Who are The xx?

The xx. The band name alone inspires intrigue – a question mark in some, a daring exclamation point in others (and the combination of both for the multitude). Lately, the name has been passing along a number of ears and minds, particularly now, with the announcement of their first ever Asia Tour which had fortunately included Manila on the 30th of July.

Who exactly are The xx?

Composed of one girl and two guys, the 20-something trio from London has been creating a lot of noise in a global platform, which is one hell of a paradox really, since their music is everything hushed, subtle and for the most part, minimalist. ‘Indie pop’ would be a way to call it, but their music is so distinctive that it would be negligent to classify it solely as such.

Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith have created a kind of music so hauntingly definitive that triggers an almost instant recognition from anyone who hears it. It’s in Romy’s hushed, but yearning vocals. It’s in Oliver’s enigmatically deep voice and the puncturing stare to match it. It’s in Jamie’s slowly flowing beats and programming. It’s in the trio’s ingrained closeness that unites and uplifts their image into a band of mysteriously shy, morose artists dressed in black. It’s in their characteristically simple but poignant portrayal of human intimacy and its downturns in the form of a harmonic dialogue in their songs. All of these are thrown organically together to create “The xx”.

They have released two studio albums, to date. Upon the release of their eponymous debut album in 2009, they had managed to captivate people’s attention, garnering positive reviews all over the world. The album eventually won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2010 (an award given to the best album in UK and Ireland), beating out 11 of the most prominent British acts in the process. “Crystalised”, “VCR”, “Basic Space” and “Islands” were a few of the tracks included there.

Their sophomore album titled “Coexist”, released in September 2012, proved to be another revelation as it featured a deeper side of the band. This time, the lyrics captivated a clearer tinge of reality and the melancholy that comes with it, sung in the most wistful whispers and melodies. “Angels”, “Chained” and “Fiction” all came from the album

The xx had stage sold out performances across the world. In a few weeks, Manila will get to experience the wonder and mystique that is uniquely contained in their music. Find out for yourself how their music can linger and crawl under your skin. Don’t let the chance slip. See them on the 30th of July at the NBC Tent.
