned out to be one of their most memorable albums until now. Their lineup has changed over the years since then, but the original TAYF lineup including Adam Lazzara, John Nolan, Eddie Reyes, Shaun Cooper and Mark O’Connell. Some of their trademark tracks include “Cute Without the E”, “You’re So Last Summer”, “A Decade Under the Influence”, “MakeDamnSure” and “Flicker, Fade”. They’ve released a total of 6 studio album, their most recent one titled “Happiness Is”.

Saves the Day was formed twenty years ago when the band members were still in high school. The pop-punk/emo band has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years with Chris Conley as the only mainstay member. They’ve released 8 studio albums to date.

It was an evening of music and worship down at the Smart Araneta Coliseum as the world-renowned Christian band, Hillsong United, took over the stage for their “Welcome Zion Tour”. Their show ran for 2 nights on June 11 and 13 and for each one, the Big Dome was completely booked as thousands filled the seats from the general admission to the patron area.
The show also attracted diverse sets of people of all ages. A good number was composed of groups of teenagers, college students and even professionals. There were also those who came as families, as couples and as friends. Different people from different churches came together to celebrate one thing: God.
The backdrop of the stage was a glowing mountain inspired by the biblical figure “Zion” which also happens to be the title of the band’s latest album. The concert, which started at around 8:00pm, lasted for almost 2 hours and a half. That, alone, is quite a treat, considering that very few major concerts last that long.
Hillsong United is composed of “worship leaders” Joel Houston, Jad Gillies, JD, Matt Crocker and Taya Smith – a lively and talented bunch of people who are all compelling speakers and proficient musicians. In between songs, they would speak about how their faith healed them and how they encourage everyone to follow the same path. The crowd was very receptive to their words, cheering and raising their hands in acceptance.
