From Yale University To YouTube Sensations

Known for their YouTube covers, originals and medleys, Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider have come a long way since 2009, even releasing their own original album, Make It Up last year.

Edgy? No they’re not, but how to describe the presence of the YouTube singing sensations Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider around Manila Press? For me since I was dumbfounded, I can recount it as humble and overwhelming. These YouTube artists have been friends since middle school and both graduated from Yale University, though they are music genius, Sam graduated with a major in Classical Greek and Kurt with major in Mathematics.

GMA artist Rita DeGuzman opened the presscon for the duo who will also be there on June 25 and 26 as their opening act. Sam and Kurt became popular in 2009 when their performance of a Michael Jackson medley went viral on YouTube, with more than 30 million viewers, the cover opened an opportunity to reach The Ellen De Generes Show and Oprah Winfrey Show and a lot more.

The Q&A went smooth and fun as they answered it like they personally know everyone at the Lounge. Here are the few distinctive lines we could remember:

“I just want people to know – we’re really very normal people who just happen to make music that people get to enjoy.” –Sam Tsui

“If you’ve got haters that means you are doing something well. -Sam Tsui

“making your own destiny – that’s very important to me.” –Sam Tsui

Most challenging song they’ve ever covered: Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You.” –Sam Tsui

Math and chess will always be part of me, but I love music. –Kurt Hugo Schneider

When I asked if they want to follow Christina Grimmie and other Youtube stars who joined The Voice, Sam replied ” I’m not considering The Voice as my platform”. They also want to try balut and halo-halo during their stay.

The YouTube partners are here to prove that they are not limited to doing covers. In fact they are here to debut Sam’s original album “Make it Up”. They also rendered original composition “Don’t Want An Ending”. Catch Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider on June 25 and 26, 2014 at the SMX Convention Center, 8:00 pm. This is made possible by StarMedia Entertainment, MGM Global Entertainment Productions, and Goldmine Entertainment Productions. Special thanks to the Official Residence, Solaire Resort and Casino.
